Location Description:

In the small Connecticut town of Newtown lies an enormous field containing more than 100 large abandoned buildings that once housed more than 4000 crazy people. Featured as the location on what is said to be the most scary episode of MTV's fear Ghostwatcherz.com, Fairfield Hills' buildings range from the shock treatment building to the center for the criminally insane. The institution had a history of unauthorized lobotomies and mysterious deaths. The unique thing about Fairfield Hills is that it has an interconnected system of underground tunnels connecting most of the buildings to each other. WARNING: Although it has been abandoned since the mid-90's, proceed with EXTREME caution as there is almost always a cop or two there and at least 4 squad cars are guarding the location around Halloween.

This Institution which was at one time privately owned, now belongs to the state. It is now patrolled by state troopers. Inside there are many of underground tunnels, none of which you can actually pass through because they are all welded shut at the doors. This place was very strange. A few of the members claimed to have heard weird sounds and voices almost the entire time we were there. We did get a few good pictures. We also got one hell of an EVP out of the morgue!

I`ve been to the perimeter of this place. Its uber heavily guarded: no one`s getting in without special approval, and those that have tried to go in have gotten arrested on the spot. What are they hiding? Seriously creepy vibes even outside!

Ive been there on occasion.. it IS heavily guard.. was able to sneak inside what I found found out was a school. Sneaking around the outside was creepy. I am somewhat familiar with the layout and on two occasions saw a faint light coming from the basement aka "catacombs" i know the difference between a real light and an apparition.. this was no 60 watt lightbulb or emergency exit light. Great experience for those searching.

I used to work there and have experienced many eerie situations. I know of several suicides through personal involvement, I personally cut the cord from one's neck after he hung himself, and have seen a number of accidental deaths and at least 2 murders in the 25 years I worked there. Portions of the film Sleepers was filmed there and you can see scenes filmed in the tunnels where at least 1 rape occurred.

There is a fire escape by one of the resident guard buildings that can lead you inside. I went after seeing it on MTV fear, I had no idea about the place before that. I went it on a hot summer day, and just 20 steps or so in the door, it felt as cold as winter. Totally creeped me out and I turned around and left. When your friends dont go in with you, its a little scary to be in there alone.

Very interesting information. Thanks for posting everyone. I am searching for anything I can find about the (haunted) history of Newtown. I believe our home is haunted. It's actually a new home so I guess the grounds are haunted. Did anything significant happen here perhaps during the Revolutionary War? I live on New Lebbon in Sandy Hook.

You are right, it is the land that is haunted.  New Lebanon is highly active.  Ask anyone who has lived in Sandy Hook for any amount of time.  I would not live down there.

If you have seen the Demon Murder Case, it took place in Newtown and in Brookfield. How new is the house, and is there a well in the back?

all of these State institutions are haunted by the psychic shells of tormented persons , prisons /jails/where the inhumanity of man is enshrined and fear keeps the people in support of this barbarity. When persons because of aberrant behavior need be 'separated from others for mutual safety, they require an environment that is conducive to healing and true 'physicians' in possesion of the most valuable human virtue- COMPASSION. john

No...it is NOT hunted.  I worked there for 22 years back in the 70's through the 80's.  Yes, allot of things happened that were not kind..however, I never experienced a haunting.  Let the people rest.

I worked there. I am an experienced nurse who worked in many other hospitals, 4 of them were psychiatric. I never looked for ghosts and never saw them either. However I am aware that you can invite them into your life. People need to be aware of the danger of searching them out and should be informed about their source, their activity, past, present and their future prospects. I will write more on this at a later date.

I was a Patient in the ADAM House program in the early 90's. Although nothing ever happened in the building itself. The tunnels were eerie and left a pit in my stomach. Thats how they used to transport the meal carts. Staff used to take a kid or two on a high level for the walk. I AWOLed once with a friend and took off through the tunnels. Ended up in the morgue which grossed me out. Ended up exiting the tunnel through Cochran House and walked my rear back to Housatonic. ( Housatonic Adoles. Hosp)

I have been there during the day a few times recently. People are walking all over as it is open to the Public. Fields, walk your dog, anything. The only warnings are demands posted not to get within 15 feet. Yeah, it was a Mental Institution for 65 years but outside it just looks like an old, uncared for College campus. Just dark inside and a bunch of junk. You will find more ghosts in a regular hospital than Fairfield Hills.

