Location Description:

LeHunt is an old abandoned cement plant outside of Independence, now in ruins. Also onsite is an old cemetery. The ruins are said to be haunted by the ghost of a worker who died there. There is also evidence that people have gathered there to perform some sort of magic rituals.

Cult members have been using the grounds for their practices for years. I was told once that this was an actually town, not just a cement plant, but I`m not sure if that part rings true or not.

I`ve been there many times, definatly one of my favorite Kansas Haunted locations. Just e-mail me for exact directions from Independence to the Concrete Factory. The old graveyard is just at the end of the road in front of the concrete factory.

Actually...there used to be cults that would go out there and others. This has ceased for many years. The roads have been blocked and a gate put up. You can enter on foot, but really who now days is going to make that hike? Everyone seems to miss the whole information of this town, and yes it was a town at one time. I`ve seen the same pictures over and over on all pages. Very little mention of the one cell jail that last I knew still stood. Or the ummm...well whore house just across the river. Or where the old fire station was. Is it haunted? There is definately an odd presence in that place. Then again...there were some odd happenings there as well....

The jail you mention was actually a storage shed for dynamite back when the cement plant was in operation. The house across the river was built by banker and co-owner of the cement plant George Guernsey. It was his "summer house", a place where the family would have parties and social gatherings. Definitely not a whore house! The cemetery is supposed to be haunted by a little Greek girl and her dog, who were buried outside the cemetery because of her ethnicity. Also, there was an actual murder around there about 10 or 15 years ago, which adds to the creepy atmosphere.

I remember the murder in the 90's one of our neigbors children was involved. They shot and killed another teen. Very sad.

A lot of interesting/new info that I did not know about. Doesn't surprise me that Independence would bury a child outside of the graveyard because of her ethnicity. The murder is new news to me as well. Joy Smith aka: ShyanMarie. http://www.theinsanewriter.blogspot.com

The Story of the worker rings true. The pick axe is said to be his and buried in the cement wall nearby where he died, as a memorial stone. Joy Smith

"Doesn't surprise me that Independence would bury a child outside of the graveyard because of her ethnicity."

Well . . . it wasn't Independencians, it was county farmers and residents.  The graveyard is regarded as a family cemetery (Murphy Cemetery).  The people buried there were mostly farmers who
owned and lived on or around Table Mound.  Maybe they're the ones who didn't like "foreigners".  But I agree, it's a despicable thing, if true.
As for the pickaxe and wheelbarrow  embedded  in
the wall, records of old-timers who were there then
indicate it was done just for the fun of it.  I'm skeptical about that, because why go to the time and trouble, plus  include the  word  or  initials
"BOARES"?   What's fun about that???  Seems like a memorial of some kind, but after researching around a little, I have not found what or who "BOARES" could be.

Forgot to add:  the murder happened in the 1990's - three young people were involved, 2 guys and a girl.
The one guy shot and killed the other guy.  Can't remember what it was about though. It happened up the hill on the road.  Last time I was there, the place was marked by a wreath by the side of the road.

The Wichita Eagle newspaper wrote an article about the town in the mid-70s. The story reported on the worker who was buried alive and the pick and ax marking the spot. The story also mentioned that the silent movie star Tom Mix lived there and was the local law enforcement officer.

You don't need permission. Legally you have every right to access to the cemetary there and can demand the gate be opened if you wish to drive (you wouldn't the road is horrid). I thought they had a sign saying who to call to pick up the key to do this.... I've been curious about Tom Mix. I know my grandfather used to refer to Tom as having been Sherrif of Le Hunt. But I am unclear as whether this was an official title, or if he was simply the gunslinger the cement factory hired to escort the payroll.... Anybody have any idea? Also, I wasn't aware of where the sherrifs office or jail would have been.

hung out there for years... but its slowly dissapearing into the new quarry... the town was mostly foundations (concrete) but it had a cool two story vault the miners blew open when the owners bailed back in the twenties... the elk's club is up on the top of the cliff overlooking to the north, stone lodge look, roof burned back in the fifties im told. the big buildings are losing there concrete floors to the trees, and there are wierd doors the are wide at the bottom and narrow at the top because they changed from wagons to trucks after the doors were poured, all the buildings are concrete. most roofs were gone in the seventies.

