Browns Springs is a very widely known in and around Thackerville for people from Texas dropping off dead body`s there in the spring up one of the hills is also an abandoned cemetery that is from the 1800`s when you go up there and listen you cant hear anything it is dead silence no birds or insects just silence. It is said that on a tour to the springs a girl was pulled to a grave site by something that wasn’t there. There has also been sightings of trees bleeding and sightings of a little girl standing by the headstone marked "Butch". Faces have been seen in photos taken here.

Many unwary travelers have been robbed and killed. The men in this clan of
evil people would imprison, torture, rape, and eventually kill any unwary women that they had a chance to capture. The patriarch of the family would "Break In" the females born to the clan and then pass them around to the other uncles, brothers, cousins, etc. The
story goes that one day a Choctaw girl was abducted by the patriarch and raped. The girl fled after she escaped and the elders of her family came back, in the night, and captured the patriarch. The girls family staked the evil man to the ground and sliced open his
belly so that Hattak Offi/The Man Dog of that area could have a good meal with out having to work for it. Another name for Hattak Offi is Nalusa or Nalushka Falaya, which translates to Long Evil Being or Long Wicked Person.(Bigfoot?)

The girls family came back the next morning and sure enough the evil man`s soft organs, were missing and his entrails were spread all over the place. The girl`s family then took the body of the evil patriarch and threw it into Brown`s spring to curse the spring to any that would rely on it for water. It is said that the evil patriarch`s family still has descendants in the area, and that his ghost haunts that area at night. I learned this in a gang rape investigation in January of 1985 when I worked at Healdton Police Dept. I arrested a descendant of the original family on a rape complaint and in the ensuing investigation dug up some really wild sounding stuff.

The area is home to some pretty wild stuff.  It's STRONGLY recommended that you not take anything from the cemetery, as Hattak Offi, who is apparently the guardian of the resting souls there, will deliver his wrath unto you.

Leeper Lake, which is also in the area, is allegedly home to a monster.  In the same neck of the woods, the KKK is reported to hold meetings.  Stay away from areas where you see ladders around trees.  The stories say that they're hiding in these trees, waiting for young thrill-seekers to make an unwise move.

There's also another story I've heard from the people who work at the nearby Casino (a friend of mind used to work there, and has heard plenty about it)-- if you take two beers to the cemetery, have one person open and take a drink of their beer, walk back down the hill, and have the second person open and take a drink at the bottom, you'll find that the person who took a drink in the cemetery's beer has turned to water, and the other person's is still beer.  I've tried it, and it didn't work, but if you find out otherwise, please let me know.

In addition to all of this, as if it weren't enough, a man named Butch has been there and taken lots of pictures.  He strongly suggests not to venture into this veritable hellhole after dark.  I've been there several times, and it's plenty scary during the day.  After dark adventures have led to the strangest encounters me and my friends have ever had at this place with the so-called "other side".  Weird place, man.  Weird place.

Been there multiple times at night and during the day. Did not see anything to make me believe in any of those stories. I did find a dead dog by the red river and a bunch of fire ants around there. I was there with a couple of marines that live in the are we were all in force recon so if anything was around we would have known it. Did not find any tracks except for wild boar. Now I did go to an old Indian school and that place had some strange stuff going on with it.

My friends and I have been there quite a few times. We`ve heard whispering, crashes in the woods, and just tonight one of us had the feeling of being slapped on the back of the arm. You always have the feeling of being watched there. Rumor has it that if you carry a beer to the cemetary and take a drink, it`ll be water by the time you come back down the trail. Weird place man, weird place.

Bleeding Oak trees? Hmmm... I don`t believe that. Also, by swimming with your camera and phone on you, the water would damage them, causes them to act funny...

Nothing would surprise me about that place. What's the deal with the monster and the ghost light that I've heard about?

there are stories of the 'man-dog' in and around brown springs. type of bigfoot? Had an experience out there in Feb. 2003. myself and three friends aroused something up with a loud howl. We heard a reply of a long howl with a moan at the end. 1st reply from the texas side of the red river. 2nd reply from the ok side. Whatever it was, crossed the river. found a limb break from a tree that had to be a 5-6 inch diameter. Wasn't there when we passed by it the first time. wierd place man, wierd place.

