I`ve been to pennhurst several times, weird stuff has happened all but once. While the medical buildings are probably where the worst happened they had the least activity, unless you count the bums living in them. WARNING: YOU WILL BE CHASED BY POLICE. The Pennhurst State School compound is being taken over by an Army National Guard Base, it has been slowly expanding over the past two years. It is now next to impossible to get up there without detection, and even less likely that the buildings will be accessible. If you attempt this, DO NOT use the main entrance to the compound, message me for directions. but like i said, it`s next to impossible now that the base has expanded

this site is just too funny, I grew up with Pennhurst basically as a back yard, me and my friends played in the buildings, the corn feild and the creeks on and around the property from the time we were like 6 on.....when I was in high school it was where everyone went "parking" it is not haunted.  The only creepy part about that place is in the cornfeild, and I mean way in the cornfeild there is a big cemetary with lots of patients from pennhurst burried there, I don't know if all the deaths at pennhurst were ever publicized but some were very young children....

My friend used to work here for the Army, so I have been through the tunnels and other buildings. There is some really weird stuff down there. Some things will make you question if the idea of Saw had spawned from the tunnels of this place. I know if you get caught there, the fine is upwards of $1000.

I have never been to Pennhurst. I have heard stories about the ghosts and spirits that haunt you there, but never experienced them myself. I would love to be spooked...just not sent to time in jail.

you go down the road that takes you to the dept. of transportation and past the big tower after you pass that take the right road not the left cause the left takes you to the army base

you have to write a letter to the county to gte access in there... i run a modeling website and we'll be doing a photoshhot there all legal and legit in the spring and summer... but its taken me a year and a half to get the authorization... which is a pain in the a** so i suggest u park at the vet center n walk thru the woods... its so much fuggin easier

I tried to get down to Pennhurst over the weekend but it was dark adn cold and we didn't know how far down the road it was. Can anyone tell me approximately how far down the road it is? It's blocked off now and we crossed the pennhurst property no trespassing signs. We passed a building on the right side of the road a little ways down and then a bunch of cows but we never saw any of the actual buildings? We also went over a little white bridge?

I have been to pennhurst a few times...I would not advise going unless you are with someone that has been there before to show you how to get to the buildings...I went there last week and all the doors to the buildings were locked and the tunnels were boarded up with plywood (usually the tunnels are wide open to go in and the doors to the buildings were wide opened...it was wierd

I've lived in the area for 12 years but have only been to Pennhurst once and it is, thus far, the creepiest place I've been to in my entire life. Of course a group of us went at night because you're less likely to be seen. (wear darker clothing) You can feel the energy in the air and it's enough to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is EXTREMELY easy to get turned around in some of the tunnels (otherwise known as "the hall of echos") and buildings so go with someone who knows the grounds- but REMEMBER that you are TRESSPASSING so with that said... BE CAREFUL and keep a low profile!! The police DO have a watchful eye for mischief at Pennhurst thanks to visitors before you.

my brother and a few of his friends spent the night there a few years ago. he complained of nothing creepy, but said i shouldn't go for fear of dying. (i'm supremely clumsy and allergic to mold. ha.) he said it was a really great place to walk around, and that one of his friends said she felt weird vibes and things. there are lots of items left behind from previous visitors, etc. i have a bunch of photographs that he and his friends took. he also said that they were caught upon leaving, and it wasn't a terrible situation. be quiet, be polite, things like that.

Went last saturday. No probelms getting in. Most of the stuff is boarded up. Crawled into the windows. You can basically go anywhere still but you have to look for unboarded windows to crawl through. Underground passages seem to be blocked idk. Once your in the buildings you can go anywhere though. Becafefull of unsturdy floors.

i went to penn hurst last night, worst experience ever. got caught and we didn't even do anything. i would suggest if you do get caught do NOT run. the cops are cool and so are the security guards after a while of just talking to them. All i know is that there are about 10 security guards who walk in and out of the buildings all night and don't park in the vets hospital parking lot by the old shop that is lit up, even though nobody is really in there, they might tow your car....so have fun!

