Abijah Thomas built the Octagon house in 1850. Thomas built the house with 8 sides to protect it from wind damage. He kept slaves to help him work the fields. It is said that in an upstairs room you can still see fresh blood dripping and seeping down one of the walls. You can also hear many strange noises through out the entire premises.

--addition to information 12/8/07 by BlooBoo--
Abijah Thomas was born May 1, 1814 and died on December 1, 1876 of pneumonia at his octagon house. The octagon house, as it is known present day used to be known as "Mountain View" The house was built from 1856-57. Abijah is said to have designed the custom corner bricks of this house himself. He and his wife had 12 children. It is worthy to mention at this point that a book about this house and the man who built it mentions several funerals which took place at this house including Abijah`s own as well as one for one of his daughters. Others were held here as well.

The reason this place is thought to be haunted would be the experiences of many locals who have entered this creepy place. Some say that they have entered the house with friends just for fun only to be confronted by a ghost or evil/tormented spirit and chased away. Historic records show that Abijah Thomas owned at least 12 slaves during the time prior to abolishment of slavery. Some say that these evil spirits are the ghosts of slaves that he tortured. A book was written about Abijah Thomas, his family and the house in the mid 1980s by Mack Sturgill called "Abijah Thomas and his Octagonal House" this book is available at the Smyth-Bland Regional Library (www.sbrl.org) in Marion VA. I think they have 2 copies last time I checked. This book has little to say about any slave torture but rather says that it is thought that some of Abijah`s slaves liked him so well and liked working at his farm that they remained there after slavery was abolished. The book also states that after the property was looked at more closely, there is no physical location for the "haunted cellar" that is a popular subject for ghost stories. There are also no remains of a cellar.

Supposedly the "haunted cellar" is the most haunted place in the house next to the "dark room" on 2nd floor. The cellar was speculated to be the prime location for beatings and killings of slaves out of the sight of the children whenever they performed poorly in their work. It is acknowledged present day that there isn`t really a cellar around back of the house but people still claim if you stand on the ground where the cellar supposedly used to be, you can hear screams and will most certainly be confronted face to face with an extremely angry ghost who will threaten your very life if you do not leave it in peace. some people feel it necessary to take a rosary, crucifix or some such other spiritual assurance to this location if they dare set foot on it. None of the people I know dared go to the rear of the house.

The "dark room" is located in the center of the 2nd floor and has no windows. It is also rumored that this was the location of many beatings and punishments because of the apparent dark stains on the wood floor. The book by Mack Sturgill features a letter from one of Abijah`s children which states that the room was not used for punishment but rather storage. Sturgill also speculates that it may have been used to store some canned goods that were allowed to spoil and create these dark places on the floor that people want to think is left over blood.

Present day, I doubt that one could even access the upstairs portion of the house due to the poor condition of the stairs and the possibility of falling through the floor. I know for a fact that the floor on the 1st level has holes in it from where people`s feet went through it in recent years. They were not hurt because there`s not that much of a drop on 1st floor. It`s probably about 2-3 feet because the house is built almost on the ground with some sort of a stone foundation underneath according to additional photos in the book. I doubt the 2nd floor is in any better condition. Photographs (featured in this article) from the book show the stairs in 1941 and again in 1985. Given the inaccessibility of the "dark room" people claim that when they are ghost hunting on the 1st floor and around the property, they are able to hear violent screams, cracking of whips, rattling of chains and feel a cold tingly sensation at the foot of the stairs at the time during which they are hearing these sounds coming from the upstairs.

