Location Description:
Haunted OHS Theatre Department October 2006
History: The Owatonna Senior High School was originally built back in the 1920`s. Additions were added on the original building in the 1950`s and in the 2000`s. The auditorium is apart of the original 1920`s building and is where the haunting takes place. Above the stage, the lights, the travelers, valances, and the scriem are all held on several battons which used to be attached to a wooden grid from the 1920`s. As the years passed, the wooden grid started to become unsafe in certain areas. All of the sets from the plays and the musicals are built and ran by a student crew from the high school.
The Story: Late on a Friday night (around midnight) back in the 1970`s, the play crew was working to finish the set for the play. As the Crew began to close up for the night, a loner freshmen that was apart of the group had hid up on the wooden grid above the stage. When the lights in the auditorium were shut off and the rest of the Crew had left, the freshmen boy had carefully snuck down from the grid and turned the lights back on. He went and got some red paint and crawled back up onto the grid. The freshmen had a crush on a girl that was playing the lead in the play and since he was a loner, he didn`t really know how to tell her. So with his paint, he began to write a message up on the ceiling to tell this girl how he felt. However, half way through writing his message up on the ceiling, he had stepped on an unsafe part of the grid. He had fallen through the grid and fell two stories down onto the stage floor. He had hit the wooden stage with such an impact that he left a dent (the dent is located down stage left). The young man did not die right away, he had passed away from his injuries from the fall. He had many broken bones and had basically bled to death. After the accident that took his life, the wooden grid was taken down and a new system was put into place to help maintain the battons.
The Haunting: Since the freshmen boy did not die right away, one of his last quests in life was to finish writing his message to the girl he liked on the stage floor. It has been claimed that on the anniversary of his death at midnight, you can see the first half of his message on the ceiling and the second half written on the stage. Many people have had accounts of mysterious tapings on their shoulders and when they looked behind them, nobody was there. People also have claimed to feel cold spots on the stage and all around the auditorium. Black shadows have been seen in the light box up on the balcony when nobody was up there and some have reported feelings of uneasiness, or great sadness. Also, a few people have reported feeling anxious in the Spot boxes, especially in the left one. "orbs" or balls of light were also claimed to be seen up in the Curtain maintence box, but were easily explain away, due to glow tape being constantly used to mark the bottom of the box. The young man that had died that evening is not a dangerous or threatening spirit.