Last time I was there was about '97-'98. Very strange stuff there; compasses and digital clocks going wonky, and I'm a total skeptic. Saw the pick axe and shovel crossed in the foundation, quite spooky, but not as much so as other happenings. Oddly enough, there's a state park and recreational area just over the ridge. I was there with friends in '95 (at the ridge/state park area) and for some reason (I don't remember this, and no, I wasn't intoxicated) I took a running jump off the 5-story cliff. Woke up at the bottom broken and heard laughter. The fire rescue had to haul my stupid ass back up on a spineboard; broke lots of bones in my back and legs. I go back there once in a while as sort of a "f**k you, you didn't kill me" exercise, but I won't go near the edge. The "cult" markings on site seemed to me to be mostly fool kids screwing around. Definitely weird crap around there, though.

Of course there is magic performed there, if by "magic" you mean "a bunch of kids building a fire and getting drunk where their parents won't catch them". ;) I'm surprised that this location hasn't been set aside as some sort of historical landmark by now, and preserved and protected accordingly. It's kind of sad that it hasn't...

We used to go there quite a bit as kids/teens and look around. I always liked the place because of the eerie and paranormal feel to it. I even have had dreams about it as an adult, even lately. I so want to go back to the place, but there is that gate and I don't really want to walk all that way into the place. There is a long road to it and I don't remember how long it is. Maybe if we could start out earlier in the afternoon, on a nice day, it wouldn't be so bad. But I wanted to take my family there to see it. I grew up in Independence. I love the town. My parents and I went to LaHunt and had a picnic out there, took pictures. And once, with friends, I saw some burnt clothing in a pit with walls around it. I found that very odd and the place has such a feeling to it. I can't explain but it is eerie. I never saw devil worshippers or anything like that. That's silly. We didn't do that stuff out there, nor did I know of anyone that did. Mostly we all went out there as kids to scare each other. As a paranormal chick, I really want to go back and take photos. I just don't want to walk down that long, winding road. It was so scary!! The feeling you get on it....I still recall it. And that was DRIVING! And it's narrow, so you can't turn around just like that. The story we all knew was that the man in the cement wall was a worker that fell in during the building of it. I guess they didn't know til later and you can see his pick axe...and we have seen it. There might be a wheelbarrow too, I can't remember. Now, a friend that still lives there said that the reason it's closed off now, is because of a shooting a few years ago. A drug deal gone awry. It's out in the country, by the reservoir, so I can see that happening, being so far out and away from most people. Though, there IS a farm house RIGHT at the edge of the road to go in, so it's not like you can really sneak in. But then again, I was told they can't actually keep people out, because it's a public cemetery. And that's what I am counting on, when we go back someday to see it. I sure hope it's not all grown over completely by the time we get in there.

we went there a couple of weeks ago....we parked in front of a gate to a field.....it is about half a mile to a mile walk to the old cement plant.....there is sidewalk almost the whole way back....this is where i read that the town of Lehunt actually laid......we think the wierd things sticking out of the ground across from the plant are some kind of foundation for if it flooded....if not let me know......we didn't go venture into the plant....i had my kids with me....but what we did see was amazing....i heard a couple of wierd noises one i can't explain...and the other sounded like a metal door being slammed but no one else with me heard it.....i was ready to leave then....but my family wasn't.....never made it back to the cemetary.....fiance was scared the truck would be towed.....has anyone ever been towed from here......anyways we are planning a trip back when it gets a little cooler and the trees die some......we are going early in the morning as we plan on being there for a while to explore....anyone interested in joining can email me at www.myspace.com/laynalynn

