Old House Woods
Mathews, VA 23109

County: Mathews
WebSite: None

The owner of the 'house in the woods' contacted the site and requested that people leave it alone. There is nothing paranormal there, but people ARE causing damage to it. Hes not a jerk, or an ass... he is simply the owner of a property and wishes that it would be left alone... RESPECT THAT.

This is not right, and I am frankly disgusted that people are wrecking locations listed on this site. If you see this house in the woods, just keep walking... Don't go in it and don't mess with it. If a place is boarded up, don't pull down the boards, don't break in.

These stories have been passed down for a good 200 years. These instances have been recognized as the most bizarre psychic phenomena ever recorded. Anywhere from swash buckling pirates burring stolen gold; A ghost ship hovering over the woods; British soldiers hiding colonial treasure during the revolutionary war; A full Spanish galleon which vanishes in thin air; Skeletons in knight’s armor wielding threatening swords; Mysterious groups of shovelers digging furiously late at night; to ghost horses and cows appearing and disappearing before your eyes. All of these and more have been seen at different times of the year. There has also been a rumor going around of a witch that lets off a green light flying through the trees. February 2004 addition: 4 Eyewitnesses have vowed never to return to this area of land. The woods got their name from an old house that was in the center of them. The story behind the house is unknow at this time. The house caught on fire and then put its self out. Then a few years later it caught fire again and burned to the foundation. There is one spirit that comes up out of the water and walks along the beach towards the road. At first glance it is a rather grey glowing figure dressed in worn pirate style clothing if you are able to catch the face it is that of a skeleton. The Spanish Galleon that comes in from the water hovering over the beach and then above the woods. If you are on the beach and face the woods you can see the grove in the tree line as to where the ship docks. You can watch the ship hover there above the trees and watch as figures of men get off the ship. The whole wooded area lights up and you can hear digging and clanking of shovels.. There are 2 black headless dogs that will come out of the woods and chase you. As well as jump onto your vehicle or in the bed of your truck. The green light is truly astonishing. It is more like a ball of light. That is so intense it lights up everything it flashes 3 times for brief periods of time. but doesn't distort your night vision when it passes.. Usually when you see that light it is time to go. You have worn out your welcome on the beach. If you remain things will start to attack your vehicle. There are also accounts of people vanishing in those woods. They say that if you get too close to the treasure you never return. Various people over the years have gone in searching and never made it back.

We went this weekend and only had one experience. When we were walking down Old House Woods Rd. It sounded like something was walking in the woods next to us and stopped when we did. There is an old house that we found on the outskirts of the woods that was boarded up. We went in and walked around, one the bottom floor in the back room we heard what sounded like breathing and somthing trying to move the shelf thats in the room. all in all an ok place to investigate.

I came upon this place while searching the web for real haunted places in Virginia. After researching about the Old House Woods and the area in which they are located I decided to take a trip with my girlfriend and sister to check it out. After a long drive (about 4 hours) after dark we arrived at Old House Woods. I drove the car on the dirt road that goes through the woods at a speed of about mph while observing my surroundings for any supernatural activities. After driving back through woods I drove around the woods on the dirt road that goes around and nothing really happened. After returning to the main entry to the Old House we parked the car and took a walk through the woods on the dirt road. While a little ways in to the woods I began to hear noises that seemed like footsteps. Every time we stopped the noise stopped so that freaked my out. Of course flashing into the woods with the flashlight didn't do a thing. But after a couple of minutes I really began to feel uncomfortable and so both of us dashed out towards the car. I must add that upon exiting the vehicle I heard cow bells and there was no wind at all. So wind chimes that hung on the porch of nearby house are out of the question. The cow bell sound was really close if not a couple of yards away from the car. That was all that I experienced. Although we didn't stay there that long. Feeling uncomfortable was enough.

To those who would like to check this place out I would say sure go ahead and get a scare but I wouldn't spend too much time there because that place didn't feel peaceful at all.

I have lived in mathews for 20 years...since i was born and have been to old house woods more times then i can count. Anyone who doesnt believe that the place is haunted is just stupid. my family has resided in Diggs for about a hundred years if any of you know the sadlers or grinnells well thats my family. I have see my fair share of weird stuff down there. whether anything there is evil or not i dont know. I do know that something down there does not like people comming and bothering it. The old house on the side of the road going to the beach is not the old house of old house woods, that house has been gone for many years. Oh and as for the winged demon that was in the news paper a while back think about it we are in the woods turkey live in the woods i have seen them fly off. They have scared the ever living hell out of me but it was just a turkey. So anyone who wants to go there, should there is nothing there that will hurt you just watch and observe you.

