When The Rancho Los Amigos Hospital first came about it wasn't the grand structures that reside on the property today. It was small in size, it was only after the epidemic of tuberculosis that the hospital expanded and served as a sanatorium. Please don't confuse sanatorium with sanitarium. Simply put a sanatorium is a hospital which specfically treated those with long term illnesses, typically tuberculosis. Hollydale was one of the largest centers to treat tuberculosis and polio in it's time. As a result of infective medicines and treatments, there were deaths. Some of those treated at Hollydale were Native Americans, Farmers, and Immigrants. It wasn't rare to have the care givers in need of care as well at Hollydale as staff were prone to illness as well. With improvements in medicine and treatment a large treatment facility such as Hollydale was no longer needed and outdated. Hollydale was later converted into a psychiatric hospital and medical center. In the 80s as a result of Ronald Reagan's cuts to psychiatric health centers, Hollydale was systematically shut down. However as it is known nearly a block away on Imperial is the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, which carries on the work of the original Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. Which to this day serves those with long term illnesses and world renowned rehabilitation centers. Anyway the reason why Hollydale hasn't been torn down is because of the hundreds if not thousands of cats that live in the buildings of Hollydale. There have been several attempts by the city and contractors to demolish Hollydale, but they can't do so because of the cats that live there. Hollydale wasn't always boarded up, but when they did board up the windows and doors the cats had no ways of entering or leaving the buildings so eventually they cut holes into some of the buildings and windows so that the cats could move about freely. Until The City of Downey can think of a way to remove the cats from the property safely and humanly, Hollydale still stands. However the City of Downey does make some use out of the property. Some of the buildings are used for training with SWAT Teams. Also one of the buildings on the property serves as The Downey Police Departments Crime Lab. That's why a lot of people get stopped by the cops, or issued tickets for trespassing, because the crime lab is right in the center of Hollydale. However if you're walking a dog or walking through Hollydale with out looking suspicious, and with out snooping around the buildings you should be fine. Word of advice, don't try to jump any of the fences near the railroad tracks. Cops show up in the blink of an eye. Also if you take a camera and you are going to get stopped by the cops, they will make you delete any and all photos on the camera. My advice remove the SD card from the camera before the cops get to you. My husband and I drove around the location which takes up about three blocks worth of buildings all abandoned. We did not go inside but did circle around several times snaping numerous pictures with two different cameras. At one point while driving past one of the main entrances, we heard a loud scream but not like a blood curttling scream in the movies, more like that of a mad woman in agony. That was the only thing you could say was out of the norm while driving around but the more I review, enhance and examine the pictures that we took (at least 50) I have come to find out that we were definitely being watched. There is a difference between happy spirits and unhappy spirits. With the photos that taken that night that this place does not host happy ones. Some orbs have demonic face (yes orbs CAN have faces) and one picture in particular that makes my stomach turn. It is a full fledged figure of a man watching us. His face is pale and disfigured and he appears to be wearing some sort of coveralls. I kid you not, he looks like something right out of your worst nightmares. I have no problem proving the proof either.

We checked out a lot of buildings, lots of stuff there laying around, broken. We never saw anything supernatural but it is a fact that the authorities (that have a courthouse and a station right next door) do come and comb the place every night we went (went twice). we dodged and got away from them both times but one of us got pulled over on the way out the first time when he decided to leave early (we watched him from inside the building). they just told him to not come back.

We found boxes and boxes of sering needles all over the auditorium and other rooms and not many books to speak of, you dont want needles being thrown at you or broken glass which is found literally everywhere. be safe

AnonymousVisiter 207.233.88.250       Comment# 8883     1/28/2008 5:07:00 PM       Edit / Flag       Reply To This i've been there alot of times have walked up and down the place nothing scary but ive had to fun from the cops plenty but never got caught because of the way we went in we always got away even when we were in groups of 10 or more what you have to do is park across the street preferibly yum yum donuts theres plenty of parking then just walk up the street going west on imperial when u get to the light just cross the street and enter next to the gated apartments and street that goes in there cut straight behind the apartments and u will be safe there no cops pass by there then u keep going and theres only one exit and noone is ever there u have to cross a little street that's a caulde sac and theres a buildidn with the lights always on an ppl workin even if its 4 am just walk in their parkin lot and keep goin straight once u hit the dirt make a left an theres a hole in the gate a pretty big one big enough to fit cars through it then ur there in the asylum word of advice don't use flashlights outside for any reason cause the cops see them easily only inside if u have any questions just leave a comment on here

(it might just be) however my dad was in that same hospital when he was a kid. it wasnt a mental hospital it was just a hospital. this hospital is where they had a room called the iron lung. the hospital was closed down due to the building of the new hospital (rancho los amigos which is on the other side of the street). also the buildings had alot of asbestos and lead paint and many hazardous materials which are now outlawed. the light? its the kitchen where they still prepare food to this day. and the books flying at people? there were some homless people living down in building 119. and the reason it hasnt been knocked down is because the U.S. marines use this place as well as cops as an urban environment training facility. you can also ask the downey public records for info. they will read the same junk i just told you. my dad said to me. "i was there when i was a kid, i made it out but many other kids that were there.....they never left that place". by that he meant they died there. dont get me wrong its creepier than shit there during the day i can only imagine what its like going at night.

AnonymousVisiter 71.109.252.65       Comment# 12008     4/18/2008 9:14:00 PM       Edit / Flag       Reply To This ok i have been too this place alot its big really big and yes it is a hospital and an aslyum and alot of other stuff industrial work area some still active the exzact location of the aslyum i know it. get to the seven ten freewayexit impereal go right then make a right on the second street named garfield ave.there should be a carls jr. on the corner go down that road and make a left on the second light follow that road and park on the street to the right before the tracks get out cross that street go to the tracks cross them and then follow them down there should be a hole in the fence go through it then follow the path to the dirt hill and an old buildingstop look for cops and then go to the left and cross the road to the open gate with the old garages and walk through there and then go into the court yard next to the building and go to the wheel chair ramp and watch for cops at this point cross the service road to the next building and wait there again look for cops cause they cruise these service roads then cross to the big buidings go in between them and then enter where you can thats the aslyum part go up the metal stair case and to the roof and climb through a window and you are in i know this place really well and you have to be careful of cops cause there is still an active ward there is for the criminaly insane of california and this place is big really big like military base big!!!!!