For the past seven years i have heard stories about Lehunt from my wife. She grew up in the independence area and we would visit her parents regularly and i've been wanting to check it out for a while but we lived in wichita and she wouldnt go with me while we were visiting. We moved to the independence area a year ago and i'm only like five miles away , so a friend and I made it out there yesterday. We drove by the old Lehunt school house which is now a private residence and went on down by the gate. There is a no parking sign on the gate that says you can be towed at your expense. So we parked east of the gate on the edge of the road legally. We then hopped the fence and started walking towards the old smoke stack down the road. It was a good mile before we reached the ruins of the old concrete plant. We noticed some old foundations of buildings along the way on the edge of the road under the weeds and over-growth.We also had to cross a spillway and got our shoes wet but if we were more careful we could have avoided that. Once we finally reached the old plant we were impressed with how much of the old walls were still standing. We hiked through the overgrowth over to the base of the giant smoke stack and looked around the old factory. I didnt know where to look for the pickaxe that is a supposed memorial to the man who died at the plant.i also didnt know the location of the cemetery. We did hear a "humming" noise while we were their and couldnt locate the source, also there was a lot of writing and spray painting on the old walls for example "God told me to skin you alive" is one sample of writing found on the walls. The place is really eary and creepy. I can't wait to go back soon when all the greenery dies for the winter and the bugs are not a factor. Next time i'm hoisting a bicycle over the fence cuz the long walk sucks and i will also have a good camera. I took some pictures but only w/my phone. If anyone can tell me where to look for the pickaxe in the wall and the cemetery i would appreciate it.

I have found the memorial to the lost constuction worker that you were looking for. Its kind of a trick. Really all you are going to find on that is an odd chunk, more or less, of metal that is jutting out for one of the lower level walls. That is the wheel barrel that was imbedded int he wall along w/ the pick axe. So...there you have it. And if anyone is wanting a total history of not only cement plant, but the town too...go to the library and see if they have a book by Paul Harper called "Surely It Floweth With Milk and Honey" from 1988. It has a picture of the almost complated plant, a total history of how the plant came to be,and how the town came to and got its name. It is truly amazing the history of this modern day ghost town.I had to do a bit of research on it for a speech that I and giving in my college class. Just thought I would put the information out there for anyone who wanted to know more, but couldn't find.

oh...and ps to those trying to find the cemetery. It is 1/2 a mile north of the plant. Just keep walking on the road that takes you by there and you will eventually get to it. Also I will say that it is private property. So if you are going to go up there be careful. The guy doesn't like it when people go up there b/c they tend toleave trash and drawings on the walls and w/ the demenishing state of everything there...anything could happen. So out of respect don't just jump the fence and go...ask..or don't do it at all. Le Hunt is a great piece of Kansas history and we don't want it destoryed b/c people were being stupid. Thank You

What guy? Who owns it? I can understand someone not liking too many people there, but it's pretty closed off now - and I know the sheriff does check the gate, maybe daily. You can walk the long way around (the bike trail by the dam way over on the other side, but you still run into "No Trespassing" signs. Anyway, I'd ask permission if I knew who to ask!

Hello Readers. I visited LaHunt the other day. March 16th, 2009. Before this, I had not been to the old cement factory for nearly 15 years. As you have read, there is a gate. I spent roughly 3 hours in the woods, and when I returned my window had been broken out and my cell phone was gone. However, this was the only thing gone from my vehicle and I had several other valuable items in there. I did not get towed. A man came to me while I was cleaning the glass up and told me he was going to call my car in for a tow, and that I was forunate all I had was a broken window. I didn't find that funny at all. Anyhow, I wanted to say, that I also heard a loud sound that sounded like a metal door swinging, but there is no door to hear. My girlfriend was with me, and she heard the sound as well. We also heard large cracks that sounded like breaking timber , but we never saw any wildlife. I am a photographer and I usually try to find deer in the woods, and I usually do. Not on this day. I hid and waited for whatever was making the brush break to reveal itself, but it never did. I was silent for quite a while. We did go all the way to the top of the hill behind the factory, and the wheelbarrow is still there, as well as the shovel, but the axe is no longer in the wall. The name in the wall is BOARS, there is no E in the name, which is why you may not have found it. I saw what appeared to be a van parked in the forest, which it could not have been, but it was to far off for me to hike to it. Going to the top of the hill wore me out. Anyway, we went back down the hill, and continued on down the road to the cemetary. The earliest marked grave is 1910. All the others were prior to that date. Another odd thing about the cemetary, is a large number of the people there, are under the age of ten. One man was 26, and a couple of people in their sixties, but for the most part, all the graves are children. I had been in the cemetary several times before this, 15 years ago and it was a lot more scary back then. On one occasion, it was raining very hard, and we pulled thru the gates of the cemetary, and it was dry as a bone, like it had not rained in years. Other times, the wind has just been blowing, but not inside the cemetary. I see it has been a year since anyone posted to this, so if anyone is reading, you should go here. It is a shame that nothing is being done to preserve this land, and I intend to change that. I have several photographs that I took while I was there last week if anyone would care to see them. My email address is ImHereNoThanks2u@aol.com. Please email me if you would like to see them.

