Writings on the walls, strange noises, and cold spots are some of the phenomena that occur in this old mental institution. September Update: Upon entering this old institution there are strange feelings of presences watching you. Throughout the entire building(3 floors and a basement)there is writings on the walls, lots of graffiti, recently was burned on the first and second floors, but not severe. Reporting of telephones ringing, furniture being moved, footsteps heard in the hallways, and cold and hot spots throughout, just an odd an eerie feeling, there is no need for any high tech equipment here you can feel everything you need to know. Patrolled on Halloween and sometimes during the week, could be caught for trespassing.

ive been to bryce three times, once with 11 people. we went to the school that is by the mental institution as well. i saw a orb with my own eyes. we tought it was a flashlight but they were up in the front. my cousins said that the saw it was a face. also before entering we heard a whistle from the field. The second time we had 4 people. we took pictures and also they were orbs. there could be some dust and moisture particles, but there are some we KNOW were orbs. they were mostly outside and in the school but not in bryce. the were green and white. then when we went to the school we heard a wistling again the same one! from the field. 2 ways that i know getting up there. 1. a Church by walmart. we walked that way it was 4 am and we heard a phone ring! it was too loud to be in the building who knows i guess the building that we walked by is hallow, ull see when you walk past. we heard stuff in the bushes. 2nd way is by the church and by another building, its by houses. and the way i guess is the entance of where u would drive in. it was long way and times our flash light went out and flickered

just to inform those who think that the building by the old hospital is a school, that is incorrect. it too is a hospital. i had a friend who used to work in the newer hospital before it closed. some friends and i went there the other night and some jerks scared us and were throwing things at us (think of your actions before you hurt someone); but in the event of it all and ofcourse some fear we were chased by a black figure that caught up with us in a nonhuman way. it seemed to glade and we felt as if it was going to enveloped us. later on we were able to talk to the guys acting foolish and we questioned them about chase us, they said they did not. it is yours and my chose to believe them. two of my friends are very spirtual ppl. one of them can sense auras. young ppl who go there and destroy this property need to step back and realize what they are doing to our alabama history and also need to think about the fact that there are spirits that if pervocted can do harm(physcial). just be respectful of those who rest or preside there. you would want the same!!

To the Anonymous User that posted on 7/17/08,

For some reason, most of the maps are off. It's probably because an exact address is not provided. Your best bets are to enter in all the search criteria on mapquest or another search engine of your choice your self. Good luck on your search. :-)

The general area of old bryce is by the airport. Go over the lurleen wallace bridge into northport and get off at 5th street. Go through downtown northport past kentuck park. Take a right at R Cardinal Airport Rd. Go down and then take a left onto 64th st. after this take your second right and mapquest calls this also by cardinal airportt rd. then it will be on your left down a long driveway. it is the across the street from a small black church. you can not see the actual building from the street. I hope this helps you get there. I have been once with some friends and I did not see any signs of ghosts or hear anything. To me it was an old abandoned building that i worried would fall down. it looks like a place where gangs or satanists would hangout. have fun!

THIS OLD HOSPITAL HAS ALWAYS GAVE ME A WEIRD FEELING I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. I'VE BEEN THERE ONE TIME, IT WAS AT NIGHT, AND SOMETHING WAS THERE I KNOW THERE WAS EVERYONE ELSE THAT WENT RAN WHEN WE STARTED HEARING THE ODD NOISES OF PEOPLE TALKING AND SCREAMING, I THINK THAT I MUST HAVE BEEN THE ONLY ONE THAT NIGHT NOT SCARED OF THE DEAD. IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE THAT NIGHT BUT I KN0W THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT I HEARD AND I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE.

