Location Description:

This English Tudor mansion was purchased as a wedding gift for Laura Shedd and Charles Schweppe, the mansion has 20 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms.

When Laura Schweppe died in 1937 at the age of 58 she had a fortune of over $10 million dollars of which only $200k was left to her husband the rest went to her children. With Charles disappointment in this and him being 60 years old, he started to have trouble sleeping and his mental health started to deteriorate. In 1941 his servants found him dead in bed with a gun shot to the head, a note with "I`ve been awake all night. It`s terrible" was found on the dresser.

The mansion was then unoccupied for 46 years after his death. During this time there were rumors that the ghost of the family`s servant haunted the mansion`s hallways and kitchen area, while the ghosts of the owners haunt the bedrooms. It was said that one of the windows of the master bedroom never needed to be cleaned, while all the others collected dust over the years. After the 46 years of being abandoned the mansion was then purchased by a couple for over $5 million.

My family owns this house - they have for over 20 years It is haunted and cursed. All that have lived there have had terrible tragedies and terrible lives. I was lucky to escape This house has destroyed the life of the woman that lives here - it has possessed her soul. This house should be on a documentary. I refuse to ever ever go there

A bunch of my friends live really close to Mayflower Road, and I'm sure I've driven down it many times. I've lived on the West side of Lake Forest for over 20 years and this is the first I've ever heard of this. Kinda makes you wonder why nobody talks about it, doesn't it? Next time I go home for break I'll try to dig up some information/find it/photograph it (if it doesn't have a long driveway, that area is heavily wooded).

When I was once a teenager many moons ago, eager to explore and willing to risk a little trouble, I and some close friends learned about this mansion and visited it clandestinely many times. I know it well. Today the estate property is subdivided and now contains several new houses, but when we went exploring, it was only the mansion and the coach house which was occupied by a grounds keeper. The Schweppe family kept up the grounds, just not the house. I have just discovered this house on the Internet. I never thought to look until now. Stories of an always-clean window and hauntings aside, the descriptions I have read are all accurate. One aspect of the house, which is missing from all accounts I have read so far is the swimming pool and the grass tennis courts. You can see these right next to each other clearly on Google Earth. The swimming pool looks as though it belongs to a knew house on the grounds, as it is right next to it. Perhaps it does today, but if you look closely from GE you can easily tell that the pool is at the end of a long mall extending on the top of the bluff. The pool is spectacular, and let me tell you nobody could have ever hopped a cooler pool. First of all it is just plain big. You can see this from GE. But in addition, it is Great-Gatsby stately. It has a marble staircase flowing into it that is easily seen from GE if you are looking for it. Two bath houses, and most intriguing of all, a "natural" diving platform. This diving platform can only be experienced. Instead of a high dive- it was high dive high-- there was a forested hill. From the pool level on the north side, there was a path into the woods that wound its way up through the woods which contained an artificial creek fountain that wound down into the pool. At the top of the path was a diving platform-- no board. These woods can be seen from GE. They are what separate the pool from the giant new house next to it. Knowing what I know about this layout of the pool, it is easy for me to believe that it is not associated at all with this new house; these woods and hill provide a natural barrier to that property. My guess would be it is still part of the original mansion and its grounds. The pool was maintained perfectly! When you are a teenager, this was simply as awesome as it gets. It was teenage pool hopper's dream :) As for the house itself, I am going to keep my memories close. Before this house was restored, suffice to say, a movie set would have a hard time competing.

I had a close buddy of mine i new in the late 90s who grew up in western lake forest and we worked doing cable tv in that town on occasion. He would tell endless stories about his time growing up there. He actually lived on the property for a short while in the early 80s. Most of what you hear is true about this mansion, but he had some great stories of his own he would tell. The house was approachable as of the early 2000s when we did cable up there. It was an eary place even in the brightest, sunshiny mid day! You could drive right up the driveway to the front of the house. The grounds were so well kept but you never saw anybody around. Ya kinda felt like someone was watching you the whole time so we never stayed long. Like to get back someday

A friend of mine who grew up in Lake Forest ventured into the Schweppe residence while it was abandoned, before it was purchased in the 1980s.  I was not a believer in "ghost photos" until she showed me the pictures she had taken.  Note, the photos were taken in the days before digital cameras, and could not possibly have been altered by the teenager my friend was back then.  The photos showed an outline of a ghastly human face in a wood panel, a misty-looking entity in a bedroom, and yes, there was that window.  My friend is logical and rational, and after that visit to the Schweppe mansion, she became a real believer in haunted houses.

i know someone who is friends with, it is a great big clump of  money , and nothing else. it is  a  story now  about how people believe that furnishings make you better, they  don't. this  story is a great example of gross  endulgence.

who cares if it looks like a furniture store?

maybe , they  can place a  'going out of ' sign in the window.

i think it is sad, the whole story, then and now. The only thing spooky is the way

people get caught up in others lives.