Went with my brother and some friends. We went and were caught by a guard on our way out because we saw stuff and were scared shitless. As long as you don't run and you're real cool with the guard and you didn't mess anything up they will usually be cool with you. He asked if we got scared. If we saw anything and then we shared stories. He even told us some things he has seen

Today I tried going there and a cop was sitting on the road that goes up toward the building with the long thing stickin up. He stopped us before we got there and said that it was a $500 fine or something for getting caught. I'm starting to wonder if its even possible to get in and out without being seen. I need to know what time of day it is best to go without getting caught, an easy way to go where i wouldnt get caught, ect. My email is csmith739@comcast.net let me know!

My sister and I are considering going there next weekend sometime, any advise from anyone on how not to get caught? Is there any specific spot thats easy to get in?

Also, does anyone have the actual address or what to put into a GPS to get there? I'm in Delaware so landmarks aren't going to help.

haha i think half of these comments are quite funny, if u want to goto the asylum most likely there are goin to be large groups mabey even a platoon of us army soldiers there bcuz they turned a small section of the asylum into the museam for my unit which is the 1st/111th infantry pa gueard unit and there is a veteran home next door and a mid aged E-6 staff sgt. runs the museam and theres normally guys that are in pretty great shape there and ur not goin to outrun a whole platoon of soldiers sorry gameover for u...PVT REDCLAY

i have been to this place dozens of times, and i have never gotten caught. i've heard the new owner is VERY unfriendly. I have seen him a few times driving in what seems to be a golfcart multiple times, and sometimes he goes with a little kid that seems to look like his son or something?

anyways about everything is boarded up, all doors, windows, and such. if you were to bring a ladder (good luck) you could easily get in all of the places because almost all of the second story windows you have all access too and their all opened. bascially all of the tunnels all blocked off.

i havent experienced any haunting related things. and i have gone by myself too into the basement and such. no problem at all.

the buidligns are not even worth seeing anymore. the new owner is doing a damn good job preserving that place, NOT. everything to be honest is terribly decayed and gross.

if you have questions email me:     "   jaredstrugala@yahoo.com "

Ive read many conflicting stories about Pennhurst.  Im from an hour and a half away also in PA but im not trying to take the trip for nothing or to just get booked.  All id like to know is;  is it really watched and gaurded that well??  Is it better to go at day or night??  And is it even worth it??  I plan to go and see whats up at leaste, its not tresspassing until i go inside.  I do not plan on doing any type of damage to the place or to go in there and party like others.  I just want to explore another peice of PA history and another supposedly 'haunted' place, because this seems to be the mother of them all in my home of Pennsylvania.  And ive been to a few crazy/creepy ones now.  Either way, what road is it on and when is the best time to go and where is the best place to enter if i do choose to go in??

i have receantly moved to upstate pa but used to live near by any way on one of the out skirt bounds of pennhurst their is a housing development if you go behind some of the houses towards the woods you will start to see the low cemetary markers not tombstones just the markers any way start going through that way my suggeston would be to go during the day look behind the houses find them then when you have go back at night but rember all the blogs about the army base are true

Could u be just a little more specific on those directions??  Im sorry for sounding dumb its just with the differant things ive read about this i want to specifically know everything i can before i take a road trip to check it out.  Im from harrisburgh pa and never heard of spring city before.  And how good are the odds of being caught??  And will i easily be able to find it through the grass path your talking about?

Spring City is in Royersford,Pa thats where Pennhurst is located i've been there several times throughout the years if your on extention 422 look for the Spring city exit and the burger king is right when u get of the exit. There is also a 75% chance of getting caught especially if u have alot of people with u just be cautious with ur flashlights and watch out for cars or trucks when back there at night cause its either the owner of pennhurst or military if u do that you wont becaught. Just mapquest Springcity and search for burgerking and it will show nu directions and u better make ur mind up soon cause they will be knocking pennhurst down eventually and putting a graveyard there.

Yea i have made up my mind, im going this weekend with about 4-5 people total armed with nothing but some flashlights and dark long sleeved cloths.  Im also going up wendsday to check out the situation in the daytime.  If anybody else has any usefull info let me know quikly because im trying to get as much info as i can before i go take a road trip to pennhurst.  Mainly if you have any info on a good entrance point into the building/one of the buildings.  But if we do get caught/seen by police, owner, or miliatary we will be calm, real, and nice - i dont want or need any trouble.  I just went to Gettysburgh this past saturday and was on the battlefeilds and everything, just never found devils den.  Pennhurst seems completly hit or miss but definatly interests me - go on youtube in type in Pennhurst Asylum and watch some of the video's and photo slideshows the place really looks f*cked up.