One of the 2nd floor windows on the rear side (3rd one to the right in my photos from 12/8/07) is busted out and has an especially jagged piece of glass suspended at the top. People have also said that a ghost tossed someone out this window for insisting upon entry to the "dark room" years ago. I doubt anything like this happened. What really could have happened was that someone decided to go into the house after it was condemned (in the early 70s) with some friends and possibly got drunk and fell from the window. I don`t remember hearing anything like this (I lived in the area for 22 years) but I won`t say that it never happened. This is just one "logical" explanation of what could have happened with the window. I also find it odd that if this window was busted out, why was it the only unbroken window in the house at the time? All of the windows appear to be busted out with only small pieces of glass around the edges. I am not sure how this happened. I would guess over time--it just seems odd that one window would remain. I will note that this particular window seemed to have the most remaining glass still attached to the window compared to the others.

Another story that was told to me by a friend of mine in 2002 states that a group of people visited the house one night in the summer just when it was beginning to get dark. This was also before someone moved into the rental house directly behind the octagon. They entered the house through a window from the side which at that time, was the easiest access point. (see photo of house before it was cleaned off) Supposedly they walked through the house from the front side all the way to the rear side where the kitchen is located. One of the females in the group had a cross necklace which was noted to have been rising off her chest and was torn from her neck by an unseen force. This frightened them all, they ran and left. A few weeks later another set of people went into the house and supposedly found the necklace covered in blood laying neatly on the stairway.

Yet another popular story that I have heard re-told quite a bit over the years is that if you go to the property on the night of December 1st you can see a creepy blue-white light traversing through the fog from the graveyard to the house and back. This is supposed to be the ghost of Abijah Thomas visiting the house on the anniversary of his death.

12/8/07- I drove to the octagon house and noticed that there was a small place in which I could park on the front side of the house without causing too great of a disturbance to anyone or anything.

There is a house located directly behind the Octagon (visible in some of the photos) where someone lives now. I did not attempt entry in the octagon house because I was afraid that someone would call the police on me for trespassing. Also, all of the 1st floor windows and doors have been boarded up to prevent entry because the building is dangerous. Rather than approach the house, I parked the car off the road, stepped out, took a few pictures and left it as I found it. It was an overcast day today, cold and misty but I still felt a surge of strange energy building within me while taking these photos. Although I find the place to be just a little on the creepy/spooky side, I have never really experienced anything especially strange during the 2 visits to the property I have made. I did not enter the property because I did not have permission but I plan on requesting permission now that I have the contact information for the owner of the house.

I have copied some photos from Mack Sturgill`s book and posted those as well as the 3 I took today when I visited the Octagon House. I hope that everyone will find these interesting and if you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I am very interested in this place and would be happy to try and answer them.

This house is located in Thomas Bridge near Marion VA. Take Interstate 81 S to exit 47. Follow 11 South Until you come to an intersection. You will see an old bridge on the right. Turn left. Go down the road through a series of curves (this is in the "Rolling Hills area" Continue until the road ends at the Adwolf Fire Department. Turn left here. This is Thomas Bridge Road. You will drive a little piece down the road. There`s a cemetary on the left on the hill before you get to the house. There are 2 tall tombstones visible from the road. These are the stones of Abijah and his wife. Just past this on the left you will see the Octagon house. Octagon House Road is a dead end and goes to someone`s driveway but there`s a space behind the house where you can park and get out to look at it if no one is around. Usually people don`t say too much if you`re just looking and not bothering anything. it`s somewhat of a local attraction.

All of these horror stories about ghosts, flying rakes and such aren`t exactly true. Yes, everyone in Smyth County has been to the place and it`s spooky but the truth of the matter is that you can`t get upstairs because the stairs are rotted. This place was condemned in the early 70s. The floors are also rotted making it difficult to get around inside the house. I am told a local by the name of Derek Orr has purchased the house with intentions of restoring it to a Bed & Breakfast. I`ll believe this when I see it.

There`s also a book in the Smyth Bland Regional Library called "Abijah Thomas & His Octagonal House" by Max Sturgill. I think they actually have two copies of this. You will find them on the back wall if they haven`t moved. Nothing is mentioned in this book about ghosts. It`s a history of the house and the owner. Hope this helps!

