Location Description:

The Devil Tree Oak Hammock Park is a local hangout for fishermen and boaters along the C24 Canal. On January 8th, 1973, long before the park was built, the deranged serial killer beat, raped, hung, then buried 2 girls beneath the "Devil Tree". Over the next few days he returned to commit lewd acts to the bodies. In January 1977, almost 4 years to the day that the murders were committed, two fishermen discovered the skeletal remains of the two bodies, and the hanging ropes were also found. Over the years people have reported hearing screaming, and seeing hooded figures walking around the woods. In 1993 an exorcism was held, and a cross was erected, after two boys claimed to have seen a Satanic ritual taking place near the tree, and being chased away by the Satanists who yelled that they wanted their blood. Before the park was built, they were going to cut down the tree, but their chainsaws kept malfunctioning in the area surrounding the tree. They tried to cut down the tree manually with a twoman saw, but the teeth of the saw broke off, so they left the tree where it was.
-----------------------------
When you walk down the trail it gets very cold. Weird noises come from the girls bathroom. It sounds like someone slamming the stall door. When you go in there no one will be there. Weird things appear in pictures.

I've tried to go see the tree, but we couldn't find the right trail to go see The Devil's Tree. We went to the oak trail we kept going in different direction's but we thought we found the tree but it wasn't the right one. Ohh well we'll find the tree sooner or later.

My husband and I recently found out about the tree. We went to the park looking and we thought we found it. We did more research and people are saying it is a different tree then what we thought. Yet there is no logic to the tree that people are saying it is. If anyone has any info or an insight about it e-mail me at gtpride304@hotmail.com...Thanks

I lived in that area and rode my motorcycle there all the time between 1986 and 1989, it was always scary back there and I was told somethings happen but never could the truth. Mostly my friends and I would get high there and move on. I hated back there just because it was freaky, weird how a park is there now. I wonder if the old foundation of the houses are still in the woods? I do remember a hole in the ground between the tree and the canal between two paths that was always muddy

Almost forgot, The tree is about 200 or 300 yards off of Leafy right after the little "S" turn in the road. don't know if the path is still there(89') or not, but as you go up the path it was on the right then an open field

We went and took alot of photos of this tree. In one of our zoomed photos of the upper branches we can see a speaker. We went back but cannot see that speaker from the ground. I think we just got lucky that it was caught in one of our photos. We plan to go back with binoculars to see if we can find it and see if it's hooked up. We did get some spikes on an EMF meter and some abnomalies in our photo's.

okay, ive been there many times, actually ive been there today, it is a little creepy, and it does get a little chilly, you will get lost, but the weird thing is, there are two trees, two seats next to the tree, and two crosses, on either tree, i dont get it, but all around it, are red ants, and people tell me there some stuff behind it, but i never actually went back and saw it myself, i took some pictures earlyier today, and saw nothing, but you can see the string hanging from the tree, go check it out, i promise you wont be disapointed.

TREASURE COAST HAUNTS OAK HAMMOCK PARK 1982 S.W. Villanova Road, Port St. Lucie (772) 878-2277 According to the book “Silent Scream” by Yvonne Mason, the bodies of Collette Goodenough and Barbara Ann Wilcox were discovered in 1977 along the C-24 canal at what is now Oak Hammock Park. The girls were killed by Gerard John Schaefer, a former Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputy believed to have killed about 30 women and girls in the 1960s and 1970s. Schaefer lured his victims in pairs and raped and killed one while the other watched before killing the second victim. He often buried the bodies below where he hung them. According to the book “Weird Florida,” by Charlie Carlson, the tree the two girls were hanged from is believed to be haunted and is called the Devil’s Tree because of allegations of people in dark, hooded capes performing rituals at night near the tree. Since then, so many people have reported seeing these hooded worshipers that a priest supposedly performed an exorcism on the tree in 1992. Mason believes the rumor of a Devil’s Tree at Oak Hammock Park was started by kids telling ghost stories after the two bodies were discovered. According to local folklore, chainsaws and any other chopping tools are rumored not to work around the tree. No one knows exactly where this tree is anymore — if it’s still there. The park’s bathrooms are believed to be haunted by the ghosts of the girls who died there. Visitors say the ghosts give off a cold chill and slam the doors of the bathroom stalls.

