Location Description:

An abandoned asylum for the feeble minded or mentaly retarded. Part of it is apparently used for storage for old UCONN stuff but other parts have a very weird vibe to them. Many pictures have been taken with "orbs", especially outside and in the basement.

UPDATE

Mansfield Training School Redevelopment Masterplan
Location: Mansfield, Connecticut
Date Completed: March, 1996
Client: State of Connecticut: Policy Development & Planning Division

Dodson Associates, Ltd. completed this masterplan for redeveloping a 160 acre section of an approximately 1,000 acre former state mental institution into a new village center. Extensive areas of prime farmland, over 90 existing buildings — some of them historic — as well as location of a dangerous highway intersection within the project area all contributed to a complex and challenging design problem. The project included the supervision of a multi—disciplinary team including market analysts, architects and engineers. The Masterplan calls for major sections of the property to be placed in agricultural and forest land preservation with remaining areas to be developed for affordable, rental and market rate housing, congregate elderly facilities and commercial development. Renovation of the existing historic buildings was also recommended and accommodated in the Masterplan.

this place is so creepy, i drove through it and it is almost surreal. There is a place called "The Knight Hospital" with big stone pillars. There are also two large smokestacks. All in all a very creepy place.

The correct location for the Training Center area is at the intersection of Routes US-44 and CT-32 in Mansfield Depot, CT. The land belongs to the University of Connecticut now. The vibe in the whole area is really creepy, especially since many buildings still have blinds in the broken windows that blow around in the wind. All in all a really spooky, eerie place.

I've visited the training school at night with a few friends just to check it out. I took photos and there was orbs all around my friends head. It looks as if the people just got up and left..furniture is still there and its all falling apart. You can hear the water dripping and supposedly the second floor of the insane asylum is caving in. It was very spooky..I would recommend going unless you get frightened easily, then I'd stay at home.

Everything is still there, scenery is half finished. it was really creapy, but an amazing experience. the place is falling apart. the cooledt part was the florecent lights were still glowing, but barely... must have been on for a long time.

I work with some people who lived here until it closed and we have taken "remember when" rides through the campus. As expected, there were some sad and horrid memories but they also shared memories of happy times, funny events and good friends.

Very creepy...there are old halloween decorations and little kid drawings scattered everywhere. And in one building, the entire floor is covered in dead birds, as if it was fumigated or something. Seriously, it's impossible to step anywhere in that building without crunching on a bird carcass. and birds of all sizes, but they're all mangled and aged- bones visible. It reeked of death. There were also those orange jack o lantern candy bins everywhere, and toy easter eggs. We made it up to the attic, where there's a giant gash in the ceiling and you can see out into the sky. There's all these old christmas decorations up there too. Simply spooky... I want to find this theatre you speak of. And the morgue...

Just visited the hospital with my mom and dad. Creepy to say the least. Standing outside of the Knight Hospital, both my parent's could smell cigar or cigarette smoke. In the same area, we heard something "crash" or fall inside the building... We ran back to the car! It was a great Halloween experience - We opted not to go inside - fear of the unknown - as well as asbestos! lol I'd recommend making a trip if you've never been!

I worked at the Knight hospital for three years and in other cottages there for the remaining 3 before the place began to close up. I was aware of ghostly happenings in the early 1980s but never anything sinister or really spooky. The really scarey memories are of the overcrowded wards with aggressive people who could really hurt you for good..and the locked units where there were biters and rapists. The hospital had several wards that were called Wallace North (severely physically re4stricted men and women with profound mental retardation. That,s where I started in 1980. There were no personal wheelchairs or even clothing besides mens t shirts and cloth diapers with pins) and Wallace South(Higher functioning men and women with behavioral issues.) and Wing A (I worked there in the mid eighties. There were young people tyhere in their late teens in early thirties. The residents were very active and fun, but the ward was extremely overcrowded)We used to smoke pot in the abandoned morgue which is located in the basement of the hospital. And yes, the orbs were around even then...we would see them working third shift just little lights dancing around the room.

