Ok, I had heard alot about Henryton before, and I had been to Hell House before. I knew it was close to there so I did some research, and I found the address to it, where to park, what to do, where you had to walk and whatnot. Me and my friend Abi went up there I forget the month but it was right after we had that crazy snow and ice storm, so there was ice covered snow everywheree! But anyways, we parked and started up the railroad tracks because everything I had read said to go around back and not the front. So as we were walking down the tracks there was the normal stuff that is in a forest, there were a few deer and the river on the side was making all this noise and whatnot, nothing out of the ordinary. Once we got to the train tunnel is when we started to get a little scared, because around then we realized that we were two girls, going to an abandoned hospital place, in the middle of winter by ourselves, with just my camera and cell phone with us. But we kept going anyway. It started getting really creepy when we walked out of the other side of the tunnel, there was absolutly no noise, none...at all. There were birds hopping around on the hill next to the tracks but they werent chirping, nothing. We walked a little futher and saw the boiler room place, we just kinda looked in the door because we were crazy scared at that point, but we couldnt turn back, we went there to see Henryton and thats what we were gonna do. So we trecked up the hill (i recommend not to wear any other shoes but sneakers, we had clogs on, not a good idea) once there we were met by the white house. We figured it was probably for the grounds keeper of the place when it was in working order. I was snapping pictures every few mins because I wanted to get everything I could. My friend got mad at me because of it and we got into a little argument about it. Then we stopped arguing for a min, just long enough for my friend to see the word GANGSTER! written on the wall of the hospital building, then without a moments notice she screams GANGSTER at the top of her lungs. I wasnt worried about spirits, ghosts or anything like that becuase they have been a part of my life since I was a little girl. But I was worried because we were so along there, and I wasnt sure if we may have not been as alone as I thought. So I told her not to scream, if anyone was up there, I didnt want them to notice us up there. She got mad at me again and we got into another argument, right as I began to say "Abi please just listen to me!" A crash and a bang came out of the buildings top floor, I still have no idea what that could of been, but I didnt try and find out, I just kept walking away from that place. As we walked around the side of the building neither Abi or myself have any kind of urge to go into the buildings while so completely alone, but we came to a door that was broken around the side, at that moment Abi and I both felt a strong feeling like something was watching, and we had an amazingly strong urge to go inside the door. I got close, really really close, there was a door opened on the inside which said "KEEP CLOSED" and there was a set of stairs on the opposite side, but the other opened door made going inside seem even more inviting, but I snapped back into my scared mode and backed away from the door. I took a few pictures of that door, and in the picture there is a fog of some sort, between the opened door and the flight of stairs. It was not there while I was looking at the door, nor could it be my breath in the picture because it is clearly inside the building. But we left that door behind, but still felt we were watched, and we walked to the front of the building, a loud bang came from the building as we walked around, and while standing in the very front of it, one of the doors over top the main enterance slammed shut. But for some reason we kept walking around, still feeling watched, still scared, but curiosity got the best of us. We walked around the brick buildings and got to the very front brick building, which after going to Henryton 2 other times I found to be the gym, music rooms and a few other classrooms. But in this building there was a door on the side which seemed to be, sorta like a garage door. The snow and ice was slanted across it, but there were 4-wheeler tracks leading into the door, but not out. Which was weird because the way the snow was slanted it was hard for even a person on foot to walk in normally. But as I was trying to take a picture my friend Abi said my name loudly, I looked back, and she was like "what is that?!" there was a light from inside the building, moving across the small hallway i could see. We again got scared and walked to the very front, I took a video of the surroundings, on my digital camera. Abi and myself were silent except for my feet crunching on snow, and jacket shifting while I moved around. But when I replayed the video there was a noise on it that neither of us could of made, it was the sound an old time movie projector made when it was running, in the background. After this, we walked back to the back of the building and back down the hill, through the tunnel, and got into the car and left. When I got home I put the pictures I took but when I tried to put the video on my computer it wouldnt show up, but I heard the noise in the background. Even when I was home I felt like something was still watching me, I dont know why but I did, that place is creepy. And for some reason whenever I go somewhere like that, something always happens.
Its really weird.

I have been to Henryton Center. Although I went with like 12 other people, it was still something to experience. Two of the guys I went with had been there a couple of times. The railroad tracks walking up was honestly the scariest part because it was really pitch black (Thank goodness for flashlights). We all got surgical masks for the abestoes. We wandered through the main hospital building, into the auditorium where the floor had caved in, we wandered the halls, and actually started in what looked like the cafeteria because there was an old dishwasher.

We got to the roof of the main building and half of the people had seen a light in one of the wings of the building but I hadn`t seen anything. They thought it was someone else or another group of people, but I can honestly say I didnt hear anyone else or see any signs of anyone else.

After wandering through the different rooms and hallways and not hearing or seeing anything, we exit out the back and head to one of the back buildings, past the administrative building. It seemed to look like a house.

I can honestly say it was the scariest place I have ever been. It was HUGE, dark, dirty, run down and just had an overall creepy vibe. We didn`t encounter anything but that could have been from the amount of people we had with us.

i just went to henryton. i was on a staircase inside the building to go to the roof. i was the only one in the room. i started up and about half way i noticed the sound of footsteps behind me coming up the steps. i looked back and there was no one there. i also caught a ghost on my camera. just taking random pictures when i noticed a face peering through one of the windows. you could see right through the face to the wall behind it.

Firefighters respond to fire at abandoned Henryton Center in Marriottsville
by Charles Schelle | Staff Writer
E-mail this article \ Print this article

About 80 firefighters responded to an early Wednesday morning blaze at the abandoned Henryton Hospital Center in Marriottsville. Crews from Sykesville-Freedom Volunteer Fire Department and Howard and Baltimore counties responded at 4:15 a.m., and took more than three hours to control the fire that was started in the theater of the main building.
There are no reports of injuries to firefighters. The Henryton Hospital Center was a state-run hospital, similar in size and function of the original Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville. The state closed the property in 1985, and it has fallen in disrepair since.
It is located in a remote part of the Patapso Valley State Park in the Henryton area of Marriottsville. The property has been the scene of fires over the years, said Sgt. Bill Rehkopf, spokesman for Sykesville-Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department, in a press release. He said a passerby noticed smoke coming from the area, and called 911.
Residents have long said that the property is regularly broken into, and is a popular with youth to explore. Teens have documented their self-guided tours on YouTube. The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which has been classified as suspicious. No electricity serves the building. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the fire marshal at 888-214-7892.

I grew up around Henryton, Md. I am nearly 77 years old, but remember well walking to the boiler room of the Henryton Sanitarium every Sunday morning to get the Baltimore Sun Newspaper. The Hospital wasn't nearly as interesting to me as the tunnel was. Many times I have walked through that tunnel to Marriottsville. As a kid I did go into the Hospital with some of the kids around the area now and then and watch movies on Sat. night. Anyone could go in the theater for free.. Right north of the buildings was a graveyard. Many of the patients were poor and had no people, so they were buried right there on the grounds. Some have said the small burg was named after John Henry, The black steel-driving man. He is the one that beat the steam-drill through a tunnel. The problem is, tho, John Henry wasn't driving steel until the 1870's. The Henryton tunnel was built in 1850. Anyway, the thoughts of Henryton and Marriottsville and the tunnel brings back memories. I never knew about any ghostly stories in the 1940's as the sanitarium was in operation at that time. I don't live in Maryland anymore.......... That Hospital was always run down and dirty even in it's best days....Many Many people have died there. If I believed in ghosts, I would say that the anguish of the suffering sick ones with TB were crying out. I didn't go around the hospital very much as I was afraid of catching TB......Bill billyo@totacc.com

i live less then a mile away from henryton and i go there a lot. it is really creepy but also very interesting. i went there last weekend and the whole time my friend and i were in there, we kept hearing a loud banging noise. we never found out what it was. if we were on the top floor it would be below us and when we went down a flight it would be above us on the top floor. i am kinda bummed that the auditorium and cafeteria burned down.

