the abandoned Monson state
Upper Palmer Rd
Monson, Ma 01057

County: Hampden County
GPS: 42.1318059, -72.3346234
WebSite: None

its an old run down insane asylum, back in its days of operation many people were tortured...some even killed. when you go up there is a very eerie sensation and when standing outside of the buildings you can hear doors shutting, floors creaking and many other things that make it seem like the building is still in use. There are 3 main buildings and if you go at night be sure to bring a flashlight. Be wary of homeless folks though. The abandoned buildings are located across the street from the still active children`s institution. The buildings are old and run down and it is illegal to be there so if you should decide to visit be very careful.

I go there once a week to take photographs. I have never experienced anything people have reported about the place (no orbs, voices, doors slamming). The only thing to be afraid of if you visit there is nails sticking up from the floor!

This place is very scary. There is someone or something out in those woods. The abandoned buildings in the woods are very creepy. We heard alot of noises. It is a cool place to check out but watch out for cops and wild animals at night.

I went up to the old monson state yesterday during the day, its pretty cool, but its creepy even during the day, we found a few houses we went into one and it was all messed up in there, but i was told that alot of the houses where burnt down a couple years ago, but its still a pretty cool place to check out, but be careful, cuz its state property and if you get caught your gonna get arrested but im going back to check it out, i didnt hear anything no sounds in the house or doors slam, didnt see anything but it still was pretty neat

The buildings you are referring to are what made up the old "childrens colony," which obvioulsy is no longer active. the houses along that road used to be used to house the families of the doctors and head honchos that operated the developmental center. the buildings across the street are still in used as part of the (still operating) monson developmental center. during the old days, parents of mentally/physically disabled children were told to get rid of them, so children and adults born with such a disability were often sent to these institutions, while many were poorly run, Monson's was one of the better, while conditions were still not up to todays standards, there were no real documentations of abuse. I have a few close relatives who worked there, and they all are very adamant about clarifying such rumors, and for good reason.

This place isn't haunted, it is all urban legend and story meant to scare children. I visited recently and saw no apparitions, orbs, or really anything out of the ordinary. The buildings are in a very advanced stage of decay, I would honestly advise not entering them. Two of the three have collapsed roofs and have extensive fire damage. The floor collapses are pretty severe and the ceilings are falling down in all three. The development center was not a torture chamber as most describe it, it was an under-funded state hospital. There were no malicious labotomies performed here, and there was certainly no euthinizations. It was considered to be one of the best run state hospitals in Massachusetts, hence it is still open. This area is under video surveillance and is patrolled by the state police, local police and a private security company. Since it is considered grounds of the active development center, it is a free ride to state police headquarters.

In 1986, my uncle, Gary Maguire, disappeared from this institution without a trace. We didn't leave him abandoned either. We lived in Monson and we visited with him a lot. Just disappeared without a trace and extensive investigation - very suspicious.

I would love to hear more on this place. I have some friends that are looking for there relatives that were placed there many years ago and all they have found was they had a were named with a number and information of who they were, who there parents were and so forth is buried in records that people now are trying to uncover. I have also read that many people went missing from there never to be found.  There were many bones found on that property and there are so many acres of land that anyone with disabilities would get lost and become disoriented and they wouldn't know what to do to survive harsh weather condtions or even know where they were on those grounds as they were always watched by the staff.  I read  a case where a 8 year old boy Roger died there another case with Bejamin Ricci with the Belchertown State Hospital and all the crap that went on in there. There are to many coverups here and I haven't found where they buried those that did died there. Why won't they share the truth about this place? The Children's Colony comes to mind and Dr. Flood..I have been doing extensive research on this place as well as checking into the Massachusetts Archives in Boston for information..I don't know if you are still on this thread line and I guess I will have to wait and see if you replay back or anyone that may have information.

Yeah I really do think it's haunted. Some of my play practices are here and we always here laughing, screaming, and banging. Some people even see these shadow things out of the corner of their eyes. It's no lie, the place does have something there, I have proof.

You know what the weridest thing is, that ever other mental hospital me and my friends research, we can get info on the web on it. But when ever you try and research Monson State Hospital, Monson Insane Asylum, Monson Insane Hospital, or any combonation, you get nothing. Always dead links, it's like they are hiding something. Some friends and I, ever google earth the grounds on which it lyes on, and it almost seems as if they pathed the pictures with cutouts of trees. In one image if you closely, you can make out a partical image of a house. Yet when we google earth some other location on which they lye on, you can get prefect images. I know that it has some new tree groth around Monson State Hospital, but i know that the building are not all incased in the tree lines.

