Location Description:

Dudley roadthere is an abandoned insane asylum back in the woods. You can hear screams and chains while walking down the path. Reports of being followed home & haunted by these spirits. November 2003 Update: The story behind Dudley Rd is that there was a Nunnery on the Rd and 3 Nuns were hung for practicing witch craft. And you can now see them haunting the Rd. There is a house that was built on the Rd where the witches were hung and had to be abandoned months later because the house began to sink. The house is still there and in oddly in the ground up to the second floor windows. Every year it sinks a little more.

This is urban legend. Story gains more steam from such publications such as Weird New England and Weird Massachusetts. There nothing here but road with a couple farms a Nun retreat, Sisters of St Paul. Nothing here.

A friend of mine used to live in that area for years.  He's heard the stories but only will confirm this;  Many times in passing the convent he would notice lights inside the windows.  They had the character of candles, either stationary or moving and different colors.  The place was locked and abandoned.

I've been told the place had gone through periods of being used and locked up.  As of today it is locked up, but there appears to be custodial workers going in.  The asylum I know nothing about as there is nothing else near the property.  However, off of carlisle rd on old causeway rd which used to connect to the southern end of dudley there is some sort of large complex, possibly a small asylum.  Will check when I can.

Going down the second part of Dudley road, the large convent on the right called Daughters of St Paul, thats the convent thats supposed to be abandoned and haunted? I only know what ive seen and it appears to be an upkept place with an open retreat home. Is this the haunted convent or is there an old abondoned one somewhere else? any info at all would be appreciated. also heard something about a sinking house on marshland?

That's the place.  A long time Billerica resident confirmed it.  I think the old farm house in front may be more likely the one to watch.  Haven't found out anything about the sinking house.  Will be doing more research on this in the near future.

if you want more people to go i have a crew that usually comes with me and we have infact had a couple experiences with noises but most were thrown out because they could be explained otherwise. We are all local around this area and check out other local spots as well. Like i said if you want people to go with then that would be fun because dudley road is very intriguing.

I'll be going soon with a local longtime resident who will introduce me to the sights, during the day.  Scaredy cat! LOL  I think there may be some confusion here as to what is what on dudley road.  He'll help me clear things up and sort them out for everyone.  There may be the possibility that one or more buildings have been torn out and houses built over them after I discussed with him what I saw.  Once I get that settled then I'll be open to going in with a group at night to check things out.

The sinking house is neither sinking nor a house. It is someone's shed that is shaped like the top floor of a house. You can find it across the road from the house with the chain rope that has the sign "No U Turns" on it. It's just before/ just after the really bad part of the road, depending on what direction you're coming from.
Here's a picture of it:

The convent is not abandoned. It is used as a retreat house. It's not used all year round, but for the most part it is. At this time, it's in use.
The mannequins on Ottobahn Way were put there by the people who live there, probably so no one goes down their private way.
I will not believe that there is an abanonded asylum near there until someone can explain where exactly it is. As of right now, I don't think it exists.
This road is spooky, but I highly doubt that it's haunted. I have been down more times then I can even remember. If it is haunted, it's most likely because people are giving the place so much attention. The more you feed a haunting, the stronger it becomes.

I've been around the neighborhood and only found the Harvard field study place on the end of old causeway.  Its an animal and nature research place of some sort.  No sign of anything asylum-ish anywhere.  Check google earth for a great satellite image.

Is there any evidence of nuns being hanged on Dudley road? Because if so it is very difficult to obtain information regarding this matter. I have lived in Billerica my whole life and now live on Dudley road and have yet to see any signs of spiritual activity; nor have I ever been able to obtain any names, dates, or death records indicating these "so-called" hangings. And I can tell you one thing the sisters of St Paul Convent is still up and running everyday so maybe that is why you see the lights on...ah-DOy!

I've found nothing to sustantiate the nun hanging story and have interviewed several long time billerica residents.  No proof to be found just stories.  At times in the past according to witnesses, the place had been closed and that's when they saw the lights.  However, I will be checking this out further when I get one of my witnesses to visit the entire dudley road area and go over the stories.  Will report what I find then.

