Location Description:
It was Senior Prom night Mid May 1982 and I was set to graduate from one of the local high schools in Tucson. The night was not supposed to bring anything unusal..Maybe some dinner, dancing, and hanging out with others who like myself, were set to go out into the world and graduate come June 1982. The group (About 15 students total) all had our dinner that night at a local resturant and proceeded to our prom that was held at our high school gymnasium. The night was still young (About 12 am )..Several of us decided that we might go out to Saguaro National Monument West of Tucson to watch the sunrise that morning. There were 5 cars full of juniors and seniors that night, and many of us never expected to encounter what we heard, felt, and saw that clear Tucson evening. I was seated in the passenger side of the 2nd car.. We passed the intersection where Gates Pass Road and Kinney Road intersect. The lead vehicle keep traveling toward Wasson Peak, behind the Tucson Mountains. We decided to follow, figuring that maybe someone in that vehicle knew of a good place to park. As we crested Wasson Peak, (The lead vehicle now 75 feet ahead of the rest of the party) We noticed that the car was pulled to the side of the road with it's lights off.. We also couldn't help noticing that the radio, that was blarring music just moments before completely cut off!..As did our car lights and engine! We coasted to a stop behind the lead vehicle and promptly jumped out, thinking that perhaps the lead vehicle was having car problems... (All the ensuing vehicles behind us lost use of their radios, lights, and vehicles' engines...All stalled out as well... While we are all standing around.. Yelling at one another in our finest prom duds about the stalled vehicles... All of a sudden... We looked up and what appeared to be a camp fire on top of Wasson Peak, quickly turned into a huge burning cross follow by loud chanting! We all stood there in amazement..Watching what appeared to be cloaked figures dancing around the burning cross! None of us could make out what this group was chanting while on Wasson Peak but clearly, it was not normal! Some of the girls in the group began to cry, while the others formed the plan to push the vehicles back 75-yards or so to see if it would make any difference! The the lead vehicle was first to go.. As we pushed past a certain point.. The lights, radio and engine abruptly came back on! Several of us pushed the other vehicles back onto the road with the same results! We all drove out of there so fast and never spoke of it again! The Saguaro National Monument West of Tucson is a must see for any visitor to the Tucson area, with many watching a morning sunrise while sitting around Gates Pass. But be careful traveling thru the area late at night... The mountains west of Tucson just might enlighten you to something unusal.
