I regularly shop here. It is now an office/small shop building. I usually go because the Crystal Cave is here, not to mention a great mexican restaurant. Back in 2003, I actually was going down the halls of this place on the first floor. At the time, many of the shops inside were closed down, but all over the walls you will find old photographs from the early years of Claremont/Ontario (1880`s to 1930s). I walked by an closed store, which was empty save some paintcans and ladders. Out of the corner of my eye I saw an old woman sitting in a rocking chair, as I walked by. A few seconds later, I realized someone was in there, but I had to see if I was imagining it, I walked back to look throught the window and the chair was there, but no one was in it. If there was a real old woman sitting in it, she could not have gotten up that quickly and went out the back door w/out the door making a shutting sound.

It`s an interesting place, if you are interested in checking it out, I don`t know the address but it shares a parking lot with Buca Di Beppo and the Claremont Inn.

Update: In May of 2007 they began to renovate the building, 1/2 the building is going through this process. Many of the businesses have moved within the building.

Drove by yesterday and the whole place is fenced off and there is MASSIVE construction going on! Not sure where the stores relocated to but could see nothing but tractors and bulldozers. I do remember my friends from elementary school saying that a figurine in the Crystal Cave that looked like the Iron Maiden character would often move it`s head. Never saw it happen but more then a couple people saw the same thing.

The front half of the building is getting the renovation. If you park behind the school house you can get in through a side entrance near the playhouse/theater. Also you can get in through the restaurant.

I go down there a lot and @ one point I got clausterphobic @ Casa de Salsa so I stepped into the hall. It was creepy. I'm not a jumpy person but I felt like I was being watched. (This was on the first floor) I went up and down the hall but I was alone.

I was born near there in the 1950's and remember going there for dinner and shopping when it opened in the mid 1960's and then later going there as a teen. There is always a feeling of great saddness there, a feeling that something of sad or tragic happened there. Also there was a feeling that you were being watched when walking about the shopping area. Recently I was back touring my "old haunts" and saw that it was now under construction and wonder if the workers have had some feelings of depression, or being watched. As far as I know one of the Griswold daughters still teaches at Upland High School and might have some stories to tell.

I worked there at the Casa Ramon's Mexican Restaurant back in 1979-1981. The theater was active then also and one could enjoy dinner/theater on the weekends serviced by Ramon's. I was a bus boy and the owners would come in often. I saw no ghosts back then, but when I die, I wouldn't mind visiting there every now and again.

I was there today, and at one of the shops the owner and I saw someone walk by where were talking in the corner. Suddenly a crystal that was hanging on display was "flicked." I look over and see it moving from side-to-side wildly. The owner used her hand to stop it, and it kept moving on its own. The other crystals hanging were barely moving. I tried to find an air current, I tried shaking the display case, and I tried blowing on the crystals but I couldn't get the same effect. I especially could not explain the single crystal in the middle shaking the way it did or the flicking sound. She says it was just the ghost that's there. Go figure.

I can tell you that I woned a house in Pomona during the 70's, and my room mate became involved with the occult. Spent a lot of time at the Crystal Cave and a gal who worked there at the time told me he was very powerful in a psychic sense. During his stay at my house, strange things began to happen, one dream where I woke up bound and gagged especially frightened me. It took a number of minutes after I woke to become free. I eventually sold me house to remove myself from his influence, or whatever he'd brought with him. I am writing a memoir that includes that period and it still shakes me up to think of it. I always felt something at that place, but enjoyed the smorgasboard greatly.

A few years ago, I was at the restaurant having some margaritas with a buddy. To burn off some of the 'happy feeling', we decided to take a walk thru the shops. After  some time passed, I had to use the restroom. So, I went back to the restaurant. Once there, they told me that since I had left the restaurant I was no longer welcome to use their restroom. That was pretty scary.

I've never felt anything strange there. That Mexican restaurant is pretty good, though. There are stairs leading to an upper floor that are blocked off. I'd like to get a look around up there.

First of all I would like to say I am angry they renovated the way they did. I can also say for sure the spirit tenants are angry as well too. The place is occupied by the ghost of the school teacher who helped found the place. Before it was a high school it was an all ages school. The teacher use to borrow an orchard transport truck to pick up the kids who couldn't easily get to school. She loaded them in the truck until they were spilling out almost. She cared about her students to the point she gathered them to be educated. She is still there. So are some of the children who died as a result the great depression. I've seen her late in the morning at what is called dead time 1-4 in the morning. She will run up and get in your face. She made it clear to me that she was not happy with the changes and wished it to remain protected. She is the one slamming doors as well as the other bad spirits there. Because the witches coven is there, the negative spirit presence is overly apparent at dead time as well. She will be angry with the renovations. Nothing works there like it should and they can't keep tenants because of the haunting. They should have left well enough alone and preserved it instead of modernizing. This is historical site and big corporate America has done it again. The A/C, heating, and lighting will always have issues because the spirits are breaking it. Now if you don't believe this, get permission to hang out at 1AM. You will hear children playing, doors slamming and rattling violently. This is not a happy place. I have been going there since I was 5. I am 38 now. I am heart broken by the changes and so are the tortured tenants who can never leave. The great depression caused much pain for people of that time. This energy is locked in the building. So no matter how you paint it or rebuild. They will make your skin crawl until you go running out of there. It doesn't happen 24/7. But if you spend enough time there, this can happen in the middle of the day as well. Especially when you are alone. I've seen her several times and seen, also felt children tugging on my clothing. They play ball in the hall ways. I am all for progress. But somethings should be left alone. --------------------- David Hayes - raised in Ontario Ca. now living in Scottsdale Az.