I live 5 minutes away and go down the road all the time. I agree it's creepy and I take my friends down there all the time to freak them out, but people need to stop saying the convent is "abandoned". Churches in the area use it for retreats, so it's really not that weird to see lights on or people there

Iv'e been up and down Dudley rd at midnight, and at dead time over and over i didn't see anything.and how would one know that spirits follow someone home? I'd say,or think that the best time of the season to visit Dudley rd is at the end of October going into November when all of the leaves and bushes are gone where you're able to see a lot more. And if the sinking house is up to the second floor then would someone explain why there is a cement foundation holding up the house? Thank you; R.LaMarche

that old sunken house looks like an old smithy for the horse farm behind it.  The foundation is definitely a modern replacement.  I'm betting it replaced the old crumbling one or the building was moved here from someplace else, a common thing to do years ago.  In time I'll research all these oddities.  Right now my schedule is full, but I am developing connections with long time residents of the town.

i went there with a few friends and the covenent is St Thelca's and its still in use so obviously lights there can be explained...the only weird thing that happened was i had my video camera with me that i had charged all night and tested before we left and when we got out of the car on dudley road it would not turn on. but that it not really enough proof that its haunted...

I grew up in Bedford, lived there from 59 to 85 and still go there all the time to the VA. I'm one of what was called "the boat landing crew" back in the day when we use to have bonfires at the bedford landings and partied. I've been down old causeway a million times, that is a harvard place. Before you get that far out on 225 the dump use to be on the left and on the right is the swamp the gypsy moths ate up in the 70's. As for Dudley Road, the convent has been active many times and the area is much more developed than it was 25 years ago. There was a time that it was a rough trip all the way around but we use to go out there to get laid. I think a lot of what is there might be the old timers with houses out there. Once about halfway around is the field we use to go with dates, just before that was a tree with a branch that went straight across the road with a weird notch in it, like a "V". We were always told an indian was hung there and a nun was hit by a car and you could see her face in a tree. That got pranked and faked, but once years later I think I saw the original tree while pumping a septic tank at the house at the corner of Dudley and Nashua but on the short part of Dudley heading towards Concord road. Once when the road swings right coming from the Bedford end a little before the convent we saw up near a stonewall under some big pine trees three mounds that looked like graves, behind it in the woods seemed to be an old graveyard. A few days later the mounds were gone, but the same night we saw them when went by the hanging tree there was a smashed pumpkin with tomato juice or something all over the road. Of course we thought it was head until we got out and looked. But then it was October too. My parents would talk of an animal out there that looked like half dog and half cat, but I'm willing to bet that's a Fischer. The one real thing I know that isn't paranormal was a friend went 4-wheeling in a blazer out there and had problems with his truck. When he came back to get it the property owner wouldn't allow him on his land. It is a bit of a rush to go there, but that's because your head gets to thinkin. But I honestly believe the older residents just want to keep people out and tbh I wish they would stop developing out there. It's a cool place. I grew up near springs brook and there was a swamp behind it that we use to think was haunted. I think that was boyish imagination though. Oh also once out on Gould road in the 70's (71 maybe) a VA patient killed himself and a kid I went to school with dog came come with the head in his mouth.

found the street online... went tonight with three other people. nothing happened, but it was still scary at night time. however, the house we saw is not the one in the picture. it literally appeared to be sinking into the ground... but it was a much bigger house. the driveway was chained off, and the side of the house facing the street had sensor lights on the side (turned on). didnt look like anyone lived there.... we turned around at that point (the road looked too rough for the car). where are the mannequins?? we'd like to look into that..

Is there any relationship between Dudleyville, CT and Dudley Road in Billerica? Dudlyville, CT is an abandoned town, and the area is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the country.

I agree with Daron, until someone actually says how to get to this asylum in not going to believe it. People keep talking about it and how the first floor is sinking but no one ever feels like giving directions so the rest of us can checkit out. someone give directions and it would be much appreciated.

