The Victorian
Gardner, Ma 01440

County: Worcester County
WebSite: www.free-press-release.com/news/200808/1218024274....

The former mansion (circa 1875) of chair manufacturer, S.K. Pierce in South Gardner has been "certified" haunted by six mediums and paranormal researchers. The spirits of a nineteen year old female servant from the late 19th Century, a man who perished in a fire at the house in 1963 and a little boy who often visited the mansion, but did not live there. Footsteps, Orbs, and Spirits in Shadow can often be heard and seen throughout the house's 26 rooms; and they seem to be there to protect the property. Unlike many other haunted places who's owners prefer privacy... The Victorian is open for tours. Most of the spirit activity takes place on the third floor; the former servants' quarters.

I live right around the corner from this house (corner of East Broadway [Rte. 2A] and Union Street, in South Gardner). The burial plots of the former owner and family members are in Greenbower Cemetery, right nearby. I always check out this house driving by. I noticed a scary rubber mask was propped up in one of the third-floor windows: HA, HA, HA. But you owners of this building, if you ever have tours...I would LOVE to check it out!

I live on west broadway and i heard that the yellow victorian is haunted as well as the school near it and the antique store near it. It is said that a family that lived in the yellow victorian were in contact with both the school since their child/children went there and the antique store because one of the family members worked there, so they haunt those places as well

Exit 21 off of Rte 2. Head toward the Shell gas station.. You'll pass a Cumberland farms on your left, an old brick school on your right, The Victorian is just down the road on the right. It's literally less than a half mile down from Exit 21. Its very easy to find. You get off the exit, and your on the road its on..

Hello & good evening, I'm currently the new home owner of the victorian mansion. since we purchased the home late last year we have been having odd things going on. such as objects moving in front of us (cups & a metal plant holder). The first week we bought the home we had placed an xmas ornament on the mantle left to go back to our apt. and found the ornament on the middle of floor (glass ornament didn't break) so we decided to just place it in the corner of the room with other xmas stuff we left & when we came back to the house we found it was back in the middle of the floor again// our neighbors have ? if we a have any young children staying at the house they notice at night a young boy running back & forth (problem is we don't have children) The piano did play one Sunday morning twice, our TV shuts off & turns on, Our dogs will not go towards the staircase at all even if we throw a toy/treat, they bark& growl up the staircase for no reason .//we have a door that slams going up the 3rd floor/in the basement shadows & footsteps are seen & heard. We also smell odd orders through out the house one order is in the master bedroom where it smells like a camp fire there was a man who back in 1963 who died there (spontaneous combustion) I recently did some research on the home and found out a woman was murdered there back when the house was a brothel. //Orbs in many of our pictures/ While working in my office late afternoon I saw a face that appeared in front of me which almost knocked me off my chair. (I actually got mad) I was later told a man had passed away in front of the pizza shop around the same time./ there is more but its late & I'm tired. //Eventually we will have tours again just as the previous owners did maybe around Halloween.

Immediate Release

July 18, 2008

OakView Preservation Incorporated, (OVPI), a 501(c)(3) public charity organized in July 2007 for historic preservation and fostering art and cultural events is hurriedly trying to raise $200,000 in loans, seed money, grants or donations in order to acquire, preserve and share the SK Pierce Mansion in Gardner also known as “The Victorian” which was the subject of the Sci-Fi Channel show “Ghost Hunters” and the BBC show “Dead Famous”. The mansion was a stopping place for New York elite as they traveled to New Hampshire and Vermont in the Gilded Age. The home hosted the likes of President Calvin Coolidge and P.T. Barnum.

OVPI is making a push to acquire the SK Pierce Mansion located at 4 West Broadway in Gardner, MA. The home is on the market and needs acquired by a preservation group to prevent declination of the home and to uplift the community and prevent declination of the area. Sylvester K. Pierce was the founder of the SK Pierce & Son Chair Company and benefactor of the town of Gardner, Massachusetts also known as “Chair City.” OVPI is defining the project as:

Acquire the home.