i went there late one nite about two weeks after christmas with some people who were there on christmas nite andf sometime in between, the fire ooccured, but we went there and we parked in the hunter's parkinglot on the side of the rode by the gates and walked the 50 feet to the gate on the road. a lil sketchy but we had all smoked and drank a bit and with six or seven people, fuck it. so we went there and it was fucking scary. i and two other dudes heard a small girls voice on the fourth floor by the staircase in the main hospital. we were rally fucked up but the dudue knew his wat around the place. we walked down from the fifth floor all the way down to the clostrophobic and shitty basement. lol  the only way i could breathe in there was if i smoked a cig. we had to walk from one side to the other to ghet to the stairs leadiong uop to the roof and it was pitch black, especially in the basement where you're trapped. we got to the roof and it was amazing. we went back in and all the way back down. you can legally go there during the day, but not in, but im gonna anyway lol  makes sense to go there in the day when its legal than at nite cuz if its haunted it should still scare the shit out of you on a rai9ny day, plus rain dampens the asbestos so its easier to breathe. lol good spot, check out the enchanted forest tho you can do both in a nite and still get home by 2:30 to sleep :)

the enchanted forest is an old, abandoned little fiar located off of route40 (take mariottsvile road off of 99). i've been there with my friend, no cops come. security is very minimun. all you need to do is go past this fence and you're fine. it's creepy, sure. but nothing haunting of any sort unless you have a vivid imagination. there is no security at henryton. park all the way at the end of the road and go down to the river. walk across the river and go to the boiler building, there should be a pathway a little to the left of it. go up it and you'll easily see the building

Go from 695 to rt 40 towards ellicott city. When you exit you will go past rolling road, 29, and continue. Eventually you will come to a shopping center on your right, and it is at the end of that shopping center. It is right on rt 40 and I would imagine tough to get into.

no its really not hard to get into at all...and its not on rt 40 either. its on marriotsville rd. in marriotsville. ive always gone up 695 past security square mall. that turns into rt 70 towards fredrick. just follow 70 up and there will be an exit that says marriotsville rd. take it. keep right and go straight down. youll hit the rail road tracks...then you just park and walk.

I've lived in Eldersburg/Sykesville practically all my life but just went to Henryton for the first time tonight. I'm so close, though, and I will definitely go again. It was rainy tonight but a previous poster said that rain dampens the asbestos so whatever. I'll post a detailed account on my xanga (lol) xanga.com/dr_soom email me at thenightmoose@gmail.com for directions or to talk about the place

I went at night with 3 of my friends and i recomend that you take more people than that just incase. So im going again with more. anyways you park and walk on the railroad tracks about a mile then you go under a tunnel and you see a tower that is the boiler room then you turn right walk up the path and that is were the main facilitys are. I tried to act brave but in the end we got to scared. SO if it is your first time at one of these places ytou might want to go in the day and with a group of people. Also when you get out of the tunnel there is a homeless person and his tent to the right if you dont bother him you should be fine. And do not go up in the buildins because the floors are weak and could cave in also bring a surgical mask and clothes to throw away for the aspestoes. I will leave another comment tomorrow after i go back and explore the whole place. CW

Wow this place is definantly creepy being the scardy cat that i am we got there around 11. The train came as we got there definantly creepy. walk a great distance till you got to the tunnel and graffitiand it is creepy. after the tunnel little farther there is a homeless tent on the right. CREEPY> There is a big brick building and a white building next to it. Then there is a path straight ahead which i was too scared to walk through because there was few of us. And then you can keep walking down the rail road tracks to find more but i didnt. Too scared with the few people i have. But this doesnt sound that creepy but it was the scariest thing ive ever done and definantly worth the trip down and the scare you get out of it.

Hey, I'm working for this website, Eldersubrg.net, you can check it out, and since there was a recent break in at Henryton, my boss wants me to write a feature story about the place too. If any of you are willing to be interviewed about it, or know someone who would, please e mail info@eldersburg.net Thanks.

I have been to Henryton several times and it is definately worth it. It is very creepy and yes the basement is like the porthole to hell, if you ask me. There is one room down in the basement that has dirt piled in it with a heavy wooden door baring it. It the middle of the dirt, the last time I went, was a perfect dug out "rectangle" as if for a grave and you could tell it was freshly dug. You definately need flashlights in these buildings, day or night. Especially if you go to the basement. There is a air of sadness and loneliness and even though I haven't physically seen anything myself, I do believe the place is haunted. You can feel it, like stated, like someone is constantly following you or watching you. The eerie thing is too, that when you run into another group of people, even though they may be making a lot of noise and hooting and hollering and such, you never hear them until you get right up on them. It's a shock when you run into another group. I have only been during the day and am building my guts to do a nighttime explore around Halloween. My son, who is 18, has been out there a lot with friends at night and two of his friends have stated that they have been pushed from behind when no one is behind them. I'll report back when I go at night. Anyone who wants to can e-mail me at pkv3518@hotmail.com

Yea i just went there today, me my brother and three other friends. The security there is not present, there is a juvinile detention place or something very close to the hospital we parked off a dirt road roundabout near the woods. As for going into the hospital tho, we did not make it. As we approached the place my friend started shaking and then another one of my friends started talking about feeling a woman's presence and then we were able to see the actual building. The two girls started freaking, the one feeling the presence sensing more and more people were coming. We then turned around with the girls clutching for lives it seemed. They also swore they heard a man moaning and screaming, as for me, i heard a dog barking, this really intrigued me but the girls were too scared so the guys agreed to go again another time with just the guys. Also the one girl when we were leaving said that her name was annie if anyone's heard anything if so great

Well i went there about three weeks ago.I went with a group of five people. As for security there is none,But if the cops come you better bolt from what i ve heard the cops use it during the day to do drills.Well my group and i checked out just about every building there except the little house behind the hospital itself. But my friend TJ and i both heard the banging noise that some of you other people have heard also.As for the little girl we never heard that. But i had and really bad feeling around room 205 from what i understand i dont know if its credible but i heard that a homeless man was killed during a police training exercise.I returned home the next morning and the next night i had a dream in real good detail of a man dying in that room i had the dream for atleast five days before it stopped. But im hoping to return to the hospital for some answers. Hope it sheds some light for some other groups too.

ok...so i dont know where all this stuff is coming from about a man moaning and whatnot, most likely some other people up at henryton just trying to scare other people that come. i know me and my friends while up there did some moaning and screaming just to freak people out. but a dog barking makes sense people live around there. but as far as a man moaning and a girl saying her name is annie? thats just random and rediculous. but just so everyone is clear on what henryton is...is was an old tuberculosis saniterium for black people back when everything was still segregated. yeah its amazingly creepy and you could get some crazy feelings up there and whatnot...but it wasnt haunted like alot of people are making it out to be...this is just your run of the mill saniterium, it was to keep the people with tuberculosis out of the way and quarentined from the rest of society until they were fit to be released.

I am going there tonight. My first trip there ever. I have friends that had previously went and came back with great stories, so I figured tonight would be a great night to explore. Its about 55 degrees out, with heavy down pours. Seems like the perfect setting. I'm a trill seeker when it comes to paranormal hunting and other adventures, so barring no cops, I will enjoy tonight very well. Hopefully. If anyone has any info. on getting to the actual buildings once I get there. Like the tracks and pathways, it would be greatly aprreciated.

