A truly scary place but the police patrol it often and will arrest trespassers

T'was just there tonight, July 5th, 2008. Haven't been there for 20 years, it was hard to find. The road to the bridge has been closed, and all the trees have grown up around it. There is a barrier placed across the road that the actual bridge is on. Driving to the bridge is impossible. Had to park the car, get out, and use the flashlight to walk to the bridge, (it was about 11:15 P.M.) The bridge is still there, with a nice clear view of the creek flowing below it. Walked over the bridge and up the road a distance. Deserted. I remember back in the 80's when news about this location was in the newspapers. Cults, suicides, it became a local hotspot for teenagers to cruise by and see, (even me!) This road is out in the country, far from any "gangland". The surrounding town of Salem is a small village, there are no "inner-city" gangs here anyway. I remember when all the news about "satanic cult" activity started up, coincidentally, Motley Crue had just released an album that same year, that had the same symbols and markings that were found at this location. Back then, it seemed to be the rage to paint rebellious and offensive symbols at any location where the odds of getting caught weren't high. Egypt road seems to be a prime place for that. During my 45 minute visit tonight, I saw no gangs, ghosts, or even cars passing by. Sorry, I didn't hear a baby cry either. It's just an old abandoned bridge on an old country road. My guess is, with all the added traffic from thrill seeking teenagers, vandals, and scary stories that horrify their innocent young children, the people who live on the road begged the police and local government to close off the road that leads to the bridge, to stop all the disrespectful people from visiting there. If the area was so haunted and terrible, everyone who lives there would have moved away long ago. It obviously has drawn in a lot of nuts who crave to visit the location. It sure wasn't as an "exciting" or "scary" place to see tonight, as it was when I was 17 Then again, maybe I've just grown up.

I went to school with a girl that lived on egypt rd. and moved to columbiana after "the cult" moved in across the bridge. she always told us that "the cult" was steeling blond hair blue eyed babys and throwing them over the bridge to there death. ive went to the bridge a few time while in high school and never heard a thing. the only thing i ever walked away with is a bunch of bug bites.

My husband and I went out there as well.  There is no way the bridge is haunted.  First of all there is only a five foot drop from the bridge to the water.  Give me a break!  The bridge was supposed to be covered in satanic cult spells and all we saw was a bunch of things like "John loves Mary" and all that.  No EVP's.  No unusual pictures.  Nothing.  The other legend we heard about was if you crossed the bridge and kept walking down the road, you would just disappear.  We crossed-we kept walking-we came back-we went home.  End of story.

I heard that a couple of hippies were moving through town with their baby. They stopped for a picnic on the bridge. The father hippie went to the car to get something, and on his way back to them he heard the mother hippie yell out, "No!" He ran to see what had happened and he saw the baby laying in the water below the bridge. Then they disappeared and were never seen again. I heard there were many of cases like this all around the world. When you visite the bridge you can hear the screams of the mother and the cry of the baby.

If the mother and father hippies were never seen or heard from again, then how does anybody know that they had a picnic on that bridge, and that the father went away for a minute, and that the mother screamed "NO!", and that the baby was dead in the water? LOL!

A few months back me and some friends went to this place. Just the drive down the road was scary enough. It was only last winter so it was not to long ago. but seeing how it was winter there was no overgrowth and the path/road continued up to a hill. As we were approaching the hill all of us one after another began to see a semi translucent child dancing at the bottom of the hill where the path begins to climb up. Needless to say we ran the long haul back to where the car was parked. Just last night me and some more friends went back. I told this new group of people what had happened the last time i was there in winter. We got out of the car and began walking to the bridge when we began to hear a distinctive drum banging off in the distance. we were all a bit scared of this at first and eventually denounced it as a party on the other side of the woods. WE began to walk again. Because the girls we weer with were so mortified we decided to only walk to the bridge,No farther. We walked to the bridge and back to the car without seeing or hearing anything other than the distant drum beats. We began to drive back up twords the city of Salem. we worked up enough courage to turn around and go back. when we returned we found that the music we heard previously had stopped. we began to walk. after passing the bridge one of the girls we were with claimed to have seen a dark figure cross the path. Seeing how i did not have contacts in or my glasses on, i took her word for it. Her and I went back to the car and waited for the other two. Low and behold the police showed up. He got us out of the car, took our names, followed protocall etc. He then asked us why we were there. We told him that we thought it was haunted and we wanted to come check it out. He told us some of the legends of the road. I swear none of these are made up but it seemed like it all fell into place after he said this. He said that when he was a child and the road was still a road they would sledride down it in the winter. he said that one day when they were sledding there a boy hit a tree twords the bottom of the hill and died. this instantly clicked in my head as the child i had seen dancing months ago. he also said that satanic cults once came down here and performed ritual music. This may just be guess work but we had assumed thats what the drums were. He also said that cults would sacrafice animals there. we apologized to the officer got in the car and drove home. On our drive home we began to talk about how scared we were and how glad we were that the two of us had gone back to the car. The other two who had come up after the cops showed up said that right before the cops got there they saw a almost human figure cloaked in black. I am a verrry sceptical person and would in no way have believed it if it hadnt happened to me. I kind of dont believe it now. I do believe however that there are dark forces at work on that little old township roadd off of Egypt Rd. I swear to whoever reads this that i will NEVER go back to this place as long as i live. I suggegest you do not go either. I cant help but think what may have happened if thwe cop had not showed up. I often think what if maybe that dark cloaked figure had intended to cause us harm. I will never go back there again. It was the scariest thing that has ever happended to me.

