ive been to the site and its true. you can really hear voices. when we went though, we parked beside the wreath that says floyd county rescue squad. you dont have to go to the shack... we went there at around 8:00 am and parked by the guard rail. you can hear voices, just by using your cell phone to video yourself asking questions. they answer most of the time. a little boy and an older boy can be heard. we asked if their stuck there and a little replied " im thinking im stuck here" they also answer to their names doris burtchett and james carey.

I am an American Red Cross volunteer who assisted the East KY flood victims in May 2009. I managed a shelter for displaced residents for ten days. One day an elderly man came into my shelter to pick up some cleaning supplies that we were distributing and showed me an old envelope that he carried in his wallet containing a tuft of hair. He said, "I don't show this to just anybody, but I want to show it to you because you look just like what I picture in my mind that my little sister would have looked like if she had survived the crash." I looked at the strands of dark hair as he gingerly held the envelope with two shaking hands. "What crash?" I asked. "The crash of '58", he said. "I was on that bus. When it went into the Big Sandy I grabbed her by the hair and tried to pull her out of the bus windshield as the bus floated down the river. I wouldn't let go. Her hair did. This is all I have left of her." The next day, I drove to Prestonsburg after researching the wreck on the internet and looked for the crash site. Two local residents wouldn't help me find it. They both said that the didn't want to be reminded of it and seemed offended that I had any interest in it. One of the men told me that if you go to the old concrete span bridge over the Big Sandy you can hear children playing.

I was in VanLear when it happened. I was just little but found a steel hook up a coal mine behind the house. I thought they might need it to help dredge for the children. I was about nine years old at the time.

My dad's family is from Prestonsburg. And had they (my dad, uncle and 2 aunts)not missed the bus that day, they would have been on it. My dad did'nt talk much about it, I believe he lost several friends in the crash. I intend to return to Prestonsburg one day, visit the crash site, and the old homestead.

That supposedly "haunted shack" was there in 1958. It is a county road workers tool shack. I know because I was there in March of 1958 and passed it several times. As a matter of fact the tracks of the school bus passed less than 10 feet from the shack. Had it hit that small storage building the bus would never have gone into the Levista Fork (Big Sandy) River. Shame on you people for using such a tragedy for your fantasies about the surreal!!

My grandmother told me she rode that bus and skipped school that day with her boyfriend. It just made me think how many people we truly lost other than the 27 that day. If my grandmother had rode that bus an something happen to her she wouldn't have her 8 children 21 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