To get to the tree exactly, when u walk in to the park go through the gate and keep walking straight along the canal for about 5 minutes. You will come up to a path on ur left and walk down that trail. The trail will curve and you will come up to a big Oak tree on your left. That is the Devils Tree. If anyone has any questions just call me 772-497-4520 My name is Kia!

The trail with the devil tree is off of the canal, NOT the oak hammock loops though, its the actual TRAIL. If you go to the path past the gate along the canal, after a few minutes of walking youll find another trail to your right, its very open, go all the way to the end of that trail, and youll find a trail going into the woods to your right...just follow that trail and you should find it.Its a really big Oak tree, you can still visibally sorta see the cross(I went there yesterday :]) and there two small one person seats under it.When I went there, I didnt get any 'chills' or 'vibes' from the tree...there was just a really tired looking man in around his 40's walking his dog.He looked extreemely tired and has red circles around his eyes for some reason, and the rest of his was pale....idk.Anywho, I didnt see any fire ants either, maybe I the chill wasnt noticable because it was 35degrees out?Im not sure. And maybe the fire anys had died from the cold? Not sure.I didnt hear any noises either other than a pesky boxer that lives in a nearby house. ... :/ very disappointed about the trip.I plan to go out there another time when its dark out. XX Baii~

We've gotten a lot of EVP's from the park, not just the tree. EVP's saying "carcass" and "get out" and "bugs". We also heard one of the persons names that was on the walk. We also have pictures where there was nothing there but then on the picture there was ectoplasm swirling around the persons head that was in the picture. I personally have felt things during the day and have even gotten a few EVP's during the day... whatever or whoever is there likes to say "Get Out" on the recorder an awful lot! The directions are absolutely correct. Go down the path to the right that runs along the canal for about five minutes. You will come across a path on your left hand side. Take that and walk for a few minutes and the tree will be on the left side. It is large but you need to look on the sides so you can see where they tried to saw it down because you can see the marks and that way you will know you are at the correct tree. There is a gigantic tree off the Oak Trail that many people get confused and think is the Devil Tree... but it is not! I will tell you this... even though it is not the Devil Tree you most certainly do not want to go there and sit on the benches or just hang out at night because it is as creepy as the Devil Tree. We've also gotten some EVP's from this tree as well. Be careful and definately don't go alone because you will probably get spooked or scared. The dog barking and sometimes the kids you hear in the houses around the park will make you feel fine... that is until you get to the tree!

I lived near the area in 1981. Back then PSl was nothing but a bunch of cheap GDC roads and a few matchbox houses scattered about. I rode my small motorcycle around the mostly deserted backroads and came across what appeared to be a (grown over) truck path back through the woods off leafy road. I rode down the path and was amazed at the beauty of the oak and palm hammock. One area close to the canal was particularly interesting because it had a very large oak tree in the center of a mostly cleared area about a hundred feet or so in circumference. The tree was odd because of the red, upside down cross painted on it. There was trash here and there and some concrete foundations from what I assumed used to be structures of some sort. It was an interesting find and I went back there several more times to relax and look around. I never saw another person and never experienced any strange sensations or happenings. It was just a cool place. Years later I began hearing more stories and readings articles about the tree and the surrounding woods as the population grew. I've heard everything now about the murders, the satan worshipers, the exorcism (published in the local mullet wrap), the attempt and cutting it down (also published) and all the hype about this tree. Let me bring a little reality to all of you.....there is absolutely NOTHING menacing or demonic about this tree or this area. It is all in your minds and the minds of the people who want you to believe there is something more sinister at work here. Come back to planet earth people....there is NO SUCH THINGS AS SPOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use to to reside in PSL approx. 3 years ago. My son joshua and I were riding my bicycle to visit Oak Hammock Park. We went to swing area which was fenced in. joshua was playing in the Plastic house when all of sudden a breeze came through the area and made the chimes chatter. I phoned my wife to tell her where we were and she told me that this park was haunted. We stayed for alittle while then left. As we exited the park, we were approached by a boy riding a bicycle carrying a small booby board. we rode our bikes along side oneanother. He asked wher we lived and he said he was going to the beach. i didn't think about it then, but the beach was pretty far away fm where we were. As we approached the next intersection, my son and I turned left and the boy dissappeared. A couple of nights after that I heard knocking on my bathroom window which was located near my bedroom. When I went into the bathroom there was a shadow outside my window, then it would move away from it. I thought it was bizarre...copdad@mac.com