I have been to the old hospital about 15 times.I have a good amount of film from the old building. After all the time I've spent there the newest building has to be way more active.I never noticed anything to weird in the old building. In the newest building me and two friends watched as a yellow mop bucket rolled down the hall without anyone pushing it. Also I have recorded the sound of glass breaking in the same hall as me and there is nothing to be making the sounds. THANKS B.G

Please remember that many of the patients here were raped, tortured, etc. with no one to beleive them. Suicides were high as they were often murders. With this many violent activities while alive naturally they would be restless in death. The entire place should be torn down----much worse than a prison-- people were prisoners of the flesh as well as of the mind.

btw... totally agree that it should be torn down! Not only is it a horrible place, it is a blemish on the history of Alabama. I'm usually all about historical preservation, but this is one place that needs to go.

The commmonly known "Old Bryce" is actually called the "Gemison Buidling". It was a hospital of some kind many years ago and is associated with Bryce on the UA campus- primarily because they are both owned by the state. There were questions of inhumane practices at the Gemison Building and it was shut down and stands today with heavy watch by local police. At one point the Bryce Hospital on UA campus was the alrgest Federal facility in the nation and was in trouble because the ratio of doctors to patients. That could be a reason "Old Bryce" was used.

i personally know just about every room in sd allen "the school" and the jemison building "old bryce" the small building to the left of old bryce is a guard shack if you keep walkin down that same road and look to you right the is a building in the woods that has a lot of put put golf stuff in and on old chairs there is a old furnace behind old bryce not realy anything scary in the butt i am one of the few who has seen the basement witch is flooded to the ceiling now but if you wait for a drought you might get lucky like i did and just need some rubber boots the basement is the scariest place i have ever been in my life the is a surgical bed still down there witch i have heard had many different uses the reason the roof is gone is cause some high school kids set it on fire for there senior prank but if you dare to go take 82 to 82 lumber and there will be a little church park there and you will see a dirt road behind a gate if you have a 4 wheel drive you can drive up to it but follow that dirt road till you see but people will mess with you if they see you out there but they dont mean any harm just givin you the scare your out there lookin for

We just returned home from the "Old Bryce" hospital. It was the first time I had ever been. We drove in the back way (first left past 84 lumber, between the gate and the tree). It drives by the back of the building, the first thing I saw were 2 smoke stacks so I knew we were at the right place. Driving in the back way was very creepy! There are several out buildings that have alot of growth around them, but follow the road and it turns back to the front of the building. We did not go in - to scary at night for me!

Me and about 16 of my friends went to old bryce last night and I didn't get scared at all. I didn't see anything abnormal. I personally think the reason everyone says bryce is haunted is because it is old, abandoned and an old mental institution. We went downstairs and on all the upstair floors, and then on the fire escape. Also to the old school or nursing home. And nothing frightened me.just saying. I would love to see some footage of creepy stuff going on if anyone has any.. Also for anyone who likes "haunted" places, there is a place called maxwells crossing that is supposed to be haunted by confederate soldiers. It is in tuscaloosa.:)

try and go there with just a couple friends instead of 16. I went there with 2 other friends, i left the front door open in case we wanted to run out without having to stop and open the door, when we walked out we found it had been closed. with just a couple others, its a lot more quiet and a lot more creepy. we were hearing wierd noises the whole time too. OH, and go with only a small maglight and no other flashlight. we forgot a normal size light, dark and creepy.

My mom works at Med-Center North, well one night her friends went down to the old Bryce Hospital. They took pictures of each room on the inside. They claimed to have captured "orbs" in each of them. Most people at first would think its dust or something. However one room had no "orbs" at all.I have not seen the pictures yet but i'm trying to get my mom to get them for me so I can analyze them.So if you do investigate Old Bryce Hospital, make sure to take pictures to see if you caught anything!