A friend and i had went there about a year or so ago...it was creepy as hell..but nothing out of the ordinary, except a dead cat that had have been dead for a long time he was like nothing but bone. Never heard any weird noises, it was only the two of us and it was at night..i wouldnt recommend going up there just because cops know that kids go up there, and believe me they arent the nicest cops...they wont let you go with a warning. But i would still go up there just cause i like getting the creepy adrenaline rush. Also just infront of henryton there is a few more abandoned buildings that look like brick houses....dont know if anyone knows what im talking about but if you see them def. check em out. They are just as equally weird...

I went there over this summer and there is no way in hell i am ever going back. the "hauntings" were the least of my concern. I was more freaked out about the man dragging a trunk across the railroad tracks down to the river. I was more freaked out when he saw me and i was just relieved to run away and end up on henryton campus just to get away from him. Um, it was like 8 at night, still fairly bright in the summer, and i got arrested and everything by the cops. i however, did get off with a warning after the dude changed his mind because he was too busy looking for a murderer or something more important. so my friend and i went running away as fast as we could, only to find the cops waiting by our car, but they told us, its ok, they weren't going to take us, they just wanted to make sure we got back alive. i was like fine whatever, and it wasn't till the next day i learned about the whole police search thing all over sykesville rr tracks. then i was flipping cuz i was like, oops, i forgot to tell them i saw the bad guy... oops. never ever going back. ever.

Beware of cops (State of Maryland Natural Resources Police), the railroad tracks parking lot (to walk the tracks to henryton) has been compromised, the henryton rd entrance is not connected and will involve crossing the river.

i went up there last night with my brother his fiance her mother and three friends. there were seven of us all together. at first nothing scary happened, but in the main building some of the guys were joking around and calling out asking if there were any spirits there to make noise. after we left the main building we heard repetitive noise as if all the doors were closing. my brothers fiance also swears something hit her in the face. while nothing else scary really happened, this place is creepy and gives me a bad feeling. its worth being checked out.

I went to henryton in september..it was five of my friends, and myself..it was very dark and around 50 degress! ..but yeah, when we all arrived at the place..which was the scariest thing my eyes thought it would only see in horror films....I REALLY started to get a feeling like we shouldn't had been there for some odd reason. As we were still near the train tracks; the first building had steps, with no door, and even though it was dark, you could still see inside. My so "curious" friend of mine, was so curiousss to go in!! (let me remind you all). It was my frist time and including four of us. Long story short; I saw this long green, tall bush i believe.....it wasn't a tree! it was just a tall green clover looking thing. I saw it move as if it was a goblin; it shocked so fast! and it took me by surprise and scared me because no one else witnessed it! so i ran back to the tracks and said we should leave! ..so they said for me to chill, because we came too far. I went along with it and didn't want to look at that tall bush clover thing! ...so as we were moving on i looked in the building and i could've SWORN! on EVERYTHING! i saw something move inside; can't make out what the HELL! it was. and I don't want to keep thinking about what it was. After that, of course i ran back and screamed and we all left because another friend of mine thought he saw something too and freaked out so we started to walk off fast..as we were walkin as fast as we could to the tracks! we felt like running! and as we were running! my friend tim and i heard a voice scream from the building said; HEYYY!! as if we were being called by someone...it was a strong voice like a cry hey! from a older man. Almost a demanding for us to come back. That was my experience and i still don't know where that voice came from nor what the shaking of the tree was either.

Just got back from henryton sanitarium and this place is no question haunted. Me and 4 friends went up there around 11am bc we were all to scared to get hurt at night there bc of the uneven and unsturty floors. Regardless of what time you go...the place still spooks u out. It reminded me of some horror movie. I wish there wasn't so much spray paint everywhere. This is a historical place for people to enjoy not somewhere for teenagers to trash! Anyways. I was looking down this dark hallway in the school house anfd kept hearing a child laughing. Then a shadow passed over the hallway and I decided to check it out. There was nothing. Allso we hear screaming loud enough for all 5 of us to hear coming from the main white building. This place was no joke. For some reason the building with the sunken ceiling was calling out to me. Unfortunately no one wanted to explore that one. This place is definetly haunted. Just be careful of staying that place too long bc u will feel ill from the abestos. I wish more had happend but all and all I was def impressed

The person who went on 11/16/2008, me and four of my friends were there as well...we heard the exact same stuff, the slamming doors, when the wind wasnt blowing, the laughing little girl. I was actually standing outside with my guy friend and he an I were talking and all the sudden one of the porcelain toilets was thrown off of the top of the building. and our friends were on the bottom floor. People are saying that the litte girl who said her name was "Annie" isnt real??? Umm that is completely is false, that is completely true, me and my fiance have it on tape. We would walk through all the buildings asking if anyone was there and someone said, "My name is Annie." and we would hear her laughing and then we could hear the shuffling of feet, when we would look down both sides of the hallway and nobody in our group was moving. This is a good spot to do some ghost hunting, but i would seriously reccommend walking. you have to find a parking area to where you do not have to walk in the creek. but you guys would like it if thrill is your thing...i love the adrenaline rush, oh and don't forget to where protective masks and gloves. i have been doing some reasearch and asbestos can be technically transmitted by touch. Not sure if it is true but just take some precaution. Hope ya'll get a chance to check it out and PLEASE DONT GET CAUGHT, TRUST ME THE CONCIQUENCES ARE NOT GOOD...the fines are about $500 for each person

I went there last yesterday. What an awesome place. Nothing scares me..as my friends say I have ball(S) of steel..if I had ball(S) that is! The place is really cool and I'll admit a little scary..I think I was more worried about fallling through the floors than anything. Alot of people get afraid there because they hear things. You have to realize..your echo bounces of everything in there and sometimes takes a few minutes to get back to you so you think you are hearing something else..Cant wait to go again and takes some pictures..one thing that got me after reading all of this was..when my boyfriend were there..walking down some stairs..I thought I heard a little girl laugh..blamed it on the wind..laughed with the BF and said thats funny..sounded like a kid laughing..and we both laughed..but it seems other people have really heard that kid laughing..so its something to make you go hmmmmmmm... And if you read all this before you go into that place..your going to be scared..power of suggestion does crazy things to you! lol

I was hiking the RR tracks with my son this afternoon, we went through the tunnel and stumbled upon Henryton. I had never heard of it before so it was all new to us (hence I came home, and googled this site up). After checking out the boiler building, I felt the call of nature. Watch where you step because not only are there manholes with missing covers but I dropped a nice steamy deuce in the leaves (& you thought that smell was from the sewer). We then hiked to the top of the hill. Now let me tell you, my son (6yo)has always "seen dead people" since he was real little. I am not making that up. Not like in the movie but he definitely has a connection that most do not. Too much to get into here. So anyway, after looking around the garage I asked him if he wanted to explore around some of the other buildings. Now it may be that my kid has way more common sense than me, but when I asked him he just stared at the big white buildings as if he could see through them and very matter of factly said, "Dad, we should head back now. We don't want to go near there." Fair enough. We headed lickety split to the tracks, through the tunnel, and back to the car. When we got home I asked him why he did not want to explore anymore. He said, "I don't like it when evil is looking at me."

i just went up there last night and it was AWSOME, the buildings are HUGE and stable for the mostpart. We parked in the gravel next to the traintrack, even though it was nighttime, and the tunnel you go through is very freaky. I seriously felt like i was in some horror game or something. We didnt get to go on the roof though cause we didnt want to stay too long, but it so cool to see how large this place was. And to all the people who wore masks, i just had to laugh, aspestos takes YEARS of exposure to even affect your respiratory system. You don't NEED masks, but the air is very dusty and heavy. Make sure you wear think shoes, plenty of broken glass everywhere. And i dont reccomend takeing little kids, due to all the nasty graffiti pictures people put up. Were going to go again when its daytime, and another time at 3 in the morning so we can have a chance at seeing some paranormal activity.