I strongly caution you about this site. It is not something to be toyed with. I have been there several times and each time something negative occured. The last time I went me and one of the members of my party were physically attacked by an unseen force. Be very careful in this place--it is no joke...this is for real and it is malevolent.

It's woods that are right next to a beach...the beach is partly haunted too...or so i hear it is...I live in Mathews and I've never been at night. I've only been once during the day.

I went there several times myself, day and night. i never saw anything or heard anything out of the ordinary. Yes, there is a old house that was burned to the ground, thought to done by a greedy grandson after his grandmother died (he wanted the land...not the house). We used video equiptment during all visits, we recorded multiple 'things flying around' just like those other people did. Too bad...it was just cigarette smoke in front of the lens at night. The pond has very little life, mostly due to the Hydrogen Sulfide(rotten eggs smell). A look into the history books reveals a nice correlation between the humid seasons and sightings. I will pose one theory; rye bread that is stored in peoples homes will grow mold (ergot) after a small period of time, a small dose of ergot is a powerful hallucinogenic drug. Long-term, low-level exposure of Hydrogen Sulfide may result in fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, irritability, poor memory, and dizziness. Couple these two together and you have a mix just right for some scary observations.

I grew up in the area and have driven by it several times but always during the day. As a local I was always told by the adults not to venture into the Old House Woods, but as a college student I really wanted to. I brought some friends back to Tidewater Va to show them around. One of my friends asked if I knew of any haunted places and so I took them here. Upon entering the woods I noticed an immediate drop in temperature. After an hour of trampling around we decided to head back to the car. As we made our approach we heard someone trampling through the woods. Up ahead a figure started to appear walking toward us, as it came near we realized it wasn't on the ground but about a foot over. It was a man it military regalia, 18th Century British, who looked lost, he walked right between us. One of my friends began to cry he was scared so badly, I myself was truly believing what I had just seen. The Middle Peninsula is a haunted place steeped in a rich history.

I live in Mathews and have been fascinated with the story surrounding the woods. I walked through them one night at about nine or ten o'clock and stayed inside for about 30 mins. Obviously when you're walking around alone in the dark with only a flashlight amongst trees that ares suppose to be haunted, you experience a sense of uneasiness but that was all. I saw and heard nothing. If any of you saw any mysterious lights on that night, it was just me and my flashlight. Sorry.

The green light is a channel marker, and the white lattern light is simply a commercial airliner close to the horizon, which may, or may not, pass overhead. You can listen on shorwave to the FAA controller - cockpit crew. You are able to see these lights from your auto on the road because the loblolly pines grow quite tall and the mature pines have no lower branches; consequently, you can see through the stands of trees and halfway or more across the Chesapeake Bay. Never been any ghosts, but there are several family cemetaries and at night, fast moving deer that are dangerous to a pedestrian.

well when channel markers start floating ON land and in the sky then I will believe you. But seeing as how we were parked on the beach facing the woods and not looking over the water and the light was IN FRONT of our Truck and not behind us and the LIGHT was so bright that it lit everything up like it was the middle of the DAY which I don't think a Channel Marker could do that and I don't ever remember a need for them in the middle of a road before. These weren't lights from a plane they appeared just above the windshield of the truck and lowered with each flash they never moved forward of back they stayed in the same spot they just got closer to the ground after each flash. They were ball like and roughly the size of a basketball. The light from it was so intense you could see through your eyelids.

Yes I am 1 of the 4 that will NEVER return to the beach or woods in that area. I have seen more then my share of the supernatural over the past 20 years that I have lived in this area. The owners don't want you down there because it is private property but the truth is that there is something that is attracting the unrest in that area it isn't just the woods. it is the whole area approaching the woods and well up the road that leads you in and out of the area.

