I know that the building was a nice place an was a place to take care of TB pactients but, i also know that there was an incident a few years back about 3 kids went there playing around, there were playing near the elevator shaft an one feel down the shaft and another kid pushed the other boy down, they later found out that one was killed, not sure on the other one, also heard that it has been known to be very haunted, but no one is allowed to trespass on the grounds.... an YES I CAN SPELL BETTER THEN THE LAST PERSON :)

Actually they were under the influence of alcohol, and it was more than three boys. Their was a group of people, the one boy accidently fell down the elevator shaft. No one pushed him.

Yet apparently you can't spell Visitor, "and," "fell," "patients," "they" (you used "there"), or "than." It's not the same word as "then." Have any of you people even graduated from 6th grade? If so, your teachers need to be retrained. I know first graders who spell better than you do. It makes you less than credible. (Do you know what "credible" means?)

My brother was best friends with the boy who fell down the elavator shaft. I also knew the rest of the kids and so eventually I found out exactly what happened that night. Something scared the crap out of them and they ran not knowing where they were running stumbled upon the elavator shaft. It was too late to react. There definately are some strange things going on there. People shouldn't be bothering there. They should mind their business and stay the hell out of there.

They say that if u put cigs by the elevator shaft and walk away and do your own thing and then come back, the cigs would be smokes. You can hear babies crying up on the top floor and a man always follows you around in that place. This one time a glowing light was following us out of the building and we got into our cars and drove away, it still was following us. It quit following us when we pulled out from the driveway. That place is scary.

well i dont know who all u ppl are. but i have been in there a few times and i will tell u something right now. That place is the worst place to try and camp out at. For one you always feel like your being stared at all the time. No matter what part of the building your in.And I knew the boy you all taking about. He was a every close friend. And the girl that was up there was my sister. no one knows what really happened but the 2 that fell. But all I know is the first time I ever went up there was and alway will be my last. Never again will I go up there.I wished they would tare that place down be rid of it.

Has texting caused you all to forget real English? Again, pathetic. First, YOU (not u) should not have been camping there since it is private property and you were trespassing. You can go to jail for that, you know, and would have had the sheriff caught you. Second, my hope is that they won't tear ("tare" has an entirely different meaning) San Haven down, as it is an important part of North Dakota's history, haunted or not. Yes, I agree that it should not be torn down, but why the hell are you online nagging at people who can't spell and who trespass. First off, you can't expect a lot from people who have probably had a low rate public education (American education hasn't been well know in the past decade or so for producing highly education individuals). Second off, if you're so concerned about people trespassing then why don't you contact who ever is in charge of the property and discuss with him/her your concerns. Currently, you're just making yourself sound like a huge jackass with a rod stuck up your behind to a bunch of faceless/nameless people.

Crazy stuff happens at that place. It really should just be burned down. There is way to much evil and it's affecting the community as well.

If you want to know the full story on the elevator death, here it is:

This story is from Indian Country Today. Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota Email this page Print this page
Posted: October 27, 2001
by: Staff Reports / Indian Country Today
The band is taking steps to prevent teen-agers from getting into the abandoned San Haven institute after a 17-year-old boy died there early Oct. 13 after plunging 40 feet down the elevator shaft. The main building on the 600-acre complex was cordoned off with police tape, the elevator shaft in which the boy fell was blocked off and round-the-clock security was hired, said Kade Ferris, the tribe's historic preservation officer. A 16-year-old boy also was injured. Rolette County Sheriff Tony Sims said earlier the building is an attraction for area children who believe it is haunted, and as many as a dozen were in the building that night. San Haven was a tuberculosis sanitarium in the early and mid-1900s. In the 1970s, it was turned into a state school for the mentally handicapped. It closed in 1987, after a federal judge ordered hundreds of North Dakotans in mental institutions moved into community environments. Ferris said the tribe designated the San Haven site, it bought in 1992, as a historic district because of ancient archaeological sites in the region, and the history of the sanitarium. Some sort of a museum is a possibility, Ferris said. "Something that would be functional for preserving that time period of the United States."

