Description:
Closed in 1985 and left abandoned, homeless people used the Ovaltine Factory frequently for shelter.  There were also satanic rituals that took place in the corridors of the factory where small to medium animals were sacrificed.

People who went into this location described feelings of being watched and followed, encountered unexplainable cold spots, heard voices and cries that came from nowhere as well as voices that somehow knew their name.  Also reported are people who have had large piles of debris thrown at them violently with no natural explanation behind it.  Amateur ghost hunters who investigated often times had multiple batteries die on them which were brand new or fully charged.  Even people passing by on the Prairie Path (which borders the South side of the factory) talked about how they felt weird when passing by the factory almost as if someone was watching them.

In December 1997 the place was finally sold and later after being approved the location was revamped into the Lincoln At Ovaltine Court Apartments, which were completed in early 2003.

Reports from occupants living in the apartments include footsteps running on the roof, screams, flickering lights, and feelings of being watched (most common).  Also residents report doors they had known to of locked are later mysteriously somehow unlocked, their TV's turn on and off at will and even change channels (which could possibly be debunked as some kind of electrical interference).

Some report of sounds of moaning coming from somewhere in their room.  Noises are often heard that can't be accounted for (i.e. footsteps when no one is there).  Curtains are known to have moved/changed position on their own.  Objects are moved around in rooms in the middle of the night after residents specifically recall placing them in one location.  Lots report of strange drafts they can't find any explanation for.  Some animals such as Cats or Dogs act weird and don't feel comfortable in certain parts of the room.  Many who move in end up moving out after only a short amount of time.

After all the construction was completed the basement of the building remained closed and still is for unknown reasons.  The entity's may be the souls of workers who had died in the factory or people who had been struck and killed by the trains on Villa where the now Prairie Path was once a railway.

During its 14 years of being abandoned and without electricity people would often see lights through the windows, this could easily be debunked as possibly being the homeless burning fires for warmth or candles from satanic rituals or even people with flashlights in the factory searching for the entity's.

There is one ghost photo that was taken during the time this building was abandoned (1985-1999).  But this can also be debunked as being somebody in the factory or their shadow, as well as possibly being caused by cars driving by and having their headlights bounce of areas of the factory casting shadows.

I believe that this should be located under Villa Park and not Elmhurst. The factory is now called the Lincoln at Ovaltine Court apartments. At least according to some accounts activity still happens there. I`m curious about this posting claiming that it was a place for partying teens, squatters, and satanic rituals in the 60`s and 70`s. As near as I can tell the building was not abandon until 1986. Does anyone have more information? Perhaps someone from the area...

Today, childern and young teens know not of what they speak of, so many have asked me what it is like to be a satanist, yet, I know only to tell them to go join an "Occult" as one one say, for I am no satanist, but a religionist.

I prais not of satan, for his true name is Lucifer, I prais not a devel for he is a fallen angel, I prais not a demond, for he is a god of demons.

As for satanic ritual, all things can be led to satanic, as it can be led to that of a christian.

Thus has been a short rant as aked by a friend.

As a child, I used to live on 203 West Valet, Elmhurst, and recall being able to smell the chocolate from that factory when the wind was just right. Our family moved in winter, 1979. That said, it was still open sometime between 1970 and 1979.

You right demain, the memorable ovaltine factory was in Villa Park and closed in the mid 80's. I remember riding my bike past it and smelling that wonderful chocolate scent drift through the air. I also remember the stories of satanic cults that made it home sacrificing animals along with people in the '90s. And to be one of the dare devils that went to hang out and run wild through the rooms of such a scary place. The noises we heard the evil thoughts that ran through our heads. It remains a place of great memories of my friends and self. I actually have B/W pics of it in my living room.

The Ovaltine factory closed in 1988. I was a constant passerby through the 70's and 80's. It was "abandoned" for a period of a couple of years until the Village of Villa Park was able to construct a redevelopment plan in conjunction with Lincoln Properties. There were several incidents in and around the factory over the years including a couple of fatal industrial accidents and train vs. pedestrian on both the old Chicago, Aurora and Elgin interurban line and the Chicago Great Western rail line. As far as "satanic rituals", that rumor has been rampant along the Prairie Path (the old CA&E right-of-way)since the early 70's. Partiers used the Prairie Path and any kind of cover that was available to "party". That's the short history!

