Location Description:

This is a turn of the 20th century mansion that has had more than its share of tragedy. Despite his wealth, Mr. Brown lost all of his children but one in childhood. In the basement, employees tell of hearing bowling balls striking pins where the alley used to be. In the 3rd story ballroom, cherry tobacco smoke can sometimes be smelled in the old smoking room, as well as partygoers being heard. A dashing man in a smoking jacket is sometimes seen upstairs as well.

I toured this when I was still in High School. The guide did mention the basement being haunted, but we never heard anything there. You did get an eerie feeling however. Upstairs you`ll find there is one room that belonged to a child that is haunted. It`s one of the sons who wanted to be a gymnist, but died when he was little. His room contains a couple of hooks in the ceiling used to attach a gym swing. I went back years later for a wedding on themain floor, but didn`t get that same eerie feeling as before.

People, people!  As one of the co-presidents of the Coffeyville Historical Society, I too have heard about stories of hauntings at the Brown Mansion.  We always tell visitors that some people have had experiences while others have not.  I myself have been present at many paranormal investigations and have my own personal opinions.  What I do want to say is that yes, the Browns had the tragedy of losing 4 of their 5 children (daughter Violet was the only surviving child and inherited the Mansion after the death of her parents in 1934), however, none of the children passed away in the house. (and none of the children wanted to be gymnasts either)  The Mansion is a lovely Georgian style home that was built by a prominent Coffeyville businessman for his family.  Construction began in 1898 and the home was finished in 1906.  If you are ever in the Coffeyville, KS area, it is worth the trip to come take a tour; the house is furnished with furniture purchased by the Brown family, and many personal items.
