Location Description:

It was a military base in WWI and a TB hospital during WWII. In the mid 70's there was a devilworshiping cult that used it to sacrifice animals. It has one remaining building all others were torn down due to the decrements. This building is definitely haunted; witnesses have heard noises from the upper floor and seen lights near the fountain at night. It has tunnels that lead from Northwestern part of town to the Southeastern side of town, which ends up at the airport; they have all been caved in. It has been a place for teenagers to go and party. Different people have experienced something in what they call the "Alter Room". It is a shadowy figure that lurks just inside the doorway. There is also a cemetery just to the north of the building, graves disturbed and a large cross has been cut down. Town legend says that the teenagers that cut it down in the 70's all died that year. The houses around the area are also reported to have paranormal activities. The Holy Cross in recent days has become a dangerous place to be. Murders have been committed there in the last few years. A gang has killed a peer as a sacrifice and a lovers quarrel was the demise of a man in a drain pipe. The place has always been that of graffiti artists writing their names or the names of their favorite bands. Now gang names and signs are all over it marking it as territory. Sheriffs patrol it often now and run people off who are in there and possibly arrest them for trespassing.

AnonymousVisiter	I was born and raised in Deming. Glad I got out of that dead end. Apparently there are alot of people that are ignorant about the facts of Camp Cody and the Sanitorium. Try visiting the museum. You can find all the info you need. I admit, I use to party there in high school. I do believe in ghosts, beings, shadows, etc. but I never saw anything that made me think it was haunted and never got the feeling it was haunted. Just gives you a creepy feeling. If you let your imagination take control you will belive anything.

I believe it was everyone that signed thier name on the cross that died. I have been there and yes it is haunted, I have the pics and I have been to Greens sands it is also full of paranormal activity

rubenrocks2007 Last Seen: 1/16/2008 8:07:51 PM	So i`m from Deming! it sucks here and this past friday(Nov 2, 2007) I went there like at noon cuz we had a half day at school and my friend supposibly saw a troll and he seemed pretty freaked so yea idk if to believe him or not! What i know about it is that it was a military base called camp cody(mexian people were tortured so they would tell were pancho villa was at but they never told)! then a tuberculoses hospital( people with tuberculoses were burned and treated horrible), and then a psychiatric place for crazy people(they were treated really bad), then it was used for devil worshiping! All the tunnels are pretty much covered up theres a fountain there made out of rocks and you can go downstairs! Supposibly devil worshipers still go there so we try to be careful! Some girl fell down the stairs and cracked her head open broke two arms and choked to death on her own blood. Some gangsters shot this guy into a tunnel and thats all i know. We returned later and my friend saw this mysterious black shadown jump down into a tunnel and he freaked out bad and ran into the truck. It`s a great experience except for the fact that I coulnt sleep but oh well!

AnonymousVisiter ** US	wow u live in front of it so scary. try being related to one of the nurses that worked in the holy cross. and u all have it wrong it was a camp called camp cody named after william h cody. camp cody was a milatary base. but one day it got on fire nerly distroying everything only a few buildings remained. then three sisters named the sisters of notre dame turned camp cody into the holy cross which was a hospital 4 tuberculosis. then one day every one died including the doctors nurses and pacents they all died 4 un-noned reason after that it was closed due to economic reasons in march 1939 th sanitarium or as u know it the holy cross burned to the ground. no one knows how it burned it was 4 uncosed reasons. then a few years back it was used to worship demons so yes its very much hunted and very much real. i know my causen was there un forconitly she died before i knew her but i know her story from here diary!

AnonymousVisiter ** US	I lived in Deming and visited it quite often. Many things happened, flashlights with new batteries would die. Voices were heard, physical marks were left on bodies. One instance was while in the downstairs while going down the stairs a group of voices was hear chanting, while there were several of us in different areas and nobody else was in the place. Another instance was one of us was knocked down and immediately had a bruise in the shape of two hands on his chest. Holy Cross is definitely haunted and there are both residual as well as intelligent hauntings present.