I drove down Dudley Road yesterday in daylight and didn't want to go past the bridge with a sign that said something like: "Cross this bridge at your own risk." The road got narrower and narrower with lots of trees. I guess it was kinda freaky, but probably more freaky at night!

I have seen the shed, as Daron points out. I have been living in Billerica for 20 years... no sign of a ghost. I'll tell you what I've also seen. My sister and I have seen nuns in the convent. It was broad daylight and were either heading out or returning. This must have been a few months ago Proves that the convent is still operational.

There is no asylum. The convent is occupied and it is really terrible that the nuns are bothered all the time by people trying to find where they were hung from the trees. There were never any killings or anything down on Dudley Road. The house is a pump house for the house across the street. They have had to chain off their driveway because there are so many people bothering them. I have lived on Dudley Road for 35 years and never have seen anything ghostlike. There are alot of wild animals etc. down here. Coyotes sound really strange at night when they howl. It is really scary for people that live here when strangers are walking up and down the road late at night for no apparent reason. Please give us a break. Enjoy the road's beauty, but do not invade our space by walking around and trying to scare us. Post where you all live and we can come in groups and walk around.

It may be a public road but you will be arrested if you make yourself a public nuisance.  Respect these people's homes.  With some respect and politeness you may even get some assistance with your paranormal research.  The Billerica Police will side with the residents.  Deal with that.

Well said Deepvoid. My name is Rachel and I am the founder of a paranormal group. It's very important that you are respectful whenever you are investigating. Even if the road is public, there are houses on this quiet street. They don't need to be woken up by flashes, and screaming. This is a wonderful paranormal hotspot but not due to all the hype people have said. There is an ACTIVE nunnery. There is fenced in conservation land. There is NOT an asylum and per the town of billerica's financial and business records as researched in the library there has never been any record of one being on dudley road. show me a picture of a sign or the building that clearly shows this asylum ON dudley road and we can talk. We went last week to train our new members but only AFTER stopping in at the police station and explaining ourselves and what our intents were and speaking with a resident who allowed us on his property at night to observe. If your intent is good and you are respectful, I strongly encourage you to walk the part in front of the nunnery quietly and just observe what you feel and here. there is something there, just not sure what.

ummm...there's public land and a conservation area there too...I grew up in Bedford, I posted a long post above. It's funny, all these years that's the only street in Bedford that people would complain about people walking on. In fact growing up in the 60s and 70s we would cut through people's yards everywhere in town and that was on paths from many before us and no one complained. (like behind where steffinelli's used to be or sunset to dunster and many, many more places.) My street (near the old page school) had horses walking along it everyday, we never complained about that and they left something behind to complain about. But if you rode your bike on Dudley road, by the time you got out to north road there was a cop asking you what you were doing. I'm going back to the days when Zwickers sold mini-bikes and it was fun just to ride out there for the day...we were like 12...was it you that called the cops on us? Get a grip deepvoid, if people are staring in your windows or trespassing than call the cops. Otherwise it's a free country, a beautiful country road and people walking on the street aren't doing anything wrong. Dudley road has always been known for it's snobs, the only people that ever caused problems were those who felt they were better than the rest of us. You're fortunate to live in a beautiful area, it does sadden me that it's been developed so much, but stop treating everyone like they are invading your space. The only person that was worse than you Duds was old lady Hayden. Get over yourself

So stay on the public & conservation land and no one will have cause to complain. But, you really can't expect the residents of Dudley Rd to allow you or anyone else from running around their property looking for a bunch of ghosts.

uhm....that's exactly what I was saying...I'm not gonna invade someones privacy....The conservation land I'm sure is closed at night anyhow. But like I said, as kids riding around the "loop" on bikes the cops would ask us what we were doing. We never did anything wrong out there, I've never been any closer than the street to the convent. It's a country road with fun myths, like I said if people are on your land, peeping in windows then by all means call the cops. But I know if you're not a member of the private dudley road club, not recognized and you're just walking on the street you're gonna get harassed and treated as if you're a criminal....ridiculous. Dont assume people are going to bother you or disturb you just because they're walking on the street. There aren't as many ghost hunters as the snobs that live out there want you to believe. That's okay, because I know another old townie (born and raised in Bedford in the 60s and 70s too) who's an independent recording artist and it just so happens he is writing a song (rock) about the myths. He's played on internet radio stations everyday all over the world, soon dudley road will go global.

