Description:
It is hidden off to the right hand side of the Redmond Duval Road. (20 miles East of Seattle.) It has about 35 grave sights and strange, unexplained things happen there. People have seen women and children, dressed in old, raggedy looking close, wondering around the gravesites. Witnesses have also felt physical things like being hit.February 2005 additional information: There used to be a staircase that began at ground level and descended 13 steps below ground. I believe the legend/story was that it was a belowgrade entrance to the opulent tomb of a locally wealthy family. In any case, kids used to get drunk near or in the cemetery and would walk down these steps late at night. It is unsure whether there were doors or simply a dirt wall at the bottom of these steps. Regardless, once you reached the bottom of the stairs and turned around you supposedly no longer saw the cemetery but a vision of Hell. The similarity in this story to yours is that this vision drove the subject to insanity. Anyone watching the subject walk down the stairs witnessed them stop, turn, and fall dumbfounded to their knees. I’ve heard that several children emerged nearly comatose from the steps – many of them never uttered another word. the story goes that these steps were bulldozed over (depending on the age of the storyteller, the bulldozing occurred anywhere from 1992 to the early 1960’s) and that the severe NO TRESPASSING limitations were a result of that. Furthermore, There is rumor of illegal late night expeditions – kids with shovels hoping to unearth Maltby’s 13 Steps to Hell. It is suggested independently researching this ‘tale.’ Either way, it’s a great story.

The GPS coordinates for this location are 47° 46′: 39.65″:N, 122° 04′: 33.70″:W. To get there, get onto I——405 and take onramp onto US——2/WA——522 E (exit 23) to Woodinville/Wenatchee.

Stay on that highway, and after about 6 miles, turn right on Paradise Lake Rd, which will be the first traffic light you come to. Then follow Paradise Lake Rd for about 2.5 miles.

On the right hand side, across from a small housing development, there will be a dirt pullout. Park there and go up the path that heads parallel to the road up the hill...if you`re facing away from the road, it`s on the left hand side. Follow that path until you come to a clearing with a big house in it...the cemetery is on the left side of the yard, interspersed with trees and shrubs.

I had fun going there, there is a pentagram on one of the headstones, though we didn`t find any 13 Steps to Hell or anything like that. On the downhill side of the path to the cemetery, there is a car with a tree growing through it! I included a photo. That has to be the creepiest thing I saw there...I have no idea how the car got there, but it`s held up by only the tree.

For some reason, I can't view your pic.'s, and would love to, seeing as how i've never been able to see any. If there's anyway that you can get those to me, i'd greatly appreciate it. After looking at these comments, yours is the ONLY one that I believe, and, again, would REALLY like to check out your pic.'s. Thanks.

The steps are old concrete steps not exactly sure of the location. I haven't been there myself but my sister has. The story around here is that if you walk down the steps you will kill yourself after stepping on the bottom step.

I walked to the cemetery but I took the wrong turn on the trail in front of the house and found a perfectly white and dry pillow in the middle of the muddy trail (it was raining). When I got home I looked at the picture you could clearly see a cross engulfed in flames when you looked at it , but when the pic was taken, nothing was there.

i am now 33 years old and as young child had lived maybe 500 feet down the road from the maltby elementary school on the 90 degree corner.one of the most often traveled roads for us was the lake road and some of the stories that my father would tell me were pretty twisted regarding the cemetary and things he had heard happend in the past one being that graves were often robbed when at some point some special agents had been sent to investagate.the story told to me was they never returned and only the car was found

There are steps they just have been covered with cement. I have been there many times and a lot of crazy stuff has happened. Including being pushed so hard it left marks when no one was behind me. Having friends see a young girl dressed in old rags sitting on a grave stone, Being followed by three cats. I wouldn't recommend people going because there is the risk of going to jail if you get caught. Which we have almost a few times. I live in Monroe which is like 5 mins away from there. I want to go back and take pictures of the car and the grave stones but all my friends are to scared to go back!

Don't be ridiculous!!! It's people like this that will ALWAYS make skeptics scoff at the paranormal!!! I've only heard stories of this cemetery, and have never seen ANY pictures of it, which leads me to believe that it's a myth. I'd LOVE to be proven wrong.