My uncle was a patient there for several years.  He went missing about 1965.  His body was found in the woods behind the hospital a year after he disappeared.  The "official" findings were that my uncle somehow got out of the hospital, went for a walk in the woods and fell off a fence he was sitting on.

He supposedly hit his head on a rock and died (how dumb is that).  My father always felt he was murdered as my uncle was thinking of going public with stories of patient abuse.

There is a mistake in this description. Fairfield Hills was never 'Privately Owned'. It was a State run facility from the early 1930's to mid 1990's. It was sold to Newtown in 2004. You can walk around outside there all day if you wish to, nobody will bother you.

I was a resident here at age 16 back in 1985-86 in the ADAM house facility. I moved back to Newtown about 10 years ago and do a lot of ultralight flying in the area. I use one of the fields in the back of FFH to take off from a lot and wanted to offer up this aerial shot of the campus for anyone interested. The bottm left, and leftmost buildings are gone now, but the rest of the image is accurate. -Brendan Baker -NewtownFromTheAir.com http://www.ctchutes.com/Photos/FFH.jpg

i live 15 minutes from the hospital ive been there over 15 times theres never more then two guards on duty that drive around once every 20 minutes. theres usually always atleast 3 broken windows if you know where to look and you dont mine scalling the side of a building to get in a second floor window. ive been inside and while looking at my friend and talking to him everything went silent. i was watching his lips move but heard nothing coming out.

i went when i was in high school. one guard at night (feb) and we messed with him anyway. i think if you get caught you just get asked to leave. we did all the tunnels and climbed up to a clock tower too...pretty cool/scary. oh we also hit the autopsy room that was creepy with the refrigerators for dead bodies...i would suggest it if you like stuff like this

I went this past summer & planning to go tonight. There are a few security guards roaming around depending on the time of day and which day of the week you go on. There is definitely some kind of paranormal activity going on there. I went with a group of 7 people and we all felt uncomfortable. It was extremely cold in certain parts of the building. I had a sick feeling up until i left the property. Ready to go with someone who is not chicken to further investigate.

Greetings, I was sitting at my computer this morning, my memories were brought back to the days that I was a patient at Fairfield Hills. So this morning I've decided to look up the hospital on the internet. After reading about it's closure and seeing a section where you can write your thoughts, I'm writing a quick note about my experiences. My three year stay was from October of 1972 until August of 1975.I was 14 years old when I was admitted. My Dad had a psychologist refer me to there because I took a neighbor's care out for a joy ride.I was interviewed by an Indian doctor, put in Shelton for the admit, then sent to Greenwich 2A. I was put on 200mgs of Thorazine QID, with 100mgs more at "hour of sleep". Eventually, I was sent to a teen day-program that they had on the top floor of the Cochran hospital bldg. For the most part it was ok, but when boys would get in a fight, the male staff would hold you down and squeeze your testicles until they figured you screamed and cried long enough. That happed to me on two occassions...I loved my grounds pass. Seals and Croft and James Taylor were on the juke box in the store below the Gym building. Also on the juke box over in Canaan. I was in Greenwich when Joe Gillotte decided to take a can of lighter fluid and set fire to the linen closet, burning the building down. I was with a staff member working on 2A that afternoon when he decided, after getting almost all of the patients out,to lock 2B's door rather than keeping it open, sealing the fate of the old man making his way to the door. I told that idiot to keep the door open, that the old guy was almost there, but he said no. I told the Nurse Supervisor on duty down in the parking lot, but she just said "Well, it was just his (the old man's) time to go..." The old man was known to be cranky, so I guess they didn't care. After the fire, we were sent to Litchfield. Eventually they opened another teen program called "ADAM House" (Adolescents Developing And Maturing) with Dr. Lenny Sucutliff (I'm sure I butchered the spelling of his last name...). Anyway, I just wanted to write some of my thoughts today on a place that doesn't exist anymore. Sometimes, you just get to thinking about significant times in your life and you just want to write them down, not knowing if anyone would ever read it or even care. But thank you for the opportunity to do this. Sincerely, Stephen W. Bramblett, Music Teacher, Mission Creek School, P.O. Box 1066 South Bend, WA 98586 (maestro88@rocketmail.com) This is the email I sent to the Hopsital Administrator's office, bbut the site and been shut down.