I have a house down there on the bay, on the mainland close to the bridge.... When me and my brother were little we NEVER went outside at night. Its just one of those feelings you get that something is wrong, someone is hurt, or its just not right!... We would fish at night to catch the HUGE spot and croaker that come through... but we would never leave the pier, and I would never try to look anywhere but across the water.... looking back at the house was scary and the swamp we lived next to was just exhaustingly spooky.... s.pillow@yahoo.com all memorys aside, I would LOVE to go find the old house.... and I would love to have someone come see the Richmond Train tunnel with me and my partner.... weve been a few times but never saw a thing!!...

i have a place on gwynns island and last night a friend of mine who has lived in mathews almost all of his life told me about this stor. so i said let go take a look when the sun gose down. so we made the ten minunt ride over there and when we got there it smelled like eggs and the tempurature droped dramatically. so we head down to the public beach on the outside of old house woods and nothing happened so when we got to the beach we sat for a minut then turned back around on our way back old house woods is on the passenger side of the car were i was sitting. my windo was down and i heard a faint bark (like from a dog) asnd the two that were in the car with me didnt here it but then my friend said look and this headless dog comes out of the woods barking at us andjumps at my window like we were not welcome there. so when the dog jumped my friend stoped on the gas pedaland then the dog vanished. so the4n we come up to old house woods road and we park the car. we take a picture of the sign and when we took it nothing was around it it was dark and all you couls see was the sign. but nthen when we looked at the picture on the camera there was a red orb and a green orb underneeth the sign with a little figure underneth them. so we zoomed onto the figure on the camera and when we did it was a little figure that had arms and a head and eyes. it scared my friend so bad so that was my experiance mabie next time i will go down the road instead of being on the outside of the woods.

I have a group from the University of Richmond that might be interested in making a trip out to Old House Woods. Could anyone e-mail me and tell me if there are special permissions I should get, and the best way to get there from Richmond? :]

My dad's old boss used to have a house out in Matthews and I'd heard the stories about how haunted Matthew's was; needless to say, I'm more than a little excited to get out there and look around myself.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Treasures of Old House Woods. Legend tell that the heavily forested Old House Woods, often referred to as Haunted Woods or the Black Forest by hunters, is the hiding place of several lost treasures worth millions of dollars. Old House Woods is a 50-acre patch of pine woods and marshlands on the east side of the tiny crossroads of Diggs in Mathews County northeast of Gloucester separated from the Chesapeake Bay by Whites Creek. The area was originally called Werowocomico by the Chiskiake Indians, and later Piankatank, bordered on the north by the Piankatank River, and was home to bustling seaports from the pre-Revolutionary through the Civil War era. There have been an extremely high number of reports of paranormal activity around Old House Woods and the surrounding creek waters, said to be one of the most haunted places in Virginia, with ghostly figures of ships, pirates, cavaliers, and witches, noises, and assaults on persons and vehicles, with the wind howling, trees bending and creaking, and the forest being very dark at night as the trees are so thick they virtually obscure any visible moon or stars. According to one of the treasure tales, a band of pirates buried their treasure in the woods on the banks of Whites Creek, and set out to acquire more, but were killed in a storm before they could ever retrieve it. It is thought that perhaps theirs is the phantom ship that is reputedly seen both hovering above the woods and in Whites Creek. Another well-known treasure story relating to the area tells of chests of treasure being sent to Jamestown from England by Charles II following the Battle of Worcester in 1651 in case he had to flee the country and go into exile. Due to stormy weather, the crew mistakenly went up the wrong creek and ended up instead at Whites Creek where they were attacked by bandits while unloading the chests. The robbers got away with some of the treasure, and the remainder was said to have been buried by the crew in the woods who planned to return for it, but their ship capsized in the storm and they were all lost. The advance party upon returning to report to the King what happened were put to death. Many have reported seeing in the woods ghost diggers with their lanterns ablaze at night in the vicinity, and attribute this to the story of the lost English treasure. Yet a third treasure story dates to later following the Revolutionary War in 1781 when a large cache of patriot plunder consisting of gold and silver coins, jewelry, and other valuables was buried in four large cannons at a graveyard near the mouth of Whites Creek in the Haunted Woods by soldiers under British General Cornwallis. This may be true as there is at least one old cemetery nearby, and Cornwallis likely passed through the vicinity on his flight from Greensboro to Wilmington, N.C., and to Yorktown, Virginia. Cornwallis and his men surrendered later that year with only 2,000 silver coins in a trunk found in their possession, and were held as prisoners until a prisoner exchange could be worked out. They were never permitted to return to reclaim any treasure. The area is named after an old house that was once located in the center of these haunted woods. It apparently caught fire once and put itself out, and then caught fire again later and burned to the ground. If you follow Old House Woods Road, or Rt. 704, going east, the road starts out paved with homes, and appears to end at the woods, but a dirt road continues into the woods all the way to Whites Creek, and this is still part of Old House Woods Road, riddled with potholes at last report.

Not to be rude but, the house just might have to do with the haunting even though it is no longer standing.  The place was named after the house, so it has to include the house.