Never encountered anything out of the ordinary around there but spent many afternoons riding along the Prarie Path as a kid in the early 70s. That was when we would leave the house on Saturday morning and know to be home by dinner. Parents never worried. Now I know where my kids are every moment.

I currently live in the loft building of Lincoln at Ovaltine which is the original portion of the factory. I could hear a high pitched chirp coming from the loft directly above mine. It was the sound of a low battery warning in a smoke alarm. The chirp went on for 3 days before I went down to the office asking them if the female above me (whom I’ve never met) moved out because the chirp was getting annoying. They said the loft has been empty since the beginning of November. I told them I could hear someone in high heels walking across the concrete floors all the time. Their eyes got big and said we get reports just like that every once in a while! I really don’t believe in ghost but it is a little eerie to think about. Youtube “Ovaltine1991A”. There is a great video of the abandon Ovaltine factory prior to the renovation.

I lived in Villa Park from 1970 until 1990 and I unfortunately was not around for the "final destruction", but I do remember going to the butcher just across the street and that place had a really eerie feeling. It was like there was something there that shouldn't be. I'm trying to find more information on what exactly went on there. Also...anyone from Villa Park will probably remember the Raging Waters Water Park that was over by Oak Brook Terrace on that big hill (aka landfill). I remember going there and I found some really eerie photos of what it is now. Kinda creepy since I was a kid. Remember Kiddy Kingdom....that's gone too....Old Chicago...all that stuff...what the heck happened????

I was born and raised in Elmhurst, Illinois. I was in Junior High when Satanism became the new "it" topic of the American sensationalist media during late 1980's. The Ovaltine Factory in Villa Park, after it was closed and left abandoned in the mid 1980's, was a popular destination for juvenile delinquents and the homeless. And, according to local gossip, satanic rituals were performed in the dark coridors of the factory. It was also around this time that a student at York Community High School was arrested for stabbing a classmate with a small Swiss Army knife. The arrested student was involved in role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and he listened to heavy metal music, so the media portrayed the poor kid as some sort of deranged devotee of Satan. Then Geraldo Rivera got involved, mentioned the stabbings, and investigated the Ovaltine Factory on his television show. I remember watching the program when it aired. It was all very reminiscent of Geraldo's investigation of Al Capone's vault. The mustachioed idiot bravely skulking through the factory with a camera man, uncovering all of the occult secrets within. Fascinating, ridiculous, fun stuff! If anyone has any further knowledge of these events, please contact me! Matthew D. Garmager mdgarmager@gmail.com P.S. Kudos to the anonymous visitor who left the comments above that mention the water park on the hill along Route 83 and Dispensa's Kiddie Kingdom!

I have been a resident of the Ovaltine Factory since 7/7/2008. I have lived in the chicagoland area for only 3 years so my knowledge of the history is still growing. I knew nothing about the history of the Ovaltine Factory until the day me and my girlfriend moved in. There is a presence here, noises and the feeling of being watched. I was a skeptic for a long time but now I believe.

I remember the stabbing at York. they said he got out of the school in the tunnels. Then i went to york years later and found alot of those tunnels, great way to move around the school during class hours. Didnt that kid have REDRUM written on his jacket?
And yes the waterslides and kiddie kingdom were also great. The ride that went through the darkness with the muppets always scared the hell out of me.

I visited the factory several times in 1999. We had a great time when a couple of people in our group pretended to be possessed by ghosts that died there. Some of the group were in that alterna phaze and thought it was real. The last time we went there a bunch of us got arrested. Never saw real ghosts, or strange events happen. Only found 40 hours of community service.

I used to ride past the Ovaltine Factory on the prairie path quite often. One time i got off my bike an walked around the abandaned factory. I was always facinated with it, but since i was alone, did not want to go inside. It was eerie, however i did not hear any usual noises. Then there was the abandoned Maryknoll Seminary on Roosevelt Rd in Glen Ellyn. I sure wish i would have gotten in to that huge building before beind torn down.