A few years back id say about the year 2006.I managed to slip into this facility. Quite a gloomy place if you ask me. To make this short, hauntings do exist and they can occur if any spirit has not been put to rest. Some are demonic some are neutral nothing more than either one. The demonic tension of spirits and or noises and phenomenon inside this place was horrific. Supernatural lights and screeches could be seen and heard. They were definitely not of this earth. Can't say i would ever return to such a desolate place, the ice cold air inside was completely shocking considering it was 89 degrees outside this building. Do not attempt to talk or confront the dead for they will answer in most cases and a good majority of spirits that linger upon this earth are not looking to make friends with you or your companions.

not all of the tunnels are closed, i was in fairfield hills last saturday and today, and we went through multiple underground tunnels. i don't believe it is haunted, and the patrol officers suck, like honestly only saw two times i went and it was when we were leaving. we basically entered the buildings in broad daylight in the open, and we were fine. but i suggest you check it out, good times.

I WAS THERE LAST NIGHT 04/04/09 My 2 friends and I went and took pictures at 10 or 11 pm. At the Litchfield house we heard a very loud crash from inside the building and ran as fast as we could back to the car. As we were leaving though we got stopped by the cops and we all got $92 tickets for "simple trespassing"

I heard that another one of the reasons why everyone is so adamant about keeping people out of Fairfield Hills is because when they closed it down, they didn't have the funds to transfer all of the patients to other facilities so they simply let them out of their rooms and some of them still live there today. My bf has gone twice with a group his friends and he claims to have seen lights underneath one of the doors so they like slowly backed away or whatever but then he looked toward a door or something and there was someone staring at them through a glass window like a real person you know? He flipped out and then the others saw the guy too and they bolted. I guess one of them left their jacket on the floor because there were a bunch of cubicles where they went and they didnt want to get lost, and when they were running to get away from the person they saw, the jacket wasn't on the floor anymore, but was on the door handle leading to the way out.

I live nearby fairfield hills here and now nearby they are are repaving roads and they built a new exercise facility in place of another old one in the northern corner. There are security guards on 247 watch. Me and a fried went past the reed school and past the fences to get near a building with a cylinder brick building leading up into the sky. I don't know what the structure was originally used for but when me and my friend got it from the backside, Before entering we heard loud screams and howling noises and the air felt like 30 degrees F on a summer day. We were scared shitless and bolted and on the way out through the woods we saw a pair of gloves on a freshly cut tree, its wood smell shrouding the area, these newly placed objects were not there on the way in. A second time we went into a house and it smelled like boiling sand, cold creepy vibes were everywhere. And when we went back to the door that we clearly shut on the way in was now wide open.