I was a complete non-beliver in ghosts and the like. But changed my mind after a 2007 visit to old house woods. I didn't disturb or distroy anything but simply walked. I was one person before i went there. And a completely different person once I left. With all the may said "haunted" places i've visited this is the only one where seeing and believing changed for me. I will NEVER be the same. I want to go back. But it is going to take all the will I can muster to do it.

I live in Old House Woods...since 1989...sites like this one cause people to drive or walk down my driveway in the middle of the night, causing much anxiety and loss of sleep..there is nothing haunted, or even remotely interesting, about  OHW...you need to respect private property...how would you like it if I decided to trespass on your property just because I read or heard somewhere that your property was"haunted"?...you know the answer as well as I do.

From the Paranormal Investigation Team of Tidewater website:

Mathews - Old House Woods - These stories have been passed down for a good 200 years. These instances have been recognized as the most bizarre psychic phenomena ever recorded. Anywhere from swash buckling pirates burring stolen gold; A ghost ship hovering over the woods; British soldiers hiding colonial treasure during the revolutionary war; A full Spanish galleon which vanishes in thin air;

Skeletons in knight’s armor wielding threatening swords; Mysterious groups of shovelers digging furiously late at night; to ghost horses and cows appearing and disappearing before your eyes. All of these and more have been seen at different times of the year. There has also been a rumor going around of a witch that lets off a green light flying through the trees. - February 2004 addition: 4 Eye-witnesses have vowed never to return to this area of land. The woods got their name from an old house that was in the center of them. The story behind the house is unknown at this time.

"...but I had a really interesting reason for being on the property" is not a defense to a criminal trespassing charge...it is essentially un-American to think that private property ownership rights should give way to the whim of any individual who wants to roam around on my property in the middle of the night, merely becuase he has heard reports, reliable or unreliable, that the property is "haunted"...grow up!

The entire length of the road is not much more than a 1/2 mile - if that. I've been down there in broad daylight taking a few digital shots along the road. Not a single one of the photos were usable , It is an oppressive place till you get to the end of the road. There a couple of nice houses down there and I'm sure the owners aren't too thrilled with people driving by all hours of the night. I wouldn't be too happy about that myself.

Anybody who has lived in Mathews County, for any length of time, is well aware of the stories about Old House Woods. They've been told for a couple hundred years ... making it a pretty long tale of a haunting

A few years back my friend and I went there and parked my car on the beach. We shut off the engine, rolled down our windows and just waited. We talked for a while and at first the only thing we ever heard were dogs barking. Which is you know, is a indicator to leave...now. But we waited it out. From where we were parked we could see the rocks on the beach. All of a sudden, a light appeared on the walks and began moving down the beach and into the field directly in front of the car. It was just a round light and it was sort of dancing along the fields. We were in awe of this light. I've been doing paranormal research for many years and the first rule of thumb is to always check your engine. I've been in too many situations where my car wouldn't start. So I started my vehicle (which cut on thankfully), but my headlights turned on as well. The light stopped, it appeared to be turning towards us and then starting zooming in on us, faster than a human would. We didn't stay to see what it would do. We figured we had worn out our welcome that time and left. It was a pretty stimulating experience though

I live in Williamsburg and grew up going ghost hunting down at the public beach which is where old house woods is. Its easy to get to just follow the public beach signs once your in Matthews. I can tell you from at least 30 or more visits I haven't seen anything happen there. We have driven old house woods road , back to where the foundation of the old house is. It is very creepy at night and the old cow hole as its called is eerie but thats because it stinks from the marshes. This place is dark and can be scary at night for sure. Just keep in mind though that your mind will play tricks on you in the dark and I dont know about all these stories from previous posters being true or just internet trolling for kicks. As for the private property thing , respect her wishes and stay off her land. Mathews is a small town and I'm sure if the police got called I wouldn't want to be in your shoes waking up a local sheriff or dep there in that small town. Seriously though don't go down there expecting to see much but darkness and bugs and then you won't be disappointed in the end as we were many many times.

I have lived right down the street from old house woods for 22+ years, and have walked the woods countless times at night. Let me tell you that it is indeed haunted. Many might not know that there is a nature trail through the woods with benches, small bridges, and red arrows to point the way...however Hurricane Isabel and time has taken some of that down. The orignial picture of Old House itself is in Virginia Ghosts by Marguerite Dupont Lee. It had dormer windows, and I believe the old Magnolia tree along one of the private lanes is the tree in the picture. The house along the driveway to the public beach and the one on L.B. Taylor Jr.s book are not the original house. Places where you might see/hear activity in the woods: Right where the private/public dirt lanes intersect with the paved road at the corner, near intersection where first private lane is on the left. Ive had friends play a Ouja boark on Halloween in those woods and swear the planchette moved on its own, however I did not take part in this and stood off to the side.