My Mom said her and friends used to sled ride on that hill, also. It used to be a section of Pine Lake Rd. that connected Egypt Rd. to Beaver Creek Rd. She said the reason that road was closed was because in the winter time it was too difficult or dangerous to drive on that hill, going up or down, which was why they brought Beaver Creek Rd. out to Rt. 14.

Just drove down there the other night.  I get spooked simply driving down that road, so I obviously didn't stop and walk over to the bridge.  I live nearby and remember many stories about this road, and the bridge in particular.  There is the usual "Crybaby Bridge" story of a teenage mother throwing her baby into the river and you can supposedly still hear the baby crying at midnight.  In the late 80's there was also a satanic cult that practiced in the woods off Egypt Road, sacrificing animals. My brother told me about the mutilated animal corpses in garbage bags that his boy scout troop found while cleaning the litter up in the area.  Also recall one year that there were police escorting my girl scout troop in the Memorial Day Parade in the tiny town nearby because the cult was supposedly looking for blonde haired blue eyed girls to sacrifice.  Not sure how much of all this I believe, but it was enough to completely freak me out as a kid.  My friend lived on the next road and always wanted to camp out in their covered patio in the summer.  I refused every time and reminded her that her house overlooked Egypt Road!

I was born and raised in Salem.Iam 56 now and still live here in Salem.I grew up on the tales of Egypt Road.Reids Hill,Johnny no face,CryBaby Bridge and the glowing green fog. When I learned the tale of crybaby bridge it was still in use.I have heard sounds from there but not all the time. I found that when the wind blows a certain way through there I have heard a whine sound. Also at one time that area was loaded with frogs. Frogging, gigging them or hooking them they have been known to scream like a baby!! Most frogging is done at night at least it was when I was growing up.

I also grew up in Salem, in fact my grandparents used to live on Painter rd which is right by Egypt. I've been down there numerous times and hiked all through those woods. I've even camped out there overnight on several occassions. I personally never had any paranormal experiences or heard any crying while there. I did discover a few old mines down there, and also a building that can't be seen from the road with a dirt floor.(I would assume it was used to store the mining equipment) I will warn anyone that goes down there that alot of the area is private property, so make sure you have permission before you go wandering through the woods. I also remember the rumors about a "cult" that was operating down there because they got so bad my elementary principal actually made an announcement over the loudspeaker telling everyone that it was untrue.(He also lived down on Egypt). I personally do believe in the paranormal, but not that anything is going on down there. I would like to know if anyone has done research on the area to see if any of the legend is true.

Once while riding in someone else's car on Egypt road I turned around to look behind us and saw 2 people dressed in all black, head to toe, no skin visible. They ran across the road from the swamp side to the hill side

Me and my friends were on break from classes and decided to ride out there and my one friend stayed in the car as me and my other friend went onto the bridge take note this is like 1 in the afternoon. We could see everything around us and there was nothing around. When we were on the bridge we heard this old radio voice as if someone was playing the radio but you could tell it was from back n the day. I said to my friend do you hear that? she said yyes very creepy. I said im outta hear as soon as I stepped off the bridge the radio voice stoped. I stepped on the bridge again and we heard it. It was bone chilling creepy we took off back to the car. I believe its haunted. Just this week a womens body was found on the bridge burned to death. They had to use dental records to identify it. True story It is now labled "a suspicious death"

I remember the blond hair and blue eyes cult deal! I was in kindergarden in the mid 80's at a local school down the road from there, it was pretty freaky sometimes they would bring us in from recess early because of suspicious white vans! Ive partyed at that bridge alot throughout the yrs and am surprised nobody has mentioned the car stalling at a certian time of night if you park at the bridge! Its a good way to scare the hell out of a date but it did actually happen to me once, after a couple minutes it started right up though! Coincidence? Probably, but it freaked me out at the time!!

this is funny stuff! we used to go up the hill sitting on the hood of our cars smoking weed and drinking beer. we may have been the scariest things out there. never bothered anyone and no one bothered with us. this would have been in the 70s.  never heard or saw anything remotely weird especially fitting any of the goofy stories.