I have noticed that this place can be visited by free will. The question I have is do you have to get permission from anyone to visit this house? I am part of the SWVAPS Ghost hunting group and this is a very interesting place to visit and to investigate. Please contact me in anyway to let me know if this place is free to visit or do you have to ask anyone to attend it. email me at adam_blev@yahoo.com or our myspace http://www.myspace.com/swvaps and please let me know as soon as possible Thank you :D

I didn't see any hay the last time I was there (December 07) but I did hear that he was attempting to get some sort of grant funding. Only thing with that is that you have to put up some of the money yourself and then some grant organization for restoration of hostoric buildings will match it or something like that.

He was supposedly making a bed and breakfast out of it. Not that there's been any significant changes other than cleaning off the property...

GM. Iam from Thomas Bridge. I was raised a couple of miles from this house,I never went there, but next time I go to Va. Iam thinking of stopping there just to look around. The whole time I lived there I had no ideal that the place was supposed to be haunted.I find it very interesting that I was raised that close to a haunted house. I knew it was on old plantation house and that the man who lived there had slaves, but I did not ever hear any stories of them being tortured or killed. I believe that anytime someone dies whether it be violent or of natural causes that they leave energy behind.

Good luck getting in there now. The guy who owns the place boarded up all of the windows/doors so it's impossible to enter the place. I suppose he done it for liability reasons so if someone did go in and get hurt, they couldn't sue him because they'd be breaking & entering. You can see it quite well from the road and if the person who rents the house behind it isn't home, park in the driveway and look around a bit.

The last time I was at some of my familys, which is the house right behind the Octagon house, there was a small entrance to the back of the Octagon house. From someone who has been there, there is a very angry vibe coming from somewhere around that place, like someone who isn't going to let something go.

Me and my ex wife have gone to the house on two occasions. The folks who lived in the house behind allowed us to look inside. When I was there I went downstairs to the cellar and YES there is a cellar but since has been filled in with dirt so you can't get down in there now. The cellar consisted of little rooms such as maybe their own sleeping areas and there was one larger room in the very back that had chains bolted into the walls. I figured it was where the slaved were chained and whipped. But as far as the rest of the house I felt no evil spirits and I went thru ALL the rooms..even upstairs. At that time there was various pieces of old antique furniture...ie..trunks, chairs, tables, old newspapers and letters. Thom Stone tps20052973@yahoo.com

I was there recently and didn't see any evidence of this cellar. Furthermore, the book by Mack Sturgill doesn't suggest that a cellar was even there. I'm not disputing it but could you tell me where the entrance should be? I assumed that it was probably in the rear of the house.

Also, when were you in the house? I know for a fact that it's been condemned since the early 70s and used for farm storage. I also know that the floors are in such disrepair in the past 15 years or so that it isn't safe for anyone to walk around upstairs in the place and that there's not been any furniture in there for quite a while. People who live in Smyth County as long as I can remember make a big deal out of going in the Octagon House on Halloween night or making a little adventure out of it scrawling their names on walls etc. I've seen a few of these pictures and the place was empty. Maybe there was stuff in there a long time ago but probably not now.

I'd love to talk with you about it. I am interested in gathering as much information about the house as possible. The current owner did not answer phone calls or my letter requesting to look inside the house.

i live in the next town over from marion and i hav seen this house several times. ive never been in it but i would absolutly love to go in it somtime. my grandmother went in it before it was condemned and she said it was very spooky. we drove up to it a few months ago and it was a day when it was raining and it looked even more spooky than usual. i read somewhere that a man interviewed one of the children or grandchildren of Abijah Thomas when she was older. i do believe she has since then passed away but she said that she could remember her family telling her stories about the octagon house and that they never beat or killed any slaves. and that the room upstairs that supposedly is where they used to beat or torture the slaves was just a room where they kept food. and that the so called "blood stain" was jus where they had dropped food or something. im not sure if this was true or not but i just thought i would mention that.