Some friends of mine went with a girl who may be sensitive to that sort of thing, and she said as long as you're respectful you'll be alright. But I won't say that nothing bad will happen to you. I've heard that taking anything from the graveyard will result in consequences that will pretty much ruin your life.

So far, I can say that this is the scariest place I've ever been.  Night or day.  But especially night.  Exercise extreme caution and discretion when going at night.  Rumor has it The Klan has their meetings around there.  Don't go around any tree(s) where you can see a ladder.  That's where they like to hide.

My friends and I are planning to go out there pretty soon...my mom has been out there recently and taken some pictures and there are faces in all of them...i mean at least one face in each picture, even more in some of them. In the pictures there are dead indians, soldiers, and a little girl....there is even the devils face in some of them...and when she emailed them to me at college so that I could look at them, I opened the first picture and then all of a sudden my computer shut down before I could even get a good look at the pic after it uploaded...the whole thing is creepy...every thing about that place is just creepy.

I am a local that has lived 5 miles from brownsprings all my life. My freind and I decided to drive up there one night just for kicks. Once at the top we just sat and looked around for a bit joking. We saw nor heard anything. On the way back down the narrow road at about the half way point my truck tire rolled up the side of the hill causing it to flip over on its top. My freind and I crawled out of the truck and ran. I have driven on rough off road conditions all of my life. I did not lose control. Something took control of the gas and the steering wheel making it roll. We returned 2 or 3 hours later with help to recover my truck. To this day I will drive passed it but never up it.

I visited the Brown Springs location today at noon, and if you go about 2-3 miles to the north and east, you will find a horse track. Its really nice and big, but closed. You can really get lost in the scenery of that place, I really recommend just going and driving around to see the area, really beautiful. I want to try and knock on a Brown Springs "neighbor" and see what they say, will report back.

i have partied there many of times late at night and on into the early morning. Nothing scary or wierd has happened to me or any of my friends that have been there hundreds of times, the burning and red marks on that girls arm is prolly from the bull neddles, i have walked through them time after time going up there in shorts at night, yes they do burn and leave red marks. only thing i have ever heard about this place is that i know a guy that lives in thackerville and he won't even drive by the place, reason being that he said he stole a grave from there when he was thirteen and put it in his closet so his grandma couldn't find it. The next morning he started to feel bad about it and he knew that his grandma would whip him if she found out, so when he opened his closet the grave was gone and when he asked his grandma about she had no idea wat he was talking about. He then returned to the cemetary and the grave was put back into the same exact place as if it had never been moved. ta da. the end.

i'm from gainesville and there is nothing supernatural about brown springs. any of the stuff up there is from all the marijuana growers in the area. you have to be cautious up there that you don't wander into one of their patches and get yourself shot. that's all stories and things the druggies have put there to try to get people to stay away. common knowledge around here. you don't mess around on the river.

so, i went to brown springs today with one female friend. i am female. we are pretty cute. and, i didn't think anything of it. she said it'd be scary, but i thought it wouldn't be. and it wasn't. however, we did see marijuana treese and plants. and you could clearly see where they picked and snipped the buds off. the cemetary is now fenced off and private. and when we reached the top, i could barely breathe that it actually felt like someone pinching my throat tube thing. anyhow, i wouldn't have gone if i would've known the ordeals and whatnot. just thought it was another ghost tale. and there was an old small cowdog blocking the road to the hill. he would not get up from laying when we approached him closely with the car. he was also there when we left. oh, and right by the new fence for the cemetary, there was a brand new gravestone with fresh flowers and engraving. didn't think anything of it until now. check it out.