Definitely a place to go. I've been here well over 30 times within the past 2 years as my friends and I try to explore more and more of the underground tunnels. It's really a place to go, especially at night. The Knight Hospital is a great place to explore. If you go into the attic of the building next to the stairs you will see a note that a woman had written when she stayed there. The only experience I've ever had at the place was I was in the basement and we heard a faint yell of a woman's voice coming from upstairs. My friends and I visit this place a lot so if you have any questions about it then shoot me an email at redsox_052004@yahoo.com.

I worked in Wallace North, starting in 1982. The residents were all dressed the same most of the time- white t-shirts, grey pants, sneakers. The pants were referred to as "dope pants', because they were elastic-waisted pants that looked the same if they were put on frontwards or backwards. The residents then moved to a "cottage" on the grounds. I left to attend nursing school in 1984. As I recall, there were several employees who physically abused/harmed residents, mostly in the "behavioral" units.

My wife and I worked at this hospital too on overnights. I worked from '80 to '88 in Campbell North one on one with Richard M.- a client that would claw, scratch, bite and climb you like a tree just for fun. The hospital itself was really creepy. I actually saw shadows go quickly by in the doorways. I attributed this to working third shifts and doubles. I still work in this field, and things have really changed. I'd like to talk to some other ex-employees. Please email me at renyscruisein@yahoo.com

I worked at Mansfield Training school from January 6 1966 until MArch of 1977 (off and on I worked my way through UConn and actually lived on the grounds in Demmick House It was only $12 a pay period. I worked mostly on the second shift in all the profoundly retarded wards. Back then we had delonquents that were also placed there as "mental Defectives" Actually they probably had a culture free IQ int he 120' and 30's It was a "colony for the feeble minded that merged with an "Eileptic Colopny back in the late 30's. The army put a bunch of conscientous objecters from WWII there to wrok with "The Kids" I wrote a number of short stories about the conditions there. I actually wound up running the night shift. There were 26 buildings and 1200 people living there. I had 120 employees. I was only 19 when I started working with the people there. When they closed most of the big buildings down, we opened up Group homes (Community Based Residential Treatment Centers) I lived in Enfield group home and Simsbury group home for 2 years with my children. I'm writing a book about my life and experiences at the training center. I hope to have it published by next year

I meant I worked in Campbell West, not Campbell North. Knight hospital was very creepy, but so were the basements of the large star-shaped buildings. We did a lot of overtime in most of the buildings at Mansfield. We spent holidays there and got froze in when people didn't show up. Some of the clients seemed to have psychic abilities- they would know your name. I went through my in-service tour with Ray and Renee and we ran into a client in Wallace who I'd never met, he told me my name, both first and last. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. I'd just come up from Johnstone hall where we organized a tour to do vital signs and bathing of these clients. Anyway, if you worked there, please email me so we can talk. renyscruisein@yahoo.com

I worked in the Social Service Dept. when it was housed in Dimmock House. I began working there in the 70's and stayed at MTS until it closed. The last several years I worked there, Dimmock was closed and we were all moved to offices in the Knight Hospital. Nothing very spooky happened to me at either building. I do remember the wonderful social workers I worked with and the Bible studies held during lunch time in my office for many years. I did hear about some strange happenings during third shift, but most of them involved the staff, not ghostly beings!