Go by SBRL and check out the book on the house by Sturgill. It used to be near the back of the library on the right hand side. Probably 2nd or 3rd aisle from the back wall. There's 2 copies. That account sounds like what's in the book. I own a copy of it and I still haven't read the whole thing yet. There's nothing spooky at all in the book. In fact, it's kind of boring unless you're interested in the family who lived there and Smyth County and then there's all sorts of info in there. He done a thorough job researching it.

I assume that you live in the area. Send me an e-mail sometime. We should talk. knightrose @ gmail.com. I attempted to contact the owner in December with no luck. I assume that it is the same person who's had it for the past few years.  Last time I was there, the back window was boarded up so that's happened since about 2 or 3 months ago. I drove some friends by who had never seen the place before and ended up turning around at the house behind the place.

This is just funny. I live in Thomas Bridge area for 20 years and never knew anything about this place being haunted. Believe me if I had heard such a think, I certainly would have gone there. The only thing I knew about the house was that it was in obvious disrepair and that hay was stored in it. My dad had been in it before and said much of the wood work and such had been stripped out of the house. It is common for people to do that and use it in another house. I always though it was a neat looking house and wished that someone would fix it up.

I am from marin va. and yet i am still only a teenager. the octagon house seems like one of the koolest things to go see in our town. so of course i have been there at night, sure it is just a normal old rotten house. but still yet the pictures i have taken there tell me that there is some unelxplainable things. the lighting in the pictures the orbs and the shadows. there are also noises you will hear if you just pull up into the drivewayy. i have no doubt in my mind that this place is haunted, and for some odd reason i feel that everytime i am there i can feel an unwelcoming presece. it will speak to you in your mind and you just want to leave then and when you wanna leave you better beleive you will feel watched the whole time you are pulling off octagon house road. the feeling though is amazingg. (: also if you like things like this and live near chillhowie there is a devils house and haunted tunnel. i have evps from the tunnel. you can hear footsteps and also you can hear the breathingg and many other things. and the pictures ,that i have on my myspace (www.myspace.com/fugegurl06), from the house its self in them you can actually see a few faces.

Abijah was the nephew of my 4th great grandfather, his father and my 4th great grandfather were brothers. This land was originally settled by my 5th great grandfather, John Thomas, who is buried in the St. Clair's Bottom Baptist Church cemetary. He operated a mill on the property and was noted for not paying his debts. Maybe the ghosts are some of his creditors who still want their money back.

I know the current owner's daughter and talked to her about the house and yes they are trying to make it a bed and breakfast, and she said she's been there a lot and say's that there are no ghosts or anything that her family has seen or heard while being there but i don't know for sure anyway, right know they are trying to get some funds to fix up the house. Talk to ya later!

I just emailed wsheets25 asking about how to get in contact with the current owner, but if anyone else knows, please contact me at lauren.paul@wachovia.com

I am with VTTV, Virginia Tech Television, and I'm doing a haunted places special this year at places around the area. Also, if you know of any other places around here that would let me film, please let me know; thank you!

I live in an octagon house in another state.  Our ghost stories say a whole lot more about us than the house.  It really is a beautiful house, and need to be restored and given a place of honor in the community.  Maybe it would give some folks a little piece of mind if  something could be done to"lay the ghost(s)" whatever that might be.  I just think the place is crying out for help, not only in straightening out it's history, but also for restoration.  You have a real treasure. (I love living in mine- it has it's weird moments too, but if it is haunted, well, it just means I have company!)

This house is beautiful, I hope that the person who owns this house will restore it, but if he or she is unable to they should put it up for sale or auction it off so that someone else who is able to restore it can purchase this amazing wonderful old historical home. It is a shame for someone to let this home decay. I have seen this house and it is sad that someone has let it get in this kind of shape.