I went there a couple of years ago with a couple of people and we saw the nunnery and the tree and such. Mostly, we just made ourselves scared and saw things that probably were in our heads. However, I went back there recently with one of the people I was originally with and we couldn't find it. We drove up and down Dudley a dozen times and it just wasn't there. That was the wierdest part of any of it. We were so sure we knew exactly where it was...

You guys are too funny. I used to be one of the "nuns" from the Daughters of St. Paul who went there often. The "nuns" use the place for retreats, conventions, meetings, and rent it out for similar purposes to Churches and Church groups. I was there when it was a run-down, spider-infested, very spooky-looking retreat house, but now, it's very beautiful and quiet. Believe me, I've never experienced any ghost-like or paranormal activity, although it is kind of "spooky" at night especially when we walk through the place with very little light on. There is a chapel there and many rooms upstairs and downstairs. There is a court yard as well as other paths in the back, making retreat very solemn. So, unfortunately, there is nothing to see there, just darkness at night with just some lights in the retreat house. By the way, the retreat house is called "st. Thecla's Retreat House" and is owned by the Daughters of St. Paul, who have their Provincial House in Jamaica Plain, Boston, MA. Also, someone's imagination has created the "hanging of the nuns", because I know for sure none of the "nuns" got hung......no asylum either.:(

IF YOU LIVE ON DUDLEY ROAD or are a Nun who worked there, email me at JasonGrimm@GrimmWebsite.com I'd like to do a little interview on the truth about it that gets down to the real info. Possibly do some video of it also and take some pictures. I'm currently living in Lowell, MA. When I was younger in highschool I remember visiting this road because of the legend. "Old Dudley Road" (as it was referred to by most kids) was a really creepy and scary pitch black dark road back then before it was finally paved. Over 15 years ago I visited this road with friends every October. Every time I visited, I'd bump into other kids that were driving thru it as well. It was a VERY bumpy dirt road with holes everywhere that would make the car wobble up and down, throwing the passengers around in the car. The trees would have carvings in them, painted words and emblems, and their were signs people put also. I assume it was kids that did it, though some people would claim that it was done by a cult. That of course wasn't true as far as I know. It was said that someone hack sawed statue of Mary's hands off. I am not sure if this was true but I seem to remember it. I could be wrong. I do remember thinking that someone had to be sick in the head to do such a thing. Anyway, I'd like to do something on the road to put on local cable access and online video YouTube.

Grimm - in response to your comment regarding the removal of the Virgin Mary's hands. That actually did happen, but not at the convent. The incident happened at a Catholic Church in town, the hands were broken off and later replaced. The statue has since been moved to a more secure site. And to all, once again there has never been an insane asylum on Dudley Road or anywhere else in Billerica. All you need to do to confirm this is to access town Records. C

No nuns were ever hung or murdered on Dudley Road, the convent is now an active retreat house so there is often activity there, mostly on the weekends, which explains why "sightings" occur from time to time.

"Comment: I think you may be just a bit envious of the people who live on Dudley Rd,I have driven and walked that road many times and have neither been bothered by ghosts nor residents. Maybe you are a Dudley Road resident wannbe." if that is directed at my post above saying the neighbors should get over it because there is conservation land than you really are of base. I grew up in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bedford, my family was one of the original charter members who started wedgewood. My father was Raytheon upper management starting in the 40s. I would love to live on Dudley Rd if I were to move back to town. But as I wont be moing back I'm hardly a Dudley rd wannabe, especially now that it's all yuppies anyhow. If I could go back to the 60s, hell yeah I'd love to live there but not now. Not just Dudley rd either, the proerty taxes are brutal, the town dumped every good thing that was available for the youth, I still wouldn't drink the water after what BASF did to our water supply, the town sold out years ago to businesses. I wont even get into the damage the condos on shawsheen did in the pits, use to be several rare species of birds living in there. Bedford has really changed, some may like it better but not me. I'm happy in my home, in a town that wont allow changes, no new businesses and it shades of Bedford past. It's still pretty close though and I'm in Bedford all the time, care to guess where?