Hello all, I have a question I'm hoping someone would answer. I have been recently tring to research my family tree. I came across this website when looking for information about MTS. I'm looking to find out what happened to my grandfather. I guess from what I'm told he was someone who suffered from eplepsy and was a heavy drinker. He was my paternal grandfather and my father had not seen him since he was 10 years old. The only information I have about him was due to his drinking and eplepsy he was sent to live at MTS. Well he died in the late 60's early 70's (Still don't know the exact date) and no one knows much besides that. My father got a letter around this time in the mail stateing he was dead and a social security check for a few hundred dollars. The problem is, is that he was buried by the state of connecticut and to this day, no one knows where that was. My father was kept out of the loop, and my grandmother has been dead as well for many years. One strange thing about all this is that I cannot for the life of me find out anything as to where he is buried and when he died. I've gotten his birth certificate and marrage licence from the city he was born, but his death is still a big mystery. I've tried Ancestry.com the SSN# death index and I've even tried calling the state (What a big waste of time that was) So if anyone has any information that would be helpful please drop me a line at Brian31276@yahoo.com Thanks

Hello Brian , I know this is over a year since you have posted that inquiry.  I can tell you a little bit .  I am in the same boat . I have a Aunt who was taken there by the State. Both my father and his brother were taken in by family members. However my Aunt was "mentally challenged" to what degree I do not know but she was in Mansfield. Odd seeing that is where I wound up living and have been for the last 32 years. All I've been able to find out is this , and its NOT pleasant . There are to date 88 people missing , meaning not accounted for. If you died there chances were you were cremated. If you were a "ward" of the state as she was, then the state was under no obligation to bury them or mark a grave for them.  I am sorry for your loss but it appears we are not alone. I don't think the state counted on years later folks doing ancestry infor. If you ask me the State need to answer for this.  I think its a disgrace and dis respectful regardless of how ill they were . You have my condolences you can try record digging in town hall in Mansfield.

feel free to email me at LJPOULIN@sbcglobal.net

I grew up 2 minites away from this site, and it's held a strong place in my heart for Urban Exploration.  My grandmother user to work at the training school, and my mother has memories of visiting her at work.  She would often stop by to watch movies at the theater or visit her favorite patients.  Today, the Knight Hospital  is AMAZING for UrbEx, and although I've never seen anything, I have personally heard footsteps and doors opening/closing.  There's a extremely creepy vibe, and it's got hundreds of fantastic photo ops.  A word of caution, though - it IS patroled by cops, and there IS a prison right down the road, so be VERY careful when visiting or you WILL get arrested!

We smashed out one of the windows and jumped on in. Once we were in we walked down one of those corridores and wound up in the torture room. In the torture room there was an electric chair and a bunch of poison bottles. we walked out unknowing that shmitty was still in the room we heard a yell turned around and shmitty was in the electric chair with the poisin bottle in his hand DEAD

That wasn't a torture room... that was the laboratory and radiology suite on the lower level of Knight Hospital. I've seen pictures of this in YouTube videos. The chair had arm straps to hold the patient still so that the lab tech could draw their blood. The big jugs of chemicals were for developing x-ray films. I used to work across the hall from this area.

I think we all would have heard this on the news if this was the case. If you are going to make up a story, at least try to be convincing about it.

You must be an idiot to think  this was an electric chair. and bottles of poison.  Really now, you admit to drinking, breaking into the place and then some how you expect your fanacy stories to suddenly become reality.  And your role model is Homer Simpson......  Right??

If any relative became a ward of the state via state mental hospital or an institution like MTS, good luck trying to get any information. Sorry. The state just disposes of them efficiently and only a few close staff who worked with them will remember. If there was no family contact for any length of time (even just a few years) then your relative would have been remembered by staff and then disappeared from the planet otherwise. Even now, clients with no immediate family contact are cremated (sp?) and their ashes are placed in a plastic bag and then in a cardboard box. My staff and I were handed this box and told to do whatever we wanted with it. We treated the person's remains with respect and we had our own little ceremony honoring her life and our memory of her. Regarding negative descriptions of past behavioral clients at MTS, I thank God that medications have come a LONG way. I can only imagine some of my clients with no meds or with meds that do not work for them. Yieks!!!!