I have been to the site and have pictures taken of all eight sides. I have never been in because the guy who is remodeling the place discourages visitors. I know that the stairs and floor were heavily rotted, which would seem to belie the statements that anyone has been upstairs for many years. The place used to be grown over, but now it has been cleared. I have the pictures if anyone is interested.

i live about 10 minutes away from this house and i have not ever been in it before. but i hear that it is extremely haunted. i would love for the owner of this house to let student studying local history go into this house. we would have to sign a wager but of course we would understand.

I've been to the octagon house the history behind the house is a good story. but when i was there it was just a runned down house. the way it was built was werid to me but i like things that r different. i live like 10 minutes away from the property, kids who seeked in and party have of course vandilized it, which makes me made to do that to a piece of history.

I have just read all these posts and some are right on key and some are just big tall tales..Well I am the person who rents the rental property on the lot with the octagon house. I have lived here going on 7 years, and of course I also was curious about all the tales of this house, I have been everywhere around it and also in it.The floors are in such bad shape the only way to get from room to room is to try and walk on the thin beams if u can find one that is not rotten, and there are 2 stair wells and both are in passible and only people who are familiar with the property can get up them but you have to leap, hop ect, just to get up the stairs..Thwere is no cellar, the bottem of the house is dirt, unless a hole was dug in the dirt thats the onl way anything could be put under the house. The book states that Mr. Thomas had a big hole dug under the house to hide his coffee, sugar, tea, money when the confederate soldiers would come through. All the windowns have had all glass removed and plywood is covering all the windows now except when the wind gets up and blows one or two down, but the owner keeps check on it and as soon as the wind blows one board down it doesnt stay down to long cause the owner will put it back up when noticed..And as far as it being haunted, I have been here 7 yrs. and the only thing i can tell that i know to be true is that I have 2 children my boy is 18 and my daughter is 20,about 3 yrs. back they had went over there after dark to take some pictures and they took several but nothing showed up and they went back ;later to take more and there was one picture that was completly black but u had to look close enough and u could see the outline of a mans face, the face was a long slender face ,slanted eyesbut u had to really look closely to see it , my daughter went to walmart to have a blown up copy made and the camerea is not working anymore and she swears to this day that the picture was of Mr.thomas amd if u look at the book and compare his picture with what we seen on the camera it looks just like mr.thomas..thats about the olny thing i can tell and of course ou will hear sounds coming from any old house .i hear sounds tere all the time but its either a apple falling on the ground or a rotten tree limb falling on the tin roof of the house..and the other thing i find the creepiest of all is that i can look out my back door down at the cemetary where mr.tjhomas is buried and abovbe his grave is a solar powered lightr that comes on everynight when it gets dark, the light will shine bright some nights and it will be dim some nights, dont know if there is a specific date when the light shines brighter but i do know around december the light is beautiful and bright..The 7 years i have been here thwere has been dozens of paranormal investigators to come and ask permission to go over there to do what they do and i tell them i can not give them permission to do and thing that they will need to call the owner..one group when over there at their own choosing and stayed along time one night and before they left they told my daughter they were alot of activity there. but i can tell u that no rakes get thrown not like that and there is no hay being stored only materials that are being used to work on it...and i have never heard any slaves cry or anything like that, now when i first moved here i was scared to death, because the house i live in know was the servants house to mr.thomas and i just knew it was also haunted but as of this day it is not...but if anyone would like to talk or aska ny question feel free to ask.my email is raindance1971@comcast.net or facebook.com/joanne woodward i hope this will help with alot of question and curisioty....

Well as I said before..me and my ex wife walked in the cellar/basement and there were 3 small rooms and a larger room with stone walls and chains pieces attached to the walls. The floor was dirt and there was old furniture on the main level..ie trunks and a big table, chairs..ect cause me and my ex wanted the trunks. Thom Stone

Okay....Visited the Octagon house on Halloween night shortly before midnight and did not see or hear anything unusual. Was very disappointed that we were not attacked or spooked in any way. Did not find a cellar on this property. Also ventured upstairs (with great caution) and did not find anything up there either.

