Been there. Cool building owned by the University of North Carolina and occupied by some kind of male social fraternity whose members are "selected" in their Junior or Senior years. I am not sure what they do but they seem to have some good parties.

Just so you know. There was no duel. It is a story that came about after a student ghost story contest held by the Daily Tarheel Student Paper back in the late 80`s. While it is a very cool place to visit, walk around back and see the wooded walking trails, it is far from haunted.
Funny thing is... there is a building in Chapel Hill that has had strange events for decades... and it is not listed on this site.

I went around there, saw the supposed "death rock" and basically creeped around in the woods looking for anything awesome that would prove the place haunted, negative. I mean I thought the coolest part about it was that frat boys can live in an old castle. also the person who said it was a '80s ghost story contest is correct. If u want to visit there then I would go up the wooded hill off the trail. Good paintballing in the area but don't trespass and be careful to not shoot ghimgoul or any houses they pop out of nowhere.

No frat boys live in Gimghoul; it's a private residence. There's nothing scary or haunted about it. It's open to the neighborhood; people take their children there to play.

It is most definitely not open to the public, nor is it owned by the University. The woods around the Castle has been deeded over to the University with the stipulation they never try to develop the property.