AnonymousVisiter S US	I'm from Deming and I think going to the Holy Cross is a teenage rite-of-passage. I went there twice. I remember being really creeped out, and we went downstairs of the building that is still standing and we did hear voices, now I don't really believe in the supernatural or anything, but I definitely remember hearing some sort of chanting. When I told my friends, they said it was devil worshippers and we fled the area, we had heard through rumor that there had been devil-worshippers but were really scared to think something along those lines would be there when we were. I went back a few years later (I was 16 I think) and went into one of the tunnels that is under where one of the buildings that isn't there anymore and I remember my flashlight going out, but I attributed it to the battery dying on me. It was shortly after that trip when a dead body was discovered and the police really started monitoring it.

AnonymousVisiter D -	yeah ive lived in deming my whole life and im really into all that paranormal stuff. i went there and i can tell ya for sure its haunted. theres this room called the alter room where they sacrificed animals and stuff. they say even people too. but when i was there i saw a freestanding shadow run past it was friggin scary!! and the whole place is very open and theres no roof and the wind blowing through the building sounds like voices. and downstairs is completely dark and i could have sworn a girls voice! but the legend is it was first a war base and then a tuberculosis hospital where they ran out of room and just started killin off people and then the cult used it and so theres a bunch of crazy devil stuff. and its true all those people that wrote their name on that cross are dead. i know cuz one of them was my cousin he was in a car accident. id just be careful if u visit cuz its not just restles spirits: its cursed. the devil isnt a ghost he can hurt u.

When she looked to see who called, there was no missed call. That could be anything really... doesn't have to be supernatural, but it did freak me out a bit. That happened downstairs. It's an interesting place, with an interesting history. It's one place you don't want to go into alone though... that's for sure.

AnonymousVisiter V -	I went there a month or two ago. I wanted to see what all of this was about. A friend of mine tagged along, as well. Late at night, we pulled up to what looked like the front of the building. The driver was too scared, and she dropped us off. Told us to call her when we were ready. So, first things first, we entered the building. Nothing to it really, no odd feelings, nothing at all. We explored every inch of the place. We even went through a particularly long tunnel, which was very disturbing - pitch black in front, pitch black behind, with one flashlight, hopping over, ducking under and stepping on horizontal poles stretching from wall to wall. It was a very long and seemed to be the kind of place you see in a horror movie. The scariest thing to see was two or three rats scurrying away from our stomping feet, aside from the giant penises drawn on the walls. We returned to the building, went downstairs again, and on a more thorough inspection, found what appeared to be a human leg bone. When I say appears to be, I mean it was just a bone. But shaped exactly like a human's. Cannot be sure, but that was odd to see. Didn't hear any voices, no shadow figures, took pictures, nothing came up. We were having a good time, but I must say there is an aura about that place - every time I think of it I get very bad chills, and am indeed shivering as I type. Overall it was a disappointment, and in anger, we pissed on the building - it failed to scare us. Maybe we went at the wrong time - all I know is that it was dark. Also, be very careful - extremely careful - the place is full of holes in the ground that will most likely kill you. Bring several flashlights, something to drink, and wear pure black. Nothing shiny. The sheriff likes to run by with a spotlight every now and then - or somebody, at least. Keep your lights pointed away from the houses.

AnonymousVisiter ** -	ha i dont know whether to believe it is haunted or not...my friend, my aunt, and i all went there at night and nothing happened. the only thing that came close to something that would be a sign of a haunting was me getting poked in the back (and i was the last one to walk in) and me almost falling down the staircase (but both of those things can be easily explained by my lack of cordination and over active imagination). My friend almost did fall in one of the holes though... my aunt scared her with her breathing disorder and she jumped like 2 feet forward.

AnonymousVisiter	Ahhh man, i have never heard of so much sht in my life. I remember growing up and hearing so many stories, like the ones ya'll have listed. I remember always being scared and, yet, always loved the stories. And so that's all it was, just stories that scared the sht out of me. Well when i grew up i realized it was all bullsht, there isn't anything there. I'll tell you what i am scared of, tweakers. If there are crazy shadowy figures running around making all kinds of racket and staying out of the sunlight it is probably just some dude higher than a mother fcker with nowhere to go and nothing better to do.

My sister has told me of things and with the Holy Cross if you write your name on it you die a year later on the date that you put your name one it.

