My friends grandparents have owened this home for decades and have personally spent many nights there I can say it is indeed haunted. The first time they (my friend and her grandma) told me the house was haunted I laughed, thinking they were just trying to scare me. But then they explained all the things they have personally seen and heard. That night was my first night staying over and we stayed in the upstairs guest room. We stayed up all night. hearing strange sounds. When we woke up the next morning her grandma told us that the Speak and Spell toy in the formal living room had gone off, spelling very scarey things. This was nothing new to them but freaked me out. That is when I asked to hear every detail of their stories. There have been a number of deaths in the home and on the property that can explain all the strange things that go on there. One story is that a little girl who was a child of the Brier's dies and has been seen in a childs rocking chair in the formal living room. ... Built in 1917, the original Emanuel hospital was put out of service in 1968 when the new Emanuel opened. Portions of the building were used for apartments and artist studios until the late 80s/early 90s when it was finally boarded up for good. Many trespassers, contractors, explorers, & kids walking home from high school had many experiences in the old creepy place. The hospital interior contained much of the old hospital equipment which only added to its creepiness factor. Two large fires decimated the building and it was torn down in the early 2000s. A large senior citizen apartment complex sits on the site now.

The downtown building once housed a hospital in the 1920s and much of the upstairs has been untouched since. Current occupants in the downstairs real estate office have heard strange noises coming from upstairs. A paranormal research group recently investigated and The Turlock Journal had a good article on it.

In the 1980s there was an old boarded-up, two-story farmhouse on the south side of West Tuolumne road between North Tully and US 99. This was before the days of Wal-Mart, Target and Oak Park apartments. Thus, West Tuolumne road was still a lonely country road where high school kids went to drink, make-out and spin donuts in their cars at the dead-end near the freeway. The creepy looking house, nicknamed “Hell House,” sat boarded up about 40 yards off the road behind a high fence. On weekends, high school kids would dare each other to run up to the porch or even try to get inside. The interior was mostly empty except for trash left by random trespassers. The stairway was located inside a narrow door and wound its way upstairs where the only piece of furniture was a heavy wrought-iron bed ... The owners of a house in the 1500 block of East Marshall Street were doing some renovations and found a long forgotten pentagram burned into the floor when the old carpet was removed. There was also evidence of melted candle wax at each point of the 5-pointed star. The owners guessed that the symbol was placed there sometime prior to 1960, maybe as early as the 1930s. The long-abandoned Murrey Hotel sits above commercial businesses along W Main street in Turlock. If you stand at the (ugly) Califia statue and look up you will see the faded name of the hotel on the old red brick. The hotel was last occupied about 40 years ago and has sat empty since. City code makes it too hard for the owners to have business or residential occupants. There are three long hallways that run from the top of the stairs and the only remaining fixtures are in-room sinks, hanging light bulbs and the occasional toilet.... A boy named Willie Brough, 12 years old, had caused excitement in the town of Turlock by settings things afire, "by his glance," had been expelled from the Turlock school, because of his power. His parents had cast him off, believing him to be possessed by a devil, but a farmer had taken him in, and had sent him to school. "On the first day, there were five fires in the school: one in the center of the ceiling, one in the teacher`s desk, one in her wardrobe, and two on the wall. There is a home on Hedstrom Road that is haunted. The house was built in the early 1970s and current and past residents have experienced ghostly activity. Past renters had multiple experiences. A couple examples: one renter was home alone during the daytime and taking a shower in the main bathroom. He had a radio on the sink counter and the music was loud. He heard the (locked) door open and the radio suddenly go quiet. The door then slammed. He looked out and the radio cord had been pulled from the outlet.

Another renter was asleep on the couch around the same time and at 4 a.m the stereo suddenly turned on full blast. Footsteps have been heard on the roof. Another roommate returned home after a few days to find a strange substance sprayed around part of the bedroom. It appeared to be a dried, white, foamy substance (ectoplasm?). The upstairs portion of the old JC Penny building once held the offices of Edward Osborne, one of Turlock`s earliest promiment citizens. Mr. Osborne was fond of cigars and employees of the old JC Penny would occasionally smell cigar smoke in the old upstairs section, even though nobody in the entire building had been smoking and Mr Osborne was long dead.

UPDATE: Spoke with the building owner who does believe it's haunted, although he hasn't had any personal experiences. His employees have though. One employee says that the freight elevator operates by itself in the middle of the night. Other times the burglar alarm inexplicably sounded in the middle of the night and responding officers heard strange, unfounded noises in the old, unused upstairs portion of the building.