Iv lived in Billerica for 32 years Grad of B.M.H.S. . and my family has been in Billerica since 1940. The story's of Dudley rd are just story's. I use to ride my dirt bike down there and have drank there on more than one occation at night when I was in high school.. even back in 1991 there was story's. But at that time it was the nuns were practicing satanism and it was the convent of the crooked cross and there was a well in the basment that was the gate to hell lmao.. Its so funny how things change over the years. I had a friend that lived there on Dudley rd His parents still live there and I know for a fact that its just a made up story.. Yes it is a scary place at night and its a great place to bring your girl friend.. But its just a made up story buy some juniors back in the late 80's to screw with the freshman in BMHS one night.. Its what we call hazing..lol.. This is comming from a townie.. Yes you might find ghosts in the area. There was native american artifacts found all through the area and surrounding towns. There were men killed in the civil war in the surrounding towns as well as the grave yard that is up the street.. But nothing ever was real about the myths about the convent, asylum, satanism hangens or anything of that nature.. It was a lets go scare the hell out of the freshman cuz thats what we did for fun!!!! But have fun looken Just respect the people that live down there they will call the cops ...

Ladies and Gents, let's examine the facts of this subject by extracting the postings by those in the know - the Nun, the residents, and the Paranormal Investigator that rightly bothered to do some research. The is no Asylum, and thus you will never find one. The sinking house is probably an interestingly shaped pump house. The Nunnery is an active Retreat Facility owned and operated by an order of Nuns. There is no record of any hanged Nuns. The area has no known human source or cause for any paranormal activity. People can work themselves up to imagine or actually summon paranormal forces. The area itself might actually have "bad vibes" and be prone to produce paranormal activity, especially with so many people feeding it energy through belief. And, as civilized Truth seekers, we must have respect for those that actually live in the area we are trodding all over and be respectful of their homes and privacy, as we would expect in our own situations. Let's work from the facts and keep an open mind as to any other possibilities, and, much as humans love the thrill of the Unknown, let's look for the Truth, whatever it might be. Maybe the best thing to do would be for people that really want to find the answer to band together and divide up the responsibilities of a true investigation. Check on-line databases, histories, library, Town Hall, police records, FOIA to the State and/or Town for any "hanging" information, etc., try using the more esoteric things such as a skilled dowser (for areas of high energy), a proven psychic, compass readings (any deviations), etc. Or, you could keep your eyes closed and just scare yourself silly and enjoy the thrill...

And i agree if everyone is determined to find the truth do some serious research dont just go and psych yourselves out! Also be respectful of the people that live there. So many kids go looking for ghosts that the residents are probly way passed annoyed when they hear kids snooping around their property late at night!

I have just returned from a "dusk" ride down Dudley Rd.  The convent is highly visable and in great shape.  The building behind the convent appears to be at least 3 stories with bares on the windows and a keep out sign.  Behind that it appears to be 2 or 3 small buildings and a basketball court.  Further down the road I found the entrance to the conservation area.  There appears to be a trail.  I would like to know if there are any known maps of this trail, and if it does indeed lead down behind the convent.  As far as  the sinking house I didn't see it.  Might have just missed it.  I'm looking for some concrete evidence and am prepared with the equipment to do a ghost hunt.

There is nothing weird about Dudley road. It's just another bumpy road in Billerica. The road has a convent on it so what is at any different than a rectory or a church? I have lived in Billerica my hole life and just moved to Dudley in April. I walk my dog in the dark every night.it's not even scary.I don't have weird dreams or odd con incidents.

There is NOTHING different or unusual about Dudley Road!!!! I live on Dudley. Why do you all think that the road is haunted????? Because there is a convent? Or because you all have no life?? Stop looking for ghost it's a HUGE waist of time. Do you also walk around grave yards looking for ghosted because that sounds like more fun than driving down down Dudley looking for thinks that aren't even on the road.