Do any of you people  know how to spell or use proper grammar?  How about spell check?  You come across as very uneducated and juvenile.  If you want someone to believe the b.s. stories you have posted, you may want to look in a dictionary or use the spell checker option - maybe people would take you a bit more seriously.  Your not texting for your peeps here, your leaving a post. There is a spell checker now (ie7 & firefox)... (Click the abc icon) Hint Hint....

San Haven, San Haven, San Haven.
I vote we write into a Paranormal Investigation Team.
--This could sure narrow down the truth from the suspicion.--

It is my understanding that Dakota Paranormal Investigators from Fargo are attempting to obtain permission to do a professional paranormal investigation at San Haven. If you think this is a good idea, contact the Rollette county sheriff's office and tell them that (and no, I don't belong to DPI, but they are excellent and very professional investigators, not teenagers looking for a good scare!).

My mother worked there in the '80s while it was a mental care facility, and my father worked there after its demise, assisting with the asbestos removal.  They have both assured me that nothing of the paranormal persuasion had ever happened during their tenure on the property.

Being a curious child, I had gone in with friends to check it out myself on numerous occasions (both day and night), and nothing even remotely upsetting or supernatural had occured in my presence.  Thus, one of three scenarios is possible: 1) The property is not what one would define as being haunted, and the so-called eye-witness accounts are tall tales woven by those desperate for attention or to scare their friends; 2) Some people actually did see strange things while on the property, which were along the lines of drug-induced hallucinations rather than paranormal phenomena; or 3) Psychic sensitivity is required to witness visions of the supernatural, which my friends, family and I would seem to lack.

Notice my open-mindedness on the subject.  I'd like to believe there is something worth talking about up there, but until I see some proof, I'm afraid I'll have to stand aside as a skeptic.

There is something strange that happens in that place. My husband and i went here with our 2 boys about 10 years ago about 11 pm. We did see something in white moving really slow from window to window. It was in a shape of a person but couldnt see the face. I started to get really scard and told my husband to get us out of there and as soon as we were pulling out, something white went in front of our car and disappeared. My son had went there before with friends and he told us about hearing things in there, so thats why we went there, just to check it out. We never went back again. So yes, there is strange things going on there.

My mother and I were there in the
early 50s due to her relapse with
tuberculosis.  We spent a year there.
Considering how life went after that,
I know that it is a supernatural
world!

I think that who ever keeps on talking about peoples spelling on this website should mind there own buisness and get a life instead of coming on this site every day just to check someones spelling and grammar. I think who ever you are...Your probably a white person who dont have a life and has to make natives misserable just because were native and spell ddifferent dont mean s***. SO GET A LIFE AND STOP HARRASING OTHERS PEOPLE YOU DUMB B****!!!!

Ive been to towns around N.D. like Tagus and Ambrose.... tagus was nothing scary.... but Ambrose on the other hand was a little bit awkward even though nothing "superstitious" happened... i love visiting ghost towns and abandoned hospitals like this one and the one in Ambrose.... From reading the comments on this website i decided i wanted to check San Haven out... Thanks everyone, except for the stupihoe that is complaining about how people spell. some people cant help... just keep it to yourself. no one wants to hear.

i had went to tagus in 2001 with a couple of freinds one night, i beleive it was in the fall,to do a little investigating we made our way to the cemetry parked my truck outside the gate and walked in,it did not take long for crazy stuff to start, like weird flashing orbs of lights and noises;the feeling there was something watch you.after about 30min. the others that were with me decided that was long enough and went back to my truck, few minutes later i followed, about 10ft. from my truck i had a feeling that something was behind me so i turned around when i did i was hit in the chest so hard that i flew into the side of my truck, almost landing on the hood.now i am not one to say it was a ghost or spirit but i will say this, when i turned around and got hit there was noBody standing there, just a mist;like a fog, explain that if there is no such things as ghosts, spirits;entities!