The best way to go is to park at 84 Lumber and walk down the road. The building in the back was not and never was a crematory. It was a coal, then later gas fired steam plant that heated the buildings. The large brick openings were coal trays NOT body trays. This is apparent if you take a closer look. One of the coolest parts of the Jemison building is the cafeteria on the rear side. Go to the lower floor and all the way back. The Jemison Building was originally developed as a home for mentally disturbed elderly patients who were at risk of suicide or other abnormal behavior. It was overseen and operated under the Bryce Hospital budget but was never called Bryce. I did extensive research at the Alabama State Archives and found some pretty fascinating things out. As per my research, there is a cemetary located on the north end of the property that contains about 100-120 graves. I've looked for this but only found overgrown "depressions" where graves might have been.

I figured that the 'crematorium' was a heating system of some kind due to the double boilers in the back of the building and the steam generators in the front. To the person that posted above this post, can you share some of the research you found at the Alabama State Archives? I went to 'Old Bryce' by myself twice over the past week during the daytime and went through all of the buildings. It is a shame that the sites have been vandalized to the point that they are...especially all of the broken windows, mirrors and ceramic. The only place I did not venture down into was the basement. I had a small maglight flashlight which really didn't light up very much. I didn't need a flashlight for most of the floors/buildings. I did notice tons of wasps everywhere and also birds inside the buildings. I touched nothing and the only thing I took with me when I left were photos and memories. Maybe some of the other visitors should do the same...

I am looking for the name of a man that escaped from Bryce in either the 30's or 40's and took knives from the kitchen and killed 3 children in Anniston, AL. He was an older man with a white beard. Anybody got any idea?

I have to go see this place again... I work in mental health and have heard stories of Bryce Hospital all my life.  Many of them are unfortunately not legend but truth. I know several people who were raped and assaulted, one gentleman who lost an eye in a fight, and another who was stabbed.  I also know someone (former coworker), who worked at Bryce (Old Bryce, that is, the newer building, but the one that is no longer in use, confusing!).  He was there before the famous Lurleen Wallace visit that turned everything around, and can tell some terrifying stories. More than anything, this building fills me with an overwhelming sense of sadness, thinking of the suffering that happened there.

HALLOWEEN 1983, WE HAD A PARTY OUT THERE ON THE LAWN, WITH POLICE DEPT APPROVAL. NO ONE COULD EVER EXPLAIN THE DIM LIGHTS THAT KEPT GOIN FROM ROOM TO ROOM, WE ASSUMED IT WAS SOMEONE IN THE BUILDING PRANKING US, THE POLICE BLOCKED THE PLACE OFF THE DAY BEFOE THE PARTY, SO IT SEEMS THAT NOONE COULD HAVE GOTTEN IN, BUT TO THIS DAY, NOONE HAS CONFESSED TO IT. DON;T KNOW IF IT WAS REAL O A PRANK

I went into Old Bryce at least 4 times. Once was the 30th of Oct. We went the back way, and when I say we I mean about 8 to 11 people. We had a infared camera with us. Well we were at the padded cells and I was pushed into one of them,we laughed and kept going up to the attic, we scared some kids who were driving up and that was hillarious, but what isn't funny is the next day after classes we all met up and watched the video..when i was pushed into the padded cells there is this blood curtaling scream that lasted for a min. EVP BIG TIME. still gives me the chills.

Worked in this building for many years as a doctor. It was never a part of Bryce but was a part of Partlow State School housing mentally retarded individuals.Nobody was ever raped or murdered there.S D Allen ICF which is on the grounds was part of Bryce.I suggest you avoid each as you will be trespassing should you attempt entrance.

My Grandmother Ida Gray Hodges was taken to Bryce Hospital in approximately early 1900s perhaps 1915. She died around 1917. She was supposed to have died in child birth. Since her husband was a poor man, he buried her in pauper's grave on the grounds. I am concerned that Bryce will be sold and that the University of Alabama who want to purchase this land will build over her grave or disturb it.

I learned tonight on the Internet that in 1970 The City of Tuscaloosa bulldosed some of the graves in the Bryce Cemetery. The Web site stated that bones and fragments of caskets were moved. I am concerned that my Grandmother, Ida Gray Hodges, was dug up. This is a continuation of the message above.

