The Northern New York Paranormal Research Society (http://www.nnyprs.com) has conducted an investigation of the Old Gym here. This particular building has many unsubstantiated rumors. It was never an insane asylum, nor did it ever house a morgue of any type. Through the investigation, it was found that that building carries sound very well, including sounds from the outside. All audible phenomenon can be explained by this. NNYPRS has only found 2 reports of visual phenomenon. Both of these can be easily explained by the vast number of reflective surfaces in both areas of reported visuals. This can easily cause a person to "see" someone who isn't there. No NNYPRS Team member had a single personal experience throughout the investigation. After the gym, NNYPRS proceeded to the base cemetary. Based on a quick investigation there, NNYPRS believe paranormal activity may exist here. 2 investigators had personal experiences, and a few anomalous photos had been found. This will be reported on the Channel 5, WPTZ news on Halloween, 2008.

Reports of "inexplicable" goings on are nothing new at Plattsburg Barracks (AKA Plattsburg AFB.  Such reports were old news when I lived there in the early 1970s.

We lived in quarters #103 U.S. Oval and there is absolutely no question in my mind the building is haunted.  These quarters have three floors and a basement for 21 rooms.  The third floor was at one time used for servant's quarters and accessed by a rear servant's staircase which was common at the time the house was built (1870s if I recall correctly.)

At the time we had a large agressive 70lb dog who was very inquisitive and wanted to get into everything... he would not however go to the third floor... you could not drag him up there.  The third floor was accessed via the servant's staircase, and from the first day we were there, I noticed the hair on the back of my neck would stand up when I passed the landing on that staircase going to the 3rd floor.

We would also hear loud noises from the third floor... now I realize old houses make noises... but these were loud enough that on several occasions I thought someone had gone up the outside fire escape and broken in.. so loud that on two instances I went up to the third floor with a rifle to investigate the noise... the dog our course would not go near the third floor and looked at me like I was crazy for going up...

Anyway, from what I saw and what happened there is no question in my mind the house was/is haunted.

Years later I met someone who had also lived in the same quarters... I asked him if he had ever heard or seen anything... he sort of turned a little pale and simply said "you saw it too?"  That was all he would say.

The area where the old quarters were located on the base had, I'm told been used during the War Between The States as a prison for Confederate soldiers ... sort of a concentration camp or extermination camp similar to the ones at Elmira and Rock Island and others designed to kill as many of the Confederate soldiers as possible... which they did very well.  Anyway, I'm convinced for various reasons that that is the source of the haunting on that part of the base.
