the article is all wrong I'll tell you what I Know hoffman and his wife had tried to have kids several times but the kids kept dying. hoffman desided to adopt and and at about the times his kids would die he would kill one of the adopted. soon they adopted a little girl and hoffmans wife had had enough one night hoffman and his wife got in a fite and she killed him. the daughter ran off into the woods scared and hoffmans wife took a lantern and went to look for her after searching night after night she killed herself. the spook light that is seen very frequently is said to be the wife lookin for the daughter and hoffmans mansion is haunted by all the childrens screams and hoffmans dark spirit himself.

Sir, I was wanting to know if you or the government owned the property. I've heard of my friens going on the property and the state police telling them to get off the property, and them saying it was government land. I don't want to go on the land if someone owns the land but i do drive by there sometimes when im in joplin and i was just wondering and please email me the hole story so i will know what really happened on your familys property (wttsrbt@yahoo.com) please include your name.

The above stories are very humorous.

Here is some factual information about Hoffman Mansion.  Yes there is a cemetary on the property and yes it was demolished in March of 1998.  I used to be a student in a college in Joplin and there are lots of stories behind the old mansion.  Some friends and myself did a history on the place and actually got to tour the mansion before it was torn down.  There were some distant relatives that lived on the property in an old carriage house that they had remodeled.  With all the legends of the place, they used to hold haunted houses there on Halloween.

The mansion was built by an indian man named Benjamin Quapaw.  They had several children and there was a large family.  That is who is buried in the cemetary.  The home was later a boys home, but there is no stories in any documentation of the family that had the boys home ever killing any of the children.

Hearing those stories are really kinda funny. One of my friends lived in the caretakers house when we where like in elem. and middle school. She and her family were the distant releatives. All though we would kreep ourselves out sometimes when we all stayed the night by going in the mansion. I don't believe anything really paranormal ever happened. Ya we might have said we saw something or heard something, but I think it was just our minds playing trick.

Also my four grade teacher was one of the works there when it was a boys home, we always asked him questions about it and he would just laugh and say that those were all just lies to give us kids something to do or wonder about.

there are 9 unmarked childrens graves in the cemetary. Also there are two smaller graves that someone had put their hands in the cement before it dried and someone has tried to scribble a name into it before it dried. it is very hard to read. also, charles hoffmans grave is visible and many ppl from the quapaw family. there is a little shed or something similar on the property. inside are two wooden bunk beds. they appear to be pretty old. there are some basket ball courts to the left of the house and a storm cellar. i personally went in the cellar and its kinda weird down there... - also there are some trails out by the house that go to the woods where we found an old desk.. and a wrecked car.. they believe its an old studabaker... idk. but it was stripped and burned and it is wrapped around a tree. i wish i had visited it before the mansion was burned down. im very interested in this place and would very much like to see any pics of the mansion. my email is smile22_22_22@yahoo.com hit me up if u have anything

I have been there once when I was in college back in 1997.  I grew up in Galena, Kansas and now live in Baxter Springs.  It was very creepy in the old house, and the cemetary made you feel very uncomfortable.  I don't know if it is true, but it was scary to be there.  I remember the Indian Police making us leave the area.

I am a distant relative of the Hoffman's (Tracks/Quapaw's)and am very close to some of the family members. I grew up going out there for birthday parties, etc... The house was built during the Lead and Zinc mining days. I believe it was built by Grandpa Quapaw, he had many children and there are many children's grave in thier cemetary just as there are in my family cemetary... TWO words.... SMALL POX... was a disease that killed many children, along with other childhood disease's... not a man named Hoffman... When you make up stories about families you need to remember that we sometimes hear them and sometimes it is so ASBURD that we have to laugh... the boys home leased the property in the 80's and when the lease was up it went back to the family. My uncle lived out there for a while and then grandma Jean Ann kicked everyone out and had the house demolished into the pool probably about 7-8 years ago maybe. It is not haunted, I spent many nights out there went riding swimming and nothing ever bothered us.

me and a couple of friends went looking for Hoffman Mansion on our graduation night in 1987. we were from commerce ok. it's east of Qwapaw. after searching the country roads all night long, we finally found it and realized that we had been going in circles all night and had passed it several times, not even knowing it. it sat off the road just a little ways, but in the pitch darkness, could not see it. we stopped and got out and was looking around when a man came out of a house close to the mansion and asked if he could help us. we had our school binders in the truck and told him we were doing a research paper on the mansion and asked we if could go inside. he took us in and showed us around. there was no electricity or running water, but while we were upstairs, we suddenly heard a beeping from downstairs. we all stopped and looked at each other, and the man said that it was strange because it sounded like it was coming from one of the smoke alarms, but none of them had batteries in them. by the time we got back downstairs, it had stopped. we thought it was pretty cool.