I JUST GOT BACK FROM THIS PLACE!!!! I was unable to get in the buildings and almost got caught!!! I went with one other friend. We were both dressed in camo, face masks and everything. We parked in some condo place and walked through the woods surrounding the path way(walking trail through the woods). Before we entered we did our research and walked/drove though on numerous occasions. we had planned to go in though a window that had been previously opened. Its the building behind the soccer field. Only problem is we had to park on the complete opposite side of the grounds. We started the journey around 7:45, it wasn't pitch black but we wanted to give our eyes time to adjust. So we begin to walk to a building adjacent to the baseball field. There were bats flying over head (I thought it was pretty sweet, my friend thought they were attacking lol). We make it to a dirt mound and are confronted with a decision. We could go right and walk though a parking lot that was lit up like a christmas tree or.. we could go left through a construction zone lit up with Night hawks(TM) (aka big freakin lights) We go to the left taking cover behind trucks and in shadows to get past the lights. At this point we have not seen or heard any cars or trucks in the area. We see the target building which appears to be pitch black (night hawk free). To are left we have a clear view of the security house (and vise versa). we're creeping through shadows when we run into another night hawk. We cant run around or behind it so we wait until the road is clear and make a break to our breach point. This is a U-shaped building, u are on the inside of the U so a cell phone light would bring daylight to this SOB. We check the two breach points we investigated during the day. Both are closed! We start playing our next move when all of a sudden the night hawk shuts off. We make a break to the only dark area a passing flash light could not expose. Head lights begin to approach our position (keep in mind that we never heard the tuck coming!). We are safe in the shadow and wait for the truck to pass. We both decide its time to book. We run towards the other field and around the fence. At this point we are running up a grassy hill when all of a sudden we hear sirens. They continue to get closer as we are half way up the field and out of breath. The song "Run" by Ghostface killa begins to play in my head. We lay low in a ditch on top of the hill until the sirens pass (my friend claims it was a passing ambulance). We make it behind a newly renovated building and head towards the woods. While in the woods we took out our flashlight (red bulb to avoid detection and to maintain night vision). We are still in the woods but almost in the complex when a car passes by. We lay low and avoid detection. We are ready to exit the woods when the SECURITY TRUCK PASSES BY! We have no idea why he was up there but we never saw him leave so we held our positions. My friends car was parallel to a shack of some sort so we couldn't tell if the truck had parked next to it or behind it to block us in. It was a stupid place to park we just didn't want to take a reserved spot. I advance towards the shack and begin to creep behind it peeking around the corner. COAST WAS CLEAR! We bounced. This place really isn't all that easy to sneak into. We did pass up a window blocked by a ladder only because we were unaware of the guards location. The light was shut off so he could have a better view of the area we were in. I'm still not sure if he saw movement, or if his actions were part of a routine. If you plan on sneaking in during the night please take a few steps to avoid getting caught! Don't go with a group!- there are not enough hiding places for the brady bunch. We recommend the buddy system. Don't wear black!- Dark green or blue. If ur white like me cover up your face and hands to avoid glowing in the dark! Give your eyes time to adjust- This will give an advantage over paul blart mall cop,If your going to use a flashlight make it red. Its hard to detect and ur eyes wont have to readjust! Find a good parking space- make it close to where u would like to enter. Don't park at the school or any where ur not supposed to be. The condo place was perfect but before u approach ur getaway vehicle, keep an eye out for security! Be safe, have fun, and dont get caught!

I live in town and there is a rediculousley easy way to get in day or night (secret). I've been there many times and love the place. Prior to destruction last month, the tunnels were all open but some were flooded. All but a handfull of buildings will be gone by the end of summer and the remaining few will be sold to buisnesses.

yes I lived here from 00-02 and there is something there. I was there when mtv did there little taping. I have seen lights in the empty building across from me and cold breath on my neck. Yes someone did kill them self while I was there it was one of the older guys and he hung himself. They found him like 5 hours later. I traveled through the tunnels and seen the inside of a lot of the buildings. I can never forget this place. it some how lives in me, sounds stupid but I cant explain. I didn't believe in ghost, altho in an empty room I knew I wasn't alone. It was weird, not scary but coldly comfortable. I would hear running, laughing, my name and even something touching me. weird cause I scream over everything but there I remember never being scared.

Most of the stories I've seen here are a bunch of horse pucky. I worked there in the late 60's. Knew some great people, a few jerks. Met my second wife there, we were married 25 yrs.

Mrs. Adams was directer of nursing. Mrs Morris, instructor. Ed Mesalko, ward charge 3-c kent house. Dr. Kelly, Canan house. Many others I fondly remember.

There was some abuse of patients by idiots but anyone caught was fired.

The tunnels were slightly creepy but they were necessary to get from one  building to another with control and safety of patients.

I have many fond memories of that place, a few sad ones as well.

I lived in Sandy Hook, my Mother and Grand parents lived there also. Mother worked at Southbury. So I guess I know the area.