My comment to your log. UNBELIEVABLE. My aunt was there ward of the state, yes had some mental disability. I know your post is old , however I am doing my family tree. Unfortunatate there IS no information on her, don't know when she went there , do know she died there as my father said she did. But NO burial of anything for these poor souls. I think the State should truly be ashamed of themselves. Regardless of what the mental disability was they were humans and HAD families. I feel so disheartened. If you feel you can help me find out what happened to her please contact me at LJPOULIN@sbcglobal.net

The best memories that I have of MTS are watching the progress of some of the people that had little to no opportunities to learn and be treated like adults. I was glad to witness the reduction of medications that were not working any more and see personalities come out in people. I have brought the knowledge of how to teach with me to my job at STS where I have been since right before MTS closed.

ive never been to this place, but ive driven by it, even driving by it and looking up and seeing the old windows with the curtains still attached to the windows still scares me a little, and Spring Manor Farm where the Training School had 2 of their Cottages one was Oak Cottage, i dont remember the name of the other one, but you can go down past the 2 houses and theres a railroad crossing there then a road that goes down to the Willimantic River(turn Right for that) if you go left you go by the old Trash incinerator which still has traces of burned and melted Garbage inside it

It is right at the junction of Rte. 32 and 44 in Mansfield CT.  You will see it. Hard to miss. Caution, there is a jail on the estate of the Training center. They will arrest you if they catch you in there. As the State still owns all that property. good luck

Has anyone ever had a run in with cops there? Is it easy to explore without getting arrested or a ticket?

The address listed is incorrect.  The actual address is 219 Middle Turnpike, Mansfield, CT.  As it's been posted before, just go to the intersection of 44 and 32 and you can't miss it.  Once you get there you'll see all of the old abandoned buildings.  Most of them are easily accessible through open doors/windows.  There are active buildings near it so just be careful with being spotted.  I haven't seen any "no trespassing" signs so if you get caught you'd probably just be asked to leave without any issue.  I've never had any problem with police during the times I've been there.  Be careful in the basement - there's asbestos everywhere.

Anyone who explores the knight hospital has other things to worry about then hauntings. You should worry about the amount of asbestos and the balck mold in the building. Uconn has a website that instructs there staff on how to enter the building with the wright safety equipment and resperators. If you do go there just keep this in mind try not to stur up any dust.

My boyfriend and I have gone inside multiple times, and all I have to say is; I LOVE THIS BUILDING.

It's absolutely incredible. Knowing the history of the place (a hospital/boarding house for the mentally retarded/insane) has given it a whole new meaning when we explore. I really recommend trying to get through to the lower levels, within the realm of safety. It's incredibly spooky- stairs that you can't go up (debris), hallways that end in nothing (HOLY FRIIIICK it was amazing), bones inside dirt-floor storage rooms (in the hallway that ends with nothing)... The whole building is just ripe with history and stories that I don't think will ever be properly told.

We have had no problems with cops at all- we've seen none patrolling, nor have we seen any 'No Trespassing' signs. The only words of caution that I would say are these- Watch for cars driving by on the roads (there's still traffic through the campus), and try not to make too much noise considering that adjacent buildings are still in use. We've had no problems and I don't foresee any.

Another safety tip- HEAVY BOOTS. There's so much broken glass and water on the ground that it's suicide for your feet if you go in with anything less than a super-tough rubber sole. I recommend hiking boots or those thick rubber rain-boots. A good flashlight is also a must. We also recommend bringing breathing masks- there's so much mildew, mold, and water damage that it's best to just breathe through a filter at all times, not to mention the high potential for lead paint and asbestos.

If you want to see some of the photos we took on one of our trips, you can check them out here-->

I hope to have more photos posted of the Knight Hospital soon. The other photos shown are also Depot campus buildings- there are a few more (much more stable) buildings around the hospital that are also worth exploring.

If you've got any questions, you can contact me at wolfrun0@gmail.com . ^^ Have fun and be safe, guys!

It's hard to believe it looks that dilapidated now. It was bright and sunny when I worked there. It had nice paint on the walls, the grounds were landscaped... it looked like a state park. When I worked first shift, I worked down 44 on the right hand side-- a building called Campbell. When the challenged people had behaviors, the phone would ring and some staff from each of the buildings would be sent to help deal with it if needed. Most of the clients there were awesome and a joy to be around. When I started there, the youngest client was maybe 12 or 13 and the oldest was in their nineties.

