Location Description:

This cemetery surrounds two of the fenced walls of Woodlawn National Cemetery, but is much larger than the National. It is perhaps most well know as the final resting place of Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain, who was a part-time Elmira resident. Other notable graves at Woodlawn include: John W. Jones, director/producer Hal Roach and Ernie Davis. As with the National Cemetery, both are located directly across the road from where the Civil War prison camp used to be (now a residential area). Prisoners at the camp nicknamed it "Hellmira" and it was said to have been the worst prison camp in the North.

I have been to this cemetery several times and have recorded some good EVP. Two photo anomalies have also been captured at the cemetery. Figures walking around after the gates have been closed have been reported.

The Civil War prison camp was not across the street from the cemetery. It was located near the river on what is now Wisnor Ave. There is a memorial kiosk in front of the Elmira Water Board building there.