Three of us went there last night. The house is in fact still standing and in terrible shape. It is defiantly dangerous to go inside.

While we were there the house groaned as two of us climbed into the house. Shortly following we heard a grinding noise. We entered through the far right window. This was most likely a living room of some kind- once two of us were fully inside the building we heard the groan again (it sounded like very bad indigestion, but of a giant) and again the grinding noise followed only this time it was louder. (The grinding noise reminded us of a chair being slid across a slate floor).

We all moved out of the house- I was leaning against the window and I felt the entire building shake. Not a vibration a shake- as if an earth quake was happening.

We ran down the road to where our car was parked and we didn't stop running until all 4 of us we in the car.

After determining it couldn't be anything paranormal-  we decided to go back to the house- this time with the safety of our car about 50 feet away.

We decided it would be best if two of us stood watch outside while the other two went inside to investigate.

Two of us went inside. I saw a pair of yellow eyes looking out the far left window- as if it was trying not to be seen.

The other two - entered again through the bottom right window. They made there way through the narrow hallway and around into what was more then likely a kitchen at some point.

For those of you who don't know the floor is mostly gone in the house and it is dangerous to walk around in the house if you have never been there before.

The two inside the house went towards the stair way- which is blocked by a mostly broken door- when you attempt to venture up the stairs you will find that it is very narrow and many of the steps are broken.

One of the two inside the house took on step on to the first step of the stair way. They heared the groan again. (We could not hear the groan from the outside).

From the outside we saw one of the flash lights jerk and then we heard and saw the entire house shake and grind.

The two inside the house came barreling out and into the car. We have determined that there was nothing human inside the house.

If you do decide to go be careful. Go with someone who has already been inside. You can no longer enter through the back door.
Do not break any part of the house. Even though it looks like trash, it is someones property and if something paranormal does live there you don't want to upset it more then it already is.
Also remember- if you get the feeling that it is time to go- it is time to go.

The house is definatly not still standing. Been gone for years. haunted there? yes. House there? No.  Born and raised here, been there many times, creepy stuff everytime, but house is long gone. House most people mess with is the wrong house, good way to get in serious trouble. Used to racoon hunt alot( at night with dogs). Dogs would not hunt this woods, would always come rushing back to the truck, which never ever happened anywhere else. Redneck stuff i know, but just my 2cents.

"the house"?...the house on the beach road is not the "house" of "Old House Woods"...nor is the house "haunted" in any sense of the word...nice of you to recognize that the house you are talking about is private property, while at the same time encouraging others like you to trespass...pathetic!

Well now............
Posted at ghostvillage.com under old house woods..........
I grew up in Mathews, I'm 33 now and live in Kansas due to being military. I have heard all the rumors about old house woods, but I can validate one for sure. When I was a child, I beleive I was about 12, I had never heard any of the ghost stories so my mind wasnt poisoned to see a shadow and think it was a ghost of "Old House Woods". I was with my parents one night during the summer and they went to a house just on the other side of the woods, behind what the locals call "shagtail", to check on an elderly couple that my mother took care of. Both of my parents went into the house and I waited in the car. I was there for about 15 minutes when off to the right, in the area of the infamous woods, I vividly saw an old ship coming in from the chesapeake bay, but it was floating probably 50 feet over the water. The ship floated over the shagtail, which is eroded away now, and up on the beach. It came to a stop between the shore and the woodline. I wasnt quite close enough to see such things like the boarding ladder or sailors, but I could accurately describe what I saw with great detail. It was wood, had 3 masts, and it was big. There were 2 short masts and one tall mast. I saw alot of ropes but no sails were up. It brought a fog with it and seemed colorless, sort of gray. It scared me enough that I locked the car doors and just watched it in disbelief. After a short time, I dont remember how long, maybe 5-10 minutes, the fog grew thicker and the ship just seemed to fade away. I was scared to death but I just cant explain why I didnt run into the house with my parents. A few minutes after the ship was gone my parents came out to the car. I told them in detail what I saw but they just blew it off as me just being a scared of the dark kid. I talked about the sighting for years and eventually they started to beleive that they may have been something to it since it made such an impact on me. I eventually heard about "Old House Woods" but not till quite some time after seeing the ship for myself. I would never be caught near that area after dark again, even to this day. Some years later, I think I was about 16, my mother showed me a book of haunted areas in Mathews. She pointed me to a page that spoke of Old House Woods and had a witness description of an old ship. The ship in the book was described in detail exactly how I described it to her. She said when she read it and saw the description that matched exactly what I told her about for years she had a whole new look on the paranormal and Old House Woods. This is 100% true, I have no reason to make it up. But I wanted to let others know that there are witnesses to the happenings in the woods, however I'm sure that many of the stories are untrue. Granted I dont remember the details as I did when I was younger, I still remember the basic desciption that I wrote in here. If anyone is going out there to check it out and wants more info feel free to contact me. It's been a long time but I will give you any help I can. I do remember right where I saw the ship but the area has eroded so much since then.