Went last Saturday. First me and my buddy checked it out during the day then we came back with a group at night. We had to cross the river but it was well worth it. The place is creepy as hell, lots of exploring possible, but if you go at night, definitely take a flashlight and gloves or something. And keep an eye out for holes in the floor, and mysterious voices!

I went there with some friends for the first time last night and I had no idea exactly where we were going. I was just told to come ghost hunting. After walking up the rr tracks we got to that creepy building with the smokestack and I thought that was it. HA. When we climbed up the hill to the sanitarium I was in awe at the size of it. There were 7 of us girls and all we had were cameras and cell phones, no flashlights but we went inside the buildings anyway. We were there from like 1 to 2:30 am I guess. We got on the roof of the big one in the middle. 4 of the others climbed up to the third floor of the brick building with the collapsed roof. I don't remember seeing any burnt down place? But then again it was really really dark out. Definitely the most terrifying place I've ever been.

i'm the moderator of http://www.savehenryton.com so, thank you to whoever posted my url on here :-) savehenryton is the initiative to rescue the buildings. I have another website, http://www.henrytoncenter.com that is under construction but is basically a resource of all the historical information that is available on the center including artifacts such as the book the department of health published about it in the 70s and several newspaper articles dating to the 30s and after. if you're a Henryton fan/enthusiast, please check them out.

i went there too with my friend, and it was really creepy. we were in one of the rooms in the basement, in the small dark tunnel in the very back, and i took a picture, and when i got home and put it on the computer, i noticed there was a white figure in it. i enhanced it and you could see the features of the white figure. We also took a picture in a dark hallway, a random photo, and i also went home and put it on the computer and enhanced it, and there was a face in it! it was a really scary face too. and even though we were in a really dark hallway with no windows, there was a cold breeze.

we went there last night with a few friends. My first time and just seeing the old buildings are freaky. its sad to see all the graffiti and crud stuff. We actually stayed outside on the backside of the large building for we saw two groups, eventually we went in and had met up with one of the groups. We mixed together and explored. They told us what all they've seen and heard as we walked around. Never went to the basement, but there's always next time. Did go to the one building where the roof is craved in - very cool to be up there and look out over top the buildings. And to the one who posted it was caling out to you; i must do agree it called out to me as well. While exploring the large building we heard banging noises from the upstairs. The group we mixed with heard a little girl screaming in one of larger rooms. We only went on the first and second floor of the large building, explored the building with the craved in roof and the smaller houses and the gym/classrooms/music rooms. Lots of glass, water and broken stuff so closed toed shoes are a must, plus a lot of walking so your feet wont hurt. we also had ghost equipment like night vision googles, rabbit ears, heat sensor, emf reader something like that, and bring flashlighs, bring batteries, they are seemed to die really fast. we parked in the hunters parking lot ... around about.. dirt circle like road thing.. It was fun, spooky and creepy, but was worth the time being there. cant wait to go back to explore the rest of the large white building and hopefully the rest.

Went there the other night. My advice; don't bring any friends who are babies, they will ruin your experience. This place is big, we only got to explore about half of it. And just be careful on the train tracks, we were fortunate enough to have a train come while we were walking back, kind of cool at 1 in the morning. We were also scared by another group of kids coming to explore it, that was very funny. This place is still standing, if you see any kids vandalizing, beat their asses. They will be the ones to ruin this place for you. Overall, it's fun, give it a shot.

< same person from 6/9. went back afew weeks ago... finally explored about 99% of the place.. left cause of the kids.. if you go and see alot of kids being loud, drinking and/or vandalizing; my advice, just leave and come back another night. They are the ones who will get you in trouble with the law... I mean sh!t.. They were up on the roof mooning ppl! And some car dropped off another group and stayed up by the gate with their lights on facing the main white building.. F'n morons.. This time though we parked over by the river and had to cross it lol high tide and rolled up pants and dark water don't mix =:)~

i just went tonight. it honestly wasn't that scary. i was afriad more of getting caught by the cops then of any ghosts. we parked near the railroad tracks and walked down through the tunnel and to the buildings. it was spooky to think of how people used to live there. lots of graffiti, and broken glass. it's pretty dangerous since it's falling apart. we ended up getting caught by someone who lived near the tracks and probably saw us, but we didn't get in trouble. pretty risky though since there were cops there earlier in the day. so pretty much, advice to people going, do not park right near the place, even if you have to walk more, it's worth it. and bring flashlights and masks and gloves since it's dirty and filled with abestos and who knows what else.

Me and a group of four people decided we would go on down to henryton. We heard alot about it and we are into that kind of stuff, who isn't? We went at like 11:00 because we were afraid the cops might catch us. So as we were walking we came upon a stream we had to cross. Turns out my clumsy friend dropped the flashlight when she jumped. We couldn't get it to work but thank god we had another one. We decided to split up 2 and 2. And  so me and my other friend were searching the bottom floor mean while our two friends were searching the top,(without a flashlight) so we heard a loud thud and ran up to the top floor(nearly falling through the stairs.) And we saw a large chalk board, luckily our friends wern't hurt. they said they didn't know what threw it scince they didn't have a light. But luckily we had one. We examined the chalkboard and guess what it said? "get out!" We wern't sure who wrote it but we figured we would stick together from then on. As we were walking down the stairs the chalk board flew past us and landed at the bottom of the stairs. It then said"save yourself, run!" So we really didn't want to stay and see who wrote it. As we were running we saw a man behind us. He seemed to be fairly old. Maybe in his 50's. He began to chase us. We got to the railroad tracks, turned around and he was gone! yeah freaky. As we were almost to the car we looked around and couldn't find our friend beth. She had dissapeared, we thought she was running with us. we filed a missing persons report and everything.

to the one above me

we went one night and we were looking around and hear a woman crying hysterically and we were really scared until we pointed our flashlights to a corner with a woman curled up to it. we were really petrified. we asked if she was alright and she turned around and her fingertips were bloody and she was wearing a yellow top stained with blood im not to sure what happened bc she wouldnt talk to us all she did was stare and rock back anf forth we were to scard to keep going so we left to our car. a couple days later not even a week we were near there in a shopping center and seen a missing person flier we look closer and recognized it was the girl we had seen it was kinda hard to make it out since she was so bloody that night. and so we were really curios about her so we went back and we looked through the place and it didnt seem like she was ever there until we went to leave and we spotted some old man at the river with some big object with a shovel and we havent went back since.

for anyone going to henryton as of now, they have a security guard on duty for most of the time by the main gate. parking at the railroad tracks is very risky. I have seen cops sitting there are well as waiting at the cars when you come back. As for the log crossingand circle, it is your best bet if you HAVE to park. the best idea is to have someone who can drop you off by the woods near henryton and hike to the edge of the area to scope it out for cops, then simply go in. this way if any cops are there or some by, you can simply run and not worry about your vehicle. as for the dust masks, dont wear them because they are useless and dont prevent asbestos from going through. I would only use one flashlight for your group as they attract the cops. don't make loud noises (yelling, breaking stuff, etc.) as the cops will hear you easily. When in doubt, just remember that if the cops come it is a giant game of hide and seek on crack. hope this helps, have a safe trip everyone

i found this place on my mtn bike. i live over the train tracks in ellicott city. It was in the day when i found the large smoke brick stack and boiler room. decided to ride up the trail on the left and there the hospital was. i was amazed and had to walk around. being with my choc lab puppy i diddnt want to go inside the buildings with all the glass on the outside. I am very curuious for my own safety whats the deal with the homless person carrying knifes around that area? one i live close to henrytron and 2. i ride my mtn bike on the trails close to there. the internets full of bs. go to the place. bring gear- mask, a group, lightning and a knife. also remeber it is tresspasing if caught. theres signs all over the place and techincally i dont know if you all know this but walking or being in the park at night or the tracks is tresspasing. so remeber that when ur walking the tracks at night. some one please exlpain more about the homless person carrying knifes around this area? is this why security is heavy at night there??