My boyfriend is the one who told me about San Haven. He went up there at night with a group of friends, and said some really weird stuff happened - like batteries dying, hair standing on end...the usual. He also said that he heard what sounded like radio static. He's a pretty reasonable guy so I have to reason to doubt him.

This past summer, on the way back from the Peace Gardens, my mom, my dad, my boyfriend and I stopped by to just look at the building. We parked on the road by the pasture. I started feeling really sick, so I just stayed in the car. My mom and dad got out and walked around a few feet. All of a sudden, I felt this incredible crushing sadness, like everyone I loved was gone. I just curled up in the back and cried. I don't really remember, but I guess I got pretty hysterical. My boyfriend told me that I look terrible - he said that my eyes looked sunken in, my cheeks were gaunt, and I had no color left. I just felt terrible, so lonely. Later, when we got home and I calmed down, my mom said she had felt this weird draw to an elevator [ she had never heard about the kids falling down the shaft]. She said it seemed like something was calling her. Maybe there's a malevolent something down there that gets its jollies from causing harm. I don't know....but I do know that that place has some seriously bad vibes. If you do go there, just be careful - the buildings are decrepit and the beings are mean.

96.3.123.17 :  I, like you hope that San Haven is not torn down or burned down, but, if you have been there recently, you have seen that someone has burned down some of the cottages.  Shortly after the closing of San Haven they held an auction sale, at that time the place was still pristine, unfortunately after the tribe got a hold of the property the destruction and vandalism went ahead in full force, the copper was stolen by scrappers, they even took the shingles off most of the buildings, leading to the collapse of many of the roofs.  The tribe has been given money through Brownfield Grants/EPA to clean up the asbestos and other dangers on the site, but if you go there, it is clear that nothing has been done, basically a waste of tax payer funds, it would be interesting to find out where the grant money went. Link: http://www.engg.ksu.edu/chsr/outreach/tosnac/sites/turtle.html  I don't know if much, if any of San Haven is worth trying to rehab - it's been left derelict and unprotected from vandals and scrappers for over 20 years now - it's a shame to see what once was a beautiful setting trashed beyond belief.  When San Haven was serving as a T.B. hospital, it was indeed a lovely, landscaped facility.

PLEASE READ!!!ITS A LONG ENTRY AND AN IMPORTANT ONE AT THAT!My name is Shane and Im a paranormal investigator.(I dont call myself amature anymore as I have been investigating haunted buildings, grounds and people for over 15 years.)Im extremely SERIOUS and SCIENTIFIC when it comes to the paranormal, ghosts etc. When I investigate I come equipt with infra red cameras, high quality digital recorders and digital cameras, EMF meters, battery free flashlights and a small suitcase of rechargable batteries (fully charged) I have a couple friends here in Bismarck who have been investigating with me for years and we share the same thoughts on the paranormal. These things everyone claims to have seen are nothing to be frightened of and these entities are not creatures of the night! They were people once, just like you and I and for some reason they are stuck, do not know they are dead or refuse to go to the light (for their own personal reasons). The ONLY differance between us and them is that we still have our bodies! Thats all. Anyway I learned of this location from a beautiful native girl I met at a thrift store here in Bismarck today. (1/23/2010) We got to talking and the subject of ghosts came up and she mentioned experiences she and her siblings had at this building when they were younger. Im VERY serious when I say that a plan to come and investigate which has already been penciled into my schedule book, We three investigators plan on coming up there this summer, hopefully by then we will have proper and legal permission to enter the site. (I heard it mentioned that one needs to contact the "Rollette Sherif's Office" to obtain permission to enter the property? Is this correct or is there a private owner to the building? Anyway if anyone could inform me of the correct owners to contact Id be ever so greatful. If there are "SERIOUS" individuals who might be interested in accompaning us on the investigation please let me know as we could use some extra people (as the place seems to be large from what I gather) If anyone has photos of the property and can upload the photos to this website I would be so appreciative of that. If you want my private email it is cherboy29@yahoo.com. If you'd rather contact me there that's fine. Any additional information or sightings (as of late) would also be of much help in dictating how strong the activity is within its walls. I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME IN READING THIS ENTRY. And once more inform you that we are very dedicated in our investigations and I almost forgot we always attempt to send the entities "To the Light" Once we are finished gathering evidence from the site. Because thats what it's all about "Clearing the Area" and sending the spirits where they need to go (or at least attempting to do so) Remember these are people just like us, they just are without their bodies at the moment