I grew up in Mathews and decided to go down there one night with some friends. It was a Sunday night. Upon entering the area, a black cat dashed in front of our vehicle and a large black spider landed on our windshield. We drove into the woods and parked right in front of where the old house used to be. We shut off the engine and sat very quietly. The air grew very chilly (it was supposed to be a hot summer night) and the windows started to fog up. We could hear the sound of what appeared to be a creaking ship. At this point, we decided to leave and thank goodness, the engine started back up. As we were leaving the area, the same black cat that we had seen earlier crossed the road in front of us and we had to slam on the brakes just to avoid it. But all of these events are minimal compared to what we saw next. As we got back onto the paved road and thought we were in the clear, we approached what appeared to be a dead animal in the middle of the road right on the median line. However, as we got closer the supposed animal did not look like an animal at all. It looked like (and I could not make this up if I tried) a chopped off head of a man. It's hair appeared to be brown and its face was a ghostly white. The tongue also appeared to be protruding from its mouth and the eyes were closed. It was laying on its side and you could see approx. the top half of its neck with a grisly appearance at the bottom (as if someone had been hacking and sawing into it). We circled and drove past this thing about 3x, however, we were all too scared to get out and look at it. I wish I had a camera because I would've taken a picture of the thing. It was the creepiest and most disgusting thing I have ever seen in my entire life. All three of us saw it and I am now a permanent believer in the tales from Old House Woods. Something is definitely sinister with the place and just the whole area in general. I could not sleep that night and had an uneasy and dreadful feeling all night. It will be awhile before I ever go back there again!

what an obvious crock!...you "could not have possibly made up" seeing a disembodied head in the middle of the road?...yeah, that's just too "original" for it not to be a lie...and I'm sure you and your companions, fine citizens all, went right to the sheriff's office and reported what you supposedly had seen?...I thought so.

well, you can believe what you want but I know what I saw. and my friends know what they say, we're still talking about it to this day. as far as going to the sheriff's office? at 2 AM in the morning, they would've laughed us right out of the building thinking we were obviously inebriated. ive never been a firm believer in paranormal activity or ghosts, but this whole experience has really started to change my beliefs and I don't care what your opinion or anyone else's opinion is. still doesn't change the facts about what happened.

As I stated in an above post that I have lived 22+ years near the area.  The "Old House" no longer stands, the picture on nearly every ghost book of the supposed house is wrong, and the house along the gravel road on the right is someones private home...or used to be.
The only authentic picture is on page 82 if you scroll down on the site.  It is from Marguerite du Pont Lee's Virginia Ghosts book, which is hard to locate.

This is the real photo:  http://books.google.com/books?id=oFJgEIqheBQC&pg=PA83-IA3&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=4#v=onepage&q&f=false

I've lived at the end of Old House Woods for 49 years and have NEVER heard or seen anything unusual........except the "thrill seekers" who've driven onto my property at all hours of the night.  I've cleaned up too much debris that was left behind and heard way too much noise from individuals "looking" for ghosts.  Over the years, several fires have had to been extinguished by the fire deprtment because the thrill seekers wanted a campfire (on private property) only to leave it active.  I appreciate the thought of some excitement, but trust me.....THERE'S NOTHING DOWN HERE.