People it isn't scary, it's beautiful. Some of the graffiti is really good, and it just adds art to old buildings. Anyone in photography should go!

ive been there quite a few times. its an awesome place. i actually met some people from the TAPS division in maryland, and they were going to do a ghosthunters special but i guess they didnt. anyways park at the hunters lot near the main entrance or in the lot where the tracks are. its def freaky and hanted. first time i went with just one other person and we heard metal dragging upstairs and doors just closed, there was no wind, and we heard screaming from the woods surrounding. the only security ther is a park ranger with green lights on top. just make up some  story tht ur not from around ther and u saw it on ther internet and were interested he'll just ask u to leave, but thts rare tht ul come across them. a lot of times whn u go theyll be like another group or 2  looking around. i just meet up a group together n meet new people.  i dont know anything bout homeless people at all i think thts bs. but i got a bunch of pics on my myspace  www.myspace.com/zeroskull60.  u can email me at zeroskull60@aol.com for any questions about it. def worth going to.
thnks everyone

The parking at the tracks now has trespassing and towing signs and the security guards are there at night 7 days a week. I drive past there coming from work at night and there are cop cars there most nights. Something must be happening, I wonder if someone has bought the place. I'd avoid the entire area around Marriottsville, the locals call the cops as soon as they see any cars. Too many stupid kids have pissed them off.

went here last weekend with a friend and a brother. parked at the tracks, didn't see any cops or security the whole time we were there. We went during the day on saturday since it was our first time; we didn't want to get lost. It was a pretty sick place, and it was raining/thundering so it added to the creepiness. We didn't experience much, though we didn't go into the buildings much. We did hear some footsteps and some strange sounds though. We also saw some cute girls :) We're going to go again next weekend probably and actually investigate more inside the buildings. After looking over some of the footage I shot, there was one point I was filming down a hallway and there was this glowing light. Looking closely at it, it looks exactly like a head, and you can see half of a face very clearly. I'm letting my friend and his brother look at it tonight to give confirmation.

I have now been twice. This place is not haunted. We went into every building and every floor, have spent probably close to 6 hours inside the various buildings on the two seperate nights. Both times were in the middle of the night between 11 and 2 a.m and the only thing that even resembled hauntings were proven wrong when we discovered another group of ppl across the facility. This place is obviously very well known and both  times we have been people have tried to scare us. The chances of you being the only person or group there at any time is very low, which explains the stories of voices and all that nonsense. The first time we went we didnt see anyone else there the whole time and didnt hear anything suspicious. The second time there were probably a good 50 ppl total walkin around the facility and that was the only time we heard things that seemed eerie.

This place sounds fascinating and the pictures I've googled of it are breathtaking. However,no building that old, weak and structurally unsound is worth the risk, especially at night with a whole group of drunk, stoned, disrespectful people  who spaz out at  the sounds of pipes banging or some mudane crap like that. Common sense, much?

And anyway, ghosts can and do attach themselves to people and will follow you home like a hungry puppy from hell.If an angry spirit chooses to do so,it can be virtually impossible to make them leave, especially  for those who don't believe in genuine phenomena. Why entertain the possibility of paranormal oppression then?

Seriousley,if you are going to Henryton or any other abandoned buildings, make sure a friend knows where you are and when you will be back.Stay sober.Go during the day and even then bring a flashlight and a first-aid kit.Wear work-boots.And for God's sake,if you fall through the roof and break your neck, don't come crying to me.Happy hunting, boys and girls.

I'm sure most go just for the fun of it, but I will say this, dust masks don't help with the asbestos. You have to wear a respirator with the right filters. Another fact, it takes a long time for the disease to show up. So when you are older and you are a victum of it you have only yourself to blame. I've know people that have died and it's not a pretty sight. Educate yourself against it. Afterall you found the directions on the web. Here is one site to get you started. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg255.pdf Be careful and stay safe.

Me and my dad's investigation team from New York flew there. We went inside and a few minutes into the investigation we heard a child's laugh. The second thing we heard was something say "Where's the office at?" in a whisper. The next thing that happened was when I was walking down the hallway with the team and I felt something push me from behind. After I was mysteriously pushed we heard some footsteps. Then we heard what sounded like an old man moaning, kinda like "Whhooooaaaa". Then we walked into a room. What happened was something cryptically grabbed my dad, picked him up and shoved him into the wall. The last straw was when we turned on the ovulus. My dad said, "Is there any way you give us a sign or signal that you can give to tell us that you are here with us?". And then in this scratchy and really, really demony voice said "get out", kinda like "GET OUT". It scared the crap outta me. So we left the building immediately. To make a long story short, we've only gone there one other time. P.S.- Henryton is what we call a "paranormal playground".

My friends and I are really into exploring abandoned places and such, but the one closest to home, Glenn Dale, is wayyy too hot. Meaning, cops are all over that shit. I've tried to go twice and gotten caught both times. So, upon hearing about a new place to explore, I went to Henryton with three of my guy friends a little less than a year ago, and ever since I've wanted to go back. The place is HUGE. There are a ton of buildings, we didn't get a chance to explore them all, and I'd love to go check out the ones we couldn't last time. We went at around 10 PM and were there for a good few hours, until about 1:30 AM. We parked by a building close to the railroad tracks, and walked down them (it's quite a walk, I'd say at least a mile, but so worth it) and through the tunnel to get to the hospital. Honestly, I thought the tracks and tunnel were awesome. We hadn't heard that there was a tunnel prior to going, so seeing it emerge out of the dark with no end in sight was pretty creepy. We took a lot of pictures and explored as much as we could. Be VERY careful if you're planning on making the trip, as far as safety precautions know. Two of my friends were wearing bandanas over their faces to try to protect them from the large amounts of asbestos present in the buildings, but I didn't bother with that. Asbestos takes years to show up. Alas, you should still bring a face mask with you, I know it may seem futile but hey, it couldn't hurt. Also, wear sneakers. There's a ton of broken glass everywhere. As far as it being haunted, I'm not so sure. I don't scare easy, so I guess I was just more worried about a homeless man killing us or the cops catching us. There was definitely an eerie vibe about Henryton. We heard a few strange noises, and footsteps (probably from other explorers--we never saw anyone, but I'm positive someone else had to be there). There were clattering sounds and a few doors shut. I swore I saw a light come from the upper level of one of the buildings. Some of the graffiti is sick. Some, not so much. I'd recommend exploring Henryton to anyone who digs a good adrenaline rush, or anyone interested in photography. We didn't have any problems with any security guards or cops when we went, however, when we got back to our car someone had left a not saying "Do not park here." Also, when we were on our way back to the car on the tracks, the train actually went right by us right before we entered the tunnel. Pretty cool. Henryton is a totally awesome exploration spot. Just be careful!