Ok so now ive been to Pennhurst just to scope it out and can answer alot of peoples questions but i have one myself.  I went on pennhurst drive and through veterans drive and found an abandoned building with alot of posted signs and its a part of pennhurst a little ways before it i seen a blocked off road... and beside the veterans hospital i seen a 'no through street'  witch is the best way to go in??  We drove by a few times and stopped to take pix and pulled off and parked and walked to it but didnt go in.  So if anybody could tell me where the best spot to park and go in at would be thatd be great.  And if anybody knows the building im talking about (it has a huge skinny tower on top)  if you know what the building used to be let me know.  To answer questions, it isnt hard to find.  I didnt see a single cop the whole time i was in the area, though the outside did seem patrolled unless the people we seen worked up there.  But while walking up the road its on a pickup truck drove by several times and so did a car.  Other than that it was ok and all good and fairly easy to find.

pennhurst used to be really easy to get into before jackasses screwed it up for all of us it never used to be boarded up best place to park is nto burger king if you park there guarenteed to get caught so park on residential road that used to be the entrance there is a clearing across the street park there and walk up either throuught the woods under the power lines or just right up the road from some houses ever since they started patrolling and boarding stiff up its been harder to get into the buildings there are definately some places to avoid especially the top floors very easy to fall through the floors we used to just drive up and park next to the entrance to the admin building there is some evidence of some squatting so dont go alone most of the guards are cool as previously mentioned they just tell you to leave because its dangerous as for paranormal activity i myself have experienced things there every time i went as have my friends experiences range from disembodied voices to full bodied apparitions best time to go is at night but keep all lights away from windows be careful while roaming very easy to get caught and as for the guard soldier from before national guard soldiers arent always in the best shape take it from a former active duty guy we work a bit harder at keeping in shape but biggest advice dont mess with anything this place was home to a lot of people up until they died and some eventually buried on the grounds show them the respect you would want to recieve from a visitor in your house if guys need maps of the layout directions and more specifics on where to park and safe unguarded entry ways best ways to get in and manover and tunnel maps so to stay undetected just email me at kennymaze@gmail.com

Hey everyone, Pennhurst was bought out and in now a private property. One of the people who bought it I believe is Randy Bates, a famed haunted house attraction guy who's done stuff all over the country. They are converting the whole entire property into a Haunted House Attraction. They had some footage on America Haunts 3, it will be named the Pennhurst Institution of Fear. They will reopen the doors next year for Halloween.

They are trying to redo the buildings since there is mold and water damage as well as asbestos. So there's the update. Anyone interested in going next year?

I'm watching it right now.  I can't wait to go.  I wanted to go this year until I found this website that said not open till next year.  Ya know what's funny?  My husband and I were watching a different haunting show and said "hey, somebody should turn that into a haunted house" and lo and behold they did.  I hate it couldn't be me.  He's going to make bank....that place is hella creepy already.  We think that something might start happening to the actors.  We thought it would be cool if one of them up and quit in front of a group of paying customers to up the scariness.  Way to go Mr. Bates.  You'll definitely have my support.

So after seeing last nights show, I thought I would see if anyone has had anything crazy happen to them there, I wondered if the "spirits" would be pissed off about being disturbed but it doesnt sound that haunted to me, I am surprised at what I have read, oh well! Looks like its on its way to being haunted for next year!

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but the true story of this particular building is far less scary. The only scary part is how society turned it's back on the residents who once lived there. It took a news reporter to uncover the truth about the "forgotten". Abuse happened not in the sense of some horror movie, but close enough. There was no funding and not enough staff. This was one of many institutions in the '70's that was like that, this one was made to be an example. People have to remember that at one time people did call this place home. The architectural structure of the building is cool and mysterious, but just that.

Sorry everyone. Its not fun anymore. Back in 06 and 07, f-ing nuts. My young cousins went up with a cam and got some nice video before they got booted. Back when we went, it was a real trip. Especially when your high as hell. Now, they took all the scary stuff out. If your going, bring a hammer and screw gun. Just don't get popped with it. Gaurenteed fine if you are. Back when we were there, most of the hospital drugs and paperwork was still there. Cool stuff. have fun and get scarred.