I have heard several stories about this place. I have visited it MANY times! I used to live about 15 min. away from the mansion. From what I have heard, Hoffman went crazy and killed the boys and then himself. There are several unmarked graves in the cemetary no bigger than a child's size. There are several stones in there that are marked such as the Quapaw family. Honestly, I have been pretty freaked out there. I have taken several pictures and only one came out and has faces in it. Clearly, there is a little boy's face on the lefthand side of my pic. Creepy but idk! I have seen and heard things enough to make me run back to the gate. I feel very uncomfortable there. Idk what is true or false about Hoffman's mansion but it is a creepy place. Someone watches the property now and will ask you to leave so don't get caught going over the gate!

Where is it located? A friend and I accidently found it one night in 1989 while looking for the spooklight. No one believed us when we told them about it. I'd like to go back in the daylight! Thanks, Julie

in 1966-68 my boy friend was the care taker at the Hoffman Mansion. Hank and Sammi Hoffman were wonderful caring people and the stories I've read here are Not True! The Mansion was a beautiful home in it's hey day. However, the truth is not nearly as exciting as all of this BS gg from Picher, Oklahoma

I live on Highway 10, just a few miles south of the old mansion location.  Back in the late 60's, a black 1957 Thunderbird would come ripping down the dirt road, (its paved now) and then go squealing off towards Miami.  I was told that the owner of that Thunderbird was one of the Hoffman boys or could it have been your boyfriend?  I eventually bought a black., 1957 Thunderbird in 1969 for $700.  Wish I still had it now.

My brother and I would like to see any photos of the mansion before it was torn down. I was fortunate to have went there several times when it was a hounted house attraction and while standing in long lines, got to examine the outside of the house and grounds and the inside of the foyer where the staircase was. Its hard for me to describe, but it was a very small plantation style house. To a 17 yr old, it was disappointing, but still very unique. I remember the real wood paneling and molding in the foyer and thought it would be beautiful restored, but the house and grounds were in shambles then and a year after it was torn down. Its a shame cuz it had such an impact on this area and for the Quapaw family.

My Grandfather was the care taker, it is near QuaPaw... I spent summers visiting. There was the main house, and a pool. I didn't like the house so played in the barns, tackle room, and loved the silver sadles. They had some beautiful horses. There was a slaughter house, which they butched hogs. My grandfather had paints which was his that he bred, and sold. I first learned to ride horses there. My cousin said the house burned down? Last time I was there was right before my Grandfather left that was almost 40 years ago. I was born in 1957, and we visited yearly. I never seen anything in that time, and I had been to the grave yard many times too. A pet bear was buried there, which most people don't know.

that last post is very interesting i had the exact same thing happen to me minus the white shadow or scratches. It has many tales circulating around it. the truth is you will only know if you can experience the paranormal and go give it a try for yourself. dont get caught.

I have been in the mansion several times. I have heard little kids laughing and have seen an apparition in a mirror on the wall. Also there was a pool table and i heard a game being played. Once we got chased by the spooklight while we were driving away from there. All in all a very scary place!

What a load of BS The house was built by Benjamin Quapaw. When he passed away it went to Agnes Quapaw who later married Henry Hoffman, my uncle. No one was murdered, no nut jobs except the ones writing in this forum. After my uncle passed away, my cousins, Hank, Henry E. Jr and Sami his wife, lived there. I have spent many nights in that house and it was not haunted. The “basket ball courts” were originally tennis courts and the track behind the house was for training hackney horses. The stone “garage” that had been converted to living quarters (where I believe my 2nd cousin vick lived) was the carriage house where my uncle’s carriages and sleigh were stored. By the way, the bear’s name was Peggy. Tom Hoffman