So I went to Henryton last week for the first. After coming through the tunnel we encountered police lights across the river on old henryton road. so after waiting for what seemed like forever we decided to go in. we did not encounter any kind of security. the people present were me, my girlfiend, and a friend of ours. we started into the west wing and explored just about everywhere. on the second floor in the corner where the west wings connects to the main concourse in the stairwell, something was thrown down the hallway to the right of us. we looked and the was noone and no small oblects in that whole hallway. so we decided to go outside and collect our thoughts (get a cigarette) and think of what it could of possibly been. after we finished outside we headed back in when we were walking across the "parking lot" where the old theater use to be we heard a loud banging in repetition like a door slamming from the thid floor on the west wing right above where the obect was thrown. we continued in and didnt witness any other activity. we did scare the hell out of some punk kids that were up there patying. (thought we were cops and dipped) we did find some interesting objects. survival supplies, old (look as thought they were from the 70's) unopened medical seringes in a lab. we plan to go back this week to explore more areas of the campus. if anyone is interested in meeting up for some basic investigating email me lilbigfella9@yahoo.com

I am solely interested to go there soon strictly for artistic and documentary purposes. I am a professional photographer and a few yers ago a fellow artist was in a panel discussion with my sister who is an artist and documented henryton...I would like to do the same thing. I am not interested in ghosts, vandalism, and other crap.Just photography. I am only worried about the security and legal ramifications. I don't want to get fined or arrested at all, as I have a job that doesn't warrant criminal history well...Does anyone have any security tips not already mentioned? any locals? Could I also go about this legitimately and talk to thre people who provide the security, if I prove a legitimate environmental documentation for visual purposes? Just wondering...Please leave any advice, cooments, or concerns....

Is it safe to park at the dead end of Henryton Rd, then go across the river to the asylum on a week day during daylight hours? Any suggestions for the best way to avoid cops or local guards during the day?

royellewthcheese you can park right in the gravel parking lot by the train tracks during the day. the whole area is patapsco state park so you have nothing to worry about during the day. and security doesnt arrive til dark and only on friday and saturday nights. if anyone else is interested in information on where to park and how to get in i have been mutiple times. i know the place practically like the back of my hand. i have found what i believe is the tunnels that are underneath the facility. if anyone has any questions you can email me lilbigfella9@yahoo.com

From what I understand you have to approach the hospital from the railroad tracks, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to even get there. I'm trying to look at google satellite maps, but it's still hard. Coming from near Catonsville. If anyone has any direction advice/tips, please email me at sahara583@yahoo.com (Please put Henryton Hospital in the subject so I know it's not spam. Thanks!)

I went to Henryton last night. It was probably the scariest experience for me ever, but that might just be because I've never been anywhere haunted. Anyway, when we got there we parked right near it which was obviously not the best idea, but I'll explain why later. We walked down a hill and came to this caved in abandoned house. I started taking pictures. But than my camera started freaking out, even though it's never done that before. It kept blinking this yellow thing that looked like white noise, and it just kept doing that and later when I got home and checked the picture I took right before it happened there was just white noise. I get chills just thinking about it. Than we passed this creepy pond and went up this hill where both me and my sis managed to lose and find our phones, but that was probably because we were so clumsy. And than we got to the main building and my sister took a picture, and of course the first picture she decides to take has two people shaped figures in the window, needless to say we were insanely terrified before we even entered the building. So we went inside and nothing was out of the ordinary until my sisters friend started freaking out and wanted to leave. We obviously didn't want to leave because we just came all this way, but five minutes later we too wanted to leave. We all felt this sort of unexplainable presence, and this weird like cold feeling that I don't know how to really describe. So we left. Than we got to our car and the cops were waiting there for us. My sister made up this entire excuse of having to go pee on our way to our aunts house. They gave is the benefit of the doubt and let us off with a warning. They wrote up my sister, and my friends brother because they had licenses, but I didn't have license so I'm not in the system and if I go back there and get caught they wont know that I knew. But still, I'm definitely gonna park somewhere else and be WAY more careful if I go again. Although it was kind of intense and I will probably never ever go there at night ever again.
So yeah, that's my story! Believe or don't believe, that is up to you.

Alright so this place was literally the craziest most suspenseful place i'd ever been. I had heard about the place and found out that i only lived about 20 minutes away from it so i decided to go. It was pitch black outside and i couldnt even see the building. Me and my friends ventured through the woods up a hill and right when we reached the main building, I took my first picture. There were orbs EVERWHERE and two human ghost shape figures standing in front of the boarded up window. There is absolutely no explanation for that AT ALL. Now im not scared of anything except maybe heights. Ghosts and paranormal activity facinates me and excites me. So i started walking through the halls and was immediatly facinated with the history that was still intact and with the fact that thousands of people died here in very unpleasent ways. I wasnt frightened one bit. I started walking around in the patients rooms and was still perfectly 100% okay. Then i entered one patient room and there was an immediate cold pressure over my entire body. I cant explain that feeling anymore than that. I mean the windows were knocked out and the ventilation was fine. But where the hell was this cold pressure coming from? I became very anxious and screamed IVE GOT TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE. And everyone that i was with got the same exact feeling when they entered that room. As we were walking out, i grabbed my sister by her shoulders and shook her screaming I NEED TO GET OUT NOW! I NEED TO GET THE HELL OUT NOW!!! And we ran to the car. The entire ride home i was freaking out. Like something was following me or something was still with me. By the time i'd gotten home, i was calmed down. I had a sense of regret though since i didn't get to explore around as much as i intended to. Maybe thats because my first time ever going there was at night and i had absolutely no sense of direction of how to get around that place/area. There was something else there besides just me and my 3 friends. It was like i could feel the suffocating pain that those tuburculosus patients went through and that caused me to leave. It was a sign that since i wasnt in that suffering state, i shouldnt be there to "mock it" per say. But i was just so highly interested in the entire matter and felt lots of remorse for those patients. I do plan on going again but next time with more people and during the day. But you would never understand the feeling i had unless you were there. Ohmyeffingod.

Hi, I am currently writing an article about Henryton and am looking for folks who have had real encounters here as well as those who may have been hospitalized and/or worked in this facility. If so, please contact me at ghostorian@gmail.com. Thanks Randy

This past summer three friends and their dog and i went to henryton for the heck of it. i brought my camera and was snapping pictures the entire time but never seemed to catch anything. nothing that scary happened to us while we were there except 2 small experiences. the first was as we were walking past the lot where the theater had been. now that its burned down, there are 2 holes in the building that attached to it, being hallways. the place was creepily quiet and it felt like nothing was moving or breathing as we passed the spot. however, up in the top hallway opening i saw a sillouette of a woman. the woman quickly moved into the room on the right the second after i saw her. we quickly searched the place for others and found no one. the other time was when we were in a first floor hallway. the hallway was long and pitch-black. the only light was from the middle room's small window and the very top of the wall in the corner. in this room there were stairs that lead into the basement. my friend's brother and his girlfriend decided to strand us in the hallway, take both the flashlights and go down the hole. so we were stuck with the dog, ourselves, our cameras and the darkness. we tried to talk about something to keep our attention but neither of us could think of anything to say so we stood, back to back in the hallway. i immediatley felt the hallway grow cold and felt as if someone were watching me from the end of the hallway i was facing. i quickly grabbed my camera and began taking pictures w/flash furiously for light. nothing.

Went a couple days ago. Two retards got high and one hurt his leg and they freaked out and called the cops. An ambulance, fire truck, a cop car, and at least two unmarked cars came. My friends and I hid for a bit, and then a police state helicopter came. We met another group that was hiding also, and we had to sneak around the buildings because there was a cop car sitting in the middle of the area still. When we finally reached our car, we decided to drive up henryton rode, and there were about 3 cop cars at each road around henryton. I find it sort of weird that they would send that many cops and a helicopter because 2 kids got high at an abandoned hospital.