AnonymousVisiter ** US	I've been there a couple times and I'm sure it's haunted. When we've been upstairs a really warm air has gushed through even though it wasn't windy either of those days. One time we were taking a piece of metal off the old window (upstairs and to the right side) (a friend told us taking something would make the ghosts do something) and a weird deep humming noise happened, so I sat the metal on the window and ran down the stairs lol. I've never had anything happen in the alter room though. I've laid in the "sacrafice table" where you're supposed to feel it pulling you down, NOTHING happened. -Junior at DHS =]

AnonymousVisiter	I'm from Deming and I am 100% sure that it is haunted. I know from personal experience that if you have sex at their your child will be born retarted if he is born at all. I know of a couple of crazy guy that was living there for a while. He had a cult following. The girls worshipped him like he was christ. Anyway three of those girls became pregnant with his baby. All three of them were born retarted. And as far as the troll, I've seen a troll in deming but i haven't seen him at the holy cross. I have seen him wandering around the post office (another haunted location of Deming). Be careful if you have sex at the Cross and wear a condom because you might just give birth to a retard.

I lost 22 of my classmates in 2 years... the cross was burned... after it was cut down... deming is a hautned town from palomas mx all the way to silver city nm... ... if you haven't seen or heard its because you've been lucky... trust me to this day I still have presences following me... I am a nun... I have a strong relation ship with god... and our blessit mother in heaven... but evil does exsit... and it is defentley there in deming...

I lived it... who is your uncle... and did you actually see his name on it cause I have the pictures and a list of all the names that were on the cross... so what is his name???? I can e-mail the pictures of the cross when it was cut down and then put at the front of the school... like I said before I am a nun and the reason I became one was because the spirits would not leave me alone... that is why I don't like to go back to deming even if my family still live there...

AnonymousVisiter	I have been to the holly cross, or camp cody numerous times. I have done a small investigation there myself. Ya we took pictures, and recorded on a voice recorder. If your going to take photos, remeber there is a lot of dust in the air so pictures can not really define anything. We had nothing on our recorder. Its just a old scary place, is it haunted, honestly I will say no. Do I belive deming is a hell hole, yes to me its hell. the Holly cross has had numerous muders there, and the devil worshiping, but I really think its all in peoples heads, and there already scared before they get out there because of the stories that they hear about the place. Really I think its far from being haunted and more of just a story people like to say to scare there freinds.

AnonymousVisiter	This just in Holy Cross has been torn down. This was bascially a town monument and now the city of Deming decided to tear it down. It has been down for about 2 weeks now :/. they probably just took it down for the people going there tagging/drugs/killings/parties etc. yet it is a land mark a part of "history" and just tore it down it could have been turned into a museum or something but nothing was done to it so just knocked it down.

AnonymousVisiter	A few friends and I went out there one night with a video camera and recorded everything as we walked through it. Nothing happened until we went back upstairs. There were candles lit in the front room on that table looking thing and when we got home and watched the video, a big white light went floating across the screen (it was totally dark) and you can hear a lady saying "i'm gonna kill you " ! It's really scary, and I still have the video if anyone needs proof ! So yes, the holy cross has spirits in it, but look what happened and how the people died. Would you move on or stick around and be angry about what happened to you ? I know alot of us would be angry.

little_sqaw Last Seen: 10/6/2010 6:41:47 PM	I lived in Deming from Middle School all through High School (20 years ago) and have visited Holy Cross dozens of times. Although I am on the side of those who know it is haunted, I am saddened that it has been taken down. I have many chilling memories of the place as well as a few uneventful ones. The most memorable was a trip that included a floating white orb in the basement that disappeared under the stairwell, freshly turned gravesites and smoldering embers at the incinerator in between the main building and the graveyard. Oh, and of course voices in both the building and the graveyard. The tunnel remenants were very cool. The sacrafice room was always creepy and the sheriff has been visiting for a long time - even back then. I agree that someone should have considered turning it into a museum or something.