Wow, I didn't even know this site existed, thank you internet. That said, back in the early early 90's, having grown up in the area, we heard all of these stories, so my friends and I went down Dudley Road a few times at different times of day and night. Here's the stories we heard back then... The Convent was a place where nuns went when they broke their vows with the Lord. The crooked cross was because a guilt-ridden nun hung herself from it. I heard a few stories about the statue of Mary with no hands and how it's eyes would look at you (because someone painted them...) A nun was hung from a tree as well, in some stories it was an indian who vowed revenge against the white man which explains the hauntings, and even other stories said a colonial era farmer's wife was hung there and he vowed revenge. An escapee from the Billerica House of Corrections was hiding on the road and was discovered by a group of nuns who were then slain by the escapee (there has never been an insane asylum there, the only logical spot was the Billerica H.O.C.) The sinking house had the "well to Hell". Back then, someone(s) had spray painted "chalk outlines" on the street and tree that supposedly a nun/indian/farmer's wife was hung from (with an old rope remnant still hanging from the limb.) During the day you could see all of this stuff, but at night when you whisked over an outline with a flashlight, you'd totally bug out. The nuns were there, and really nice actually. One night we tried using a Ouija board in the road and we got hit with rocks and heard whispers, etc. We took off because it was a bit freaky, and we didn't want to get hit by rocks anymore (that's the logical to do.) Another night we were there, and my friend and I were walking on either side of the street, well, the only weird thing was that someone popped up from the tall grass that was there and punched my friend in the nuts, I chased whoever it was but never caught them. Was it a ghost or Satan himeslf, no. A few years later, in college, I met someone who lived on Dudley, and because these stories was such a hot topic, the kids in the area used to hide and make witches cackles and noises like that. They were probably the same kids that hit my friend in the nuts, and that's exactly what they did countless times, messed with folks. The "high heel" sounds could also be horses since there are a few in the area. Kids partied out there on the conservation land, and as a few folks have said, they have been doing it for years, so...anyways, if you aren't looking for hoodlums or horses you're not going to see them, get it? Is Dudley Road haunted? Maybe, but what I know and have read here, there is a lot more evidence saying it isn't. It's totally a freaky scene if you aren't used to it or let your mind play tricks on you. Maybe a group like TAPS or Paranormal State should investigate, and do just that investigate not trespass or disturb the nuns and residents of the area. I don't believe any of them would wish to deal with such a myth. You know, Livingston Street in Tewksbury, MA had all sort of weird stories and how Tewksbury State Hospital had these tunnnels where they kept the really bad insane folks (this could have been the origin of the Asylum myth,) and the abandoned houses were haunted. There was one abandoned house that always seemed to have an attic light on even though there was no power. That's weird, really. We looked and searched and found nothing but trouble though. Development (like on Dudley Road,) has changed this area and once the Halloween attraction popped up, the weirdness ended...does anyone remember the Livingston Street/ Tewksbury State stories from back in the day? This was well before the Livingston Street Terror...

Trust me, I have walked up and down and all around Dudley Road. Nothing is haunting it besides your overactive imaginations. Do yourselves a favor before checking it out, research the following, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 272 Section 53 regarding disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. You do not have to be trespass to be arrested, if you are on a public street and make a nuisance out of yourself you can and will be prosecuted.

Hey, I'm doing a final paper on myths involving religion, and I'm focusing on one in the area. If anyone wouldn't, I'd like to end an email of a few questions to anyone willing to answer. They'd be simple one, like what is the myth version you've head of and you're response if alterations were in the myth. My email is xxzombiegirlfriend@gmail.com. An help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ive lived in billerica all my life and just about evryone i kows been there. my bother said somthing about a bridge?? idk if its even near there but its related to the nun story... he and his friend drove over it and their car just stopped running. then under the bridge (not very high up), you could see the bushes moving and a girl whispering. so they got in the car and could hear a woman's heels clacking, only they sounded a if she was next to you even though they were in the car with the windows up. who ever saying there isnt a sinking house? they obviously couldnt find it because its there... dont really want to go down there though!