I used to live on Lennox St. which is just a few streets north west of the park. My husband and I used to visit the park and ride bikes through it quite often. I have taken quite a few photos of the tree and the rest of the park. This was aprx. 8 years ago but there are 2 things i will not forget. One, the chill I got around the tree. Some people might say this is due to the fact that it is a shaded area and there is going to be noticeable temp. difference.  But I don't believe that you can shiver and get goose bumps in the middle of a South FL summer. The other is one photo after having it developed ( yes developed not a digital photo, so nothing has been altered) the tree bark appeared to be bleeding red blood. This wasn't what I saw while taking the photo. I have been a skeptic but after visiting the Devil Tree i do believe there are some unexplainable things happening there. Otherwise it is a beautiful park espeacially for nature photographers. If you do visit please keep it clean and presentable for everyone. Don't vandalize or litter.

I've been there quite a few times with my friends at night in the past. This was in 2000 - 2002. I was definitly creeped out because of all the ghost stories. There was even an incident where my friends thought they'd be funny and the dropped a huge flashlight in front of me so I couldn't see them and they took off running. I was freaking out, but I didn't hear, see, or experience anything "ghostly". I'm not saying it's not haunted, but if anyone has any weird pictures I'd like to see them. I'm very curious if this is haunted or not.

Every time I ever went to the park I could never find the tree, but finally I did. I honestly didn't feel anything out of the ordinary. My friends and I did go behind the tree into the woods and found a rusty knife in the grass, which was kinda creepy. I think I'm going to go back again someday soon and see if I experience anything else.

im taken the time to write this because i can give you a fact to base your belifes on. i live on herder rd. if you google it , my house is about 3 blocks distance from oak.h.p, anyway .. since i found out about the devil tree {im not a psl native} ive made a hobbie of takeing people out to the park who know nothing about the devil tree...to watch there responce ... every time the same things happen.. n they get un easy at the same places.. also every time ive gone there or plan to go there it will rain. now the first tree off the canal path{ the second path youll come to walking along the canal not the "open area"} is where you will find what seems to be the concreate slab of an old house.. continue on that same path n youll come to the clearing where there are 3 main trees, the last one will have a cross cut into it... most likely from some head banger beer party back in the 80s... regardless of if you belive in ghosts or not,, something traumatic happend in this place . its creepy because the fact is people lost there life there in an awful way... that is fact...but now ill add to your fiction.. 2 nights ago my roomate felt we should go out there at night ... i said i wasent interested in finding out if it was haunted or not because the uncomfortable feeling i get from that place is enough to satisfy my curiocitys... as he made fun of me and the tree, he spoke about how there no sutch thing as the supernatural.. last night for what ever reason he had to go out to his car... in our driveway pertched on his motercycle was the white n black owl people have claimed to stalk them in the park. he tells me this mornen " man last night there was an owl on my bike, it sat there staren at me for like 2 min, i took a pic of it" .. ive never mentioned the owl to any of my friends when i tell the story because theres no real point..same as the hooded people .... it just seems foolish n people trying to spice up the story.... point of this is ...there are things we can explaine n things we cant... if you go to the park to find proof, you most likely will find nothing .... if your going for an expiriance.... you might get more than you want. j.x.hate

We are at the park now. Saw 3 trees, took some pictures and videos, plus we had a evp recorder running. The tree with the two benches is the one we believed to be the actual tree.

i went to the tree last weekend and was so terrified! it got really cold out of nowhere and something kept pulling my ear. when we walked up to the tree, we heard screams and crying girls. and then when we left, someone was following us. it was a very scary experience and rumor has it, if you touch the tree , you will die. i dont know if that is true, but i dont want to find out.