AnonymousVisiter	I lived in Deming for one year, 1977. My grandparents had purchased a house on Lead St. I don't think I can say the exact address. Now, granted it is years later so it may not look the same, but it was a white two story with a balcony running across the front. I don't recall a chimney but it had a fake fireplace in the living room. Since it was fake, a chimney wouldn't be needed so it may not have had one. Doors opened and closed on their own. Once, the kitchen door slammed so hard, the glass broke in it. Knocking was quite common. One chair wouldn't stay in its designated spot in an upstairs bedroom but traveled to an adjacent room. I spent one afternoon is the home alone that I will never forget. Nothing flying around, no apparitions but I knew, just knew, I was not alone. Too many noises and when you're really with a ghost, it isn't like the other times you're spooked. There is a distinct difference. Not fun for a nine yr. old. When my grandparents told the neighbors they were moving, they asked if it was because of the ghost because no one ever lives in the house longer than a year. Years later, when telling ghost stories one Halloween, a friend of mine started his story about the house on his Grandma's street. She lived in Deming, NM on a street called Lead. I think I scared him more when I told him all about the house, right down to the balcony and fake fireplace. Creepy, Years after that, my hubby came home from work, around Halloween time and he looked whiter than me and he's Hispanic. I asked him what was wrong and he said a co-worker was telling a ghost story about a friend's home that he stayed in once. A home in Deming, NM. It was a white two story with a balcony and a fake fireplace... If anyone knows anything about this house, please share. It's on the 300 block of Lead. South Lead, I believe.

AnonymousVisiter NEW MEXICO US	I do believe that the holy cross is haunted because i have heard alot of stories. Like when people go there they can hear things and feel thing, they get the chills up there spine. Alot of people have died over there because o being tourched. But u really have to go in there to judge if it is haunted or not. Because i have been in there it is really creepy, i got chills up my spine. There is stairs that keep going down. I believe that it is still flooded down there with water. So go check it out for your selfs and really see it it gives u the chills up your spine:)

AnonymousVisiter IDAHO US	I live in deming nm, i spent alot of time riding 4 wheelers or shooting rabbits in or near the river bed near the holy cross. I can remember this one time mid summer late at night me and my friends were out tipping back a few, and talking about whatever was going on at that time. there was alot of mesquite wood in the area so we had a fire going. i think one of my friends was telling us a story about a girl who we all knew oh so well, anyways about half way through his story we all hear a noise and of course freakin coyotes run rampant in deming, so we just went on listening to my friends exagerated but interesting story, we hear the noise again, it was dark but the moon was out we could see for miles all around and i thought it was the sheriffs office, coming to shut the party down so we turned the fire off and waited they'd never find us anyway or give up before to long. we waited for what seemed like a few moments and could see some headlights coming from holy cross road slow at first but the lights speeding up and appeared to be making a bead line right towards us, if you live in deming you know the river bed has old trails and roads you gotta follow unless your booney hopping, i was like holy snikeys they want us bad lets get the bleep outta here, i aint doing community service for trespassing. so we pushed our bikes into the brush, paired off and startied walking away from ground zero. i could see the lights were almost at our hangout spot, then i heard the most horrible noise ever. it sounded like one of my friends was screaming for help but in a frantic, not playing around way. i was scared but we ran back to see wat happened, i swear i dont know if it was my buzz or maybe i was just light headed from the 200 yard dash but my friend was laying on the ground but moving like he was being dragged. i couldnt freakin believe it, it took me a while to snap out of it then i ran for him. i remember everyone else was standing there watching him the same way i was frozen, i grabbed his arm and pulled him towards me but it felt like i was trying to stop a car from driving away he was leaving i couldnt understand why this was happening and i could feel legs were shaking so bad, i was scared and scared for my friend. he was yelling but his was lower and lower everytime. i let go of him and ran back to everyone else, we stared at each other and i could see in their eyes they were thinking we were next, i forgot about the bikes and my cell phone i had in my pocket, all i could think was oh man were done how the hell are we going to tell everyone at home, i saying small prayers in my head hoping my friend would just come back, i strained my eyes looking towards the drag marks but nothing finally lets get outta here lets tell somebody i could hear my friends, ya alright should we look for him, nobody answered, for a while then i heard crying low then bam there he was standing right in front of us sand all over him, lets go he said lets go please!! he didnt want to talk it scared me more, but we left we made it to town and we each went home, everybody is older now and ya i know they remember but, never say it.