Accomplish modest renovation and then open the house as a museum with collected displays, and as an Art and Culture Center.

OVPI will work to strengthen artists and culture as an organization that will enable the artists to express cultural values and perspectives more powerfully. OVPI will display art from local artists, Massachusetts and New England Artists and National Artists as well. One immediate program will be to foster historic preservation and involving local schools is to ask the schools grades 7 - 10 to draw their "favorite" historic building. Each class will have their art displayed at the SK Pierce Mansion for one month. This will also get parents involved as well as peers and friends.

The building is zoned commercial/residential. OVPI will use the historic building for fund raising events, and within 6 months, event use such as wedding and baby showers, meetings, etc all supporting the cause of historic preservation of the home and fostering arts and culture of the New England area.

OVPI is actively soliciting seed money, loan, grant or donation funds which will allow for the immediate acquisition of the home and opening within three months of the museum and Art Center. Fundraising efforts will start immediately after acquisition.

OVPI is asking for $200,000 from any local business, private individual, or any other group that may wish to provide the seed money, loan, grant or donation. OVPI is driven to preserve our heritage displayed in the building that has stood the test of time for over 133 years. OVPI wishes to share this fine building with EVERYONE, and to have an outlet for the expression of ideas through art and culture. “We hope this will enrich the community by broadening access and involvement of diverse audiences through art and culture” Brad McCracken, CEO and co-founder of OVPI says.

The Sk Pierce Mansion is in a location that may also qualify for CDBG programs after acquisition (Community Development Block Grants). “Any seed money, loan, grant or donation will immediately help curb blight and will foster development for businesses and the community-as-a-whole,” McCracken continues. “Our work will concentrate on strengthening organizations , networks and movements for the arts and culture in Gardner and surrounding areas and will promote peaceful and just communities. We will seek to build vibrant, prosperous, safe and inclusive programs that involve the community and whole region.”

Opening the SK Pierce Mansion for art and culture will allow OVPI to emphasize equitable collaboration among all sectors in the community.

“Time is short. We must save this icon of Gardner’s history and Massachusetts history,” McCracken says. “Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law since OVPI is a 501(c)(3) public charity. If you care to help, you will move us in this direction.” Donations can be made to OVPI, PO Box 187, Norwood, MA 02062, or by calling McCracken directly at 508-631-3953 or toll free 1-866-760-2286.

TRUE STORY: Well, I went in for an anonymous tour a few weeks ago one night. Very awesome people there let me in. I don't know what made me so special because that house has so much prestige and whatnot and I'm sure they're used to curious visitors. I was going in expecting something. At first, the house felt very homey. Not what you would expect from a so called "haunted" house. Huge rooms and staircase leading up to the 2nd floor. The owner's neice gave me a tour, really cool teenager. =]  So I had a tour first of the 1st floor, very quick. Nice set-up. Big tv there. Anyway, we went up to the 2nd floor and it felt very cool and nippy up there. This is no b.s. I could've SWORE I saw something of a shadow heading into the master bedroom. The lights up there aren't so bright. We checked it out and this smell of somewhat of a fire burning or smoke was in the room. There's a story behind that room, not so clear on it. By that point, I was freaking out, but I don't know what told me to continue with the tour, because this is an awesome opportunity. We went up to the 3rd floor. It looks as if it's not finished yet. Going up, I felt something brush against my head, but it was unexplainable. Nothing there could've caused it. We went into a few rooms and everything seemed cool. Heading back downstairs, a huge clash happened in a back room. When we went to check it out, absolutely nothing was harmed or had fallen. Anything of that matter, but it did come from that room, but we checked out the other rooms just in case. I was freaking out. I also heard the sprits that roam there DO NOT like visitors. I could only imagine what happens to the people that live there. Soo we headed back downstairs and I felt a shove on my back. We ran down the 3rd floor stairs. That was it. I know this sounds like too much, but believe me, this DID happen. You can only experience things yourself to truley believe in the after life. Visit the mansion one weekend and see if they let you in too.