Get a life with your spelling grammer mishaps (NERD), people are trying to express how they feel, and all you happen to see is bad grammer. The one I really feel sorry for is you. This is the USA, freedom of speech, and sure in the hell being able to spell and think the way you want when you want. So kiss on that or is that to much to swallow for you.

I went to school at dunseith. I remember hearing about a few people going up there to sit on the roof to scare people on those dark october nights. I was one of them, The way those kids would scream and run was hilarious. On a more serious note I was up there once during the day. We walked down to the morgue and then to the tunnels. In the tunnels our 2 flashlights went out. While we were fumbling around trying to get new batteries in at least one of the flashlights we could hear the distinct sound of dog claws on the concrete. We (3 persons) all were frozen in fear, especially me (I'll tell you more shortly). When my friend finally got the flashlight working we looked both ways in the tunnel finding it empty. We could still hear the sound both behind us and in front of us while we were walking out of this tunnel. When I was young (maybe 5) staying at a friend's house we were playing in the basement with an entrance/exit to one of these tunnels, it was boarded up fairly good as far as i remember. My friends' parents were upstairs when we both heard the sound of a dog walking on concrete coming from this door so we got a little curious and got closer to this door. All of a sudden, BAM!, the door was slammed with something, we were both close enough to the door to feel the cold draft coming from the cracks in the wooden door. We went screaming to the opposite side of the basement where my friend's parents met us. Meanwhile the door is still getting slammed by something solid enough to shake the door. I distinctly remember my friends dad saying,"Not this S**t Again!" Recently I asked my friends dad what he meant by that and he told me that when they first moved into that house the door wasn't properly sealed and the boards were already rotting, one night he heard the rotten boards hit the floor in the basement. He jump out of bed to investigate, turning on the light at the bottom of the stairs he caught just a glimpse of a shadow that "ran" in to the newly reopened door and once this shadow was in the tunnel he heard the same "dog on concrete" sound. Think what you want, San Haven is haunted.

San Haven has had a reputation of being haunted even before it was closed. I knew of people that worked there, especially  in the late evening and during the night that reported things that happened in the building. Staff would be working and would have different things happen. Such as the elevator would go from floor to floor with the doors opening on each floor and when staff would check into who was messing around with the elevator everyone had been accounted for and no one had explaination as to why the elevator was doing this. Other people would be at the nurses station during the night doing paper work  and would hear people talking down the hallway. Upon checking things out they would find patients sleeping and no one else on the floor. They often wondered if it was people back to visit from when it used to be a TB hospital. As for personal experieces I was at San Haven a few months ago and had some very strange things happen. We heard screams coming from different rooms and footsteps in hallways, just to name a few. IT IS A HAUNTED PLACE.

The Tribe owns the land and building and has leased it out for the time being to the Chase family. I was a Tribal Police Officer and have been to the site many times. I don’t know what is there I don’t really believe in ghost but even after 8 years in the Marines and time in a combat zone that place still scares the hell out of me I would like people to tell more in detail of what they seen or heard in there. I went in a few times and could feel some one watching me the whole time I even caught a glimpse of someone peeking at me and temps drop fast its cold even on hot sunny days and from talking to the Sheriff (Sims) this place was 100% self sufficient to include farms and spring water. And all the buildings and houses are connected with underground tunnels now collapsed and flooded. It is considered private property and you will be arrested if you get caught up there and besides it’s just not safe and there is still asbestos still inside.