I went to the dental clinic, the so-called "torture room" many times. The dentist was a humorous guy named Dr. Callahan. We had a few other skilled medical doctors on grounds. The people at the ENT clinic and X-ray lab were awesome. It took a lot of responsible people to keep a place that size running and staffed.

Still hoping to hear from fellow former employees! If you know of any other sites former Mansfield employees frequent, let me know. I'd like to compare notes about this field of work now, as well as then, and where we're going to.

email: renyscruisein@yahoo.com

PS- Here's Dustin Hoffman visiting the building Lyon's (on the right hand side going down Rt 44) in 1987, researching for his role in Rain Man. I'm shaking his hand while I take the photo. I heard he went to lunch with the personnel manager and secretaries. We were told to keep quiet about him visiting and only a few people within the building knew. Many stars visited and would perform for us at the Longley Field and School on occasion.

I've heard a lot about this place and what an incredible, if "creepy" experience it is. I'm very eager to roam around, but I've heard that is is patrolled regularly and many people have been arrested on the spot for illegal trespassing.

Can anyone tell me how likely you are to get arrested now? Have the police stopped patrolling it as much as they used to? I'm trying to gauge whether or not it's worth going. Any info is much appreciated.

I was there recently. Many buildings to walk around and see. Building are in great shape. The police did not bother the two of us as I think they saw our cameras and did not intend to enter any of the buildings. Each building is of it's own desighn. We spent 3 hours walking the property and even had lunch on the lawn. Very safe there and no weird feelings at all.      BCM58@AOL.COM

mess of college and/or high school kids trashed a lot of the buildings partying in them. The place is patrolled by officers routinely. The patrolling officers are State Police and K-9 units are with them. They go through more at night during the day, but I've noticed that they stop at all the buildings and do quick checks. Most are boarded up. If the boards are down they sweep the buildings and reseal. I live practically on the property so you see quite a bit.

I work in the Longley building, right next door to the training school. The Longley building was a school built in 1951, so it's not that old. This is where the "abandoned theater" is. This building was empty for about 15 years, and is filled with old laboratories. I can assure you that this building is not haunted, I have been working here for the past few months. It is however creepy to go into the theater with the lights still on, the old projectors are still there and such. I can't imagine it's been closed for more than 15 years, its just deteriorates quickly around here. Also, there is no need to break into this building, if you want to see around during the day the front door is open as it is a Uconn/ public office building.

As for the training school, I can attest to the common smell of tobacco smoke when no one is smoking anywhere around. I have even attest for this inside of the Longley building. I would not go into the buildings because the police will issue you a $200+ ticket, and they are falling apart. I have several pictures from the outside of the buildings that show what might be apparitions in the windows.

dont worry about the po po.  Just dont park right next to the building so they'll be no suspicion that anyone is inside.  Ive been inside a few times throught the years seeing as how i grew up in mansfield.  Id suggest bringing a dust mask as alot of the paint is peeling and possible asbestos in the basement level.

Eventually i went into some of the tunnels that conenct the building together.  If your feeling adventurous enough to explore the tunnels bring some cheap rubber boots because during the warm weather theres sewage in the tunnel, only a few inches.

The easy access to the tunnel level an be found on the main floor in the furthermost north wing of the building.  Also on eh third floor of the north wing of the building you can find a room filled with old records that WHUS used to store there, there currently being thrown around as frisbees by drunken college kids so if you wnat to take some go ahead.  If you enter in the tunnel from the north wing of the building youll come to another perpendicular tunnel that slopes up to teh right.  If you follow it dowward on the left youll come to abandoned power plant basement(shud be flooded).