Would love to chat with anyone about  Fairfield Hills. Ron. hatmanadv@aol.com

I am currently replacing the old elevator in the building which is to become the new town hall. I never knew this place ever exhisted and had never been here before. I can't help but feel chills as I look around the basement area with all the tunnels to the various other buildings blocked. An unmistakable feeling of fear and nervousness overwhelms you as I walked around the grounds today at lunch with my coworker. I could tell he was as nervous if not more than I was. Words cannot describe pure evil......

I went there over this past summer. It's a pretty cool place. I went with two of my friends and we could have gotten into the basement but we were all too scared to actually go down there, plus we really didn't want to get stuck in there. There are sheets of wood covering the basement windows that you can just peel back to get in, there's also a lot of broken doors and windows you can climb into and whatnot. There really isn't much security, but we also went on a thursday afternoon so it may change with the timing, there's also a lot of construction workers and people walking their dogs and whatnot. There's definitely a feeling of general uncomfort and nervousness, and one of my friends and I pounded on one of the knocked doors to see if anything would happen, we were just fooling around really, and someone faintly knocked back. At that point we just walked away briskly, knowing fully well none of us want to admit anything happened. We went to a few other buildings after that and nothing strange really happened other than feeling really uncomfortable. Just looking at the place from outside is, indeed, creepy. Mainly because it's falling apart.

I lived there for three weeks in the dorm (Kent House?) in 1990. It was creepy, but not spooky. I was there on an externship while in dental school to treat the patients in the dental clinic. THe dorm was empty, except for me. It wasn't haunted or anything. THe scariest thing about that place was the patients. They were criminally insane so there were a lot of murderers in the bunch. Other than that, it was just an old-fashioned place with really great doctors and staff.

Hi,

I'm doing research for a novel and would love to chat with any former employees/patients of Fairfield Hills.

Disclaimer: I'm not interested in sensationalizing the hospital. I'm merely looking for some bits and bites, some authentic details, etc.

this post reads that it's unique because of the underground tunnels. i actually worked at northampton state hospital as security after it closed and that was connected by tunnels as well. it was pretty normal for larger psychiatric institutions to have underground tunnels. i saw fairfield for the first time the other day. spooky as hell. it will sadly get torn down like the rest of the great mental institutions.

ive been here once....never got inside...the most that happened the night we went there was my friend and i noticed the wind blowing really hard in the woods on the left of the campus near one of the buildings that said to stand back 15 feet because it was falling over. the wind was blowing so hard it made the trees rattle very violently, then stopped very suddenly a few seconds later.

Fairfield Hills is located on Wasserman Way (Mile Hill Road)in Newtown. You can get there from exit 10 or 11 off I-84. It is now home to Newtown Youth Academy...although all the old creepy buildings are still there too. The prison (Garner Correctional) is located on the same street...which might be the scarrier of the two!

Planning on going in the next week or two. Going in with toxic dust respirators due to the lead paint and asbestos.I would suggest no one go in without one, especially if you plan to enter a duplex, which is apparently the main building that are deadly.

Hi everybody. My friends and i went to check out fairfield hills for quite some time. We are very interested of trying to get access to the morgue and the lab through the tunnel at Litchfield House. We heard that most of the tunnels are filled up except for Litchfield and the lab and morgue obviously. We were wondering if any of you nice people would like to tell us either the current condition whether you still could go into the morgue or even better, how to get to the tunnel entrance because i am retarded and don't know anything about directions. We went into Litchfield before at night and it was cool no paranormal activity though :(. Please get back as soon as possible. Thanks PS We went there this year (2011)

the facts in this article are wrong... it was once owned by the state, and now its owned by the town of newtown. also newtown is probably one of the largest towns in ct regarding area an with around 20k people i think its safe to say the population isn't dainty either. the town is slowly converting the buildings into town offices and is deciding this year what to do with the rest, so if you have to get your ghost hunting fix, i would get it done soon. as for someone who actually has a copy of the maps, as a hint, bridgeport house is the main hub