I believe everything you said. The owners are my uncle and aunt and the niece is my cousin. Last we were there during an investigation the master bedroom door opened by itself twice followed by a strange noise that wasnt made by someone or couldnt have been from the vents since they are not in use

For those of you who dont believe this place is haunted, You better start believing it. I even went to the school that's next to it. Mysterious things did happen. I really want to go for a tour in this house. After seeing all these storys. People sometime have the hypothesis that the ghost are trying to protect something. It could be very true, This house does have an old record. Some past resident could of hidden something in it so this way he/she could be guarding it and this is "unfinished bussiness". For the orbs you people may be seeing in photos, Make sure to check its not a type of dust because dust can be easily mistaken for orbs. Remember the eye can pull tricks on you, You may see what you want to see.

I drive by this house every time I go to walmart, one day my sister saw something in the window and started freaking out so we drove by again and saw it was only a mask. Afew weeks later I was driveing around with my friends and i pointed it out to them and they said it was creepy also but the next day it wasnt there in that side window when me and my dad went to walmart but it was rite at the very top window with a body witch i thought looked super fake and it was way scaryer when it was just peaking out.

I went here last night, didnt go in because there were no signs indicating they are still doing tours and if they arent they probably get enough people bothering them for one and didnt want to intrude.  I did however get a great shot of it with my camera.  If I find the stuff to upload from my phone I will post it

I use to live on So. Main St. and was always fascinated by that house. Never did get to go in. This was back in the mid to late 80's. Two of my children went to the school mentioned, before it closed down. I would love to visit that house/mansion. I'm still intrigued by it. The antique shop use to be a store. I think it was also a pharmacy? I lived on Union St. for a short time when I was very young. Back in the mid  50's. Anyone remember what the antique shop was back in the 50's?

Hello Everyone - I owned the Victorian from 2001 to 2008 and I am a very level headed - "show me the proof" - kind of woman - but I can tell you from personal experience that there is DEFINITELY a few sprits living in that house

1)  A servant girl from the late 1870's (she is in the census records of the time) she would brush my face and "sit" next to me when ever I was working on my needlework.

2) A young boy - who I personally have had contact with and have seen - he is dressed in a blue suit of about the turn of the century

3)  A man who did die in a fire in the 60's in the master bedroom (confirmed with the fire department) (the house was a bording house in the 60's and 70's)  he takes the form of a grey shape and has opened the door to the master bedroom for me.

Almost all the digital pictures taken in the house have orbs in them.

Things did get moved all the time - but I never saw anything floating thru the air.

The only time we smelled the burning smell was when there was a particular medium in the house and she told us that he wanted her out - so she left and didn't get invited back !  ( I have to admit I got a weird feeling from her too)

Over the years that we lived there we had many mediums, Ghost Hunter shows and media attention.  When the lights and cameras were rolling nothing ever happened.  It was when the house was calm and quiet that the spirits felt more comfortable to interact with us.

I have to admit I was a little freaked out by it at first but they never pushed us around or scared us in any way - just light touches and letting us see them once in a while.

Eventually I would just talk to them and ask them not to freak me out !  Sounds daft I know but when you live in a house that is haunted you have to realize that they were there before you and you have invaded their space, and they will probably be there long after you leave, so have some respect.

We did hear foot falls all the time, but I would walk around the house in the dark with out a worry - except for the 3rd floor, which really creaped me out - something not so friendly up there.  We would see a black cat up there all the time, we didn't own a black cat at that time, we later got one. ( a real one)

If the current owners do let you have a tour (we used to give tours all the time, I had a gift shop in the two front rooms - Torriander)  enjoy the history of the house and the incredible wood work and who knows, you too may be treated toseeing the spirts.