A friend told me, they were at henryton yesterday, Friday 1-28-11 and in the Administration building, there was a brand new bath tub places with pink towels and new soap..... weird for someone to stage that. Then further down the hall was shotgun shells and snimal blood all over. making a statement? They parked at the railroad tracks and walked in. No where to park with 14 inches of snow. That must have been a hard and cold hike. They almost got hit by the train. Anyone else see this lately?

Does anyone know about the shelter/barn that is Southwest of Henryton? Park at the dead end of Henryton Rd. You hike East along the river then you come to a split - you head up the trail to the left and the shelter is there and the graves are 5o yards left of the shelter. About 1 mile

Hey i just saw this page, i live like 10 minutes from Henryton and we used to go all the time in high school, now I drive by it all the time coming to and from work. Right now Dunbar guards it most weeknights and usually every weekend night, but they dont get there til after dark and they usually just sit at the main gate or along the RR tracks. theyre real easy to spot cuz they just sit there with their yellow lights flashing, if you see yellow lights, just go to the other place to park. They cant do much except call the local police anyway, theyre just rentacops, so dont worry about them. Watch out for the DNR cops tho, henryton is surrounded by state park property so sometimes theyre around, they usually drive green trucks. Theyre real cops so they can arresst you and write you tickets. Be careful, i love goin at night cuz its so much creepier, it doesnt have the same effect during the day.

My bf and I went during the day the beginning of this month. We walked down the tracks which was kinda scary because of the snow and ice and there were a few trains that afternoon. We ran into 2 living people when we first got there, they were stealing copper wiring and they left quickly after we talked to them. There was no one else there. We did see some shadow figures in some of the buildings, and like a dumba$$ I forgot my recorder, but I used the 'ghost radar' app for a few minutes in the hallway of one of the buildings and had over 12 'spirits' show up on it almost immediately. That was crazy, I've used that app many times before and it never had that many all at once. My bf took some awesome photos and it was nice to explore a once magnificent piece of architecture. Such a shame its been vadalized and its in such awful shape. Please be careful if you go. We did wear masks that prevent asbestos inhalation, I advise the same for anyone else ($35 at Home Depot) and there are several floors with large gaping holes that you have to look out for. Running around at night is not a good idea. You can still ghost hunt in the day just as easily as the evening. It was a great place to see!

We went there today for the first time. it was nice out and  we ran into another fellow photographer who was leaving as we appraoched the hill up to Henryton. The place was alot more demolished than I thought would be but I was suprised how open and ungaurded it was.  Byberry in philly wasn't this torn up before the demolished it but it was patrolled unlike this place. we we free to walk around , go though the buildings and just take time to explore and take picutres.

We didn't see or hear any one so it was nice not having to worry about running inot anyone. We did the buildings make alot of noises. even captured a window open and closing but it was the administators building that freaked us out alittle bit. We started inside and were getting ready to go down the hall when we heard a HUGE bang sound from upstairs. I don't think I ever ran that fast in my life....lol. after that we just finished walking around the back to take pics of the buildings behind it and started heading back. we did run into about four teeenagers climbing up the hill towards the buildings as we were heading down .

well now its on fire cuz i belong to a carroll county fire dept ant it caused a big issue cuz nobody was allowed to go interrior due to structural integrity and when units arrived fire was through the roof and there is limited access to it so i guess nobody is gonna be able to go anymore because of the arson and i suppose it will be heavily watched now

Metal cage out back is for Garbage. Not to put crazy people in.

My friend went on 5-4-11 at 6:45 which was dumb. The Dunbar Security guy saw them leaving and unlocked the gate, drove in, locked the gate again. Tried to find them, in his car. They walked over to the St Park side, where it is legal. They ran to their car and he saw them. He had to unlock the gate drive out and lock it again. They were gone by that time. Not very smart security guard!  And not very smart to go there after or near 7!

I haven't been there, but I know three of my friend's have. It seems really interesting, I'd be one of the people to go during the day, considering I can't go out after 8 anyways. haha. One of my friend's took a ton of picture's. I don't think she said she had any spooky encounters when she was there with other friend's. I might freak out if I went though, and with my luck, I'd probably get caught by the cops.

My name is Meghan.I went to Henryton Hospital the beginning of January of2009.I was invited by my friend Scott(May god rest his soul)At the time I regreted going but he passed away 2 months later and now im glad I went.We decided to go late one night around 11pm.We were all bored and Scotts friend was a member of the Maryland chapter Ghost Hunters,I belive his name was Brent. It was me,Scott,Brent and about 8 other people,im not sure there names because that was the only time I saw them.It took us about an hour to get there and we parked a little ways away from the property so that the security guards wouldnt know we were there. We got out and started walking and before we even got onto the property I had a wierd creepy feeling wash all over my body, and I knew already it was a mistake going there. We went into a couple of the buildings and just about every time we looked out the windows into other buildings we would see dark shadow figures in the shape of people and a couple times we saw moving lights when the whole property was pitch black. We heard footsteps on a coule of different occasions when everyone would stop to listen. The scariest event that took place that night was when everyone all gathered on the second story hallway of one of the white buldings and we turned off all the flashlights and stood silent.About 5 min into the silence and listining we all heard this distinct moaning. It was coming from the story above us and we knew for a certain fact that there was no one up there because we already went thourgh every inch of the bulding and we found no one there.Every single one of us heard this moaning and it sounded like someone half crying in pain and moaning. Its the scariest experiance I have ever had with the paranormal. We all went upstairs to where we heard it and yet again no one was up there. At that point we decided to get out of there and fast.As we were walking off the property we all looked back to the 3rd story windows of the building we were just in and every single one of us saw a figure at the window just looking at us.I swear we couldnt get out of there fast enough. For about 2 weeks I couldnt sleep with the light off and I had this errie feeling like I might of brough something back with me,but as time went on the feeling went away slowly.I deff. think that Henryton Hospital is haunted and the only way I would go back there is if once again im surrounded by alot of people.

HoCo resident here. I've lived in MD all my life and explored all the spots around here. The old woman's institute, hellhouse back in the day (before some kids from Hebron burned it down) when we used to get shot with rock salt by the groundskeeper with all the dogs, I've been to glenn dale and some other places people don't even know about.

Henryton was the only time I was ever scared.
But not because of paranormal stuff. First time I was about 14 tears old in 2002. We went and somehow I lost my keys, had to go back by myself the next and somehow I found them on the roof. , in 2003 a homeless looking guy holding a piece of re-bar was stalking us around the outside. We eventually turned around and started to walk up to him after he had followed us for some time. He stopped and we stopped. He turns around and walks away. Another time in 2006 we got chased around by the biggest fastest freaking cops ever. I don't remember if they were HoCo or CaCo but they were fast and chased us around a good bit. It was like a messed up game of hide and go seek on acid. I didn't go back until 4 years later.

More recently last year in 2010 we decided it was time to go back after a night of drinking. We get there and weren't there for more than 10 minutes before we get bricks thrown at us by people up on the roof. I got a bloody shin as a result because we started throwing stuff back and I took a rock to the leg.

Last time we went in June of 2011 we saw guys with paintball guns and dogs so we kept our distance they avoided us as well thankfully.

The homeless guy and the cops were pretty scary.

As far as ghosts and weird noises nothing out of the usual. No feelings of dread or some ominous looming terror. That's all your mind. I believe in ghosts (Gettysburg is scary and I used to bartend in a bar in ellicott city that is haunted as hell) Henryton had no activity. I always went at night with 2 or more people in the summer or fall.Everytime I've left with a good story.