Just wanted to let you all know that the guy who bought it is one of the masters of haunted houses!  Everyone in that area should be excited to go when he gets it up and running!  My husband is an sfx artist for haunts, (used to do makeup for the #1 haunt in america, Rocky Point, which is now closed) and just about wet his pants when he found out, now we are trying to figure out how to get a job there!

id say bull**** if so many people aren't bringing it up about them turning it into an attraction. the buildings are rotting, destroyed and graffitied up from the idiots that go up there. it use to be a fantastic place a few years back, but its pretty much gotten ruined by everyone. then the amount of asbestos that the buildings have in them make me wonder how they could ever make an attraction out of it. IMHO it be completly pointless for them to make it into an attraction which makes me find it hard to believe that they would actually do so. (not calling anyone a liar who is stating that the property got bought out and there making it an attraction, but i just dont buy it)  Im just saying, health & safety wise its just not a place to bring tourists into.  I honestly think that the buildings should just end up being destroyed, never would have imagined myself saying that a few years ago but honestly the place isnt what it use to be..

well if any of you need any information, ive been up there about 60-70 times. email me vdubgirlx@aim.com

For the person saying to park behind Penn Hall (whitchever building that is) all the roads are blocked off by cement blocks or gates.  So you cant drive through unless you open a gate or plow through some bushes/tree's.  And i know for a fact theres security i went twice and got booked the second time though it was my own stupid fault - we had opened a gate to drive through and take pix after we were already in there and got booked on our way out.  I still plan to go back once more but havnt found really any interesting info on the place since the last time i went.  If anybody has any help on a easy access point to the hospital or good way to without getting caught that woulnt be to confusing let me know asap.  And fyi to everybody arguing if it is or isnt gonna be made into an attraction my best freinds gf is in the army and goes up there all the time and said they ARE turning it into a haunted attraction.

As soon as this snow stops that we've been getting this week here in PA im going back, all i want to know before i go is if the security patrolls the buildings and tunnels regularly?  I wouldnt think so myself becauseof abestos and the condition of the buildings.  And the second thing i would like to know is an easy access point to one of the buildings, pretty much easy spot to get in like an open window or what?  If not a easy spot to sneak in and/or open up.  And to the peson above me curious if its worth a 6hour trip, it will be if you can get inside without getting busted trus me.  Though ive been there twice - and got busted once.  Pennhurst has recently been popular being on two tv shows that ive seen one being Ghost Adventures witch was the better of the two and Extreme Paranormal.  Check em' out.

Hey everyone! I just went to Pennhurst with a group of friends last night and we had several encounters with both the spirits and the people who work there. I have also gone several times before. By the way, I have yet to get caught. If you want any information, I'm your guy. Email me at BigDfb2368@yahoo.com if you have questions about anything.

*** NO TRESSPASSING *** | | I have been there several times. If you like this location check out Harrisburg State Hospital. It was closed in 2oo6. As for Pennhurts, this place is very creepy. I have caught EVP's, shadows, weird noises and I was pushed down at this location where I spent 3 days in the hospital. This place is very dangerous! The spirits are aggressive and do not like to be bothered. 5 people were arrested in early 2o1o for entering without permission. | |

I used to work at the Southeastern Veterans Center on the grounds of the Pennhurst site. I have been in the old buildings, we atelunch down there for the first few years I worked there. They built an addition to the SEVC and stopped using Dietary. There was also a building that housed supplies for the veterans. I personally believe that there are spirits remaining, I saw an aparition in a window once. The story about them converting it into a haunted site is true and will open fall 2010. It is dangerous down there due to decay and after 911, security of the site was beefed up for the sake of the vets there. I believe the new owner has his own security now and the police surveil regularly. If you want to be safe and enter the property now, you could go down Church Street and park near residential homes, then be prepared for a long walk. When you get to the Penn DOT stuff, there is an overgrown road that goes past the boiler plant, then up the hill to the buildings. Lots of luck to anyone who wants to try this, it is tricky nowadays. For travel directions, use the Church Road and Bridge Street coordinates as your destination. Zip is 19475.