My family is from Mathews the Onemo area to be exact,as a child we would go every weekend to visit my grandmother, one night my Dad decided to take us down to Bethel beach to watch a meteor shower...while out on the beach playing in the sand I was about 8 or 9 I remember seeing a large ship it looked liked a Spanish Galleon..it was beautiful..it had come from the direction of Old House Woods down passing by Bethel Beach and headed out to toward bay.It did not appear to be ghostly or misty looking and it was not floating above the water it was just as solid as could be.The strange thing similiar to comment #65430,I dont recall saying anything to my sister or Dad when it was passing??? or them saying anything about it?? It didnt scare me I was more in awe of how beautiful it was and wondering where it was going. As I got older I always thought it was a replica ship..I had not heard about the Old House Woods until a few years ago..thats when I starting thinking maybe that was the ship others claim to have seen.

Old House Woods is not only one of the most prominent sites for ghosts in Virginia, but there is supposedly 3 separate buried treasures in the woods. I used to do amateur ghost hunting and am now more interested in treasure hunting. Old House Woods is the perfect combination of both. How cool would it be to find some old relics or treasures AND get documentation of paranormal activity?! Even if there is nothing to be found from a monetary standpoint or no hauntings I think it is at least worth a short trip from Richmond. I am not looking to disturb the folks that live at the end of the road and definitely wouldn't do anything to defame the area. But it seems like an exciting free (or free-ish) journey.

My husband and I are looking for some people to check out OHW with. We have bee there before and have caught some nice footage. Our last crew members failed to show, and have proven to be very unprofessional. We are looking for serious people who won't drink or trash the place while we are there. We would love to provide snacks and drinks (non alcoholic). Please look me up on facebook and let me know if you're interested.

i was stationed in VA for about 8 years and visited this place many times with my experiences being eventful every time. the area that i have found to be the most active is the part by the beach there. befor i really went exploring there i did a lot of meditating and becoming familair with the "inhabitants" of the woods. after doing that i found it a lot easier to get in and out of the woods. some of the things i have seen there are truly mind blowing, such as an old station wagon showing up there while my group and i where deeper in the woods and on our way out appeared, i have never seen it before nor since. the plant life changing, such as a path we just came from being over grown when we would try to go back. these are some of the minor this i have seen. i would love to go back but I'm now back home in Texas, but if anyone wants to talk about it or if you know about any places down here in the Houston area e-mail me at jason.hoberg@hotmail.com.

This is Kevin.  You can find us on the Facebook Old House Woods group.

Let's lay down some facts.

1.  The old house on Haven Beach Road is not THE old house.  The old house is long gone.

2.  My people only hunt on public property, so while I can appreciate property owners' concerns, you may have to figure out some way to plant some trees or shrubs to help block headlights.  Nobody will be telling us not to hunt, while abiding by all laws, on public property.  I do hope you live peacefully; the people I come with will not disturb that, but we cannot drive or ride in the dark to find out stake-out spots, so headlights will be an ongoing issue.

3.  Of the 1,000 hours or so I've been down there, I've seen relatively little.  I saw the Storm Lady on night during a lightning storm.  She was "inimpressive" in most regards; just looked like a person standing on the beach, 30 yards away from us or so.  No glowing, no moving, no hair blowing in the breeze.  She was actually there for a half an hour (15 mins, then disappeared, then we got in the car because rain came, came back out to hunt after, and she returned for about 15 more minutes).  We saw two dark, hooded, strange looking creatures, like a dark poncho draped over a broom stick in shape, run across the road and up two trees, then jump toward each other and disappear into a dark most that actually blocked stars from our view.  Those two were the biggest sightings.  Common for me after that; seeing naked-eye orbs, hearing wagon wheels turn, horse clomps, boots walking, children playing, people talking, strange yells from a distance, and odd light displays, like sparks from a lighter or little explosions, maybe like musket fire (w/o sound).  Most nights, you get nothing.  It's the hardest type of hunting there is with the most amount of patience required.  We are making a 2-hour documentary on the area, but we want to be so filthy-familiar with the place that we could tell you every normal sound, smell, and sight so we can answer any questions first.  We're just about there.

4.  You're going to be disappointed if you expect Hollywood-type action out here.  My heart rate goes up a few beats about 1 in 10 visits.

5.  The draw of the place for us is manyfold, really; it's home, it's real history documented in real books (before it was so easy to get a book published), these are people who have stories that know they'd be labeled insane/unstable, yet they came forth.  That much courage is worth some of my hobby time to help them prove it true.

6.  We have massive volumes of intelligent EVP's captured from the area, including one that distinctly says, "I eat the children.  Join me."

7.  I STILL will not say that I believe in ghosts, or even that I know what ghosts are.  All I know is what I see, smell, and hear.  As for the seeing and hearing, my goal is to get those data into a growing pool of evidence to try to define what is going on in this place.