I have lived next door to the Henryton Hospital for the last 24 years, my husband has lived here all his life. In 2001-2002, my daughter had a Halloween Party at our home with 30 of her middle school friends. My husband surprised them with a Haunted Hayride. Little did the know he was taking them to the Henryton Center. My brother and his friend, my oldest son, my 2 oldest daughters and my son- in- law, and myself dressed up and walked to the center a half hour before, to hide in the outside stairwells of the old abandoned buildings as to jump out and scare the kids on the hay wagon. It was all my daughter and I could do to wait it out without leaving before they arrived, as we were on a seperate stairwell from the others and were very scared. We toughed it out and scared the crap out of those kid. Needless to say, the Halloween Party was a huge success, and those who attended still talk about it 10 years later. A lot has changed at the Hospital since then. You may no longer roam freely on the grounds as because of vandals, they have security 24 -7. 3 fires in 10 years, 1 due to lightning and 2 due to vandals, force us to evacuate our home at the time of the fires as to not breath in the esbestos. The hospital will never be torn down or sold as the expense of removing the esbestos would be astronomical. If you are planning to visit the hospital, please do not vandalize and be careful as the security is strict, even more so at night. To the best of my knowledge, the hospital is not haunted, but just a step back in time to a large group of eerie, old abandoned buildings, which housed the very unfortunate, so many years ago.

Camaroduke,
My Grandmother lives in Carroll County and hearing this is in her area is rather intriguing. I would never start to think to vandalize this place, and have full respect for the spirits that rest there. However, I am very interested in the paranormal and just the general history of places such as this. I would love to visit there and would also love to not get caught. What is the best way to visit Henryton without the security getting upset? Should I contact them before so they know I'm there?

Anna.....  There has Never been Legal Access granted to Henryton! DO NOT get near the guards, they will call the cops! Scrappers have been destroying the place and breaking into cars parked in the dirt lot for the State Park. Police are aware of the scrappers and are making arrests..... Stay Away!!  Fires are beinf started on a daily basis there!

I was watching the show A hauning and Henryton was the subject. 2 people went there to look around and a ghost followed them back home. The ghost gave them 3 warnings. It warned them to get the dogs out of the house and they didnt, not to long after one of their dogs died. Their second warning was a furnice fire, a couple of months went by, the mom came home to find her home extremely hot and found the furnice on fire but not completely she cought it just in time. The third warning was a burglary, they thought someone was going to break into their house so for more extra protection they called their good friend scott to come and stay but the ghost that came from henryton scared him to the point where he moved out of his friends home, a couple more months went by and the people scott was staying with got a phone call stating that scott has been murdered in a home invasion. The story is really sad you can look it up its called A Hauting: Ghost box. when i seen it chills ran up and down my body and i was convinced that ghost can send you warning signs. The entire time the family thought it was their home that was going to be burglarized but it wasnt it was their friend scott the entire time.. To make it more sad when the ghost box said burglary they asked it someone was going to be hurt and the ghost box responded yes.

FYI,
Henryton is going to be demolished soon. The State of Maryland has approved the funds to demolished all building and return the ground to natural state. The demolish should begin sometime in the next couple of weeks or months  The project is set to be complete by 2014. The project is in the 2013 budget. You can Google Henryton demolish for more info.

So I went there june 22nd -23rd 11:30 - 4am ..being me my bf his sister and our friend zach it wasn't bad after going up the hill and seeing the buildings with no windows scared us. Anyway as we were walking down a hallway where somewhere put death --> we started to wonder but it led us to a open room where we ran into 4 other people that were outside ! haha. but we all stayed together and went up to the top floor. There was a door that said viruses. and some one put do not enter....we did anyway put bricks in front of it for it to stay open. my bf accidentally broke a piece of glass goofing around as we left the room and walked down the hallway theres a room that has like wood beds that has tape with peoples name my bf asked if one the people were here and the glass dropped so we went back an there was glass all across the floor. As we conutied out and walked back towards the woods we heard the door we left open slamm... and we knew there wasnt anyone esle up there and there was no wind ....were going back again this weekend!

I've been to henryton 5 times and only at night. Out of the 5 times I was only busted once but had a very close call the last time i was there. Once by police on the rr tracks (They will park their cars where you can't see and wait for you to start walking up the tracks) and luckily they let me and the 5 other people I was with go. The last time i was there me and my group were walking down the rr tracks to go back to the car which was parked at the church down the road. We used a radio scanner about an 1/8th of a mile after going through the tunnel and police dispatched a k-9 unit and 2 squad cars. We then started running and when we got to the church the pastor was waiting and he was pissed. He was cussin like a sailor and the one who called the cops and threatened to light my buddies car on fire and tried to stop us from getting in the car and going. At any rate, Its pretty easy to get into but just don't park at the church or the rr tracks. I would recommend going as we experienced hearing weird noises and even caught a light switch flipping up and down on a buddies camera. definately a fun place but be careful!

Peak paranormal activity occurs between midnight and 3am. Avoid weekends.

Hey, I'm planning on going a few weekends from now. Anyways I haven't been in the actual place (went on New Year's Eve) and I can tell you the original bridge to the place over the river is gone. However there are two other ways of getting in. You can walk about 1 mile down the railroad and through the tunnel. Or you can go in the old entrance way. I can tell anyone where to park to not get caught. Anyways, here's what happened: So me and two friends were jogging down the tracks and then we were on the bridge when we saw a bunch of leaves rustle in front of us on the hill. That was pretty weird because we stopped and whatever was there never moved again. So then we get in the tunnel. Creepy in there and seems to go on forever, it's weird. Didnt see security although I can sum up that they come at 7 and stay till I'm guessing the morning. They're rent-a-cops so they can't actually arrest you. All they can do is call carrol county police. If anyone would like to meet up and come with me and a few others or if you have questions, email mustang10762@gmail.com.

To the person who posted most recently, I've been there with friends a few times recently, and we only ever saw cops hiding out on marriotsville road one time. Other than that we've parked at the front gate on Henryton road every time and been fine. Tonight we actually had 2 cars and both fit perfectly out of sight. If you're worried or going during the day I'd suggest just putting a for sale sign in the window of the car and it'd probably get rid of any suspicion. Anyways, I got home about an hour ago and we were there for several hours and went through a bunch of buildings. There were a few times where it got creepy but we didn't notice anything paranormal that we could agree on. It's almost entirely empty in the buildings other than debris, and they are falling apart. It is colder there than the surrounding area and absolutely silent. We've never seen any security or other people there, only heard a dog barking once but there are a ton of farms in the area. I would suggest gloves and shoes are a must. Just be careful and it's pretty cool to go through. We're thinking about going back and just totally fixing up some random room, painting the walls and putting in furniture. The scariest rooms are the ones with little to no graffiti or that aren't totally destroyed.

Ok so I went with some friends and the place is much bigger than you'd expect. We had a close call while in the tunnel a train starting barreling down the tracks and we booked it out and hid. that scared the shit outta us. While on the roof I heard someone yell "Hey!" And we went lights out thinking it was security. Well nothing came which was odd. We walked through the main patient buildings and heard loud bangs right behind us and recorded it on camera. We saw flashlight beams twice but never saw any people which was kind of strange. If you need any information whatsoever I have it. Just email UndeadExplorer@gmail.com

Ok this is a story told to me by a friend who went up with some other people, 4 guys, 3 girls, that's somewhat important. They went down the rail road tracks and were stopped by a middle aged man with a large Husky. The man told them all to turn back and even threatened to "keep the girls" and turn the guys away. The wound up running away with good reason. Has this happened to anyone else? And watch out for that FYI

I was walking up a staircase and I felt a tickle on my left ear. I then heard a whisper that said, "touch my wet pussy." I began to walk faster. I was a little frightened and and then I felt a firm grab on my penis. I wasn't sure what to do, so I let it happened. Five seconds later I busted. It was the most insane sensation I have ever felt. So do I go back to get it again?