It is a real cemetery. The 13 steps though, as people have written, is nowhere to be found. The path when walking through the woods to the cemetery has "run-off-the-road" cars with trees going through them! It's pretty cool...

If anyone wants to chat about Maltby Cemetery, email me at StevoDjert@hotmail.com. I do not have a car right now (live in Downtown Seattle) but will probably get one in the next couple of months. I too want to uncover the steps one day...

Me and some from friends parked our car next to a muddy trail that led to the cemetary. The car started to do weird things like the locks were opening and closing themselves and moving on its own. As were were walking down the muddy trail we heard a scary sound, almost like a dog growling up in the woods beside us. It was definatley an evil sound that was not normal. We ran back to the car. Too scare to make to the cemetary.

I went up there last night. My friends went to explore but i managed to get to the cemetery, they started to walk deeper into and i heard a dog bark. I freaked out and told them I was out. I ran back to the car and almost ate s*** on  grave. Kinda odd how there is a "new" grave out there and the gravestone is from years back....

also my friends found a 2 year olds grave and a 4 years.

I am very curious about this place, only just heard of it today. I realy want to go, but I dont want to sneak around and be foolish, nor do I want being freaked out in the night with the possiblity of being run off, fined, or jailed to interfer with the real feeling and emotions (if any) to be had in experiencing this historical (infamous) place. If anyone who lives in the area or knows anyone in the area plese repond. I would like to write my own letter of request to enter. wheher it be mail directly to the current owners or in directly, either way. Heck if the owners so wish, they can follow me everywhere and eye ball me the whole time making sure I do no disrecpect. whole thing interests me, the woods for simple love of nature, the history, the myths and stories that made it legendary, the prospect of spirits. paranomrmal activity....in a nut shell I just spent the last four hours reading posts about this cementary on various sites, and now am extreamly interested. So again if anyone lives around there or knows someone who does please respond, so that I might begin this small quest that I have forth on myself. Also on another note, I know I write funny, my job is very peticular on how things get written. So please no jokes.

My friends and I hung out at the Maltby Cemetery back in the early eighties. I remember a large cement block  located in the center of the cemetery which was approximately ten feet long, five feet wide and four feet from the ground. We found the thirteen steps which lead down to a wooden door with a pad lock on it.  We were told it was the maintenance shed. Odd place for a shed, very steep.  There were about twenty five people buried at Maltby at the time. As many times as we had gone there, it always took us forever to find the correct gravel road to the cemetery. In 2002  I  revisited the cemetery for old times sake. I wanted my adult perception of this very scary place. I found the gravel road  overgrown with brush and Ivy. As I walked up the gravel road I felt sick to my stomach and wanted to turn around. I crept on through the dense forest and came to the same clearing, but with a few very large new homes located right on the cemetery where we used play.  This was a shock!  I wander if the people who live in those homes know the history of Maltby cemetery? If you pass the Doolittle residence on your way to the cemetery, you’ve gone to far or maybe it’s the other way around. Good luck and happy hauntings!

My friends and I went to the cemetery over the summer just for kicks. Unfortunately, the scariest part of the experience was when I looked up after hiking along the path for several mintues and saw a person standing off to the side only ten or so feet away from me. It turned out just to be some other kids smoking in the woods, also looking for the infamous Maltby Cemetery. We spent almost an hour exploring the tombs, but nothing significant ever happened. It was creepy because of all the stories we had read, and the fact that it was the middle of the night. But I was more afraid of the people living in the house close by catching us than anything else. I don't think it's any more interesting or haunted than any other cemetery. Sorry : /

Here's one for you.  I know of all of this firsthand.  It is absolutely and completely factual.

During the 1986-1987 school year, students from Redmond High School, drawn by the many crazy local legends, drove out to Maltby Cemetery (during daylight hours) to take photos and gather information for an article for the school's newspaper.  They interviewed a man who lived on adjoining property.  They also took several photos.  One of the photos was of a particular headstone.  This ended up being the photo printed on the front page (it was the lead story) of the Redmond High School newspaper.  The gist of the article was that the many stories concerning the cemetery were nonsense, that there were no "thirteen steps to hell," that it wasn't a Satanic burial site, and so forth.  The article was approved by the journalism class's supervising teacher, Dr. Roger "Doc" Salisbury.  It was printed in the usual monthly edition of the paper, circulated throughout Redmond High School.  Up to that point, everything seemed perfectly normal.

