Sarah Jane RoadSarah Jane was reportedly a union sympathizer during the Civil War who was betrayed and drove her wagon off the bridge into the water trying to escape from Confederate soldiers. She was shot by a soldier while trying to save her baby, who was in the wagon with her. People have reported hearing Sarah Jane and also the babe cry while standing on the bridge at night. Here is another explanation of the Sara Jane Haunting... A woman left her abusive husband, so to get back at her, the man took their 5yearold girl, and jumped of the side of a bridge. The woman searched for the girl for years, and finally got so distraught that she hung herself off the side of the same bridge that her daughter and husband jumped off of. It is said that at midnight, if you drive across the bridge, you can see the noose on the side on the railing and you hear a woman's voice saying, "Sara Jane, Sara Jane, where are you my Sara Jane".

I`ve actually been here. It was a long time ago when I was a teenager growing up in Orange,Tx. I don`t remember anything happen though. That could have had something to do with a little to much party for the night I was a teenager at time after all. I do remember hearing both stories being told. The second was the one we heard most of though.

I was raised there and have not really heard or seen anything. But to be honest if there were any sightings there would be plenty of different stories there, because there have been many deaths there on Sarah Jane road, for one my uncle was speeding there and ran head on into a tree and lost his head so I would have to say it is just a bad accidentle place.

I have road my bike down that road at night ,seen or heard nothing . The road used to be much darker when the trees where overgrown blocking out the moonlight. I remember back when you drove from that road directly to Pure Alantic instead of waiting for the light like it is now. Mostly cows back there.

The real story is Sara Jane was just a plain person, mother of 4 I think it was and she got old and died. She lived in the early 1900's and someone wrote a paper making up the story when she was in her upper years and bed ridden, about her committing suicide or her baby dying. So it is a myth.

Several variations of the story exist. What i remember is that Sarah Jane left her baby in a basket under the bridge to hide her from approaching Union soldiers. After the soldiers passed through Sarah Jane went to get her baby but couldn't find her as the tide had risen and washed the basket away. After searching in vain for her child she hung herself from a tree near the bridge. She wnow haunts the road, still searching for her lost child. Some say she will appear to you if you stand on the bridge and call out "Sarah Jane, I have your baby" several times. I never had the cahunas to try it. It is a creepy road that has had several accidents claiming lots of lives. All of which add to the lore. I figure if you believe in spirits, you'll likely hear the crysof the baby and the longing moans of Sarah Jane. If you're a skeptic, well then you wont hear a thing.

I grew up in that area. It's not the bridge that creeps me out, but that big... white house.

Like one of the other commentators said, there are many variations of this story. In some versions Sarah Jane is the name of the baby, and in others it's the mother.

Basic story I grew up with was that Sarah Jane was fleeing the area because of approaching Union Troops (I guess the troops who were stopped at the Battle of Sabine Pass in September 1863), her buggy hit a bump in the old road and her baby fell out into the bayou. The legend continues that she searched for her baby without luck and then hung herself.

Local historian WT Block claims the story was invented by the Port Arthur News in the 70's for a Halloween feature, and that Sarah Jane is actually based on his mother who lived further down the road in the early 1900's and died of old age, but I'm not sure I buy that entirely since my dad remembers going as a teen out to Sarah Jane Road in the 50's and calling her name.

The story goes that you stand by bridge and yell, "Sarah Jane, where are you?" and she'll answer you or appear. Alternatively it's said that you can hear a baby crying out in the woods on certain nights. Someone once told me that the mist rising off the bayou sometimes looks like a ghost and that started the myth of Sarah Jane.

The big white house mentioned by a previous commentator was built in Beaumont, later transported by barge down the river to its present location in the 80's, and there are plenty of smaller old homes lining the road to lend it more atmosphere .. many over 100 years in age and at least one dating from the 1880's.

Even though the overgrowth and trees have been cut back some in the last couple decades, you can still get a feel for the creepy total-darkness effect nighttime drivers experienced traveling down the road in the old days. Visibility at night was low with the close treeline and lack of light, and many accidents occurred on that stretch of rural highway resulting in deaths and serious injuries over the years. I remember hearing of one particularly gruesome accident resulting in a decapitations of the driver and passenger, a husband and wife.