It's all a tall tale... my buddy lives right next to the area. the tree that is said to be the devil tree is not the devil tree. (the tree with the bench next to it is not it) there is no evidence of a hanging and the bodies were found 60 feet from the tree by some fishermen. we have been back there at night and during the day. it's all a scam to get people to visit the park. people throw parties out there now that's why you can't be at the park after sunset. so unless someone here has hard proof such as video and audio that has not been tampered with. then I will have to honestly let all of you know that the devils tree is nothing but an urban myth.

Whether the Devil Tree is haunted or not will remain up for debate for a long, long time.  But there were some really heinous murders committed there.   Is all the full around the Devil Tree pure urban legend?  I got to produce a video a year ago that goes into the history behind the haunting:  http://www.tcpalm.com/videos/detail/devil-tree/

I went to the Devils tree yesterday during the daytime and nothing paranormal happened. However, if you do plan to go back and see the tree please be careful. When you take the first left to get into the woods there is a tree on the left that has yellow tape around it. This is not the devils tree but it is infested with bees. I walked by the tree and saw a few bees flying around but they did not bother me. Still, please be careful if you go back there and do not bother the tree because you will probably get stung.

I have visited the tree before and did not see or hear anything. We did take photos and captured what seemed to be faces on the ground in two separate pictures. There is so much foliage, you can basically make out anything you want to see. The mind is a very powerfull thing. I am planning on going back and conducting a more thorough investigation.

The devil tree is not in the main area of the park. You have to walk east along the canal past the bathrooms and the gate. After a little while you will see a trail off to your left that is almost hidden but there is a sign saying it is a legitamate path. I was there about 8 months ago around 5:30 pm. The sun was starting to go down and as I walked down the path, I came across a tree about 50 to 75 yards down on the left. The tree had markings with spray paint and cuts which seemed to be a combination of saw and axe marks. I thought it would be neat to try to take some pictures with my phone. As I was snapping photos, the person I was with got my attention. He said I needed to look down the path toward the way we entered. When I looked, there was a very large racoon, which appeared to be about the size of a small dog! It just stared at us and didn't move. It turned and walked back into the woods. We left and didn't see it on the way out. I haven't been back since.

My name is Kevin Row i'm from Port St. Lucie Fl i'm currently 22yrs old serviong in the United States Marine Corps. When I was younger I use to go to Oak Hammock Park all the time and I have been to the "Devil's Tree". Everyone who says that there is a curse or that they knew someone who went missing when they went to the tree is wrong. Me and ll y friends use to go to the tree and spray paint it or go there to hangout but we have never seen or heard of any strange figures coming out of the woods and chasing us. Everyone who claims this is trying to get attention and that if they want proof that theres no curse you can email at hell_fire_1988@hotmail.com me or find me on myspace or facebook at the same email address. Sorry to ruin everuone's little fantasy about ghost and spirts that don't exist.

I've lived in P.S.L for thirteen years. Through the years my frinds and I on many occasions went to the woods to seek out the evil that may or may not lurk in the area. My friend said once that he found a skull placed on the forked bark of a palm tree. The skull was a size of a racoon but had two horns one on the top left and top right part of the skull. He said it looked like it was placed there by someone or something. He never touched the skull and left the woods.

In 2002 me and my friend took our bikes to the woods (before it was a park). We walked along the bank of the C-24 canal. As we got closer to the Devil Tree the wind picked up, the tempature dropped quite a few degrees and we heard someone or something say "help me,help me".We ran towards our bikes (consumed in fear) and made our way back home. Not more than 5mins later we saw head lights of some kind of truck (it was 1:00a.m at the time) but it was to dark to noticed the body of the vehicle. The truck then sped towards us. We then through our bikes in the woods and hid with them hoping that erie vehicle lost us.15mins afterwards I noticed the truck from a distance still only noticing the headlights we turned down a side street. Finally the horrific ride home was over.......so i thought. My friend went inside his house and i staied outside to smoke. Not more than 5mins the lot next to my friends house lit up with the same damn headlights the motor reving and the erie chill started to blanket my senses. I ran to get my friend to show him the truck. We started to get pissed. We both grabbed baseball bats to see what the hell this vehicle wanted with us. As we entered the lot we saw nothing. The following morning we walked back to the lot and found no tire tracks. We even asked neighbors if they had heard or seen anything. Nobody said that they seen or heard the noises we described.Either some punk kids wanted to scare the Hell out of us.Or it was some evil manifetstation that followed us from the hallowed grounds of the Devil Tree.