 Happy Halloween

Good Evening,

This is the current home owner of the Victorian (and prior to living here did NOT believe in spirits at all) since we moved in late April of 2009 after dealing with a few strange occurrences of activity that we could not explain including objects moving, whispering, loud banging’s on our master bedroom door and hearing voices calling our names, footsteps, slamming doors in the middle of the night, shadows, tapping, Phantom sounds & smells, scratching and loud crashes and bangs with no identifiable cause including seeing a full body apparition and our dogs are very sensitive and have growled and barked suddenly in the middle of the night. we than made a decision this past summer to speak with some of the best known Paranormal Researches trying to resolve our issues caused by unknown spirits.

We have had a few Psychics here that had interesting experiences about a Vortex located by the grand staircase just to the left of the lamp not sure exactly what it is about it but apparently you feel the sense of being on a ride, dizzyness I can only describe as a sea sick feeling. I did a bit of research and found

The American Indian cultures describe it as a portal where spirits travel from this world to the next and vise-a-versa. To some psychics it is a hole through a person, spirit or thing can pass into another dimension

Some of the evidence that has been captured so far with just a few investigations are Disembodied voices, tons of EVP’s some in foreign languages, footsteps, weird light streaking orbs, the sound of a woman moaning in pleasure (In the early 1900’s it was a brothel) mysterious floating light in the staircase, motion detectors have gone off numerous times, doors opening & closing, cameras moving, Ghost boxes going off “saying Ed-Win, Circus, Midgets (P.T Barnum  became good friends with SK Pierce) along with other great evidence.

Since allowing investigators psychics and mediums some of the claims have been dizziness, light headedness, a feeling of pressure on the chest, or nausea touched, the feeling of being watched, picked up on negative presence in a bedroom mostly the feeling of being choked & weight pressing down there chest. Mediums have also picked up on a woman was brutally raped and murdered when it was a brothel

The 3rd floor former servants' quarters gives me the heebie jeebies there is something up there that feels bad, There is stuff belonging to a past owner that give me the impression that strange documents about rituals including disturbing paintings.

There are a few psychics/mediums that can’t or will not to go up the 3rd floor

hello, I read your article on the Victorian. We spent almost 3 months going in and out of that house because we were going to buy it and put my barbershop in it as well as live in it. At the last minute we walked away from the sale because the house needs about 100,000. dollars worth of work just to make it sound again. At no time did we ever see anything that you could say was a spirit of any kind. Instead we bought another smaller version of the victorian on Lynde street and have had a ghosthunting team in our home and have the spirits voices on tape. We have three spirits, a girl, a man, and a woman. All have once lived in the home. Be carefull, if you dont have spirits and you keep bringing mediums in the home you are apt to awaken something you dont want to deal with. Please be carefull.

The house is located at 4 W Broadway in Gardner, MA.  You can not miss it.  It is haunted, several of our team members have been there many times. We also just completed an investigation there.  Just reviewing evidence and have found tons.

They give docent tours and do have opps for investigating.  YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. You can go to facebook and look up Haunted Victorian or Robyne Marie (who handles the tours and investigations).  The owners are super sweet people.

If you want to go to a place that is really haunted, this would be your spot.  We plan on going back in October 2011.  It will be a public ghost hunt and if you have an interest, you may join us.

I bought a Victorian on woodland ave that is "haunted". I prefer  to call it "blessed with spirits" because they are loving and playful ...Haunted to me referrs to more negative spirits.... I am also psychic and have been called on to rid homes of negative residents. This is not to be taken lightly or not believed.. it is all to real... please always protect yourselves and proceed with caution....

i just watched the rerun of this episode and the 'chicken' sound that was heard in the study sounded to me like a dog which would be consistant with the bone found

This is a pretty large house.  I studied the exterior pictures and those of the interior, but am left wondering where the second floor bathroom is.  I'm guessing it's at the back over the kitchen, but that would mean you would have to access it by way of a bedroom.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

According to Zillow the house sold in 2008 for $180,000. That's not a large mortgage at all...my fiance and I will happily buy it and fix it up. It's gorgeous inside.