A friend and I just rode our bikes up there on an east coast biking trip. This was one of our main destinations, the other being Norwich insane asylum(which we were kicked out of promptly.... Pretty lame since we came all that way from dc by bike mind you!). But we got in pennhurst really easily and in plain sight of quite a few people, although at the end one of the mulch workers put up a bit of a chase. We went up church street, took a left at the power plant and up the first right on a blocked tiny overgrown road. We stashed the bikes to the right and went in the closest building and then union. Union is by far the coolest one we went in/could get into. Go to the back of it and there should be a window with a screen ripped off(the others all have bars on them.). I have some sweet ghostie pics too... Went in the basement. Fucked up energy at this place. But yes, I wouldn't recommend going the way we did... Just winging it in plain sight. It got us caught at other places

We were there last night, seen four cops before even parking and starting to walk.  Knowing alot about the Haunted House they are making here made us very nervous as we know its now or never for part of Pennhurst.  Get on Youtube.com and look up America Haunts: Pennhurst and you will learn about the haunted house in there also.  We eventually decided not to go and went to Publickers Distillery.  Pennhurst aint what it used to be, real soon its a lost cause.  Nobody wants to go pay to see fake scares, we wanna go and see the real history and possibly some real scares!

I haven't seen an address but now that it's a haunted house you should be able to get directions.  It's in Spring City which isn't very big.  The National Guard now occupies a few buildings there, you might be able to also look that up.  Sorry I couldn't help more

Planning on going to the made up attraction next weekend the final weekend its open. Though i read online and heard from a couple freinds the attraction was lame especially after knowing the real Pennhurst and the actual history of Pennhurst. 25$ minimum to get in, and you'll have to wait in 2 hour lines and only get to be entertained and inside for roughly 15min of one building, or pay 50$ to go to the front of the line. It sucks, i was at Pennhurst before when it was abandoned before it was turned into this bullshit, i was more shook being in there risking getting tresspassing and looking for ghosts and looking for history. I am the anonamous visitor that ended up going to Publickers Distillery on my last attempt to trespass into Pennhurst... I know this area well though im from York PA near the 7 gates of hell and Kunkles Mansion message me on here if you have questions or email me at FR3SH112@aim.com

Well my sister works there and i went to see it.I think it was good.yes if u go friday or saturday the lines are long but sunday are ok.well i don't think it is bullshit.this hauntedhouse is alot better then having house's or a mall put there.give the owner some time and i think u will see the buildings come back to life.If people would stop Tresspassing and taking things from there maybe they would not have the cops back there.

I went last week and was able to snap photos and drive around before the haunt started. There were quite a few people doing the same thing by the employee parking.I would be happy signing a waiver and paying the owner 25 dollars just so I could walk around the property. I also believe they would make more money there if they charged the public a fee to visit the location rather than doing this attraction. Not sure that it would ever work now though. Thanks to all of the people that ruined it for everyone else.

I parked behind the pump house right past the Veteren's hospital. (DON'T PARK THERE!) My three buddies and I went around and explored a bit. Went all the way past the childrens ward(creepy swing set & old pool), some of the outer buildings, and the laundry building. The whole front entrance is bolted, locked, and impossible to get into because it's part of the halloween haunted house. There ARE cameras on some of the doors so be careful before you walk up to them. The main area outside of the quad is being used to make mulch and there are people that are there during the day.  We couldn't find a way in to any of the buildings but it was very cool to walk around and see. On our way back to the car we were laughing and bullshitting about how we didn't get booked. As soon as we walked up to the pump station some SSG in the National Guard was chilling outside of his red pick up truck asking about the vehicle that was behind the pump station hidden (mine). I ran to my car and tried to escape but the cops rolled up as soon as I was about to pull out. He didn't catch us on the property so we got a simple $20 fine that was easy to pay and didn't have any implications. It was TOTALLY worth it considering the ticket to go into the gay part is $25. For those people who don't give a fuck about running (far run) make sure you park in a place that you KNOW you won't get booked at and if you get confronted by security or police and they are trying to fine you or check your ID then you run your fucking ass off and make sure you're not getting tailed. FUCK THE NATIONAL GUARD SNITCH.

I uploaded a few pics I took at the haunted attraction at Pennhurst 10/2010. Check out the ghost picture. I find it totally fascinating and spooky but calming. I grew up near Pennhurst and it was part of the area history, good or bad. I had relatives who worked there and I know they were nothing but loving to the residents. As a child, we went there at Christmas to sing to the patients. I am sure that the abuse may have gone on as treating the mentally handicapped back then was new and there was no way to know what worked. The attraction is open now for 2011.

My wife and I went to Pennhurst over the weekend for the (horrible) haunted house walk thing and it only made us want to go back during late night hours and get in through an open window we found in Mayflower hall, but I'm wondering how well this is policed now and if anyone has gotten in recently.
