Location Description:
The home on the Davenport property is gone now and the property is to be used for passive recreation, hikes, bicycle rides etc. For many years it existed as a quiet farm home. Then in the early part of the 20th century a fire changed all that. The fire seriousy damaged the home and killed two of the Davenport women, a young child and her mother. They say that the bodies of those who die a violent death linger. The home was rebuilt but from that point on, no one would stay there. The family moved out fairly quickly and retained ownership until the 1950s when the house and property were bought by a large group from Boston who planned to use the house as a vacation get-a-way. No one wanted to talk about why, but the vacation get-a-s only lasted a couple years. The merry crew did not want to stay in the house. Rather than sell it, they abandoned it and let it fallinto disrepair. The town eventually took it for back taxes and turned it into a recreation area. The house was torn down but its location is still avoided when the sun is low in the sky or in the early morning hours.
