Location Description:

It is said to be a gateway to the afterlife. It is closed off and one risks an overnight stay in the Douglas county jail if they are caught trespassing. It is an old cemetery surrounding an abandoned church. Legend holds that any object thrown into the church regardless of what it is, you will never hear it hit the ground.
The church has since been torn down Stull is said to be one of the six gateways to hell. The devil had a child with a local witch. The witch was hung in a tree and the boy was killed. The tree that she was hung from fell over and opened a gateway to hell. Many stories say that a large group of people went out into the cemetery on Halloween and the next day they were found all slaughtered. Witnesses report a demon like creature watching them from the doorway of the abandoned church on the hill of the cemetery. Do not go in the cemetery. Many bad things could happen.

_______________________________________________________________
Where is the `Gateway` located?
This is from an e—mail posted on A Stull website

There are "stairs" that lead somewhere down. They are behind the church on the right side of the church if you are facing the church. They aren`t easy to find, however, because they are well covered by the grass that has grown on top of the lid that covers them. It is not easy to find them, it took a friend and I about 3 hours of snooping around. We came upon this about 6 years ago. If you really want to see or hear awful and weird stuff, if you can, try to campout behind the church for a night. Do this behind the church to avoid the patrol that do drive by there at night every hour or two. Take a flashlight and plenty of batteries, becacue you will have a ton of trouble keeping the flashlight working and it will go out a lot, trust me, I know.

*The above articles are unconfirmed.*

Note: The town of Stull has zero tolerance for people in the town cemetary after dark and they're wary of people in the cemetary during daylight. If you want to see the cemetary go during the day and be respectful, if you try to enter the cemetary after dark you will more likely encounter a pissed off resident or Douglas County Sheriff than a ghost.

I had heard that there is another lesser-known cemetary in the area (Stull) that is REALLY the gateway to hell. I have yet to check it out (if I can get in). Let you guys know what I find!

The original Stull cemetary is about five miles to the south of where the church is, down the road that takes you around Clinton lake (take a left just past the church towards the lake) and before you get to the turn off for Woodridge on your right is a dirt road, Just as you turn onto the dirt road is the entrance for the cemetary. It is on top of a little hill with two big pine type trees on top of it. The whole area around is field and very flat.

Have you been down there? Are you from the area? If you are, is there anything local going on as far as groups go?

The cemetery everyone goes to isn`t all that special as far as haunted places go. This seems like just an ordinary cemetery and I can understand the townsfolk getting perturbed about all the unwanted attention. I went to stull, and It ended up being a wasted trip. It`s a neat little cemetery, but we found nothing unusual/paranormal during our visit there. I`m going to chalk this one up to an urban legend.

I`ve heard stories about people encountering "debris" in the road, and coming to forks and obstructions that weren`t there on the way in. Rumors of people having a multitude of car problems when trying to leave the area. And just like the previous comment said, trouble with lights, flashlights and headlights (have yet to try with "deadlights") hmmm... either way.. happy halloween...

I`ve also heard, (this is most likely just "stupid bullshit" ) that the pope refused to fly (in an airplane, not with "superpope" powers) over stull, as well as the other various "gateways" to hell.. but... that`s probably a load of crap..

I have been there twice and was chased out once by some town folk and the other time there were to many cop sightings so I left, I will probably not try again because it is a long trip and waste of time.

My grandparents are buried in Stull and it a good portion of the cemetary belongs to my family. There is nothing paranormal about Stull, it is just another cemetary where people should respect the dead. I am offended by the second post above that says to "Have fun", my family has had to replace countless headstones because some drunk idiots were "having fun" at the cemetary. And for the record, there is nothing mysterious about the church being torn down like a lot of websites say. The owner of the property thought maybe interest in the urban legend would die down if the church was demolished.