I have been out there several times. I have lived here all my life. The only really crazy thing I ever say was I old men in dark cloths digging in the grave yard. He never turned to look at us but stopped what he was doing and walked off into the woods and just dissappered. There use to be drawings of pentagrams in what is left of the old building where the pitch fork and wheelbarrel was and burnt bibles

amanda, I looked at the pics and thought at first maybe the glow was the moon but who knows? Weird, eh? My LaHunt story is this: I grew up in Independence and used to go running around Elk City Resevoir all summer long. As a naive kid we would go exploring around the LaHunt area and Cemetary. I went back after I had been out of Independence a while and my sister, nephew, and now husband jumped the fence and went exploring. It was so creepy. I kept looking behind me on the long walk to the concrete walls, I felt like someone was following us. Anyway, we stood very still (because I am a total chicken and was freakin out) and we thought we heard footsteps, but no one was there. We ended up high-tailin it outta there. That same weekend was when there was a shooting and a young man was killed. I was creeped out! OOOOOOHHHH, spooky! Anyway, it's a neat little part of history, wish we knew more.

My Great Grandfather worked at Lehunt and my Grandmother and Great Aunt went to school out there. As a teenager, and many other teen's will agree, we called it "The Usual". We'd go in off Peter Pan Road. It was the perfect place to party because you could see cars(parents perhaps) coming before they saw you. Plus it was a perfect place to ride horses! Lots of memories! :)

Went back recently during the daylight and found and interesting tunnel that looks almost like a mine shaft! Very scary!! I uploaded a video of it to Youtube. There's also a very BEAUTIFUL view from the top of a rock wall...if you feel like climbing.. It is breathtaking! You can see COMPLETELY over the intire town and just the top of the smokestack! The link to the video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZZ1BF_apDc And don't forget to check out my lehunt photos at: http://s597.photobucket.com/albums/tt52/017amanda/LeHunt/

After much research and study I finally visited the townsite today.  A very kind lady gave me permission to park near the gate on 5000 Road leading to the cement plant.  She said one of the neighbors, who lives adjacent to the gate, is stingy about people who traipse through the area (perhaps too many vandals?).  She also pointed out that the main road that runs past the plant and towards the cemetery is public access, so one is safe if they stay on the road.  I went north until I reached the point on the Elk River across from the Guernsey house.  There seemed to be the ruins of a brick bridge that crossed the river, but I can't be certain.

The path seemed to go much further, and I wonder if one could get to it by parking at the memorial overlook on the other side and hiking the trail to the northeast?  Has anyone tried getting to the plant besides the usual route?

I went several times about 13 yrs ago both during the day and night.  I went all over that area including the cemetary where my foot sank into one of the graves scared the living daylights out of me it was in the middle of the night I thought someone was grabbing me LOL.  There are alot of interesting things to see there and depending on what time you go it can be real spooky too.  Some of the farmers out there don't like people to be out there and will things on occasion to scare you like shooting shotguns to run you off so if you go be very careful.  I thought I saw things a couple of times, but it could have just been the night air.  I found it to be a very interesting place to visit and I once knew the area very well.

I heard a story about A science professor from the college here. I heard he lived out in the direction of lehunt and that he used to take the old road home but there was an attempt on his life starting with someone cutting his break line and he crashed into a tree at te first major turn. When he crashed he was pulled from his vehicle and beaten to with baseball bats witch was detirmined to be his cause of death.... Is this a true story?