There is still activity here at Ovaltine.  Reports of lights flickering, screams, footsteps running on the roof, and since being remodeled into luxury apartments the basement has still remained closed for unknown reasons.

I've gone their many times since the mid 90's and still go on some weekends.  I went last night and parked my car on the street next to it and let me tell you the place gives me the creeps, especially the roof for some reason.  I'm trying to gather all the information on I can on this place and and write an publish an article about it on my website.

There was a ghost picture taken of the windows that border the prairie path, but I can't locate it at the moment.

Here are some YouTube videos from when the place was abandoned (shot in 1991).

so i am looking for apts in villa park and came across an ad for the ovaltine factory, i grew up around here and remember it before the rehab, it was really creepy, one night a bunch of us went up there out of highschool, it was a freaky experience, we made it probably bout 20feet in the docking bay and got all freaked out cuz our flashlights blew out all 5 of em. when one of us lit a match, it was as if the doorway from where we entered disappeared, we all ran for the light and jumped out a window into some bushes, and booked it back to the car, i will never live there, its an evil, shadowed place.

BASEMENT IS STILL CLOSED OFF, WE WENT DOWN THERE THOUGH AND IT GAVE US THE MOST UNEASY FEELING AND WE SAW A WHITE LIGHT AND A SHADOW. ON ONE OF THE LEVELS THERE WAS AN UNLOCKED CLOSET AND WHEN WE OPENED IT IT WAS EMPTY WITH RED SPLATTERS EVERYWHERE AND A RED HANDPRINT SLIDING DOWN THE WALL. THE STAIRWELLS WERE THE CREEPIEST THOUGH. TOOK SOME PICTURES AND THERES A SEETHROUGH WHITE HANDPRINT IN ONE AND BLACK SHADOWS. OH YEA, MY PHONE DIED TOO. SOMETHING IS WAY OFF ABOUT THAT PLACE.

My boyfried lived in a loft in the original ovaltine building.  When we moved in together, we moved to a larger apt on the first level by the pool (still in the original building).  We did not live there long.  We both had feelings of something/someone watching us or being around the apt. We had objects misplaced that we were sure we did not move.  One of the bedrooms made us so uneasy that we never went into it.

My mom stayed at the apt one night while we were out of town and experienced some strange things as well.  What was really creepy is that I had not told her anything about what I had felt in the apt yet.  She was watching t.v. and the door to  one of the bedrooms (the one we never went into) kept shutting on its own.  This door is heavy with carpet under it and can not be shut by a breeze.  She was so freaked out and said she would never stay at our apt again.

We never had experiences in the upstairs loft. I believe the lower level apts may have more activity because of the access from the praire path.  When it was abandoned, kids, bums etc could enter in from the windows.  I was very happy to move out of there.  We only lived there for a couple months.

I lived down the the block from the Ovaltine factory from the middle 1950s until the late 1960s. The neighboring railroad tracks and the defunct Aurora/Elgin (now known as the Illinois Prairie Path) line were known for transients and criminal types, as well as Salt Creek. Admittedly, it was not an ideal residential community. We were all on the lower scale of national income levels and somewhat accustomed to what that implies. Additionally, a couple of the local neighborhood homes reportedly had ghostly spirits, though nothing of evil intent. The Ovaltine factory, at that time, did not have any reputation for satanic or poltergeist activities, at least to my knowledge. I actually have some good memories. My fondest memories of the factory are that there were piles of coal used for the furnances and deposited all about the surrounding property. As children, we reveled playing "Evel Knievel" as we jumped the large coal piles with our bicycles. Mom, however, was not so pleased!

I used to live in Villa Park up until a year ago. There's a park right across the Prairie Path from the factory. I remember as a little kid going there 'cause it was 2 blocks or so from my house. I also remember seeing things in the windows that look on the park... VP is a messed up place.

This place is haunted by the smell of a little cigarette smoke every now and then from my neighbors unit. And the sound of Chicago Great Western F units passing the plant on the mainline. Plus the ghostly images of a Chicago Aurora and Elgin interurban stopping at the station. I believe occultic rituals took place here but, GOD is more powerful than them.

I lived in one of the loft apartments in 2003. Aside from some loud neighbors who had a little bit too much fun on the weekends, it was a very pleasant experience.