I grew up at San Haven and have been on every inch of the place and it is NOT haunted! It was a most beautiful place in it's day but is now a mess.

I'm 27 years old now and when I was in high school I went to San Haven on three different occasions. Once in the day time and twice at night. I suppose you'd have to be lying if you said that the place didn't creep you out. It's very eerie. My sister and I were the only one's out of our group of friends who were willing to try to find the morgue. We only had a bic lighter to guide us through the dark tunnel and about 50 feet or so in my lighter died and didn't re-light. My sister's blood curdling scream in my ear startled me more than anything. So we turned back, feeling our way along the walls. I don't think it was anything paranormal, just a dead lighter. A Ouija board on a later trip brought no results. I don't doubt that there is paranormal activity it just didn't seem to happen while I was there. At least not in an obvious way. I don't go up there anymore even though I'd like to out of respect for Clint, his family and friends.

I'd love to find out more about the Sanitarium when it was open, etc. I can't find anything online except things about ghosts (which is also interesting)...I'm just looking to learn more about the people who lived there, and why it could be haunted by them today!

I find this all very facinating. I have always been interested in old buildings especially one with such history. It is too bad that the building has not been preserved as a landmark. Young kids that go up there for whatever reason should treat it with more respect. I understand curiosity, but I don't understand the need to do destruction. I would love to see this place and "feel" the history all about it.

first of all for the comment about natives dropping out at the age of 10, thats just racist! everyone in my family has either graduated or graduated and went to college, my mom is a successful psychologist and my dad is a CEO so you can go eat a royal bag of f**k. Natives are just as smart and successful. we are just secure enough to not have perfect punctuation and spelling on a random website, i feel bad for you honkeys, are you really that insecure to have to point small things out because of other peoples race, WOW your misery is really showing. get a life! But yes San Haven is creepy lol. But i love it, it's apart of our history.

It may have looked lovely on the out side but what went on there was ghastly. Mass cold showers with a garden hose, waiting for hours in an unlit tunnel to be tranfered to the lunchroom and hours of sitting in your own filth in large adult sized metal cribs waiting for the staff, often ratioed at one nurse for every 40 patients, to pay the slightest attention to you. People had their front teeth pulled to accomidate force feeding and not the even basic of human rights and or needs adhered to. God bless the people who fought long and hard for the ADA laws. It was so bad that rather than fix the wrongs they closed it down. Mor often than not the people who were released for here ended up with worse or more behaviors and conditions than when the were admitted. You ask how I know.... As part of a training exericise in what to expect and how to handle and or try to help those who were released a video was made and shown to the staff where I worked. extremel sad what when on just because there was no avenue of advocacy until ADA. Not one that worked anyway.

My cousin Rennee use to love sitting up on the roof at San Haven when she was alive. Weird or strange things would happen after her death when we come to visit her house. In ways nice because it felt like she was there. One night out with my older cousins we all decided to stop at the San because we were thinking of Rennee on our way home. It is so run down. I don't know if it was the stories or how it looked but I can say that I did feel very creeped out going in there. We went into one of the main buildings and as we went up floor after floor eventually we were near the top and our flash light died. I'm sure the people we were with were screwing with us. On the top floor in one of the rooms we walked by there was still a hospital bed. For me I did feel awkward being in there, such as feelings of being watched and just an overall uncomfortable presence. We went out to the roof, it was the middle of the night, amazing place but there is just a haunting feeling you get being there. As we returned to the staircase and started going down our flash light went out again. We were still walking down and at this point started running. A huge shadow jumped out at the end of one of the staircases grabbing for us. Our flashlight turned on as we all screamed...and here it was one of my cousin’s guy friends that were waiting to jump out and scare all of us. But overall I did feel like I was being watched while I was in there. I did feel a weird presence. It was creepy as hell in the building we went into. I have also heard, since both of my parents are from Dunseith, that before they found a cure for TB a large amount of people died while at San Haven. But we all hear a lot of things don’t we.

