Location Description:

The lighthouse is haunted by a ghost named Muriel Trevenard. She was visiting the lighthouse with some friends from the valley. They looked around. Then left. Muriel then realized she left her handkerchief in the kitchen. She told her friend Harold she`d be right back and come out through the kitchen. He let her go. Then he heard her scream he ran to the kitchen door, but it was locked. he went to the front of the house and ran to the kitchen. Muriel wasn`t anywhere in sight.

----------------------------------------------

Happy and myself went here today, took lots of pics and some video, i uploaded some unique ones and I will upload the video when we get back from our honeymoon, the internet connection here is wayyyyyy too slow.

to sum it up, out of 100 or so pix, nothing looked wierd, video looked normal, but on 1 video, there is 2 distinct `electronic` noises that neither of us recall hearing. one that sounded like a doorbell (while on the second floor), and the other, dunno, just odd (on the third floor, near the ladder to theactual light part).

If you go here, specifically ask the volunteer in the front of the building for a sheet about the story, they have a stack of them but unless you ask for it, you wont get it... as it is not part of the normal tour, and is kept in a cabinet in the back of the room.

All in all... cool place, looks interesting, the view of the ocean is amazing...but the `haunted` aspect is odd.

The story about the girl missing, is simply that... a story. It was written by Lischen M Miller. It was reprinted in the `Pacific Monthly` in 1889, volume 2.

There is however a different story that the locals are aware of.

The light house was built in 1871, and put out of commision in 1874 since the location was horrible, and wasn barely visible from the sea.

According to the locals, immediatly after the lighthouse was closed down, a ghost that haunted the beach moved in. Evan MacClure of the whaler Moncton. Legend has it, there was a mutiny aboard the ship, and the crew set him drifting in a small boat. A boat similiar to his was found in the rugged rocks of the devils punchbowl (local area with rough rocks and tides). Many have reported calls for help from the sea, with no source, and sightings of a red haired man in sailors clothing along the beach near the light house. Once the lighthouse became haunted, the beach hauntings and sightings stopped.

The story by Lishen M Miller, I am assuming is implying in his fictional story that the ghost of evan maclure was the one to cause the dissapearance of Muriel.

It also should be noted that even the coast guard has reported lights in the building and the beach. When they checked the area, nothing could be found.

Another hitch hiker reported seeing a small girl float above him near the top windows, while he was sleeping in front of the light house (unaware of the rumors of the hauntings).

One of the tour guides had mentioned that people on the tour have spotted a little girl running down the stairs and out the front door.
In 1946 the lighthouse was to be bull dozed, but the locals decided to form a human chain arround the light house to protect it.

Outcast Earth has a great debunk documenting the McClure tale on their website. HOWEVER, while I don't believe that the stories attached to Yaquina Bay are true, I still believe it may be haunted. I've visited probably a dozen times, always during regular visiting hours and have experienced cold spots on the stairs twice. The lighthouse is open for tourists most days from 12-4 and serious paranormal groups can request after-hours visits. PLEASE do not vandalize or break into this beautiful landmark after hours! It's an Oregon treasure and deserves to be preserved. If you do visit, please give few dollars to help maintain the lighthouse and museum.