I have been to the Octagon house. We did not go inside as it was boarded up. It was at one in the morning. We had some equipment with us. We caught several evp's. One is of a little girl saying, "Do you want to play." If anyone is interested in hearing the evp's , please, e-mail me. I will share them with you. (brillonwen@yahoo.com)

I live in Marion and went to the octagon house in 2000 with 2 other girls and 2 guys. It was around 2AM. The wood floors were fine and the huge stair case was beautiful of what I could see with our flashlights. I seen the larger room in the very back that had chains bolted into the walls and it scared me. We were loud so the dog that belonged to the house behind the octagon house barked all night. If there was anything spooky to hear, between all of us being loud and the dog, we couldn't have heard it anyway. We did not see any ghost signtings that night either but the place was very dusty.

My dad, brother, and I are in love with the thought of ghost and paranormal activity.
We currently visited the Yorktown Memorial Hospital and loved it.
I'm visiting my grandmother and other family in Marion, VA.
I'd love an address, and if we need permission to pass does anyone know who'll be able to grant it?
Thank You,

What a joke!  I visited this house several times in my teenage years back in the 1980's.  NO ghosts, NO blood oozing off the walls, and for goodness sakes, NO rattling chains or screaming.  The only thing that I heard was the pigeons in the attic rattling things around and cooing like they do.  And, when the wind would blow through the huge windows it would whistle and whine.  The shape of those triangular shaped walls makes the wind blow in and whistle through doorways, halls, and windows.  Also, the roofing tin was loose and would make banging and popping sounds.
I went to school with the man who owns it, though I haven't spoken to him in several years.  He has it boarded up, and for safety's sake I'm sure.  Yes, it is a no trespassing zone.  And, it was unsafe the last time I was in it in 1989, so I'm sure it is downright dangerous now.

I live on octogon house rd. my father was raised in the same house i live in. The place is haunted! My boyfriend and i went in with our video cam as we're ghost hunters in our spare time. I got a little too freaked out in the first 3 minutes so we left. And indeed in that little amount of time we caught something! Its a moaning and we think its a female, but its hard to really tell the sex. Its pretty freaky..but true!

Your commeMy name is Savannah, and my family and I own this house, and none of you should be on the property without contacting us and asking permission beforehand. The house is old, and very dangerous, common sense should tell you that. Being so uptight about visitors is just a precaution to keep the house safe and the people who want to visit it. Know however that if we catch you or have evidence of you being on the property without our permission, that we will not hesitate to charge you with trespassing. We just can't trust people who go in without our knowledge of it. We love to have visitors, we would be glad to show anyone around! We have a lot of visitors contact us and set up a date to come by so we can give them a tour. It's just a nuisance when people go without permission because it's dangerous for them, for the house, and illegal. We also have a huge problem with thefts, and it's very disheartening that people would do that. I would hope that none of you are guilty of that, and that's they only reason why we have to know your coming before you even set foot on the property. If you ever want to visit, just make sure you contact us first, it's in your best interest and ours as well. My name is Savannah Orr, and I am the owner's daughter, thus, you can contact me by email: savannah.brooke.orr2016@gmail.com or you can shoot me a message on Facebook, I am always available and will get back to you asap. I would be happy to help answer any questions that you have :) And yes, we are working on restoring it, but it won't be a quick process. We are working closely with Virginia Tech, and we have a lot laid out on the table for the house's future. If you want to know more about the status of the house, feel free to ask.

I first went in that house with my Grandmother to visit some relatives.
That was in 1942 when I was five years old. The house was partitioned off
into several apartments. The next time I was in the house I was about twelve
and went with some friends. The house was in bad condition, but I recall
seeing a beautiful design on the ceiling in the great room and I think the dark
room that was mentioned in some of the posts,as being just behind the kitchen.
One other time I went by there while walking home from  Adwolfe school
and it was being used as a tobacco barn. After that I moved to Norfolk,Va.

This house is boarded up now but the society that owns it, is beginning a major restoration of the property. It will be a public attraction some day.