8.  As for the person who just warned people not to hunt in 2013, let me think how I can best phrase this: bwahahahahaha!  Alrighty, then!  (You realize you just doubled the volume of people that will be coming there, right?).

Thanks.  Peace.

From my google searching, it's hard to tell what is and is not private property in the Old House Woods area.  I don't want to disturb anyone or trespass, does anyone know what areas are public in the woods?

I have read that none of the woods is public, only the beach is public.  And that it's just the house (the wrong house that's on the other road) is what is off limits.

only the public beach is open to the general public...the public beach extends several hundred yards both north and south from the parking lot...the beach in front of the private homes is NOT open to the public...none of the woods is open to the public...please respect private property.

With all due respect, you are probably the same person from NJ that posted to for nobody to go to Old House Woods in 2013 previously.  So where you say public property is doesn't hold much weight, since you are clearly hoping to stop visits anyway.

I'm truely not looking to trespass, but I'm also not driving 4 hours to go on a public beach.  So I need to be certain that it will be worth the drive, or if I need to find an alternative.

I have lived in Old House Woods for almost 25 years. I am not from New Jersey. Just stay off my property and we'll both be fine.

To the last guy, I've been up there twice. The woods are pretty dense with prickly bushes etc. You would almost need a tree cutter. It all depends where you go in. There are houses nearby the beach and they have no trespassing or private property signs. Most of the activity I've heard takes place on the road, near the ponds and on the beach anyway. Last time I drove 3 hours out, it was worth it, because at 10 pm we heard some really fast talking that would come from different directions. It may have been because I lit a dragons blood incense stick (usually used to remove spirits from locations) When I got home, I slowed the audio and I could make out things pretty clearly. I'll post those back here. I want to get more convincing stuff before I posted though. Remember, just don't ruin it for everyone by doing something stupid.

Me and my 4 friends had a scary experience there about 4 years ago. We were 13 and we took 2 four wheelers into his woods which we knew were close to the old house. We were just riding in the woods when we stopped at an opening of trees in the woods. We got off the ATVs to just explore as we thought this was unusual. All I can remember after getting off was a very great drop in temperature. It was a sunny summer day. Next came the clouds.. It got almost so dark that it looked as if the sun was setting and next.. Possibly the scariest was the wind. It was almost unbearable leaves were ripping off the trees and some trees were falling around us... We were very quick to leave and once we got back his mom told us that she had an experience in the same place we were that she wouldn't even tell us I have not gone back since but kinda do want to see the ship

I feel sorry for the folks who live on this road or any of the properties and have to deal with people poking around in their neighborhood.  I know if it was MY property and people came looking for ghosts I would take great joy in making sure they were not disappointed  (anybody ever think that maybe some of the locals have already thought of this and might explain some of the experiences being shared?).  I've stayed in Mathews County overnight several times, not in Old Woods but near it on Sand Bank RD in the campground and I've sat in my boat off the supposed "haunted" beach and never seen anything that wasn't supposed to be there.  Scariest things I've seen during any of my stays was some of the other campers.  LOL.  Green flashing lights?? Marker buoys, there's lots of green ones, a few red, some white.  Not saying I don't believe in ghosts, but I think people who open their minds and actively look for something will consciously or subconsciously find what they are looking for, whether it's real or not.

i really want to get permission to look around here, just me and one of my friends. i don't see the harm in us parking at the beach and walking through the woods for a few hours, leaving the families and there homes alone. i see the owner of the property has commented a few times on here, if you could get back to me on here that would be awesome

Permission denied....would you grant permission to people you don't know to roam around on your property in the middle of the night?...I doubt it.

I don't get why some people insist on trespassing. Don't see what harm it can do? It's illegal, and the property owner has the frustration of having to worry about people doing stupid stuff on their property. You can be respectful? No you can't if you keep asking to trespass or just going ahead and doing so.
You probably wouldn't appreciate it if random strangers decided it was ok to keep coming into your yard at all hours of the night, why should other people be ok with it when you decide to do so? These folks just want their properties left alone.

Yeah, right..."seen" by whom?...were the incidents reported to the local sheriff?...when the dogs were "attacked" were they treated by a vet?...these are the types of questions that a credible report would answer.

I have been to Haven Beach about 50 times nothing suspicious or supernatural there, some of my family members have been in Old House woods a long time ago and have seen the "storm lady", a ghost ship, and heard chains rattling. But with personal experiences on the beach, nothing unusual