I've lived in Thackerville all my life and could tell many stories of ghost and strange happenings.  Like the time when I was small and me and mom were coming home from the back way and passed Brown Springs.  I'll never forget it, the Brightest fire I've ever seen and it was a Cross burning.  Now that I'm older I have classmates who had grandparents who were in the KKK and one of them was a Grand Master.  My friend, would probably not like that I told of this.  But he still has the Outfit and things from that time.  I only wonder of all the things, that I dont know.  I was once caught sneaking around down at the Springs.  Im always curious you see and as I was walking, I fell into a hole in the ground.  I was stupid then and of course a blond with blue eyes.  I sat and cryed and by some strange chance, guess who found me.  My friend and at the time when he did, he was out of breath and was rushing me out of the hole and kept saying hurry up, hurry up its almost dark.  I didnt get it then, but now I do.  He didnt want them to know I was sniffing around.  I also found the tunnel, which I have never told anyone about but my Mom and we have not been there for more than 16 years.  It led right to an old house, which is no longer there by the way.  I've seen things and heard things that make the hair stand up on your neck.  I just dont believe in things unless I am there to witness them myself.  I've walked in the grave yard at night and felt people around me but only a couple of times, did I feel a threat.  I was knocked down by something once and it scared me so bad that I didnt come back for 3 years.  I finally got up enough nerve to go back.  Then one night I walked up to the graveyard with a flashlight with my mom and we heard a child crying and could not find her.  My mom of course is one to belive in talking to ghosts or the presence of one and etc. and she started talking and then the crying stopped and between me and my mom standing beside each other.  In between us, we both felt something shift between us and something touched both our hands.  I didnt go back for another 5 years.  Too many things have happened and I dont know sometimes if it was just my imagination or something more on the ghost issue.  But I do know about the KKK and about the Devil Worship stuff.  Sometimes I've went in the day time, sat and sketched different things on paper and watched the wind blow the leaves around, its peaceful at times.  But the last few times I 've been there, I've had strange experiences again, that face of the child.  I've seen her and felt her with me and my mom.  I wish I knew who she was, what happened and her story.   Its just all so strange to me, I dont usually believe in these things, until it happend to me.  I dont believe the bleeding trees and such and yes there have been drug dealers and such.  I have also thought that I saw bigfoot and many have seen similar things camping on the river.  Growing up on the river, you hear weird stuff as well.  Its only the stories that make it creepy, but go and see for yourself.  I went many times and sometimes nothing happened and then other times something I couldnt explain.  Everyone has stories, But I'll save some for later.

Been working right around the corner at the truckstop Thackerville casino. Went to Brown Springs last thursday during the day, three of us, all white males in our 30's! First we found a brand new pair of jeans and a t-shirt right by the over flow swamp on the south side of the road?!? Also found some bones there - not sure what of?!? The springs were covered in sprouting tree seeds, leaving a green blanket across the top, underneath this blanket was beautiful clear water! As we walked to the cemetary, we saw numerous small lizards and it did begin to get much quieter as we approached - and when we entered the cemetary it was indeed dead silent! I took numerous pictures throughout the cemetary, and will be looking them over today. Also will be returning this coming week. For one, any destruction to a cemetary is just plain wrong! You deserve bad luck and I will even go as far as wishing it upon you! Those could be your ancestors, for all you know! Second, I am sure that the Klan, as well as growers, frequent the area! As they do many areas of the such, in the deep south! All I can suggest is that colored people might want to stay away - and don't go near any plants! (not racist, just a suggestion) Last, as we left, an elderly man pulled up in an old red pickup. Very nice fellow, who owns 85 acres at the top of the hill above the cemetary. He has lived in the parts since 1924 and had many stories to tell! He was once the land manager of Leeper Lake. He said it used to be open to the public, until "the victims got togethor and bought it". That is exactly what he said, "the victims" When I asked him to explain, he said that "fifty or so, very wealthy victims had gotten togethor and purchased the land and lake and made it private". When I asked him why he refered to them as victims, he got a bit upset and said "cause that's what they are!" He said never to enter that land or else - I think I'll take his word on that one! Otherwise a very nice fellow. Strange thing was, that when we left, he drove off as well - as though he came, only to talk to us?!?!?!? Interesting trip, can't wait to return this week, will update and try to load any good pictures I get! Good Day, Happyokie

went to thackerville on hog pen road two weeks ago. went to look for signs of hogs. when we got out of the car near the river we started to hear beating sounds like a generator or drum beats. we thought maybe it might be a generator or one of those oil rigs. but when we got into the car to drive up a hundred yards or so the sound stopped. everytime we got out we heard it. got into the car no more. creepy. who knows what that was.