However, within a few days (less than a week, if memory serves), Seattle TV news (KOMO, KING and/or KIRO, though I can't remember whether more than one of them ran the story, or, if not, which ones did--but certainly one of them ran it, because I saw it with my own eyes) ran a story about a report of a grave being robbed at Maltby Cemetary.  The TV segment included video footage of dug up grave.  The remains had been removed.  And here's the kicker: it was THE GRAVE MARKED BY THE VERY HEADSTONE IN THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE RHS STUDENT NEWSPAPER.  As anyone who has been there can confirm, while it isn't a terribly big place, there are a considerable number of headstones and graves in Maltby Cemetery.  The chances of someone randomly robbing the very grave photographed by the RHS students, within a few days of the article being printed, are just too absurd to believe.  So what does it mean?  It probably means that someone who was a Redmond High School student during the 86/87 school year (or maybe one of their friends or family members who saw the newspaper they took home from school) dug up the coffin and absconded with the human remains therein.  But WHY?

These are facts that can all be confirmed.  Step one, check the RHS school newspaper archives for the 86/87 school year.  There were fewer than 10 issues that year, and the Maltby article was the lead story on the front page, so it won't be hard to spot.  Then, check the news archives for KOMO, KIRO and KING, for a period of a week or so following the publication date of the RHS paper containing the Maltby article.  At least one of those stations ran the story.

Happy hunting.

I've been there 2 times. Once last year and the second time yesterday. The first time was pretty scary because my friends and I met some creepy people who were also trying to find the cemetery. The couple didn't have a flashlight and were carrying just a blanket....weird. I didn't see any pentagrams or anything on any of the gravestones. There were some fairly recent graves though. From about 2007. The cemetery is right next to a house. Maybe the caretaker's. You need to be really quiet when hiking up there because of the houses surrounding the trail. Also there are some dogs that live in the houses that will bark if you are too loud. Nothing scary happened to us really. No weird sightings or anything. We also found a tree house there. Also, on the beginning of the trail down a hill there is an old crashed car. That was prob. the scariest thing. I don't know how the car got there or if the person survived. So that was pretty much it. But, two of my friends did recieve a call from the payphone at the gasstation near the cemetery. The call was just like a high pitched screeching. But it was prob just a prank call from one of my friends or something.

We are adult paranormal researchers. We plan on getting a group together within the next couple weeks to visit this cemetary. We invite anyone serious with cameras to come with us.  Please visit our thread on Northwestgreengthumb.org for info in the announcments forums.

Questions for those who have been there.

1. What are best directions into the cemetary with how far and hard a hike in.

2. The house next to it. If we were to as adults knock on door and ask permission to enter the easy way do you think they home owner would let us or would that be a waste of time/

Please visit our site to see and join us.

Thanks

I can tell you my story of the cemetary, as a young boy, had heard many stories of the 13 steps of death from my friends mom. she swore that she saw these steps when she was younger. As explained by many other posts here, were generally the same stories i heard over 25 years ago. including satanic sacrifice of a young woman back in the 60s, at these steps. And as the story goes is why this place has been haunted ever since. I can tell you from personal experience, as i have been there many times, there is a {presence} there. I took over an hour and a half of film footage using night vision cameras, stopping and recording over and over.So when we got home to view the film footage there was nothing on the tape except us in the car, on the way there. and yes i was using the camera correctly, that same night, same camcorder, same tape, same battery was recording fine? I dont know if all the stories are true. but i can tell you this place definately has something eerie about it. I dont scare easy, but every time i've been there i felt a presence. I have never felt this much {activity}if you will, than any place i've ever been......

I was there about 40 years ago with two friends. One of them slipped on a headstone. The headstone had "Baby(his last name)" and nothing else on it. What's really odd is there are no records of anyone with his last name buried there.