story to him and told him the story of the Martin County Deputy killing, raping and the  I truly believe the Devil is possed by some sort of evil power that has been set there from satanic cultists from the past. Since im still doing research about the history that go's beyond the 70's.Im gonna put my personal experiences in these next paragraphs below.

The year is 2010 in the month of April. I went to Oak Hammock park to exercise and noticed the park caretaker.I mentioned the Devil Treen hanging the two girls from a branch. He told me that i believed a false story and his "true" story was that they were shot at point blank range next to the tree. Something did not sound right to me.So i started to do my own digging. Every website i looked up and even people i know that has read the paper article has all agreed the story i believe to be true is. So the next day i went to the tree myself.                                                         The tree used to have a opening on the s.e. side of the tree where the outer core of the tree was exposed. (You can also notice the fine cuts and chips from axe's and sharp tools used on the tree but they looked like the same cuts from the malfunctioning chainsaw and axe's that were metioned in the story ive read. Also above i seen a branch that was cut down from many years ago. The exact same branch the two girls were hung off of.)Now there is some black cement adhesive that has been bonded to all the openings the tree had.Like if someone was trying to seal it.Seal what? Its a friggin tree who is gonna put a substance on a tree.Exactly! This aint no ordenary tree. It has evil power deep seeded in the roots and within the tree. Thats why someone seal up the open wounds of the tree.

Now sinced they sealed the tree ive noticed greenery growing from all over different parts of the tree.Since that seal has been placed there the cold drafts and wind picking up has stopped to a near end. Yet the caretaker says he has been taking care of the park for eleven years. i believe the city of P.S.L knows the truth about the tree along with the local churchs.

I've been to the Devil Tree on two occasions. Once at night, and then a few days later in the daytime. I've uploaded pictures so you can see the tree that I was told was the Devil Tree in the night and in the day. Clearly someone had a red rope hanging from one of the branches. Now, when we returned a few days later that rope was gone. Certainly that doesn't mean there are ghosts surrounding it, but it does mean that people visit it quite frequently. I'm not going to lie, it was definitely creepy to visit at night. A lot of it had to do with the fact that the park is closed after sundown, and considered private property. The area is also patrolled by the PSL PD. No one really wants to get arrested for going to look at a tree. If you're interested, the easiest way to get to the tree is from a back enterance to the park inside the neighborhood that the park is located in. I think it's fenced in, I don't remember. It's been a while. In any event, here are the pictures. Also, here's a link for a book by Sondra London and Gerard John Schaefer (The man who killed the girls at the tree) book: http://www.amazon.com/Killer-Fiction-G-J-Schaefer/dp/0922915431 photos: http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5017/294u.jpg http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6554/296d.jpg http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/5211/298w.jpg http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/7191/300g.jpg http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/984/297z.jpg

My life seemed so perfect. I had faith in god. Ever since ive been back to the tree my life has been cursed. My family is a bout to starve. No money is comming in. My family critisizes me for being in such of a rut. Ive praied to god many....many....many...times...My days seem to get more darker darker and darker.ITS TIME TO BELIEVE IN A NEW GOD. At least this god and i have something in common. We were both denied by this so-called savor known as jesus crist. I didnt want this. I wanted to have faith in the all mighty. But this so called life has slowly but surely sripped almost all that is good in me. I dont wish this agony upon my worst enemy........................................................fin.

