Description:

Zombies and Ghosts and Cults, Oh My!

This forest has numerous paranormal or otherwise bizarre happenings. There have been reports of Zombies, Native American spirits, Pukwudies, Cults, Strange large orbs and much more. In general it can be said it is a buffet of paranormal activity.  Cattle mutilations have been found with highly percise incisions... and noone knows where the cows came from in the first place. Assonet Ledge, located in the forest, has had its share of tragedies throughout the years. It has been the place of numerous suicides and car dumpings. Not even the most professional divers can reach the bottom of it. The ledge is approx. 80 feet. Some people have sensed an overwhelming feeling of dread and melancholy at the ledge. It is also a hotspot for cult activity, as well as various parts throughout the forest, mainly the Southern side. It is said there are unfound bodies scattered in the forest, perhaps due to the cult activity. there has been evidence of Hoodoo and Santeria found here.   Phantom fires have been seen in the forest, especially around Profile Rock, a site sacred to the Native Americans. This large rock has the shape of a face. It is climbable. Atop, you can see Fall River and Taunton.  This also may be the spot where King Philip hid the Satchem Belt. King Philip is said to haunt these grounds, scaring visitors off.  There are many many more stories surrounding this forest, too much to explain here...

James Kater, currently serving time for the gursome murder of Mary Lou Arruda which took place on Copicut Road in the Freetown State Forest, has made the news papers through out the years. Many of them can be found here:

In the late 70's early 80's there were rumors of cult activity in the Forest. The police at first disregarded this, claiming that they were left over hippies from the previous generation. And then later on things became sinister. The previous rumors turned into fact. The Forest grew darker. Once a lovers lane, it became a dumping ground for bodies of human and animal bodies left over from murderers and cults. One case in particular has greatly dimmed the once beautiful Aura of the Forest. The Fall River Cult Murders... In the late 70's and early 80's these dead low life prostitutes began to show up in South Eastern Massachusetts. It is believed that they died by the hands of a murderous Satanic Cult whom operated in the Freetown State Forest. They have built a shack, now known as the "ice shack", which few people have seen. They did prepare for there deeds there, but have never preformed any rituals there. Animal bones have been found surrounding the area, but no human bones have been found. It is unclear if the shack still stands today, most likely not. It was handcrafted by druggies and prostitutes. The shack has developed a mythology over the years.

This case, The fall River Cult Murders, has surfaced in the newspapers and online over the years. It is also an interesting case because noone has been able to proove who did what and when. The story has changed numerous times since the beginning. There were accounts of many back room deals going on, Witness intimination, hidden evidence, bribery and so on. The two big names in the case are Robin Murphy and Carl Drew.

Robin Murphy, whom was granted immunity for testifying against Carl Drew is now out on parole as of 2004. She has been known and accountable for twisting the story numerous times and she has admitted to doing so in her last parole hearing, even lying under oath to a judge. At one point, she has even confessed her guilt of murdering the 3 prostitutes and blaming Carl Drew For it. She has fancied herself as a pimp and a prostitute. why is she on parole, even after confessing to murdering all three prostitutes?

Carl Drew, whom is still behind bars, has been pleading his innocence since day one. He is accused of killing only one of the prostitutes, Karen Mardsen. Though accused, Carl says he never had anything to do with the murder of any of these women. Though he did pimp them and has developed a brutal reputation in the area, he claims he has no angel back then, but he was not a murderer. The few times he has appeared in front of the judge, he has been denied. His case has always fallen on deaf ears. Thus, his side of the story has always been left out and ignored, never having a truly fair trial. It has also been said that Carl Drew was the leader of the Satanic Cult active in the Forest. However, later on in Robin Murphy's Parole Hearing, she herself stated there was never a Satanic Cult in the First place and that she made that up to further incriminate Drew. Why is Carl Drew's story downplayed?

This is a evil place with a bad history but I have not heard of any activity latly until now. I go to assonet ledge often and about all I saw was dirt bike riders and some evidence of recent camp fires.

Robin Murphy now works for the state's unemployment office. Do a search with her name, Suzanne Bump and Devol Patric.

Robin Murphy is a common name, are you certain that the above mentioned is the one involved with this case?

I am not going to even consider for a moment that the first comment is true because of the poor spelling and grammar of the individual that created the post. Stop making up stories. Been there a few times and never saw anything suspicious or out-of-the-ordinary. Went swimming in the ledge today as a matter of fact.

I frequently am in the forest, all year round, mountain biking, hiking and in the Winter, snowshoeing.   I've never seen anything unusual out there except for old tires, beer cans and those anoying noise dirtbikers who won't stay on their side of the forest.

Back to prison Robin Murphy goes. She was found to be in possession of heroin with a convicted felon. So much for working for the state and all.

I lived in Fall River until I was 17. Growing up, you hear lots of stories about what goes on in what we call "the Res" aka the Freetown State Forest. As a teenager, friends and I would go there just to get scared but we never really ran into anything weird. A few things I find odd about the Res is.. if you try to drive straight through (starting at the Fall River side) you will eventually be stopped by a huge ditch, which almost seems to be dead center. One night I brought a friend there, just the two of us, and we were unable to turn down the road that leads you into the Fall River side because a cop was parked there, blocking the path entirely. Neither of us are sure if this was a real cop or a "ghost" cop. I'm not sure about the cult activity and I don't know much about the Freetown side. What I do know is that just about everything you hear is folklore. I have heard so many different things about the Res and I don't really want to find out what is fact and what is fiction.