I'm 23 years old and iv lived on Egypt rd all my life and would ride my quad in those woods. So you can say I know the area and the bridge like the back of my hand. Iv heard far to many gay azz stories about that old damn bridge and I can only say that some are true. I'll start with the earliest. As I was reading some of the other post I came across the story of the cult in the 80's. Now there are known facts for sure that this is true. They would sacrifice cats and other domestic animals. Why? I got no fing idea. Not my specialty. Reeds hill I believe is the original name of the road. The blue light that people say they have seen in the water of beaver creek, the only best possible explanation with some evan remotely possible cause a blue or green light, would also be the known fact that lease chemical once dumbed mirex in beaver creek. And for people who eat the fish or the deer they kill should stop. the most recent episode on the great cry baby bridge saga, is of the poor lady that was found burnt to a crisp. God rest her soul. Now I'm not sure if the authorities have come to the conclusion of a suicide or a murder, so next time your buddy tells you a story of the bridge you will know some facts on what really has happened on or near the bridge.

I grew up about a half mile from the bridge and it's swampy surroundings. As young kids, we used to hike through the woods and swamps and spend long summer days in the area near the bridge. Later on in my high school days, it became a great area to "park", drink beer and scare our girlfriends. We also used to drive our cars or run up "Reeds Hill" (when it was still accessible) which is east of the bridge and part of the abandoned roadway. I don't know about paranormal activity, but the area is very spooky even during the daytime. I'm sure that the legends are just stories, but it's fun to talk about them anyway. The recent true story (October 2010) of the woman who was burned to death on the bridge will only add to the lore about the area surrounding the bridge.

The woman wasn't burned to death on the bridge, she was found about ten feet away from her van, which was on the side of the road.. not the bridge.  And police have never revealed how or why the woman died, just that it was suspicious.

The woman found burned by the enterance to the bridge has been ruled a suicide, although I do not believe it was ever published in the paper as such. After hearing the back story of the woman from a close police officer friend, she deserved to go out there and burn herself.

I live a few miles from Egypt Rd., but haven't been there in years.  I think this particular part of the country has more than it's share of superstition. I also think if youvisit these creepy areas with hysterical types, it can affect your own experience.  Cry Baby bridges are everywhere.  Must have something to do with the wind and/or the water, or maybe the construction of these bridges.   I do think the cult rumors were true.  This entire area had problems with cults a few years ago.  Hopefully, they have all disbanded.

I have lived in Salem for more than 20 years and frequently drive Egypt Rd.  I have heard all the stories. While I do not believe there is much truth to any of the stories, it can be a creepy place just because it is a swamp and there can be some strange people visiting the remote area. People have fun playing games down there and scaring others. In the late 90's we saw people running around in black Ninja outfits hiding behind trees, running out across the road, throwing stars at each other. They were real people playing around in the daytime. I am sure they got a big laugh out of scaring unsuspecting motorists as they darted in and out of the woods. Nowadays we see hunters, and trash dumpers.

i was out there tonight. i'm crying as i'm typing this. it was about 9pm. and itms winter time. there was a full moon. we drove down the road once, and parked infront of the iron bar that blocked off the road the bridge is actually on. we didn't see anything. we drove down the road a second time, and did the same thing. we still saw nothing. we drove down the road a third time, and did the same thing. except on the third time something strange happened. it was very dark outside. we saw footprints in the snow leading back to the bridge that wasn't there the first two times. i heard a high pitch scream, but it was very faint in the distance, followed by a distant babys cry. i then saw a white mist rising from the creek onto the bridge in the shape of a person. it was very bright. almost glowing. it started walking toward the car. i didn't think much of it because the figure was still pretty far back. next thing i know the smoke was RIGHT NEXT TO MY WINDOW!! i freaked out, and we tried to drive away. the car stalled. when we got off the road, we noticed something on the window! handprints! needless to say, i will never do that again.