Oak Hammock Park is a local hangout for fishermen and boaters along the C-24 Canal. On January 8th, 1973, long before the park was built, the deranged serial killer beat, raped, hung, then buried 2 girls beneath the “Devil Tree”.
A bit of research into this has shown us that this part of legend is actually untrue. Let’s start with the date. According to the legend, the murders took place on January 8th. The truth is that the victims, 19-year-old Iowa residents Collette Goodenough and Barbara Ann Wilcox, left Biloxi, Mississippi and began hitchiking to Florida around that time; however, an exact date of their death was never established. We can confirm that they disappeared between January 8th and January 15, 1973- when serial killer Gerard Schaefer was jailed for assaulting two other hitchikers, Pamela Sue Wells and Nancy Ellen Trotter.
Wells and Trotter managed to exact a narrow escape from Schaefer, who left them handcuffed and gagged, “balanced on tree roots with nooses around their necks, at risk of hanging if they slipped and fell.” Schaefer left the area and the two escaped, leading to the capture of Schaefer. You might find yourself wondering how we know he is tied to the remains of Goodenough and Wilcox. The answer was found in Schaefer’s mother’s home during a search- a passport, diary and book of poetry owned by Collette Goodenough and the drivers license of Barbara Wilcox. Because of this, we can reasonably assume that Schaefer murdered Goodenough and Wilcox, but the date of the murders would fall between January 8th and January 15th, most likely somewhere after the 8th as they would have had to hitched all the way to the Treasure Coast prior to him discovering them.
The next point that is made in this first section of the legend is that the women were hung from the Devil’s Tree and then buried beneath it. Both of these points are actually incorrect. According to newspaper articles discovered during our research, the remains were actually scattered in a palmetto thicket several hundred feet from the tree; additionally, there is this statement, taken from the same article:
“Former St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Detective Rick McIlwain, now an investigator for the State Attorney’s Office, said he found several pieces of the Iowa girls’ dismembered bodies at the base of a small tree off Leafy Road, about 300 feet from the oak.”

In January 1977, almost 4 years to the day that the murders were committed, two fishermen discovered the skeletal remains of the two bodies, and the hanging ropes were also found.
Yet again we can turn to eyewitness reports to debunk this portion of the legend. An article run by the Palm Beach Post in the 1990s, which focused on the history and fate of the Devil’s Tree, tells us:
“West Palm Beach resident XXXXXX, who found the Iowa girls’ bones when he was having a barbecue with friends off Leafy Road 16 years ago, was happy to hear the mighty oak will be spared and called it “one of the finest live oak specimens around.”
“Investigators believe Schaefer hanged his victims up with telephone wire in the smaller tree by kicking out an orange crate from beneath their feet. Wire and a crate were found near the small tree, which also may have been an oak, McIlwain said. Authorities removed a branch believed used in the murders and still have it in an evidence locker, sources said.”
As you can see, this pretty much decimates that section of the legend. However, the same article reveals something previously unknown about the Devil’s Tree:
“One of the inverted crosses was drawn by a friend with marital problems who committed suicide under the tree in 1983?

Over the years people have reported hearing screaming, and seeing hooded figures walking around the woods. In 1993 an exorcism was held, and a cross was erected, after two boys claimed to have seen a Satanic ritual taking place near the tree, and being chased away by the Satanists who yelled that they wanted their blood.
This rather astounding information has proven to be true. Again, from the article:
“After two children reported being chased by youths in black hoods off Leafy Road last weekend, XXXXXX and a group of pastors blessed the tree at neighbors’ urging Thursday and made plans to chop it down.”
This leads us into the remainder of the legend, which tells us:
Before the park was built, they were going to cut down the tree, but their chainsaws kept malfunctioning in the area surrounding the tree. They tried to cut down the tree manually with a two-man saw, but the teeth of the saw broke off, so they left the tree where it was.
We can not confirm or deny this portion of the legend at this time, but we did find this, again in the newspaper:
“Pastors gathered at a 150-year-old oak in Port St. Lucie Thursday and chanted, ‘ Demons be gone,’ to drive away the evil they say resided in the tree. The tree won a reprieve Friday when the owner decided not to cut it down.”
Whether that decision was based on a desire to preserve the tree or because the tree wouldn’t ‘allow’ itself to be cut down, we can’t say at this time.
