Loon Lake cemetery
Loon Lake, Mn 56472

County: Jackson
WebSite: None

The cemetery at Loon Lake, Minnesota is said to be haunted by the ghost of a witch that is buried there. You can find the cemetery on the Lake`s southeast shore. Turn into "Brown`s Campgrounds" they have signs directing you to it`s sight. It`s open during the day only!

This cemetery is actually rumored to be haunted by three witches that were buried there. One of the witches was known as Mary Jane and she apparently died 1881 when the people of Petersburg cut her head off. Mary Jane was also rumored to have supernatural powers. It is said that if you violate any of these witches resting places, that you will die an unnatural death.
The last burial that this cemetery saw was in 1926. It once held 67 headstones, but due to age and vandalism of curious seekers, only 18 remain. This cemetery lies within a very remote location just above the Iowa Border in Jackson County. It`s west of Petersburg and south of Lake Field.

Most of this story is true. However, one rather important fact that should be corrected is the name of the campground. It is actually Robertson park campground that you would enter in order to gain access to the cemetery. I was born and raised in that area and I have visited this cemetery many times, and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that YES, this cemetery is most definitely haunted. The actual grave of Mary Jane is difficult to find because her headstone was removed many years ago and placed in the Jackson Co. courthouse due to the threat of vandalism. The epitaph written on her headstone reads as follows. "Beware my friends, as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you must be. Prepare, therefore, to follow me." If you are looking for a good scare, I recommend visiting this haunted cemetery.

My group has done alot of research and investigations here. The records show Mary was not beheaded but died of diptheria in northern Iowa. Of all the evidence we have gathered at this cemetery, this is no reason for us to believe there is anything "negative" about it. To check some of the things we've found , go to primahq.com website

Can you possibly give me a date you went there? Trying to do a little research on deaths possibly caused by the cemetery?

How could they have stepped on her grave? Her tombstone was removed and the cemetery is so overgrown that you almost can't see the path. No one knows for sure where her grave was located and without the gravemarker, you wouldn't know for sure if you're stepping on it or not.

Beware...Your research wan less than a lot and not enough by far, cause'....It's not the witches alone that haunt the cemetery so dear, its the spirits from the lake that come north for their own. What was taken were scalps near 40 it's told, their daughter's and wives a total of four. With scalps on their belts they walked at their leisure and rested by the little lakes to the north when the butchering was done. Read the prose of Mr. Rose if you doubt what is told, for the history of the cemetery did not start with a spade...and there's more...

Please read the History of Jackson County Volume One, what's written on page 530 may prompt you to ask if you think she took the hangman's noose with her when she was buried in the cemetery so dear.

The cemetery is south of Lakefield, one word, not Lake Field.