You are all trespassing on "OUR PROPERTY" it's been fenced off several times do to people trashing the 40 acres we own....be respectfull of what belongs to others and the families of those who are buried there...we know for a fact that there are several graves that "ARE NOT" marked due to weather and the age of the cemetary. There are locks on both the gates and if you get stuck in the sand out there.....oh well, I guess you are in trouble.........

If I am correct, a man from Gainesville whose last name was Pulte once owned the property and was the one who tapped the springs installing the pipes where the water used to flow on the north side of the road.  Rumor has it the cemetery started with twin teen Indian girls who died there first and their graves were marked with twin Juniper trees that were uprooted by a tornado around 1970.

All this talk about people damaging the cemetary is really upsetting to me!  I would be interested in seeing the cemetary due to the fact that it is very old!  I am Choctaw myself and this is a indian burial ground for those of you who don't know that and those are never places to mess with no matter what!  I feel a little betrayed that people are vandalizing the property.  It is gated, fenced and priviate property you know!  Those people who own it could have you thrown in Jail...does that not worry you at all?  If the person who owns the land would be so kind as to let me see this I would like too but I would never trespass on your property so please let me know if you ever have the time.  Thank You and you may contact me at miss_chievous03@hotmail.com

Thank You for taking up the issue of this property being privately owned and being respectfull of our loved ones who rest there in peace. None of them died violent deaths according to family histories, several were young infants who just could not survive. Those were hard times for our native brothers and sisters and the pioneers who chose to settle in the rough territory or chose not to settle....but the early 1800,s "were not" easy for anyone. Most locals were buried either at home or in a larger public cemetary or church yard.....Several family members have offered to help clean up the graveyard and we'd like to get the  Historical Society involved, but it's hard when people want to go up there for a "thrill" and desicrate what is not theirs......Just be respectfull of others and our Ancesters PLEASE

Several of my Burkhart family members are buried there. Two that I'm sure of. There's probably more.

Paul Burkhart – 2 year-old Son of Worley Burkhart

Tis a little grave but O have care

For world wide hopes are buried there

How much of light how much of joy

Is buried in a darling boy

George Willard Burkhart - Father of 9 children. Only 4 of his children lived past 3 years old - Riley, Eunice Ira, Worley, and Charles.

Husband of Olive D. Burkhart

Born 10/4/1834 in Pennsylvania

Died 9/2/1884 in Chickasaw Nation, now Brown Springs, Love, Thackerville, OK

There are still plenty of Burkhart's in Love County, OK and Gainesville, TX thanks to George Willard.

George's son Worley (Worl) headed south across the river to Gainesville where he stayed. He had many children.

Eunice Ira (my great grandfather) settled in what is now Thackerville after moving from Brown Springs to Gainesville after 1900 and then back to Love County after 1910. Burkhart Road and Old Burkhart Road in Thackerville are named after him and where he and his family settled. Most  of the land he purchased is still owned by Burkhart's or those related.

Riley (Rile) moved to Houston, where he died in 1933 without marrying or having children.

Charles moved to California, had a few kids, and never came back to OK.

My great uncle, EC "Pappy" Burkhart, used to visit the the cemetery frequently to take care of the family's headstones. That stopped when he was killed in a auto accident in 1979.

Walked up there alone yesterday around 7ish PM. Friends stayed in the car.. I have a 5 minute video walking all the way up and around some graves and showing some where you can read them.. birds were chirping the trees were moving a bit from the cool breeze.. I mean... if your afraid of birds I guess you should probably stay away from there... its a shame iggnorant people ruin the place by tearing it up. Really pretty land back there.. id definitely go again and spend more time. Maybe next time a mutant squirrel will come out or something.. -Texas resident

The last time I went there I saw a noose hanging from one of the taller trees on the hill leading to the cemetery. I had been there plenty of times and have never seen anything like that there before, so when I saw that I turned around and left, plus it was at night. I didn't feel like dying that night lol

I went up there today. I was too scared to actually go up the path to the cemetery. But the atmosphere was weird, almost airless. The only odd thing I encountered driving down the road was a couple mattresses lying around. Also, a door, ripped up carpet, a trash bag (with something in it, don't know what it was), and an animal carcass that was opened and had bones scattered all over. Looked like a cow or horse. I will go back one day and actually travel up the path to the cemetery. But I did not see any ladders on trees or bleeding trees or anything like that.
