Location Description:

Haunted by Thomas Whaley & it is believed there are others. This house was once the city`s courtroom. The haunting extend beyond Thomas Whaley and to a man hanged just outside the house. He was hung for stealing a boat. One visitor strongly felt the presence of a woman while touring the house, in one of the upstairs bedrooms. “It was not frightening...the presence was actually welcoming. There are tours in this place.

—————————————————————————————————

Said to be the most haunted place in the United States, the Whaley House was built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley on land that was partially a cemetery. Nothing gets the ghouls stirring like invading their home. Ghosts that inhabit the home include a young girl who was accidentally hanged on the property, the ghost of the thief Yankee Jim Robinson who was clubbed to death and can be heard on the stairway where he died, and the young red—headed Whaley daughter who is claimed to sometimes appear in such realistic form that visitors think she is a real child. Author deTraci Regula has had her fare share of experiences there as well: "Over the years, while dining across the street at the Old Town Mexican Cafe, I became accustomed to noticing that the shutters of the second—story windows [of the Whaley House] would sometimes open while we ate dinner, long after the house was closed for the day. On a recent visit, I could feel the energy in several spots in the house, particularly in the courtroom, where I also smelled the faint scent of a cigar, supposedly Whaley`s calling card. In the hallway, I smelled perfume, initially attributing that to the young woman acting as docent, but some later surreptitious sniffing in her direction as I talked to her about the house revealed her to be scent—free." Furthermore, famed psychic Sybil Leek claimed to have sensed several spirits there, and world renowned ghost hunger Hanz Holzer considers it one of the true haunted spots in the United States. Check out the Whaley House website for stories, history and lots of photos. Here are some other good stories as well

late at night if you walk around the grass area to the right of the house, you can occasionally see the ghost of two little girls in the garden

When I was there (two years ago)I met a man whose job was to take ghost photos of the ghostly happenings every night. He had a large collection of unusual photos taken during his shift. What a job!!

when my family and i went to the restraunt at the whaley house, when we were eating outside my mom said she looked at the big tree in the backyard and saw mrs. whaley sitting next to the tree in all white and waved at my mom and disappeared behind the tree. i was really perplexed that mrs.whaley showed up during the day and outside the house.

Arkangel, ghosts can appear day or night. They are just a whole lot easier to see during the night. They can also move--LOok how many places the ghost of Elvis has been seen!

Actually you cant stay there over night period. There is no where to sleep because you cant even go in to the bedrooms, they have plexi glass blocking them so you cant touch anything. I bring my quiji board there. I used to go there so much, that I became friends with the security guard, and he told me of some stories. When there used to be stairs in the back, some cops were driving by and saw a lady on the stairs crying so that asked her to leave, so she walked away, they circled the block and when they came back, she was there again, so they got pissed off, and started walking up to her again, but then she vanished. Plus I have been there and smelt Mrs. Whaley's perfume countless times

Whaley House has a long haunted history in the San Diego area.  Even if you do not see a ghost or feel any presence, it is a fun historic building that has been used for many purposes through its colorful history.  The surrounding galleries and restaurants make for a pleasant visit to Old San Diego.

In the daytime around dusk: If you use a camera, you can catch small red dots on the photographs. Also, if you walk into the court room, you will feel a draining sensation as if you're helpless and can't control your body. Upstairs, you can hear door knobs turning, but no one is there in the empty hallway. It is a good place to visit for a scare! Good luck!

Well, I would like to tell my first haunted experience EVER, when I was about 7 years old (I am 27 now, soon to be 28). It was in the Whaley House actually. I haven't been in there for awhile, but I think you're not able to get into the rooms anymore. I may be wrong though.  Back then there was just a rope keeping you from going in the rooms, and well, that wasn't gonna stop me from going in!

In one of the rooms I went in I remember extremely vividly looking in a long mirror and seeing a young boy (about 5 yrs. old) in a 19th century-style outfit. He had suspenders, a beret-type hat, knee highs, etc. He was talking to a beautiful lady who actually kept looking at me through the mirror! The weird thing was she was all green! I mean green face, clothes, hair, etc. I wasn't scared though. I was intruiged. I heard people coming up the stairs and I turned to see who it was. When I turned back the images were gone! It was an amazing experience.  I think a part of me felt like it was special effects and so I wasn't scared.  I had been to Disneyland a couple times by this point and figured the people at the Whaley House were trying to do something like that do at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion.

When I was leaving I asked the old lady working if she had heard of a green lady and she said yes. She may have been lying, who knows. She kind of said it like "Oohhhhh, yeeessss." Kind of like she was just agreeing with me. My parents thought it was a child's wild imagination--but no. I know it wasn't. Well, about 1 year ago I was back in Old Town in their bookstore. I happened to pick up a book on haunted San Diego and it actually talked about a green female spirit that haunts that area!  They even had an illustration of a green, female ghost!  They were far off in what she actually looks like, but that's not the point. That totally made my day. So HA to everyone who didn't believe me!

I've tried to look up on the internet if anyone else has had a similar experience as mine, but I haven't been successful with find anyone.  And God only knows if I'll ever find that book again.  I think it was pure luck that I stumbled upon it and found that page. I would love to hear other's experiences though on this place.  It's truly, indefinitely haunted.

I went there twice during the day on two separate occasions during vacations and stayed for an hour each time and had Absolutely nothing happen to anyone in my party :/. The first time we took literally over a hundred photos and not even an orb showed up. The second time Was the same except for what might have been a curtain moving barely. We took the old town tour of ghosts and walked around the outside of the house even peering into the windows and still nothing happened. It was very disappointing after hearing all the hype. Still a great house and definitely not giving up on it!

I go here quite often looking for stuff. On one occasion a friend of mine as she was standing in the doorway to the room they made to look like the courtroom felt like something was around her neck she shrugged it off until later on our tour guide said some people feel like something is around their neck because there used to be hangings in that room

I've been here myself.  Nothing particularly noteworthy happened to me, although my friend and I spoke to a couple of girls we saw walking around and they showed us some of their pictures with orbs in them.  Still a pretty neat experience to step back in time.

I've been here a couple of times with my wife. First time I went there about 2yrs ago I captured orbs in one of my videos, and a bunch of other orbs in the photos I took throughout the house. Nothing scary though, I wish I had caught an apparition.