OK. WOW. I wrote the first paragraph of this article on a different website about 6 1/2 years ago(in the small...) and for some reason it seemed to catch on and was borrowed by many other sites including this one. I'm not sure where the second paragraph came from, this site most likely added it. It is a fact that Fairfield Hills was never privately owned, rather it was state sponsored, as were many institutions in the 20th century. Anyway, what you need to know is that I was 16 when I wrote that little paragraph and when I attempted to drive around the campus at 11pm with friends. It was mid to late October. Now I know times have undoubtedly changed since then, but I can tell you that we were pulled over, cuffed, and subsequently arrested for trespassing. It was most certainly the Newtown police and not the state police that arrested us. However, during the day I believe the grounds are now currently open to the public. There are plans for development and leveling of some of the structures so get there while you can! Also to my friend above, at the time I wrote the first paragraph, Newtown had about 16,000 residents. seeing as I am from Norwalk by way of Manhattan, in my subjective little world, I would call that a small town. I worked at FHH from 1989 till its closing in 1996. Have been in & all thru the tunnels, the morgue etc..... While it is surely a creepy place I had never encountered anything that I would consider ghostly or haunted, not hard to believe tho that such a place might be inhabited by the souls of past residents.Lynnette

I live down the street and take my dogs for walks there all the time. It's got great jogging paths and playing fields. The town hall is there now as well as a youth center. In the summer, there is an organic farmer's market. It's guarded at night because of YOU crazy people who are always trying to break into the buildings. Stay away and leave Newtown alone.

my father was a patient there. litchfield house drug ward. i also had a teacher who was a nurse there. when i asked my teacher about it she had a pained face that looked horrific and wouldnt say anything about it. my father also wouldnt go into detail except for the fact it had to been one of worst places to be in.

Unlike other Newtown residents, I won't tell you to stay away from this place. It is full of history, whether that be good or bad history is up for debate, and the attention Fairfield Hills garners due to its' haunted past is the reason these buildings have not met a wrecking ball decades ago.

That being said, growing up 5 minutes down the road has afforded me some creepy encounters at Fairfield Hills. The most recent one occurring in July of 2012. While most articles say there are numerous cops and guards patrolling the grounds, this did not ring true on the day I visited. In broad daylight, around 2pm, a group of 4 of us drove through campus. We parked and begun walking around, taking pictures of the great architectural elements. Someone in the group tugged at a padlock on the door facing the woods behind, and it was actually unlocked. We proceeded inside and were met with a stairwell. We went upstairs and the door on the first landing was locked. We peered through the dusty glass and saw what appeared to be a children's floor. There were murals of teddy bears and nature scenes on the walls and a small crib in the hallway. We went up one more floor, to the top, and discovered this door unlocked. We were met with a long, wide hallway and proceeded into the first room on our left which appeared to be a bathroom with numerous stalls. The next room was a large room with isolation rooms surrounding it. Each "cell" had a heavy door and barred window. We spent about 15 minutes taking pictures before we heard a set of heavy footsteps from what sounded to be above us. Problem was, we were on the top floor.

Our first thought was that perhaps a homeless person(s) had taken refuge in the building and were coming to see who we were. We wrapped things up and headed down the stairs, as we reached the second floor landing we head the footsteps again but this time they were VERY close. Almost as if they were right behind us. They had the exact cadence of a person walking in what sounded like heavy boots. At this point we ran.

Fairfield Hills is a place time forgot. There are still papers strewn across the floors, beds and cribs scattering the halls, and perhaps even patients still inside (one way or another). Newtown is rennovating the more use-able buildings for office use so go explore while you can!

i was here tonight, a few nights before halloween and no officers were there. i also went about a week ago. we didn't get out of the car the first time. tonight we did, it's pretty cool. the building is condemned so there is a fence completely around it and a sign posted saying stay back 15 feet. there is a large hole in the fence surrounding the building made for people to gst in and out. the building was difficult to find at first, a goid portion of the other buildings are usrd as some type of school/sporting arenas i believe. this particular building is through a gate down a dirt road. it is not difficult to navigate. i plan on going during the day and looking for a way in and also to try to use the tunnels and locate the morgue.

anyone can go out and walk around during the day, its pretty much a park. but if you start looking like you're gonna mess around ie walking around close to the buildings at night, you're going to run into trouble. also most of the tunnels have been filled in.