Hello to all,

I am a medium. I have had this abilityever since I was 3 years old. I can see the non-living sometimes but mainly I scence evil. My brother and some of his friends wanted me to visit Bryce with them 20 years ago, Please folks understand that I am very serious when I say that there is alot of bad things, terrible things occured there in the past around 1895-1950's. There is an evil in the basement that was so strong it made my nose and ears bleed. Please don't be curious enough to go back. If you have been and nothing happened count yourself lucky. I wasn't so lucky and niether were the poor souls trapped in that place by the ones who murdered them! Please stay away from that place!

Hello to all.

I have been to Bryce a few times, and like many others have posted, I find it to be a very sad place. The knowledge of the evils that took place there, and what people have done to the building is horrible and saddening. I've had a few experiences, that I won't go into too much detail about here, but I do warn everyone to please be on the look-out for homeless people and others who are protective of their 'home' and could possibly cause you harm. I would/won't go without some sort of protection. Mace, etc. However, the second time I went I had a brick thrown at me from the third-story window.. wether that was a person or 'something' else is unknown, but I do know no one in my group did it. It wasn't pleasent, to say the least.

My question now, however, is does anyone know if it is safe to go within the next week or so? Or is it still heavily patrolled by police after halloween? A couple of my friends have yet to go and we wee considering making the trip.

I went up there for 4 or 5 hours about a week ago it was in the middle of the day just to look around we were walking around and would ask if somthing was there to make a bang or knock on a wall to let us know if anything was there at one point we heard a very loud knock right next to us we asked it to do it again and about 10 sec later it did keep in mind we were in there 5 hours and didnt here anything like that the whole time .could b nothing. it was me and my cousin and he started down one wing and i down another about 5 or 10 min after i thought my cousin was walking back towards me i heard walking not hard cause theres dirt and stuff everywhere in there but the walking was right next to me right around the corner i stopped listened and still for about 5 sec you could hear it then i call out to my cousin to see where hes at and i couldnt even here him yell back at first because he was a good way away and i would recomend if you wana go stay a while at night to go a little early i.e when its still light out to look around and make sure theres no homeless hiding any where inside also alot of beer cans and stuff layin around looks like kids party there.Couple personal experiences AMAZING place though.

Me and some friends went up to the old bryce a few nights ago and when we got up there the strong smell of propaine was in the air and the sound of somthing boiling or cooking we continued on untl strange noises drove us away we came to two conclusions either the ghost in the place didn't want us there and made enough noise to scare us out, or some one was making crystal meth and didn't want us to find it so they made enough noise to scare us out either way we ran back to the car

When I was a student at UA, I had a friend who was writing a psych paper on Jemison house. The hospital to the left was still open at that time, approx 2000 or 2001. She spoke with the security there and one of the older gaurds that worked @ Jemison before it was closed gave us a tour during the day on a Friday the 13th. He explained the full history of the building from the construction to the closing. It was very interesting. He told us the hospital was originally used for black patients and then used for children after segragation. The hosptial was built in part as a stimulus in local economy that resulted in a lot of over building. There is once place where a hole is drilled thru the floor and you can see the thickness, TPD thought of using as a jail and were testing the structure. I went 6 or 7 at night, and I really think the day trip was the neatest.

Most people who have commented on this article are VERY confused. This is referred to as "OLD BRYCE" because it is a building associated with the actual BRYCE on UA's campus. It was used to house the African American patients (male and female on different floors). Yes, horrible things happened there and many people were killed. Haunted? Probably. The Old Boiler House is located behind the building and was used to heat the facility. It was NOT used to cremate people. The trays you see there were used for coal.

I had a family member who died in the old Bryce hospital and honestly, defiling it is so disrespectful and stupid. Leave it alone and let the dead rest in peace.
