On Norman Way in that area I ran into a ghost several times. It was always when I would get home late from a party or something. Always around midnight to 2am. He was tall wearing all black (black trenchcoat) had a dog on a leash and walked his dog. As he walked his dog he walked like a robot. Hands and feet would be very stiff. One night my friend and I were driving on the street because I was getting dropped off and we saw him. My friend made it seem like he was going to run him over and the man just stood there in the middle of the street. He did not even move, he just put up his hand as if he were telling us to stop and put his head down so that we would not see his face. My friend lowered his window and told him to move and the man just laughed, still not showing his face. I have seen some weird stuff out there. It happenend near the deadend where the street ends and your can go over into the fields.
I have lived in the salinas area my entire life and have heard many stories. There are 2 that keep coming back into play no matter how long i have heard them and details have not changed. The first is the story regarding th woman on old stage road. heard that one as a kid, even went out there looking for her a coupld of times. I will say this, a stong sense of fear and anger is in the area. I am not what you would call physic, but I have to admit there is something near that Red school near the Crazy Horse rd intersection. Even during the day that area hits me like a ton of bricks.
The second story involves Salinas High school. I heard this one as a child too, and have since heard it again. There is a girl looking for her boyfriend. Usually, betweeen 10:00 and 12:00pm she can be spotted near the clock tower. I have never seen her, but none the less this sotry continues to live on, just as old stage road does.
Now for the nitty gritty......I did have an expeience when I was 14 on Market Street. Market street is a pretty busy and industrious street (runs paralell to the train tracks). Near the Davis intersection about 1/4 mile north there is an old cemetary. There was work being done to widen the bridge that ran over Market. I was in the car with my granfather, and it was bout 11:30pm at night. Just as we hit the middle of the bridge, a figure of a man appeared on the side of the road. Not meneacing or anyting just watching us intently. I didn;t think much of it at first, then he just kinda walked throught he bridge rails and disappered. I have not seen him since. Not sure what was going on or if the cemetary down the road had something to do with it. The odd thing is he was dressed like charlie chaplin, complete with bowler's hat. It was a very odd expierence.
The school is Laguanita, it is attended daily for kids around that area. I have heard of one swing, swinging on its own when there isn't even a light breeze.
Bodies are dumped there all the time:
SALINAS, Calif. -- A body found outside of Salinas on Saturday is being investigated as a homicide.
Mariano Zizumbo's body was discovered on Old Stage Road near the 12.2 mile marker.
Deputies said Zizumbo, 70, had several injuries to his head and neck.
Within the past seven months there was another decomposed body found by a farmer who thought the vultures were for a cow. (Crazy horse and Oldstage).
Let me tell you, I will do everything in my power to avoid old stage at night even if it's only 7 but still dark forget it. I have heard so many stories from this road. Even in the day this area is very creepy. Not to mention the newly erected stone honoring the history of the area where a battle for California was held now just strawberry fields. Still adds to the mysteriousness of it all.
That's very interesting, I live across the street from the Steinbeck House on Stone Street. I've heard that the apartments across from me (behind the steinback house) have activity. The house I rent seems to be from teh 30's or 20's, nothing wierd has happened...YET. I get creeped out at night sometimes, but I do it to myself. I mind-fk myself alot of times, however the steinback house is about 100 feet away and in vew from my living room and kitchen. That place has to be haunted. There use to be a hospital where the steinback house and nieghboring apartment complex is.
I've heard from workers that the old natividad hospital is very haunted as well, with voices that can be heard through the hallways.
You should move this comment to the Steinbeck House section, just a suggestion.
I have been in the cellar which is a gift shop. When I first entered I thought I was stupid for getting hyped up about going in. I was able to calm myself down while looking at all the items for sale. When I went to the back of the room, there are some of the Steinbecks family old furniture items, I remember a bed where he was born. When I was back there I started to panic I felt scared, I felt heavier very anxious. I don't know if I scared myself or what happened but I got out of there.
in 2007 in zavala rd and oldstage rd. when it was like about 3:00am a crew of lettuce where harveting and they saw a young woman walking down the road one of the truck driver asker if she was lost she did not respond and continue walking a another person harvesting asker something he did not response he said that her face was pale and he dint see her eyes her neck was red like if she was like choke he got scared and walk away from her then she went in side of the field and desapper in the field .
Twenty years ago I worked in a small agri-business in Salinas CA. The greenhouses and office were the first buildings on that site; no other structure had existed prior to its construction. The area had been mainly fields and ranch prior to the business being there.
The location was very close to Old Stage Rd, which has a well deserved reputation of being haunted. One of the most famous stories is the headless woman who was murdered along the road, who has been reported to have been seen walking along the side of Old Stage with her head in her arms. I frequently saw odd lights during the winter commute home that looked like on coming headlights and then would disappear when you drove towards then.
The haunting started rather subtly; in fact we thought one of the admin people was pranking the rest of the office staff. Office supplies would be moved to odd places at night or mysteriously disappeared to be found in the middle of the office floor days later. The TV in the conference room would switch on at odd times during the day. As time went on, the incidents became more pronounced. People in the office and work crew began to catch fleeting glimpses of a dark haired woman in a white shirt. She bore a passing resemblance to one of the managers to the point where people would catch a glimpse of the ghost and think the manager was actually in the office sitting at desk. I would be working in the front office and hear someone call me from the back, only to walk over and find no one was there.
As time went by, most of us in the office became used to "La Fantasma". We went through a few receptionists during this period and each time someone new started, our ghost became very active as though she was either upset by the change or testing out the "new kid". One time, our poor cleaning person was cleaning up in the lab in the evening. As she worked, she was listening to the radio. All of a sudden, the radio switched stations (from one end of the dial to another) and went very loud and all the lights in the lab went out. The woman refused to work the night shift after that incident.
Along with hearing her call my name and the occasional glimpse of her at a desk, two incidents stand out for me. I was once working late to finish a programming project, so I was the last one out of the office that night. I carefully went through the offices, locked up the inner office doors and shut the lights out. I locked the main door and headed towards my car. All of a sudden all of the lights in the office went back on. While I thought it was funny, I didn't have enough nerve to go back in the building and shut off the lights!
Another time, I went into the computer room first thing in the morning and found that the door was blocked. There was only one door in and out of the room and somehow the garbage can (which was full of green bar computer paper and heavy) had been pushed against the door, which swung into the room rather than out. She never seemed to be malicious, but rather playful in her activities.
The only other haunting at the facility seemed a bit more dark and foreboding. Across from the main office there was a field that came off the main parking lot. On several occasions, some of us saw a tall dark man in a wide brimmed hat that seemed to either pace the field or stand on the edge of the parking lot looking towards the building. He never seemed as substantial as the female ghost of our office, but seeing him gave most of us the willies.
I don't know if the haunting continued after I left the job over 10 years ago. But it was an interesting place to work nonetheless!