I lived in Lawrence, right outside of Stull (Also in Douglas County). I heard many rumors of the Stull gateway to Hell, but never got a chance to check it out. I also heard the woods all around the area have paranormal activity... that something like will o'wisps is out there...that you will see blue lights flicking through the trees alongside the road. The story I heard about the stairs is that sometimes, when the gateway to hell is opened, you can go down the stairs..and you can keep going down, unable to find where they end... In the story I heard, a college student went down the stairs, only for a few minutes, then came back up..but it had only been a few minutes, for him... two weeks had passed in the outside world. I've heard that one, but it was been proven to be an urban legend a long time ago. It's just not the case, though it makes for a good story!

The throwing stuff at the church "legend" is inaccurate. It was said that if you go into the basement of the old church (since torn down) there is a old green glass bottle. if you throw it at any of the walls in the basement it just bounces off, and lands back in the middle of the floor, and stands up. a few miles outside of town there is supposedly an older cemetary, with Pines in the middle, and cypress trees that form a pentagram around the outer edges of the clearing. I have been there, as I have family in that area, and no I wont give directions. The people of Stull should have their WISHES RESPECTED to not bother the area, as they are trying to keep the vandalism down in this beautiful town.

The family lives two states away now and to be honest they are a little "off" and spooky at times but I love them dearly and they are good people. Tonight is the first I have ever heard of these rumors about this town and Im a little creeped out... Gonna have to ask them about it, provide a good laugh for the evening.

Neat trick considering that the church was demolished about 9 years before your visit and doesn't have windows anymore. I'm calling bullshit.

I've been truely interested about stull for many years and missed numerous chances to visit. It upsets but not suprises me that people have been disrespectfull to the graves and that the church was destroyed. I do plan on a visit at some point with lots of equiptment and will do my own true full scale investigation. I will not in anyway try to disrespect the dead or locals and will do my best to avoid them however, if I should encounter anyone stupid enough to try to run me out they will quickly discover I'm not the running type and that they would be alot better off going back the way they came, seriously, I dont play jumping into a den of hungry lions is safer than trying to run up on me or my men in an attempt to intimidate us. We will post our results when this is completed.

Drove by there not to long ago in the daytime. We couldn't even get in if we wanted, they had the entire thing including the entrances fenced up. *Maybe they hadn't open the gates yet or something*

Once, two summers ago, I drove through the graveyard and paused by the rumbles of the church. Nothing creepy happened. I felt weird, like I shouldn't be here but nothing more. The next day I wrecked my car. Ever since I went there I've been having nightmares about being possessed and have strange things happen to me. I went and got Chinese buffet and my total after tax was $6.66. A few days after that I cut my arm on a rose bush and it left a scar of an upside down cross on my arm. A few days following that I was told by a customer that I was the devil woman. Coincidence or not? Who knows.

It really is too bad that people have to go and vandailze the old cemetery. I've been to the place twice, one of those times actually going inside the fence while the gate was open. It was a bit creepy, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. I'd love to check it out again, and maybe explore the woods around the area.

I've been and it was a waste of gas. You can't [legally] get into the cemetary and the town is so small that any trespasser is going to be instantly recognized and reported to the authorities. The best you can do is stand awkwardly outside the fence and stare in.

I’ve been there several times. I live in Topeka and when I was in high school there were a couple of us that would skip school and go to different areas to check things out….just to see what they were about. There were several creepy things that happened on several of our adventures out there….though the surrounding cemeteries are creepier then Stull. I think it’s sad they tore it down because of its historical value. We went out there and at times had no issues at all, but a couple times, closer to evening, we were told we’d better leave unless we wanted to face trespassing charges….which is why we would skip school and go. Other then the couple times we were told to leave we NEVER see people in the town at all, no one out walking, tending to their yard, or anything…it’s kind of eerie.

I am planning on going to the cemetery sometime this summer with my girlfriend. I really hope something out of the normal happens because i live almost two hours away. And my truck gets eight mpg. So I will be frustrated if nothing happens and it was a waste of gas. But from what I have herd you got to go somewhere by a lake to get to the real cemetery. I will also never disrespect the loved ones of Stull.

I wouldn't bother wasting the gas if I were you. The place is an urban legend, nothing more. And the locals frown upon folks running around looking for ghosts, and the cops will for sure bust you.
