This affluent house sits upon a hill overlooking Echo Park. It resides a neighborhood called Hathaway Hills.

The story behind the house is that Charlie Chaplin used to own the house and sold it for whatever reason? In any case, a man moved in with his family. And soon after the house would lead to his and his family`s demise. He came home from work one afternoon and killed his mother, his wife and children.

People describe the house as a spooky and haunting location. Curious kids went to the house and saw the same Mercedes Benz crashed into the garage with "police tape" stuck to the side of the house and front porch. It has been reported that one can see a mirage of the grandmother and hear the children screaming.

There have been other reports of eerie sounds and sightings of wild animals, for example, a lion. Lastly, the house has a dark side and lighter side.

Today one can see a single window with a table lamp on shining noticeably. The house is an old Victorian style, also it looks like the Psycho house used in the actual film.

We were doing some research into this topic, as per a request. Sadly, It looks as though this is partially bunk. Chaplin has owned many mansions.

The mansion in Switzerland is where Chaplin spent his remaining years and died on Dec. 25 1977 of natural causes.

Swiss police were baffled this weekend by the discovery of the bodies of a hanged man and a decapitated woman at the Swiss estate that belongs to the family of silent movie star Charlie Chaplin.


So, the mansion which had the murder occur was in Switzerland, not in the USA. Chaplin had atleast 2 houses in this area. One at 1085 Summit Drive, Beverly Hills, and the other at 6147 Temple Hill Drive in hollywood hills. He had rented a third house, but I am not able to find an address as of yet.

I don`t know about the comment from the anonymous visitor, but I couldn`t possibly see the mansion from Duane st/2 on ramp. (see pictures), perhaps hes refering to the house that chaplin rented?

The Moorcroft manor is now for sale, for about 9 Mill.


So it seems that this story has some truth behind it, and some missunderstandings... A gruesome murder/suicide occured at his Switzerland mansion, but as of yet... I have not seen a single news story in any archive, about there being a murder at one of the California, USA locations.

I grew up in this neighborhood my whole life this house sits the largest and sticks out like a sore thumb overlooking the 2 freeway. If you stare at it two long and look and the freeway off ramp from Duane street there will be an accident off of it. I`ve seen it happen too many times to count growing up.

Chaplin lived in the house from 1919 to 1923. Mary Astor then moved in and lived there with her parents. There was never a murder or anything else particularly bizarre in the house and only two families lived in it until recently after the Astors sold the house at auction in the 1930s. It is named Moorcrest, and was recently restored. People seem to be confusing Chaplin's later homes with this one. He moved directly from Moorcrest to his Summit Drive home in Beverly Hills to be near his friends Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

there is also a house that i actually used to live in at 2405 holly drive that was most recently owned by marilyn manson. Charlie rented the house after Mary Astor and her loved (George S Kaufman) had a love affair in the house. Other noteable names include the rolling stones (they wrote the let it bleed album here) AND marilyn actually recorded his album "mechanical animals" at the house. I lived there for only THREE months, it was terrifying and so many things happened i cant even begin to explain. Doors and windows opened at all hours of the night, i hear voices in the spiral staircase, etc etc etc. I had three psychics come to the house and tell me that a man from the 30s was haunting it named wiliam, and he would really horrify the girls i lived with at the time. It was a terrible experience, but i still love that house. Go check it out! Someone else moved it.. but it wont be long before its vacant again. Mark my words.

Charlie Chaplin also owned a home in Woodland Hills. It was an english tudor style home with his dressing room in it. Also, there were two seperate bldgs. It was appox. 3'4 acre deep.