Well you can all be sure to know that the security on the place has been shut down. They are closing the hospital in another year or two. I personally have never been up there but I guess thats just because I'm too chicken. I've heard tons of stories about people seeing ghosts in the buildings even the ones they are currently using.

Have heard the stories, was up there twice in the mid to late 1980's. Saw a slime green built in pool, but nothing really noteable - saw old news papers, very, very little equipment, lots of peeling paint, broken windows and a few odd things like jars with no lids half full of goop. Those who say they saw stuff like, ripped up straight jackets, old blades, and finger nails on the ground, in 2009 have an over active imagination and are freaked for a month after watching a horror flick! Wake up and rational! I am not saying that strange and awful things didn't happen there, they did, just like at Belchertown, Northampton, Rutland and all other State Schools, Lunatic Asylums , Insane Asylums and the such. What I am saying is, try to disprove before running away screaming like a little school girl! Any who - for the question of "does anyone know how to get to it specifically?" I do - you can email me at where2go@verizon.net

bunch of morons just got arrested there trying to "ghost hunt" aka rob the developmental center. Obviously did not do their research on location of the abandoned property as opposed to the still functioning developmental center. (think if you're going to check out belchertown state school and you walk right into the tadgell primary school....not the smartest idea.) tread lightly if you're going up there for at least the next few months because they might increase patrols to protect the functioning portion from people like this. the kids were stealing things allegedly and caught a court case facing criminal trespassing and grand larceny charges. it's people like that, that give responsible urban explorers & paranormal investigators a bad rap, the ones who leave the places they visit as they were when they arrived without moving or taking anything.

if you're going to do urbex/ghost hunt, at least sit down, do the proper research, and learn how to do it safely, respectfully, investigate the proper abandoned/not functioning portions of buildings, and with least chance of providing the state with revenue made from arresting you! stay safe, and happy hunting.

My cousin, Mary, was a patient at Monson State Hospital in the 40's and 50's. I remember going there as a child to visit her. My aunt and uncle, Connie & Reo Battelli, were very involved with the children at the hospital. Eventually my aunt took Mary home because of the lack of care and her concerns about the treatment at the hospital. My cousin was consistenly over medicated to keep her quiet. If anyone remembers Ellie Mae or Martha I would appreciate hearing from them. Ellie Mae's mother was a patient at the hospital and was raped which resulted in her getting pregnant. Even though Ellie Mae was not mentally challenged she was not put up for adoption because of the chance that she was. Martha was left there by her family and they never visited her. Martha and Ellie Mae were part of my extended family and I loved them as much as I loved my cousin, Mary. Mary loved coffee!

I just went up to Monson a few nights ago, and all I've really accomplished is driving around where the in use developmental center is. All those "no trespassing - video monitoring" signs make me nervous. I just want to go look around, as I am an explorer who has no intention of vandalism, but I do not want to get arrested for passing those areas. Can anyone explain what those paths actually lead up to...and if there really is video monitoring? Everyone telling their stories of how they went up there..are you just risking it? Or is there something I'm missing here? I realize this is somewhat of an outdated post but I figured I'd try asking anyways.

Back in 1989 I photographed the old Monson State Hospital. I entered one of the three dormitories. I walked up one flight of stairs and began exploring room by room. After a short time I began to get a general feeling of uneasiness. I thought, or imagined I heard the fleeting sounds of floors creaking, doors slamming and distant voices. There was a heavy, brooding, malevolent feeling about the place. I heard a noise in one room and entered it expecting to find a rat or maybe a pigeon that flew in from the broken window. I looked around and noticed what appeared to be a large series of wooden storage nooks that took up the entire length of the room. I went to the broken window and looked out. The drop below to the ground was about 25 feet. Just as I turned around to leave a strong wind from the window blew the only door in the room shut. It was a very thick hardwood door with no handle on the inside and it was locked. I went back to the window and for a moment considered the possibility of jumping. I sat down in the center of the room, calmed myself down and began considering the alternatives. I looked up and noticed some notebooks in one of the storage nooks. I collected them up and began reading. They were handwritten daily reports, Dr.'s records, weights and measures, menses dates, clothing inventory, drug book, seizures book, temperature book and a record of visits.

I inspected the door and decided that I might be able to kick out one of the center panels. I sat down on the floor in front of the door and began kicking at it with both feet. It took me 20 minutes to finally splinter the center of the door and escape the room.