I just saw the same show, paranormal witness, and I tried searching the internet for information about the lady claiming to live in the house (although the institution was made up of many buildings) and the child's bones she found in the basement.  At the end of the show there was text that said the bones were in the hands of the state's medical examiner.  I did not find anything on this!  Are they lying?

Makes me wonder why TAPS has never been to these places of eyewitness claims.

I think paranormal activity is over exhagerating what people have seen and heard. I believe there is something out there but why is everyone on the show stay.

No one is lying about anything of the house in the show "paranormal witness" - I know the house in question very well, its sits right on RT.32 just outside of the campus of the mansfield training school grounds - Ive know several people that have had a experences there - One person was a watchman for the grounds after it closed - He claimed alot of strange things, dooors opening & closing, moaning sounds and shadows - The other person worked on the grounds maintenace crew - He always said that strange things would happen - The crew would leave there tools in one place and the next day they would be moved in someway, sometimes even to another room.

The show alleged a six year child was murdered at MTS. There is no record that this ever occurred yet Paranormal Witness said it did. Also, the remains found at the end were shown to contain a human vertebrae. PROOF themselves admits they turned over 'burial material' to the State police but did not express certainty that they were human remains. Hence, the image of the human bones shown in the show was a fabrication.

Far too many mistruths in that show to take it seriously. Now the family in the house is offering paid overnight stays to those interested in experiencing a paranormal encounter. So it's a money grab.

I worked at MTS as a nurse from 1977 to 1987.  Beautiful grounds and great place to be employeed. I work 3rd shift at Knight Hospita then 1st shift at Stafford Circle before transferring to Kennedy, Walters and Colchester cottages. I worked with caring and dedicated staff that went above and beyond what was asked of them to provide a home and family feeling for the residents in their care. Was the facility perfect...No! But the residents were surrounded by people who cared and many were active in trying to better the conditions. The closing of this facility did not provide a better quality of life for the residents. At MTS they had peer groups and  a community of caregivers that not only monitored the residents treatment and safety but monitored  each other to decrease the incident of abusive that may take place.

I worked  2nd shift at MTS as a Mental Retardation Worker I from August 1983 to August 1986 at which point I was promoted to a MRW II working at the East Center Street Group Home in Manchester. I worked in most of the buidings on grounds including Knight Hospital. I would disagree with the writer above as for a majority of individuals with disabilities living in the community today enjoy better health and a quality of life that is far more enriching then the canteen at MTS. Thirty years later I work as a State Compliance Officer for the Massachusetts DDS. I agree that many of us provided the residents with the best care we could within an institutional environment. The challenge of this environment was working with the union bosses (at least my experience at MTS) that were mean and abusive, my goal was to work around them while trying to keep people safe.

I started in Willimantic Cottage as an MRW I, then served as a State School Instructor for one year when we took individuals from the cottage to implement teaching programs at the school, then my last year was supporting individuals in independent living (now the correctional facility).

My best memories of MTS was bringing people into the community and taking them on recreational trips. My most lasting memories are the times I was able to advocate on behalf of someone to prevent harm (like the Dr who was going to perfofm a procedure on a woman without anesthesia, I told them I would report them and that she needed to be sent to Windham Hospital).

There is one document that I have kept which I received on my first day of training at MTS which hangs on my office wall today,

"Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be, and he will become as he can and should be." by Goethe.

My expereince at MTS taught me the importance of compassion and care, while reinforcing my commitment to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and abuse prevention.

Hi, my friends and I went to the building next to the Langley(sp?) building and across from the prison today.  Took a lot of pictures in the basement, first floor, second floor, and attic.  There's green orbs in the attic pictures but not anywhere else, which is quite creepy and they can't be explained, and there's old greeting cards to the mental patients as well as patient files spread all over the attic floor. There were a lot of sounds, but we attributed most of it to the wind, and there were several cold spots.  Place has been vandalized a lot as well as used as storage, so wear face masks and tough boots as there is glass everywhere, and make sure to get in and out fast, there are active cops around.

Due to the findings in the pictures, we're not going back.