The story of this house is sad. Suicides, divorces, and people trapped in their bodies, just ask Mrs. Denton poor thing. The kitchen is about the only thing that really needs changed, it’s trapped in the 80's. It’s almost like Dunnellen hall, aka the Leona Helmsly mansion. Google them and you will see. Dunnellen is undergoing a free fall in price $125 million to $95 to 75, and now it’s at $60 million with no buyers. Google the Whitemarsh Hall mansion, watch it on YouTube. The grounds and the ruins are said to be haunted. Made of a mix of marbles, stone, concrete, and limestone, it was over 100,000 sq feet, and over 1.5 million cubic feet of air to heat and cool. An imposing example of Palladian architecture, perhaps the best one that has ever been built in the united states. It has a smaller sister mansion, Lynnwood, its also known to be haunted. The Crocker mansion in NJ at 45,000 sq feet on 3 stories is one beautiful mansion, its wood work some of the best ever crafted in america, by some of the worlds finest master woodworkers. Though with its brick and limestone facades it looks like a highschool or college. You can find it on google too. It’s haunted but recently was bought for 8.8 million. It was once priced around 30 million. Dunnellen hall is grossly overpriced by at least a factor of 2 if not 3. The Shweppe estate is about twice the price it listed for in 1992. 1994-2007 was one big bubble, so i think the prices of these mansions will come down to better reflect their market values. Currently 405 mayflower in Lake Forest is listed at $15 million, down from a high of $18 Mil. In 1992 it was listed at $8 million. The Denton estate is in shambles; she was a victim of fraud and lost millions. She lost in court to mr webster that bastard. Now the house and estate are controlled by a cult of lawyers, and she owes millions in taxes. It was bought in 87'ish for between 3-5 million, it was renovated and from all accounts it is in pretty good shape. There is one area of plaster damage in the curved vaulted ceiling of the upstairs hall but that was a few years ago I’m not sure if it’s still damaged. In Carmel indiana they had the beautiful English/French Tudor country home, the 20,000 sq ft Perez house and though built in 1990 it was said to be haunted. It took forever to be sold and when no one could be found to move in they demolished it. It was only 17 years old. The Hilbert mansion located at 1143 west 116th street in carmel will be another modern haunted mansion if its not sold soon. It’s the 2nd largest residence in indiana, (24,500-25,000 sqft) its an amazing interpretation of a french cheateau in a country estate on about 40 acres. It’s a bargain for 9.9 million, once priced at 25million it has 30,000 sq ft of additional and beautiful buildings. The simon mansion at 10110 ditch road in carmel will become another haunted mansion. Mr simon recently died, you might have heard of the simon mall group which owns a hell of a lot of malls in the USA, Or maybe Porkeys the movie? That’s all him. It is the largest home in indiana, almost 42,000 sq ft, plus a very large guest house. It has its own huge golf course; the estate is on about 100 acres. Playing golf with poltergeist! They don’t make them like this anymore. In elkhart indiana they have the Ruthemere mansion from the early 1900s, beaux arts style, very beautiful. It is said you can hear the cries of a baby. Down the road from that mansion due west on beardsley is the Mansion built in 1941 with french and english cues, its about 8,000 sq ft and though beautiful it is built over the same spot of a large mansion owned by the Davenports built in the 1850's Erskine manor, home to Albert Erskine the CEO of studabaker is at 1207 erskine manor hill road, in south bend off of Miami street. It’s currently for sale at 749k, Its a little smaller at 8400 sq feet and a 4000 sq ft finished basement (12.4K sqft), it needs some restoration, and remodeling/renovation, but a bargain if your into haunted historical homes. To own any of these homes requires the owners to be rich. The furniture and collections necessary to fill such large spaces would be no small undertaking. The scale of any repair, restoration or remodel job would be quite a feat. The taxes and upkeep of theses homes and grounds, and to heat and cool them range from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Burnt Offerings, that is what these mansions are, it sucks the life force out of you. Watch the movie, or read the book.

My friend's mom is the owner of the house.  I was just there last Wednesday 11/25/2009, and I lost my wallet while visiting the house. Not sure if its just a hoax or if I left it at the grocery store but........ still freaky. I've only been in 20-25% of the house. It's was too scary way too dark (even during the day)

The house is still there along with the other 3-4 houses built on the property.

Yes I lost it..... there was only 3 of us in the house. Sure I probably ended up losing it at the grocery store, but the particular chair i was sitting in "steals stuff". I later went back to the house and we destroyed the chair looking for my wallet, and no such luck. as far as the house goes........ its just way too creepy. I can go there and visit anytime I want, but would be even creepier if i just started taking photo's for these forums.......