If any road in SE Texas is going to be haunted it should be this one with its long twisted history; eerie landmarks; established record of deaths, injuries and murders: the Civil War fort and old Grigsby cotton plantation (and slave quarters) that used to exist off the road - and especially those six desecrated Indian burial mounds which were leveled to build the plantation, fort, and refinery. My dad said that when he was a child Indian arrow heads and small Attakapan relics were still plentiful and easily found at Port Neches Park .. occasionally skulls too.

He also told me about a man who hung himself back in the 40's or 50's on a tree branch which overhung Sarah Jane Road. Another little-known story is that back in the 1920's and 30's, locals lynched blacks who they thought were guilty of crimes, or who may have been perceived as "uppity" and trouble-makers, hanging them from the trees in Port Neches park, which lines Sarah Jane/Grigsby Road.

There are countless more tragic events that happened on or off Sarah Jane Road.

I have never heard a credible story of a ghostly encounter on that road though, but as I said before: if any road in the area was to be haunted it would and should be this one.

In the early and late 60's my mother ran the Riverside Tavern and we as kids would go to Sarah Jane Road all the time in search of Sarah Jane.  My sister claims she saw her rising out of the water.  I never saw anything myself but hated to drive that road late at night.  It was truly eerie.  The Riverside Tavern had a few hauntings going on that we as kids all experienced.  I think overall that the road itself holds alot of tales and phanthom experiences.

My buddie tyler saw a huge white creature at night, moning and growning in the woods it had a long snout and pointy early. later that week we saw in again except it was during the day. It was to far to make it out but we ran back to the truck, when we say it. since then we never saw it agian. but we still skate on Sara Jane road still today.

I actually saw Sara Jane. It was like 10 yrs ago and I was with my sister and 2 friends. I was sitting in the front seat with my sister who was driving and my 2 friends were in the backseat. All of a sudden, we turned a corner and there she was. She was wearing a long white gown, couldnt see her face, braids in her hair, carrying a basket, with a glow around her. She was walking right towards the passenger down and held out her arm and she mumbled the word "help." we hauled a$$ out of there. we went back, but never saw her again. I tell people about this and they dont believe me.. but i swear to you.. i saw her and it scared the living s**t out of me.

Comment#63753I also live in Bridge City, and me and my brother went down Sarah Jane road around 3:00am and as we were passing the bridge we stop because someone in a white dress appeared by my window on the passenger side. Thank God I didn't role down my window when I was going to, because I was going to call out her name, and as soon as I seen her we took off! I was soo scared! I never will and never want to go down that road EVER again!

If you saw, or heard something on the bridge in the early '80's...Chances are it was a friend and me. We used to hide under the bridge on some nights and scare the occasional car of people stopping on the bridge to test the legend. Funny thing was, no one ever stuck around to figure it out....What can I say, we were 18 and bored....Sorry! We, ourselves never saw anything, although, it is a VERY spooky road on dark foggy nights.

I've read these post & like most have never seen nor heard anything of the abnormal.  I was raised on Keith Rd which extends into Pure Atlantic short-cut or as some call Sara Jane Rd.  W. T. Block was a "Story Teller" and I've argued with him over his tale, and kin folks can do that!!
My dad told me the story of Sara as being fact not fiction.  She was a Yankee sympathizer carrying guns & ammo to the yanks.  One nite she had to make a run and she had no one to take care of the baby [Sara].   She was being spied upon and when she took off some [Dad called them] "Highway Men" started chasing her.
There was a covered bridge over Molasses Bayou and there was [and still is today] a hump.  Since she was going as fast a a team of horses could go pulling a carriage full of guns, it bounced when it hit the hump.  The baby flipped out and into the bayou.  After she manged to somehow reach her meeting site, the yanks repelled the highway-men and it was then she noted the baby was gone.  She knew this was the only logical place so she searched the banks around the bridge calling her name "SARA", "SARA".  After a long awaited time she left but still returned to repeat "SARA" to no avail.  She went on gun running till one nite it caught up with her and she met her maker.
As I said earlier I lived my entire life in the 2 story Keith home on the banks of Molasses Bayou where we farmed & raised cattle till we all went our separate ways.  I never saw, felt nor sensed any eery things that bump in the nite, but Lord I sure had an awful lots of fun pulling pranks on this little stretch of road.  For you see at the other end is a exhumed cemetery [Gantze's] and at the bend the old oak tree held 2 suicide victims and god only knows how many wrecks.  So if you dare venture down this lane go slow and listen and watch the foi-fou lei that hovers low to the ground where she haunts the path for "SARA"...............