My 2 uncles worked there many years ago. As a child I remember their stories and they used to live out there. And yes,it seem to be a wild and wooly time. They also talked of the connection of Tom Mix. When that plant closed they went on a family treck working as they went to California and then back to Independence. That would have been in the 1920's. I can remember driving there years ago to a cave or the big opening just off the road. Wow, what history is being overgrown. Too bad they can't preserve it like the "Little House on the Pairie Cabin." At least they didn't build a parking lot on it.

My family is from Coffeyville, Kansas (a few miles south of Independence). We used to go up to the cement factory when we visited in the summer in the late '60s and early '70s when I was a kid. It was cool place to explore. Haven't been there since then. The story I heard was that one of the workers died when the factory was being built by falling into a concrete form. I was told they didn't know exactly where, but his body was still trapped in the cement. We never saw any paranormal activity, but we always went in the daytime.

Where is this structure located relative to the plant ruins?  I've been to the area twice, and did not come across such a structure.  Is it further along the road behind the (former site of the) Guernsey House?

Reply to Kansasfox31 I'm afraid I don't know exactly where I was because I'm not familiar at all with the area, however, I did not see the plant ruins ,I did not know they were there at the time of my hike or I would have looked for them, so, maybe I was around the bend from the plant.  I thought it might be the "jail cell" mentioned, but if you have seen that on the plant site, and my pic is ont it, I guess that's the answer..thx

The plant ruins are fairly well visible on Google Earth and Bing.com maps.  It is located at roughly lat. 37.272, lon. -95.762.  I approached the site on a road which runs roughly southeast from the ruins.  There is a gate there, however, and to use that entrance requires making acquaintance with the neighbors, some of whom are very friendly.

Speaking of Elk City Lake, I've seen, on GE, what appear to be paths that run from the dam to the north and around the northern edge of Table Mound.  Would you be familiar with these?

Yes, I can see that path on GE from the lookout at the top of Table Mound Road.  I thought I might take that path again and go further south this time in order to check out the plant itself.

Mandalyn, how far up the trail did you go?  I take it the smokestack is still upright?  I haven't been down since August, which by that point the Guernsey House had been demolished.

The end of the trail where I began my trips is located on the eastern side of Table Mound, on Road 5000.  There's a gate, though public foot traffic is apparently permitted beyond.  Someone who lives in the area says it's safe to walk the road through the area, since it's government land.  Be aware that one of the neighbors, who lives near the gate, dislikes people who pass through.

Whether you want to go solo or with friends is up to you.  Either way it's a fun experience.  I'm hoping to go there again in the next month or so.

It's as the description above states.  The plant is near-century-old ruins.  There are few signs of equipment.  All that remains is crumbling infrastructure.  If you have an account, PM me for more details.

I just visited the site again, the first time in a couple years.  There are new trespassing signs along the road.  The first I encountered was when I approached the plant ruins from the southeast.  The owner line was hard to read, but it appears to have been placed there by or for Midwestern Mineral, which owns the quarry at the top of Table Mound.

The gate to the cemetery was shut when I visited, and there's a warning barrier just west of the cemetery entrance.  It does not appear official, and there's no indication of who put it there.

This is a bit strange.  I had a dream about LeHunt last night and I haven't though about that place in 20 years.  I dreamt I was lost out there and every time I tried to find my way out, I ended up back at that damn graveyard.  I decided to look it up today online and found this site.

I grew up in Indy and spent many nights as a teenager in the 80's walking around and 4-wheeling out there.  We all new the stories and there was always seemed to be strange noises and lights out there at night.  We would even see people moving around at times.  We had many unexplained encounters at LeHunt like cars going dead and things turning up missing like someone was taking them.  I still remember the odd feelings while standing in that damn graveyard.  Why were so many kids buried in it?  LeHunt could very well be haunted in my mind, and I'm not really a "believer".  Also could have just  been other teens playing tricks or the over active imagination of drunken teens as well.

Here is a good link to the history of the place.

http://www.abandonedok.com/united-kansas-portland-cement-company/

I haven't been back to the site in over 25 years, but would love to take one more look for old time sake.  Maybe a trip is in order for my entire class at the 30 year reunion!