My mom worked at San Haven in the 1970's.  I use to have friends that lived on the site and I would go often and play with them.  We would run through the tunnels and play on the playground.  We would play hide and seek at dusk in the garden and I think it is in front of the refectory.  My mom and I stayed one summer on site in what I think was the old administration building.  There use to be a small store with penny candy in the basement, I think.  I have been looking at some of the pictures posted by Laura Palmer and trying to get my bearings.  It is strange to see the old place falling down.  I know there use to be bats in the attic of the old administration building.  I remember them laying on the stairs to the attic.  Scary to a kid.  I use to run through the infirmary to get to the nurse's quarters on the other side.  I remember the place where the elevators were was scary to me.  It was dank and dark with very little lighting.  That was also scary.  I remember they would play old music and one tune I remember was I Saw The Light.  Huh, none around the elevators.  I did have good times there but some rather scary ones too for a kid.  The tunnels especially could give you the creeps at times.  Does anyone know if the old children's home was turned into housing during the 70's?  It seems to me that is where my friend lived.  Would love to hear more from anyone who was there.

It is sad to see the destruction of San Haven over the last few years. I have been there many times and watched it disintegrate. The architecture was truly beautiful. I once found pictures of it back in the day on Art Rude's website, though I don't know the link anymore. They are worth looking at if you can find it. I have had some strange experiences while up there, and oddly enough many of them sound the same as the above listed, too many for coincidence I think. If anyone is planning on visiting there, please do so respectfully. Whatever entities may be there, it's their home and we're the tresspassers now.

How could one be looking for attention when all the names on the left are AnonymousVisiter. All the above is true, a few far fetched but sounds close to the encounters i've heard from friends. I've been in there when it was in prestine condition, it was freaky then. I'll be going up there to do some research soon, hopefully see something while I'm there.

yeah me and my boyfriend went to the san haven one night about 2 weeks ago. we were inside the building laying on the floor making out laying on a blanket. he had his pants down and my shirt off and than something or someone grabbed him and threw him off of me. and we heard some wierd noises that sounded like a young man yelling and we heard nioses sounding like a baby crying. so we got up and ran to his truck and when he tried to start it the battery went dead. so he called his cousin for a boost and when his cousin got there his truck started right up we didnt need a boost after all. and we got the hell out of there.

it's funny how you people "think" you know everything about this place, i'v lived by this place for how many years, my dad and i used to take walks up there, nothing "scary" ever happened to us. One of my uncles used to live behind the hospital, but his house caught on fire.  My grandmother was also a nurse there for many years.

NORTH DAKOTA US

If you must know, my brother Clint died there. Also i went there once, with my other brother (name classified) and his girlfriend. We went through all the buildings, nothing happened to us, no noise, no footsteps, etc. I do believe in ghosts and they might have been there, we didn't vandalize, we just saw and walked. So anyway it was nice to look at all the scenery, most of it was covered up though and run down. It is unsafe but if you are willing to check it out. You should get permission and check it out. Sorry if my grammar was off please excuse it.

ONTARIO CA

does anyone know exactly how to get to the morgue? I went there last October but didn't get to look around much since my friends all got cold (didn't dress warm like I told them too -.- ) anyway, we plan to return before its completely demolished. A good portion of it was torn down when we went. and I think there were other smaller complexes around the main one, has anyone went to those? or are they no longer standing? also if you go, I wouldn't worry about the floor collapsing from under you, but there are many hanging poles and metal beams, you might want to watch your head! wear good shoes, as there is broken glass and sharp metal on the ground too!
