Hawks Head cemetery
Van Buren, Mi 49055

County: Van Buren
WebSite: None

This is supposedly the burial ground for Al Capone's mistress by the name of Flora. Many people have seen an apparition of a female in a transparent like white dress. Before she is seen you will here chimes coming from the back of the cemetery, she will then appear somewhere the first two driveways. Also If you just drive by the cemetery, there is dim red light that will appear along side of the middle driveway. Commonly known as a ghostlight.

In trying to locate this cemetery, I`ve come up with interesting conflicting information, a lot of info lists the location as Van Buren County, yet others list the cemtery as being near Bellville, MI which is closer to Detroit in Wayne County! A third source says the cemtery is not in Van Buren but in nearby Allegan County! I will keep researching this and update as I find out more.

Corner of 107th and 71st. 3/4 mile east of Blue Star hwy. It is indeed in Allegan County about 3 miles north of the county line (Baseline road)

The more I look into this the more I`m convinced of either one of two things:

1. Hawks Head is a nickname for an existing cemetery, my research online finds no cemetery in Van Buren or Allegan Counties by the name of Hawks Head. Like Franklin Cemetery in Eau Claire which is better known as Frost cemetery, or Anderson Cemetery in Decatur which is better known as Morris Cemetery.

2. The place does not exist in either Van Buren or Allegan counties and somewhere along the line it got placed in either of those counties.

3. The place does not exist and is completely made up.

I`m hoping it`s #1 as it sounds like it`s a cool place if it does indeed exist.

I just spent some time looking for hawks head or hawkshead and no luck, maybe someone that knows if its real will come forward. I did learn there are 48 cemeteries listed for Van Buren County and some really awesome looking ones.
Rush is an Indian Cemetery with Indian Chiefs buried there. I saw a few i would love to check out.

There are tons of cool cemeteries in Van Buren county, only problem I see with this whole story is if it`s a local nickname it`ll be almost impossible to pin down where it`s at.

I suspect if it does exist it`s in the northern part of the county.

I remember my girlfriend's brother telling me about this place.  I'm not 100% but I think it's the cemetary where my grandparents are buried.  I'll confirm it and see.  I might have some directions to that cemetery.

its just outside the town of glenn, mi its southern allegan county, only stone i found with flora on it was a mid sized red granite stone, about 3/4 down center drive on left, not al's mistress, but the last name of the family buried behind it, might be others, but thats all i found, hard to tell if theres a "ghost light" new fire station across the street lights everything up like fort knox, didnt see anyone, or hear chimes, but im not a great believer in this stuff, i just like freakin myself out with creepy places.

What the one user posted is correct....the former Hawks Head Cemetery is now called McDowell Cemetery. 107th Avenue, Casco Township, Allegan County. Across the street from a fire station (they are the one who monitor the cemetery at night). My team has investigated the cemetery twice....not a thing.

Looking for assistance in finding a cemetery. Somewhere very near St. Stephen's Cemetery in Huron Township, Michigan (corner of Savage and Clark Rd), there is a smaller cemetery that actually has a sign put up the locals that says something about a dead woman buried there "who is believed to be the woman who haunts XXXXX house on the corner of XXXXX". I meant to go back one day last year and never could, now I don't know where it is. I have photos of St. Stephens, taken on that day, so I know it's around there somewhere. I don't know why the heck I didn't take any of the other one but there it is. ALSO, this same sign names another, older cemetery close by that also has some townsfolk buried there. Please write me at kirwan_art@yahoo.com (today is 4-5-10)

True story - not made up! Flora's grave is located at this cemetery - on the west end...You can find it by entering the cemetery through th west drive. & yes - this is THE Flora. To get there, you need to go to South Haven...Take Blue Star North to 107th, take a right...You will find it on the left...It is not Van Buren county - It is Allegan county... I'm no ghost hunter - no equipment - but if you really want to find out, do like I did and walk by the cemetery at night by yourself...You may not see her, but you'll definitely know she's there... As for those who think the story is made up - you obviously didn't grow up around here... She's a legend...Not just a ghost...But think about it - considering the heck she went through in life (who's mistress was she?!) Maybe she just wants a little rest...

It's called hawks head because that area was called Hawkshead back in the day. Either ghost town or just a Post Office was there? Yes, Mc Dowell is the name of the cemetery.

This is A true story, I grew up in this area on 102nd Ave in Grand Junction, which is in Allegan county.  Al also wanted to be buried in Michigan as well, but the community wouldn't allow it, even though he owned property here. The community was against it due to Alcapone being a ganster.

The cemetery is there and called McDowell. Locate directions on Findagrave.com but is in Allegan County and not Van Buren. Just an easy mistake as the county lines are so close there. The Hawkshead golf course is near by so probably why people refer to it as Hawkshead, but it's not. I have family buried there and have to admit that I've never felt anything untoward there. Just a small country cemetery on a quiet backroad. Flora is buried in the NW corner I believe, not sure about the Al Capone connection to her but she is there. Al Capone is a huge deal in the area but not much hard evidence as to if Flora was his gal or not. Everyone has a story of Capone in this area. It's just our thing.
